Important Definitions University life brings with it a new vocabulary, which can be confusing. Below you will find some of the more common academic terms and what they mean. Academic year The academic year at Effat University is divided into two semesters. Each semester consists of 15 weeks, excluding the registration and examination periods. Academic status A student’s academic status will be determined at the end of each semester and will appear on the transcript that shows achievements throughout graduate study. However, the summer session has no effect on academic status.

Good standing A student’s academic status is maintained when the student’s cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) and semester GPA are at least ‘B’ or above. Academic probation A student is placed under ‘Academic Probation’ status after the final grades have been processed at the end of each semester (except the summer semester), and her cumulative GPA is less than a ‘B’. Academic dismissal A student is dismissed if her cumulative GPA is below ‘B’ for two consecutive semesters.
