e’ve been building and making things ever since we stumbled out of Paradise. Some of those things are incredible continuations of God’s creation, while others are nothing but ambitious catastrophes. We continue making, says Russell Rathbun, but we’ve lost ourselves in the process. So how do we find ourselves again—rebuild our connections to each other, the earth, maybe even God? In search of an answer, Rathbun drives cross-country to the Salton Sea and takes a trip to China’s Great Wall, interspersing his traveling revelations with engaging musings on Madame Mao’s Gang of Four, Grandpa Webb’s family secret, the Great Flood and the Tower of Babel, and a host of other subjects that grab his attention. With cheeky wit and sharp insight, Rathbun uncovers a way of finding ourselves and the deep connections we long for in an increasingly complex world.

“The Great Wall of China and the Salton Sea is filled with things I never before had the pleasure of knowing or thinking about. I really like this book!”

— GORDON GANO Violent Femmes

RUSSELL RATHBUN is a writer, speaker, and

“I want to read everything Russell Rathbun has written—he’s funny and honest and attuned to the tragic and to the absurd. His prose has made me laugh out loud, and it has made me cry. I cannot recommend The Great Wall of China and the Salton Sea more highly.”

Holy Spokes

The Search for Urban Spirituality on Two Wheels Laura Everett Invites readers to embrace the spiritual and communal benefits of cycling in the city After Laura Everett’s car died on the highway one rainy night, she started riding her bicycle to work—and began an unlikely conversion to full-time bicycle commuter. In Holy Spokes Everett explains how she became a dedicated cyclist and uses her story to develop a distinctly urban spirituality. Structuring chapters around the component parts of a bicycle, Everett explores the history of cycling, relates her own experiences biking in Boston, and reflects on the spiritual dimensions of moving through the city on two wheels. “As I bike across the cobblestones and potholes of Boston,” Everett says, “I now have daily opportunity to see the life of my city more clearly, love the broken world around me more dearly, and follow this path more nearly. Curiously, I think I am closer to God because of my bicycle.”

Key Selling Points • Presents an explicitly urban spirituality with pertinent spiritual disciplines • Interacts throughout with Brother Lawrence’s Practice of the Presence of God • Includes models for ghost bike dedication and Blessing of the Bicycles services • Holds special appeal for environmentally conscious spiritual seekers Laura Everett is a dedicated urbanist, a minister in the United Church of Christ, and a four-season bicycle commuter in her adopted city of Boston. She serves as the executive director of the Massachusetts Council of Churches.

Love Let Go

Radical Generosity for the Real World Laura Sumner Truax and Amalya Campbell Foreword by Richard Stearns

Displays the amazing power of generosity to transform people and communities When LaSalle Street Church in Chicago received an unexpected windfall, its leaders made the wild, counterintuitive decision to give $160,000 away to church members—$500 each. They were simply told to go out and do good in God’s world. What happened next was amazing. In Love Let Go readers learn how a church community was transformed by the startling truth that money can buy happiness—when you give it away. Laura Sumner Truax and Amalya Campbell tell how this radical generosity experiment worked in their church, explore the connection of human flourishing to generosity, and offer tools to help us reclaim our giver identities and live generously—to love and let go. “Our culture brainwashes us to think that greed is the motivation that drives us, but this book offers a powerful alternative message—the transformative power of generosity. This message could literally change the world, beginning with your life and mine.” — Brian D. McLaren Laura Sumner Truax is senior pastor at LaSalle Street Church in downtown Chicago, a teaching pastor at the University of Chicago, and the author of Undone: When Coming Apart Puts You Back Together. She frequently speaks around the country on the topics of faith, justice, and generosity. Amalya Campbell is a marketing consultant in Wilmette, Illinois, with an MBA from Harvard Business School. She has led stewardship classes at LaSalle Street Church for many years and served on the church’s leadership council during the #LoveLetGo campaign.

The Stories We Live

Finding God’s Calling All around Us Kathleen A. Cahalan Presents the Christian idea of calling in a fresh, vivid way “Christian vocation,” says Kathleen Cahalan, “is about connecting our stories with God’s story.” That is the basis for The Stories We Live, in which Cahalan rejuvenates and transforms vocation from a static concept to a living, dynamic reality. Drawing from biblical narratives, her own experience, and the personal stories of others, Cahalan discusses how each of us is called by God, to follow, as I am, from grief, for service, in suffering, through others, within God. The various callings that we receive throughout life ground our identity in relationship to others and to God. Readers of this book will come away with a renewed vision for what they do and who they are.

Key Selling Points • Develops an exciting new vocabulary of vocation and calling • Addresses issues not commonly explored in relation to vocation, including grief, illness, and unemployment • Includes reflection questions for small group discussion or personal prayer • Free related online content—pertinent video stories and small-group resources Kathleen A. A Brief History of Sunday

From the New Testament to the New Creation Justo L. González Authoritative yet accessible historical overview of Christian Sunday worship Noted Christian historian Justo González here tells the story of how and why Christians have worshiped on Sunday from the earliest days of the church to the present. After discussing the views and practices relating to Sunday in the ancient church, González turns to Constantine and how his policies affected Sunday observances. He then recounts the long process, beginning in the Middle Ages and culminating with Puritanism, whereby Christians came to think of and strictly observe Sunday as the Sabbath. Finally, González looks at the current state of things, exploring especially how the explosive growth of the church in the Majority World has influenced the observance of Sunday worldwide. Readers of this book will rediscover the joy and excitement of Sunday as the early church celebrated it and will find inspiration in an age of increasing indifference and hostility to Christianity. Justo L. González is a retired professor of historical theology and United Methodist minister. His more than one hundred books, published in ten languages, include the acclaimed three-volume History of Christian Thought and The Story Luke Tells.

Library of Religious Biography

The Religious Life of Robert E. Lee R. David Cox

Foreword by Mark A. Noll

The first close examination of how Robert E. Lee’s faith shaped his life Robert E. Lee was many things—accomplished soldier, military engineer, college president, family man, polarizing figure. He was also a person of deep Christian conviction. In this biography of the famous Civil War general, R. David Cox examines Lee’s beliefs and how they guided the key events of his life. Delving into family letters and other primary sources —some of them newly discovered—Cox traces the lifelong development of Lee’s convictions and how they influenced his decisions to stand with Virginia over against the Union and later to support reconciliation and reconstruction in the years after the Civil War. Faith was central to Lee’s character, Cox argues—so central that it directed and redirected his life, especially in the aftermath of defeat. “Nearly every aspect of Robert E. Lee’s life and military career has been carefully examined in scores of books. We know that his character and actions were shaped in considerable part by his religious beliefs, but until now we have not had a systematic analysis of those beliefs. This book adds an important dimension to our understanding of Lee and his world.” — James M. McPherson R. David Cox is an Episcopal priest and author who was rector at the R. E. Lee Memorial Episcopal Church in Lexington, Virginia, for thirteen years. He currently serves as visiting professor of history at Southern Virginia University in Buena Vista, Virginia.

To Begin at the Beginning An Introduction to Christian Faith THIRD EDITION

Martin B. Copenhaver A masterful, inviting telling of the Christian story Christian faith, says Martin Copenhaver, is not a subject to be mastered like calculus or Shakespeare—it is a story to be told and a life to be lived. No matter how much or how little you know, To Begin at the Beginning tells the story of Christian faith and invites you to take part in it. In this book Copenhaver covers basic themes—the Bible, church, ministry, sacraments, prayer, ethics—in a clear and inviting way. His approach creates a valuable resource for pastors, an accessible guide for seekers and new Christians, and a “refresher course” for longtime Christians who want to engage anew with what they believe.

Praise for earlier editions “Martin Copenhaver has a great gift for talking about deep and difficult matters in a unique, enjoyable way. His book is a wonderful introduction to the Christian faith or an invigorating way to renew faith.” — William H. Willimon “Copenhaver has done a bold thing well. Working patiently with the formidable bulk of Christian faith and thought, he has untangled its denser matters and smoothed them out.” — Barbara Brown Taylor Martin B. Copenhaver is president of Andover Newton Theological School and a United Church of Christ minister. His other books include Room to Grow: Meditations on Trying to Live as a Christian and This Odd and Wondrous Calling: The Public and Private Lives of Two Ministers (with Lillian Daniel).

Servant of All

Status, Ambition, and the Way of Jesus Craig C. Hill Foreword by William H. Willimon

Biblical encouragement for pastors and Christian leaders who struggle with ambition There exists a deep tension between the biblical view of servant leaders and the status that Christian leaders today often desire and pursue. Many pastors and other church leaders, like it or not, struggle with ambition. In this book Craig Hill shows how the New Testament can help Christian leaders deal with this problem honestly and faithfully. Hill examines such passages as the Christ Hymn in Philippians 2 to show how New Testament authors helped early Christians construct their identity in ways that overturned conventional status structures and hierarchies. Status and ambition, Hill says, are not often addressed forthrightly in the church, as Christians either secretly indulge those impulses or feebly try to quash them. Hill’s Servant of All will help Christian leaders reconcile their human aspirations and their spirituality, empowering them to minister with integrity. “In the midst of our culture’s wistful and slightly desperate clamoring for programs to create ‘strong leadership,’ Craig Hill’s Servant of All speaks a much-needed, biblically grounded word, calling us to recognize ‘the way of Jesus’ as the true model for leadership in the church.” — Richard B. Hays “Craig Hill invites readers—let’s make that leaders—to an honest discussion about the problem of unchecked ambition and status-seeking in the church. . . . Thoroughly built on scholarly research, this book is readable and edifying for a lay audience as well as clergy and theologians.” — Elaine Heath

Keeping Faith in Fundraising Peter Harris and Rod Wilson

Fundraising is a key element of the Christian life—churches, schools, and many other organizations rely on it to function. But it is a risky enterprise, fraught with questions and challenges. How can Christians raise funds with integrity? In this book Peter Harris and Rod Wilson, experienced fundraisers themselves, bring fundraising within the scope of normal Christian life and work. After first laying a biblical foundation by discussing 2 Corinthians 8–9, Harris and Wilson develop seven themes central to the giving and receiving of money and offer valuable insights based on their many years of fundraising as Christians. “Keeping Faith in Fundraising is both accurate in its emphasis and motivational in its focus. It draws our attention to the centrality of our common mission as brothers and sisters to both give and receive money in a way that reflects Jesus.” — Eugene Peterson Peter Harris is founder and president of A Rocha, an international Christian conservation organization. Rod Wilson served as president and professor of psychology and counseling at Regent College, Vancouver, from 2000 to 2015.

The Courage to Be Protestant Reformation Faith in Today’s World SECOND EDITION

David F. Wells At its heart, the Protestant Reformation was about a deep, doctrinally shaped faith centered on God and his Word. But that historic, substantive faith is not faring so well in our contemporary Western context. In his 2008 book The Courage to Be Protestant, David Wells issued a summons to return to the historic faith, defined by the Reformation solas (grace, faith, and Scripture alone) and by a high regard for doctrine. In this thoroughly reworked second edition, Wells presents an updated look at the state of evangelicalism and the changes that have taken place in the last decade. On the cusp of the Protestant Reformation’s 500th anniversary, there is no better time to hear Wells’s clarion call to reclaim the historic, doctrinally serious Reformation faith in our fast-paced, technologically dominated, postmodern culture. David F. Wells is distinguished senior research professor at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary and an ordained Congregationalist minister. His many previous books include Above All Earthly Pow’rs, God in the Wasteland, Losing Our Virtue, and No Place for Truth.

Just Immigration

American Policy in Christian Perspective Mark R. Amstutz Few issues are as complex and controversial as immigration in the United States. The only thing anyone seems to agree on is that the system is broken. In this book Mark Amstutz offers a succinct overview and assessment of current immigration policy and argues for an approach to the complex immigration debate that is solidly grounded in Christian political thought. After analyzing key laws and institutions in the US immigration system, Amstutz examines how Catholics, evangelicals, and mainline Protestants have used Scripture to address social and political issues, including immigration. He critiques the ways in which many Christians have approached immigration reform and offers concrete suggestions on how Christian groups can offer a more credible political engagement with this urgent policy issue.

Key Selling Points • Strong faith-based approach to the urgent issue of immigration • Ideal introductory text for students and church leaders Mark R. Amstutz is professor of political science at Wheaton College. Prophetic Christianity

Always with Us?

What Jesus Really Said about the Poor Liz Theoharis Foreword by William J. Barber II

Jesus’s words “the poor you will always have with you” (Matthew 26:11) are regularly used to suggest that ending poverty is impossible, that poverty is a result of moral failures, and that the poor themselves have no role in changing their situation. In this book Liz Theoharis examines both the biblical text and the lived reality of the poor to show how that passage is taken out of context, distorted, and politicized to justify theories about the inevitability of inequality. Theoharis reinterprets “the poor you will always always have with you” to show that it is actually one of the strongest biblical mandates to end poverty. She documents stories of poor people organizing to improve their lot and illuminates the implications for the church. Poverty is not inevitable, Theoharis argues. It is a systemic sin, and all Christians have a responsibility to partner with the poor to end poverty once and for all. Liz Theoharis is founder and codirector of the Kairos Center for Religions, Rights, and Social Justice and coordinator of the Poverty Initiative at Union Theological Seminary. Jesus and the Holocaust Reflections on Suffering and Hope Joel Marcus Foreword by Ellen T. Charry

On Good Friday, April 14, 1995, Christians remembered the crucifixion of Jesus, Jews reenacted the Passover, and the world at large observed the fiftieth anniversary of the end of World War II and the Holocaust. That unusual juxtaposition formed the backdrop as Joel Marcus—a Jew by birth, a Christian by choice— took the pulpit at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Glasgow, Scotland. This book presents Marcus’s stirring meditations that day on the relationship between the deaths of six million innocent Jews in the Holocaust and the death of one innocent Jew on the cross. Through reflection on Bible passages in light of stories and poems about the Holocaust, Marcus shows how the hope that Christians have always found hidden in the darkest hour of their liturgical year can shed light on the most tragic moment of our recent history—and vice versa. Joel Marcus is professor of New Testament and Christian Origins at Duke Divinity School and author of the two-volume Anchor Bible Commentary volume on Mark.

Evolution and the Fall William T. Cavanaugh and James K. A. Smith, editors Foreword by Michael Gulker

Tackles thorny questions and tensions at the intersection of Scripture and science What does it mean for the Christian doctrine of the Fall if there was no historical Adam? If humanity emerged from nonhuman primates—as genetic, biological, and archaeological evidence seems to suggest—then what are the implications for a Christian understanding of human origins, including the origin of sin? This book gathers a multidisciplinary, ecumenical team of scholars to address those difficult questions from the perspectives of biology, theology, history, Scripture, philosophy, and politics. After mapping the territory of challenging questions surrounding human origins and the Fall, the contributors delve into biblical sources and traditional theological accounts, consider broader cultural implications of the fall, and propose ways of reimagining the conversation so as to move forward faithfully.

Doubt, Faith, and Certainty Anthony C. Thiselton

In this book celebrated theologian Anthony Thiselton provides clarity on three complicated and long-misunderstood theological concepts that raise urgent practical, pastoral problems for Christians: doubt, faith, and certainty. According to Thiselton, doubt is not always bad, faith can have different meanings in different circumstances, and certainty is fragile. Drawing on his expertise in the fields of exegesis and hermeneutics, biblical studies, and the history of Christian thought, Thiselton works his way through the labyrinth of past definitions while offering better, more nuanced theological understandings of doubt, faith, and certainty. The result is a book that speaks profoundly to existential concerns. Anthony C. Thiselton is professor emeritus of Christian theology at the University of Nottingham, England. Beautiful Light

Religious Meaning in Film Roy M. Anker “Religious” films don’t tend to get much respect in Hollywood, but that doesn’t mean that religion doesn’t regularly find its way into the movies. In Beautiful Light, Roy Anker seeks out the often-unnoticed connections between film and religion and shows how even films that aren’t overtly religious or Christian in their content can be filled with deep religious insights and spiritual meaning. Closely examining nine critically acclaimed films including Magnolia, The Apostle, American Gigolo, and M. Night Shyamalan’s Wide Awake, Anker analyzes the ways in which these movies explore what it means to be human—and what it means, as human beings, to wrestle with an often unwieldy divine presence. Addressing questions of doubt and belief, despair and elation, hatred and love, Anker’s work sheds “beautiful light” on some of Hollywood’s most profound and memorable films. Roy M. Anker taught film and literature for many years at Calvin College, Grand Rapids, Michigan. His other books include Catching Light: Looking for God in the Movies and Of Pilgrims and Fire: When God Shows Up at the Movies.

How the New Testament Helps Us Understand the Old Testament John Goldingay For Jesus and his contemporaries, what we now know as the Old Testament was simply the Scriptures—and it was the fundamental basis of how people understood their lives with God. In Reading Jesus’s Bible John Goldingay uncovers five ways in which the New Testament uses the Old Testament. In doing so, he provides a new way for readers today to approach the Old Testament. Along with a systematic overview of how Jesus and the first Christian writers used the Old Testament, illustrated with passages from Matthew, Romans, 1 Corinthians, and Hebrews, Goldingay offers a straightforward introduction to the Old Testament in its own right. Reading Jesus’s Bible will shed fresh Old Testament light on Jesus, God, and the church today. John Goldingay is David Allan Hubbard Professor of Old Testament at Fuller Theological Seminary and priest-in-charge of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church in Pasadena, California. His many other books include Do We Need the New Testament? Letting the Old Testament Speak for Itself and Old Testament Theology: Israel’s Gospel.

An Introduction to Biblical Law William S. Morrow

In this book William Morrow surveys four major law collections in Exodus– Deuteronomy and shows how they each enabled the people of Israel to create and sustain a community of faith. Treating biblical law as a dynamic system of thought representing Israel’s efforts at self-definition, Morrow describes four different social contexts that gave rise to biblical law: (1) Israel at the holy mountain (the Ten Commandments); (2) Israel in the village assembly (Exodus 20:22–23:19); (3) Israel in the courts of the Lord (priestly and holiness rules in Exodus, Leviticus and Numbers); and (4) Israel in the city (Deuteronomy). Including forthright discussion of such controversial subjects as slavery, revenge, gender inequality, religious intolerance, and contradictions between bodies of biblical law, Morrow’s study will help students and other serious readers make sense out of texts in the Pentateuch that are often seen as obscure. William S. Morrow is professor of Hebrew and Hebrew Scriptures at Queen’s University, Kingston, Ontario. His previous books include Protest against God: The Eclipse of a Biblical Tradition.

Born from Lament

The Theology and Politics of Hope in Africa Emmanuel Katongole There is no more urgent theological task than to provide an account of hope in Africa, given its endless cycles of violence, war, poverty, and displacement. So claims Emmanuel Katongole, an innovative theological voice from Africa. In the midst of suffering, Katongole says, hope takes the form of “arguing” and “wrestling” with God. Such lament is not merely a cry of pain—it is a way of mourning, protesting, and appealing to God. As he unpacks the rich theological and social dimensions of the practice of lament in Africa, Katongole tells the stories of courageous Christian activists working for change in East Africa and invites readers to enter into lament along with them. Emmanuel Katongole is associate professor of theology and peace studies at the University of Notre Dame, Indiana, and a Catholic priest of the Archdiocese of Kampala, Uganda. His other books include The Sacrifice of Africa: A Political Theology for Africa and Mirror to the Church: Resurrecting Faith after Genocide in Rwanda.

Jesus and the Eyewitnesses The Gospels as Eyewitness Testimony SECOND EDITION

Richard Bauckham Winner of the 2007 Christianity Today Book Award in Biblical Studies, this momentous volume argues that the four Gospels are closely based on the eyewitness testimony of those who personally knew Jesus. Noted New Testament scholar Richard Bauckham challenges the prevailing assumption that the Jesus accounts circulated as “anonymous community traditions,” asserting instead that they were transmitted in the names of the original eyewitnesses. In this expanded second edition Bauckham has added a new preface, three substantial new chapters that respond to critics and clarify key points of his argument, and a comprehensive new bibliography. Richard Bauckham is professor emeritus of New Testament studies at the University of St. Andrews, Scotland, senior scholar at Ridley Hall, Cambridge, and a fellow of both the British Academy and the Royal Society of Edinburgh. His many other books include Jesus and the God of Israel, Gospel Women, and Jesus: A Very Short Introduction.

Turning Points in the History of American Evangelicalism

Heath W. Carter and Laura Rominger Porter, editors Foreword by Nathan O. Hatch / Afterword by Martin E. Marty

The history of American evangelicalism is perhaps best understood by examining its turning points—those moments when it took on a new scope, challenge, or influence. The Great Awakening, the rise of fundamentalism and Pentecostalism, the emergence of Billy Graham—all these developments and many more have given shape to one of the most dynamic movements in American religious history. Each chapter in this book has been written by one of the world’s top experts in American religious history, and together they form a single narrative of evangelicalism’s remarkable development. Here is an engaging, balanced, coherent history of American evangelicalism from its origins as a small movement to its status as a central player in the American religious story. Heath W. Carter is assistant professor of history at Valparaiso University and the author of Union Made: Working People and the Rise of Social Christianity in Chicago. Laura Rominger Porter holds a PhD in history from the University of Notre Dame and is an independent scholar based in Des Moines, Iowa. Pentecostalism as a Christian Mystical Tradition Daniel Castelo

Foreword by Elaine Heath

Pentecostalism, says Daniel Castelo, is commonly framed as “evangelicalism with tongues” or dismissed as simply a revivalist movement. In this book Castelo argues that Pentecostalism is actually best understood as a Christian mystical tradition. Taking a theological approach to Pentecostalism, Castelo looks particularly at the movement’s methodology and epistemology as he carefully distinguishes it from American evangelicalism. Castelo displays the continuity between Pentecostalism and ancient church tradition, creating a unified narrative of Pentecostalism and the mystical tradition of Christianity throughout history and today. Finally, he uses a test case to press the question of what the interactions between mystical theology and dogmatics could look like. Daniel Castelo is professor of dogmatic and constructive theology at Seattle Pacific University and Seminary. He is also the author of Pneumatology: A Guide for the Perplexed and (with Bo H. Lim) the Two Horizons Old Testament Commentary volume on Hosea.

Wittenberg Meets the World

Reimagining the Reformation at the Margins Alberto L. García and John A. Nunes Foreword by Martin E. Marty

As the global church assesses the history of the Lutheran Reformation, Alberto García and John Nunes in this book reimagine central Reformational themes from black, Hispanic, and other perspectives traditionally at the margins of catholic-evangelical communities. Focusing on the central theme of justification, García and Nunes delve into three interlinked aspects of the church’s life in the world—martyria (witness), diakonia (service), and koinōnia (fellowship). They argue that it is critically important and vitally enriching for the whole church, especially Eurocentric Protestant churches, to learn from the grassroots theological emphases of Christian communities in the emerging world. Alberto L. García is professor emeritus of theology at Concordia University Wisconsin, an ordained Lutheran pastor, and coeditor of Critical Issues in Ecclesiology. John A. Nunes is president of Concordia College New York, an ordained Lutheran pastor, and the author of Voices from the City: Issues and Images of Urban Preaching.

The Whole Church Sings

Congregational Singing in Luther’s Wittenberg Robin A. Leaver Many scholars think that congregational singing was not established in Lutheran worship until well after the start of the Reformation. In this book Robin Leaver calls that view into question, presenting new research to confirm the earlier view that congregational singing was both the intention and the practice right from the beginning of the Wittenberg reforms in worship. Leaver’s study focuses on the Wittenberg hymnal of 1526, which until now has received little scholarly attention. This hymnal, Leaver argues, shows how the Lutheran Reformation was to a large degree defined, expressed, promoted, and taken to heart through early Lutheran hymns. Examining what has been forgotten or neglected about the origins of congregational hymnody under Martin Luther’s leadership, this study of worship, music, and liturgy is a significant contribution to Reformation scholarship. Robin A. Leaver is professor emeritus at Westminster Choir College and visiting professor at Yale University and Queen’s University, Belfast, Northern Ireland. His previous books include Luther’s Liturgical Music: Principles and Implications. Church History April • 978-0-8028-7375-0 6" × 9" paperback 184 pages • $22.00 [£15.99]

The Myth of Rebellious Angels

Studies in Second Temple Judaism and New Testament Texts Loren T. Stuckenbruck The mythical story of fallen angels preserved in 1 Enoch and related literature was profoundly influential during the Second Temple period. In this volume renowned scholar Loren Stuckenbruck explores aspects of that influence and demonstrates how the myth was reused and adapted to address new religious and cultural contexts. Stuckenbruck considers a variety of themes, including demonology, giants, exorcism, petitionary prayer, the birth and activity of Jesus, the Holy Spirit, the conversion of Gentiles, “apocalyptic” and the understanding of time, and more. He also offers a theological framework for the myth of fallen angels through which to reconsider several New Testament texts—the Synoptic Gospels, the Gospel of John, Acts, Paul’s letters, and the book of Revelation. Loren T. Stuckenbruck is professor of New Testament and Second Temple Judaism at the University of Munich. His previous books include 1 Enoch 91–108 and The Fall of the Angels.

Visual Arts in the Worshiping Church Lisa J. DeBoer

Foreword by Nicholas Wolterstorff

Although numerous studies have examined biblical and theological rationales for using the visual arts in worship, this book by Lisa J. DeBoer fills in a piece of the picture missing so far—the social dimensions of both our churches and the various art worlds represented in our congregations. DeBoer looks at Orthodoxy, Catholicism, and Protestantism in turn—including case studies of specific congregations—showing how each tradition’s use of the visual arts reveals an underlying ecclesiology. “Lisa DeBoer’s wise and insightful volume is an indispensable resource for anyone who believes that art can enrich the worship and deepen the faith of individuals and congregations alike.” — Robin M. Entering into Rest Ethics as Theology Volume 3

Oliver O’Donovan Oliver O’Donovan’s Ethics as Theology project began with Self, World, and Time, an “induction” into Christian ethics as ordered reflection on moral thinking within the life of faith. Volume 2, Finding and Seeking, shifted the focus to the movement of moral thought from a first consciousness of agency to the time that determines the moment of decision. In this third and final volume of his magnum opus, O’Donovan turns his attention to the forward horizon with which moral thinking must engage. Moral experience, he argues, is necessarily two-directional, looking both back at responsibility and forward at aims. Entering into Rest offers O’Donovan’s mature reflections on questions that have engaged him throughout his career and provides a synoptic view of many of his main themes. Oliver O’Donovan is a fellow of the British Academy and professor emeritus of Christian ethics and practical theology at the University of Edinburgh. His other books include The Desire of the Nations, The Ways of Judgment, and Resurrection and Moral Order. Ethics May • 978-0-8028-7359-0 6" × 9" paperback 272 pages • $32.00 [£22.99]

The Peril and Promise of Christian Liberty

Richard Hooker, the Puritans, and Protestant Political Theology W. Bradford Littlejohn How do Christians determine when to obey God even if that means disobeying other people? In this book W. Bradford Littlejohn addresses that question as he unpacks the magisterial political-theological work of Richard Hooker, a leading figure in the sixteenth-century English Reformation. Littlejohn shows how Martin Luther and other Reformers considered Christian liberty to be compatible with considerable civil authority over the church, but he also analyzes the ambiguities and tensions of that relationship and how it helped provoke the Puritan movement. The heart of the book examines how, according to Richard Hooker, certain forms of Puritan legalism posed a much greater threat to Christian liberty than did meddling monarchs. In expounding Hooker’s remarkable attempt to offer a balanced synthesis of liberty and authority in church, state, and conscience, Littlejohn draws out pertinent implications for Christian liberty and politics today. W. Bradford Littlejohn serves as director of the Davenant Trust, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the renewal of Christian wisdom for the contemporary church.
