Canada and Estonia are northern countries and share similar values. Northern Spirit is the result of an artistic vision showcasing the best of Estonian fashion and design for the first time in Canada. It celebrates Canada’s 150th and the Republic of Estonia’s 100th birthdays. This joint effort develops bonds between creative and talented designers in Estonia with Canadians who share their interests, creating sustainable cultural ties between Canada and Estonia. The Northern Spirit project includes a show at the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM), a popup showroom, a fundraising event, meetings with fashion industry wholesalers, buyers as well as the media. Northern Spirit is truly a unique Estonian fashion and design experience.

Northern Spirit is made possible by EERO (Estonian Ecumenical Relief Organization) with the cooperation of ESC/VEMU (Estonian Studies Centre/Museum of Estonians Abroad) and the EFBA (Estonian Fashion Brands Association). EERO is a registered Canadian charity supporting health, education and community programs in Estonia. ESC/VEMU is a registered Canadian charity that promotes the advancement of Canadian-Estonian cultural heritage and cultural contacts between Canada and Estonia. EFBA is a non-profit organization representing well-established Estonian designers and internationally recognized fashion brands.

About Ivo Nikkolo and the collection: ivonikkolo.andmorefashion.com Wholesale and franchise information: baltikagroup.com/wholesale

Ivo Nikkolo’s design brand delivers Northern European aesthetics and architecturally inspired shapes with disruptive detailing. The architectural aesthetic allows rebellion, organized disruption of forms and layers, giving the designer freedom to create something genuinely sculptural. The aim of the design is to create a balanced sharp look with clean cuts celebrating the essence of power in a feminine style. Ivo Nikkolo Head Designer Britta Laumets: “It’s not only about where fashion trends are heading, but also about changes in society and interpreting these changes into fashion design. Fashion evolves with new ways of thinking, making the collection exciting and fresh.”

d’difference More than a decade ago, a group of biochemists and scientists led by Ruth Oltjer, M.D., who specialized in internal medicine, began to search for skincare products that respect skin’s natural defence system and are based on natural ingredients. At first, creams for hospital use were developed, and after excellent results were achieved on damaged skin, a full line of products for all skin types was born. It is a sophisticated, different kind of skincare, based on a scientific medical approach and in touch with nature. We use the best and most innovative natural ingredients, in low molecular weights when possible, to ensure deeper penetration and visible results. Ruth Oltjer, Founder of D`DIFFERENCE “As a doctor and as a woman, I have a strong desire to help others. Skincare, although considered a part of the beauty world, does so much more than make us groomed and confident. With the right product and right use, there is the possibility to change the way our skin behaves and looks.”

Promoter of Estonian Design How can a national design distinguish itself in today’s globalised society, and what kind of impression does Estonian design leave with bystanders? Is it an exemplary Baltic phenomenon or more like the little brother of the Scandinavian countries? Estonian cultural identity is largely based on the sense of being part of the Finno-Ugric peoples, who are scattered from the Urals to Hungary. One of the crucial factors in preserving a unified cultural identity has been the Estonian language. Estonian designers value acquiring international experience through connections with the outside world. The Estonian Association of Designers (EAD) brings together over 150 designers from fields like products, textiles, fashion and graphic design. It promotes Estonian talents in its home country as well as abroad; it initiated the development of a national design policy. EAD regularly organizes educational seminars, workshops, competitions and presents the BRUNO product design award (part of the Estonian Design Awards). EAD participates in the work of larger design organizations and has been a member of the board of various organizations (WDO, BEDA, EIDD Design For All Europe). It collaborates in projects focused on issues like inclusive design, health care design, human cities, design management and also initiated the Tallinn For All project, which received the DME award. The main annual design event for the past 12 years has been the international Tallinn Design Night Festival (DISAINIÖÖ) organized by EAD and Disainiöö MTÜ (www.tallinndesignfestival.com). The festival has been awarded the European Quality label EFFE. In order to make Estonian design more visible, EAD established the Estonian Design House in 2010, housing the Estonian design shop and representing 100 designers and their studios. www.estoniandesignhouse.com In 2014 EAD created a concept of a travelling exhibition called Size Doesn’t Matter which contrasts the smallness of the land, the density of its designers and the abundance of its achievements. The aim of the movement is to introduce Estonian design abroad and present a cross-section of the contemporary design world in Estonia. The exhibition Size Doesn’t Matter, presenting 50 Estonian designers, has been exhibited in Brussels, Vienna, London, Stockholm, Caen and London. The exhibit has won an award from the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2017. Anyone can be Estonian at the Estonian Studies Centre/VEMU! Located in downtown Toronto at Tartu College, the Estonian Studies Centre aims to preserve and introduce Estonian history and culture to all those interested. The Museum of Estonians Abroad (VEMU) is one of the ESC programs and works to connect Canadian and Estonian communities through rich and vibrant cultural programming including concerts, lectures, seminars, workshops, exhibitions, films screenings, theatre, and more in both Estonian and English. VEMU also acts as a cultural bridge between Canada and Estonia by participating in a variety of cultural and research projects. The VEMU archival, library, and museum collections are the biggest Estonian collections outside of Estonia. VEMU has been a member of the group of cultural institutions along one of Toronto’s main streets, the Bloor St. Culture Corridor, since 2014.

Most of us, living in a foreign country for one reason or another, want to preserve our nationality. In order to do so, we have to create our own cultural environment to suit our needs. Libraries, archives, and museums are part of this environment. VEMU is becoming a museum in the best and most modern sense: a memory and culture institute that collects, organizes, researches, and mediates. Far from home, VEMU inevitably fills the role of a cultural representative for Estonia. The best way to use compatriots living in a foreign country is in the interests of Estonia. VEMU has its own resources and opportunities to do this. Piret Noorhani in an interview with Kaarel Tarand, Sirp, 22.06.2012
