Fifty years celebrations are heartening It has certainly been heartening to see the 4,000 people who work or do business daily at the Brisbane Markets join the celebrations as our community marked 50 years at the Rocklea site. Most heartening are the many former Brisbane Markets Wholesalers and workers who returned to be part of our celebrations to wish us well. Their contribution of laying the foundations for us to build upon is invaluable. Their

markets Trading floor roofing project underway Work has begun on a $6.3 million Brisbane Produce Market trading floor roofing project that will cover the open area between Buildings B and C and the Covered Unloading Area. Construction began in early September after two years of planning and consultation with Brisbane Markets tenants. Final works are expected to be completed by early 2015 and will include refurbishment of the Buildings B and C facades and an associated upgrade of fire services.

Column molds go in, ready for concrete to be poured to create the piers that will hold up the roof.

Fun facts about the project There will be about 1.5km of piers supporting the structure. The structural steel frame includes: • 8 main girder trusses some over 24m long • 110 secondary trusses • 872 individual struts • Total length of steelwork – 19,500m (laid end to end it would run from the Brisbane Markets to the city and back) • Total number of structural steel members – 3,106

• Total number of purlins – 988 • Total roof area – 7,925m2 (approx.) this is greater than the area of Lang Park • Total volume under the roof sheeting – 74,500m3 (equivalent to 30 Olympic swimming pools). There is almost 16m3 of concrete per column location but must be poured in four separate intervals, each requiring setup and demobilisation.

G20 Summit preparations on track Brisbane is the host city for the G20 Leaders’ Summit in 2014, being held 15-16 November at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre, South Bank. While the summit will attract up to 4,000 delegates and up to 3,000 domestic and international media representatives, it also has implications for Brisbane Markets tenants who will be negotiating tougher security and traffic disruptions in their quest to feed fresh produce to the visitors. Brisbane Markets Limited (BML) is working closely with the G20 Taskforce and has held a series of workshop to prepare tenants for the disruptions so they can maintain supplies of fresh produce to businesses in the Brisbane CBD and South Bank precinct. The influx of world leaders also means tighter security across South East Queensland, including the Brisbane Markets site, with BML keeping a tighter eye on those with permission to enter the site.

Brisbane Markets tenants attend a workshop to prepare them for the disruptions ahead with the staging of the G20 Summit in Brisbane in November.

Queensland’s biggest distribution hub for fresh produce celebrated 50 years of moving to the Brisbane Markets site on 26 August, with a cake cutting ceremony and barbecue for its 4,000 community members. Fifty years before, Queensland Premier, The Hon Frank Nicklin, officially opened the facility calling it the most modern Markets in Australia at that time. Queensland Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, The Hon Dr John McVeigh and Brisbane Markets Limited Chairman Tony Joseph were onsite to hear stories from that day during a cake cutting ceremony while trading continued on the Brisbane Produce Market floor.

A substantial percentage of the fresh fruit and vegetables eaten in this State have transited through the site. Thousands of Queenslanders have had a connection with the Brisbane Markets over the years as visitors, former workers, growers, buyers or suppliers.

The Markets Pre-1964 Pre 1964, Brisbane Markets was a congested, sprawled out tangle of businesses that spread from Roma Street, down to Turbot Street, smack bang in the heart of Brisbane city. It traded for almost 100 years this way but it needed to grow. In 1958, a Market Investigation Committee looked at a range of options and decided on a dairy farm in Rocklea, the land where the site is today. It was a Queensland government owned facility, opened by the Premier Frank Nicklin on 26 August 1964. The Brisbane Markets became industry owned after a fierce bidding war in 2002 and is owned and operated by Brisbane Markets Limited.

Plenty of media flashbacks Brisbane media outlets have kept busy throughout August and September writing articles and producing pieces of film on the Brisbane Markets’ 50 years at Rocklea. Channel 7 produced a two minute Flashback for its news, using film footage from the years and interviewing some of the Brisbane Markets’ longest serving workers. The piece of film is found on the iPads located in the Arch Martin Brisbane Markets History Room. The ABC Landline program followed suit with a seven minute piece on the importance of Queensland’s biggest fresh produce distribution hub and how it has developed over the years.

ABC’s Landline team films on the Brisbane Produce Market trading floor in the lead up to the anniversary celebrations.

Local and industry newspapers, a Radio 4BC outside broadcast and a 32 page feature in Good Fruit and Vegetables have all wanted to be part of the anniversary.

Industry news bites Top marks from Fresh Produce survey

Rocklea provedore merges with Moraitis family

A survey taken at the Sydney based Fresh Produce Safety Conference in August shows the newly formed organisation is relevant and providing the horticulture industry with information it needs for the safe handling of fresh produce.

Brisbane Markets’ Oz Grown Wholesalers has merged with the national MorCo Fresh business.

Recipient feedback showed 94% of the 67 respondents either agreed or strongly agreed that the conference was relevant to their work, while 97% agreed or strongly agreed that the conference presentations were relevant or useful.

Oz Grown Wholesalers is owned and operated by trained chef Anthony Galis, who began his fledgling secondary wholesaling business in 2006 and grew it to an operation with 30 staff and 10 trucks, operating from the Brisbane Markets. MorCo Fresh is operated by Sydney’s Moraitis family – one of the most well-known and successful families in fruit and vegetable wholesaling in Australia, operated by Paul and Stephen Moraitis.

Brismark General Manager Gail Woods and Freshmark’s Bruce Hecker attended the conference to educate conference goers on the importance of Market-run chemical and biological testing service, FreshTest.

Anthony becomes the Managing Director of MorCo Fresh’s Queensland operations.

Former Oz Grown Wholesalers owner Anthony Galis has merged his business with the Moraitis family’s MorCo Fresh.

Networking and information sharing was highlighted as one of the main benefits of the conference, with 90% indicating they had met useful contacts at the conference.

Thoughts on food irradiation

The Fresh Produce Safety Centre was established this year is funded by Horticulture Australia Limited using voluntary contributions from industry and matched funds from the Australian Government.

The Queensland Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFFQ) will soon know what the industry thinks about its application for permission to use irradiation to kill or sterilise fruit flies and other pests. DAFFQ made an application to the Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ), which has now asked the community its thoughts on irridating a number of fruits and vegetables.

From the cool banana at Motorama, to the bananas at the Brisbane Markets – congratulations on 50 years at Rocklea!

Public submissions closed on 9 October 2014. Food irradiation is used in more than 50 countries to destroy bacteria and pests, reducing the need for pesticides, and to extend the shelf life of food. It has been used to treat food since the late 1950s.

Spring weather predictions The weather bureau’s long-term forecast is predicting a drier than normal October to December for much of eastern Australia and north-west Western Australia. Tasmania will be the exception, with a good chance of above average rainfall. The Australian Weather Bureau said the forecast warmer temperatures until the end of the year mean 2014 is likely to rank as one of Australia’s top 10 hottest years on record.

A new look Retailer Program

Brisbane Produce Market has introduced a ‘new look’ Retailer Program. The change is the result of months of market research, engaging with independent greengrocers, and using their feedback to look at things differently. The Program is designed to increase the customer base of retailers, increase awareness of the ‘Shop at your local Greengrocer’ brand, and provide business services support to help retailers with their daily business needs. The Retailer Program has two-levels: 1. A Silver entry level, and 2. The all-inclusive and comprehensive Gold Membership which includes marketing campaigns, social media, radio advertising, a dedicated ‘Shop at your local Greengrocer’ website, an interactive online marketing tool, as well as cross-promotional activities with Kids Go Fresh & Healthy education program. Retailers who are participating at the Gold level will also receive weekly updates from the Business Services team to keep them informed about wage information and retail awards, as well as access to recruitment services, training, free Work Place Health and Safety audits and manuals, and Human Resource/Industrial Relations advice.

To find out more about the revamped Retailer Program contact Brismark marketing on 07 3915 4222 or email marketing@brismark.com.au.
