CAREER IN MARINE DIESEL ENGINE MECHANICS
Marine technology is the application of science and engineering knowledge, tools and techniques to the understanding and use of Marine Environment. A Marine Diesel engine Mechanic works to repair service and adjust different components of Diesel Engines that are designed to function in fresh or salt water environments. Marine Mechanics are responsible for performing repair work on Marine Engines using hand and power tools along with technical manuals. A career as a Marine Engine Mechanic can develop a concentrated understanding of Marine and watercraf systems. This includes gasoline and Diesel Engines, Fuel Management systems, Engine Electrical Systems, Marine Direct Current Electrical Systems, Steering and Hydraulic Systems, Drives, and Propulsion Systems. ENGINE TRAINING Introductory Marine Diesel Engine training covers the fundamental principles and operational needs of marine diesel engines: Routine Maintenance Tasks, Commissioning and Decommissioning, Fuel and Lubrication System Service, Cooling System Maintenance and Service, Troubleshooting and Preliminary Diagnostics. The training covers primarily focusing on the Marine Diesel Engines found onboard boats and yachts. However, the skills learned can be applied to other Diesel Engine uses and industries like Diesel Engines are everywhere — ships and powerboats, most heavy transportation trucks, commercial / industrial strength generators, some personal vehicles, farming equipment, etc. The main knowledge about marine diesel engine includes: 2&4 Stroke Engine, Internal & External Combustion Engine, Pumps & Valves, Pistons, Cooling Systems, Lubrication Systems, Description about Ship, Hand Tools, Measuring Instrument, Engineering Drawing, Piping, Basic Welding etc. JOB DUTIES An individual seeking a job as a Marine Mechanic must possess the skills to service and repair 2- and 4-stroke engines. Further job duties include Troubleshooting, Repairing, Installing and Maintaining Steering and Propulsion Systems, Inboard and outboard Motors, Diesel Engines, Fuel Systems and Marine Plumbing. Diesel Mechanics & Diesel Technicians should be prepared to perform preventative Maintenance, inspections and Safety checks, as well as diagnose and repair problems with Diesel Engines. Diesel Mechanics should be able to estimate time and material cost of repairs or jobs. EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATION 10th or above, ITI in any trade, Diploma/Degree in any discipline will be an added advantage DURATION OF THE PROGRAME One year course for Marine Engine Mechanics AFFILIATION All Courses are Approved by Planning Commission, Govt.of India.
