To Honor Elsa by Marnie Ritter

Elsa Williams was Marnie Ritter’s mentor during the 1960’s; Marnie taught at the Elsa Williams School of Needleart in West Townsend, MA, during the 1970’s. Marnie was allowed to take one of Elsa’s designs and replace the wool threads with silks. This design takes it one step further adding metallics and beads. The shapes, design and stitches used in this piece are symbols of Elsa’s beautiful design. Glorious pinks, rose, sky blue, periwinkle, lavender, varied greens and sunny yellow threads are used in the stitching of this piece. Stitches include a varied buttonhole, satin, rows of chain, offset crosses, fishbone, spider’s web, raised chain, and shading variations. Teri Greeves

Shirley Kay Wolfersperger

Teri will chronicle the development of her highly acclaimed, award-winning beadwork from traditional forms to the contemporary work she creates today. Using images from her childhood, growing up in her mother’s trading post on the Wind River Reservation, along with images of the narrative work she has developed today, she will speak to the political, historical, and cultural stories that inspire her.

Am I creative? Can I be more creative? Why am I not creative? In this presentation we will address the question of our own creativity and offer practical ways to spur on our creativity. We will explore taking the bold steps that are necessary to advance toward our potential.

“This Ain’t Your Grandma’s Beadwork!”

Along with being recognized as a wellknown Santa Fe Indian Market artist, Teri’s work is included in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian, the British Museum, and the Heard Museum.

Sponsored by EGA’s Judges Certification Program and Education Department. Net proceeds from Winning Ways benefit the EGA Education Fund.

“Crow Mother Walking”

During this lecture we will identify our current creative status, then complete a short hemispheric dominance inventory to see where we are and where we might go. We will get to know ourselves better and be helped along that path of self-knowledge. Crow Mother, Mother of all the Kachina, leads and prods youngsters along the journey of life. Following Crow Mother, we will take some steps along our own creative way. Please bring a pencil or pen with you.

HELENN RUMPEL

Pueblo Traditional Embroidery Artist

“Embroidery Enlightenment: an Artist’s Concept”

Isabel Gonzales of San Ildefonso Pueblo, a past Indian Arts Research Center artist-in-residence, will share examples of her acclaimed embroidery as she demonstrates the unique Pueblo stitch and more. Our familiarity with Native American art forms usually stops short of Pueblo textiles, yet embroidery remains the most viable and most commonly practiced Pueblo textile art. Today, Isabel and other Pueblo embroiderers strive to continue incorporating the 1,000-yearold tradition in ceremonial garments while simultaneously, they explore and develop new approaches and uses for this centuries-old needle art. And just like EGA, their mission is educational: to share, preserve, and teach the traditional techniques to others. Isabel states, “My intention is to teach the basic embroidery so that it can go on from generation to generation. I want other people to learn and carry it on.” To this end, Isabel teaches at Pojoaque Pueblo’s Poeh Center, a site that focuses on traditional Pueblo art education.

Please join us as Helenn Rumpel reveals what leads her to the combinations of form and light that typify her unique fiber art. Inspired by the spiritual content of the Byzantine, she incorporates bright hues and gem-like qualities in her stitched interpretations of buildings, nature and religious icons yielding luminous color, amazing texture and impressive detail. Helenn will show how diversified subject matter, stitchery techniques and innovative framing of embroidery translate and enhance compositions of beauty, and how teaching reinforces and renews the artistic experience.
