Did you know that every time you walk in rhythm, sway your hips, click your fingers, wriggle your toes or spin around you are doing dance moves. There should be more of it! Dance involves healthy exercise that can be lots of fun. If you danced for ten minutes every day you would exercise your brain and body, use your imagination, keep fit and share time with friends.

This book is designed to give you some ideas and interesting activities that will assist you discover more about dance and show you ways you can invent dance moves that can be done by yourself or with your friends.

Make a Group Dance

You will need: • thinking cap, energy, ideas, space and some friends to design the dance

Sharing the dance:

Options:

• practice the dance till you are happy with your efforts

• vary the number of people in the dance, use of music, or props

Getting Ready: • think about what types of movements you wish to invent • try out a number of different moves • take turns in watching one another to see the different ways each person moves • check to see what body parts you are using • assess if you think the dance has some contrasting features

• invite some people to see your dance

Making it happen: • arrange times for the group to get together, and make sure all the dancers can participate • make sure you have a space to practice • be aware to work cooperatively • repeat sections of the dance so that you all feel as though you are making progress

• teach your guests a section of the dance • have a discussion with your friends to see if you want to keep making dances!

What do you think are the best things about learning to dance? Learning about the freedom and capacity of movement as an art form.

What do you think are the best things about learning to dance? Building your self-confidence and learning how to express yourself.

When did you first start dancing? I started out training to be a professional figure skater, but took my first real ballet class when I was 8.

What advice do you have for young dancers? Keep exploring and enjoying the freedom and expression you find in movement.
