eggdirectory christmas 2021 ™
This Christmas, support one of Scotland’s female-led businesses. You’re sure to find something for everyone on your list in this year’s directory, which is packed with eggclusive™ offers.
gift with joy Well, what a year! Never mind thriving, congratulations on just surviving, it has no doubt taken a lot of strength, 2021 is a year we won’t forget in a hurry. Throughout this challenging time there has however, been pockets of joy, many in fact; posts that have lifted our spirits, that have given us cause to celebrate, to laugh, to be grateful. Pulling some of those highlights together was important for this year’s eggdirectory™ , a chance to once again recognise and celebrate the good, to end on a high. And so in addition to the glorious selection of brilliant female led independent businesses on these pages, your Christmas shopping bible, you’ll also see written pieces from some of our business owners and other good eggs who have shared their news and stories with us. A reminder of the power and joy that can come from community, I hope you love reading it as much as we have enjoyed putting it together. Huge thanks to Jemma and Paula at Meraki Concept Studio for your help with the design, to Alex for managing our inbox and to Teresa Somerfield for snapping this pic of me many moons ago! I hope you have a relaxing Christmas.

My name is Nicola and I am the artist behind Heather and Haggis. I design and make gift products which celebrate places and pastimes in Scotland. My most popular design is “Munros”, featuring some of the tallest and best known mountains in Scotland, and new for this Christmas are my “Bothies” and “Castles” designs. I print almost everything myself here in Edinburgh, including fine bone china mugs, matching coasters, art prints and greetings cards. I also make enamel mugs for outdoorsy types to take on their adventures, and new ceramic fridge magnets which, along with my UK-made tea towels, make perfect letterbox gifts.

Mel Russel and Wendy Isaac, the sisters behind
Outside In Garden Rooms @outsideingardenrooms /outsideingardenrooms www.outsideingardenrooms.co.uk
Was working with your sister always part of the plan?
Wendy and I have talked for years about working together in some form but the right opportunity hadn’t presented itself and living on different sides of the country was a real challenge. During Covid Outside In really began to fly therefore the timing was perfect for Wendy to come on board and setup the East coast arm of the business meaning we finally found the perfect way to work together whilst living on different sides of the country.
What would you say are the pros of working with family?
Absolutely, we have very different qualities. I’m very much a bash on type of person and consider the implications later where Wendy takes a far more calculated, measured approach to things which can bring a real strength to our business. If we both did the same job and had similar expertise there would undoubtedly be more clashes, bringing our own skillset to the table can really help to balance a business. Working with family can be challenging but equally it means that we know each other incredibly well and are very close therefore know when to step back from a disagreement. Equally we both know when and how to apologise should there be a disagreement which there always are in business, the stakes are just too high to let challenges get in the way of a really strong business and more importantly, family ties.

Outside In Garden Rooms @outsideingardenrooms /outsideingardenrooms www.outsideingardenrooms.co.uk
You’ve had your sister by your side for the last year, a very challenging year, how has that felt? I always said I don’t like going it alone as it can be a very scary place with no-one to lean on, share worries, ideas and plans with, particularly when its a sector that is new to me. Now having Wendy a 50/50 partner in the business makes it so much less scary knowing there’s always someone to discuss and share all the scary challenges with, we’re 100% in this together which is a far better place than being on your own. It’s been a phenomenally successful year with incredible growth which just wouldn’t have been feasible had it just been me on my own.
What are your plans for Christmas, sick of the sight of each other or spending it together?
Absolutely spending it together with all the family, can’t wait!! We have a very close family and obviously like so many, the last 18 months of isolation and thinking back to last Christmas where our parents were sat in a gazebo in the garden in the freezing cold for an hour was just awful. We can’t wait to all be back in our happy place, Aberfeldy, where our parents live and be able to just switch off, walk the dog, light the fire, play some UNO and just all be together properly (we’re also all going away for a week to the north of Scotland in November so clearly very happy to be around each other!).

Dixie, Catalog Interiors @cataloginteriors /catalogltd www.cataloginteriors.com
Where did your passion for your business begin? I’ve always had entrepreneurial urges — so when the opportunity to start this venture presented itself I lept at it!
As a little girl, what was your dream job? I always wanted to be a fashion designer, I’ve also always loved the idea of creating and owning an incredible restaurant/bar or hotel.
Who are the three women who inspire you most? Some of my favourite women and those who captivate me the most are in the music business. I absolutely love Rosin Murphy; I once squealed upon meeting her at Rockness and she was so lovely! I also think Christine and the Queens is brilliant. Both she and Roisin were doing such cool and creative things on their Instagram during various lockdowns and it was so fun to see that natural and nonchoreographed side of them. My go-to account on Instagram is @ilemartini. She has brilliant and informative stories, she’s curious, investigative and a real marketing pro. She has exquisite taste too, a natural flair and great eye for colour and interiors.
What can eggs expect to see from you this Christmas? The most INCREDIBLE Swedish paper snowflakes (I’m so excited about these!!) and the biggest gift collection that we’ve ever had!

What was your biggest lesson in 2021? To properly plan our daughter’s summer holidays! And that I need to find a way to get balance back into my life. 2021 has been work, work and more work.
What would you like to find under the tree this year? I’m actually hoping for less this Christmas, I think that we invariably end up with gifts that we do not need... So I’m trying to pilot an idea this year; each family member can pick a favourite shop or charity & everyone can buy them vouchers to donate to that cause! Mine will be treen.
What are you most excited about for 2022? We’re excited to see where 2022 takes Catalog, 2021 has been a year of unprecedented growth, 2022 needs to be about perfecting the offering and ensuring the very best experience for each and every customer.

Briony Helen
One Egg that kept us going through lockdown and beyond, was illustrator Briony Cruden (Briony Helen). Daily lockdown pictures inspired by the community, Briony’s illustrations brought joy to all at a much needed time. We were delighted when Briony shared details of her personal life, through the eyes of her dog Jessie, taking us on their journey as two became four.
September 2020 The tide was out on musselmoon, the sea pulled back to leave the million mussely moorings shining in the rain. But that was back there. And we were elsewhere. The drive had been long and filled with laughter from the front. They both sounded happy, and a bit ridiculous actually. They were playing some sort of guessing game which had gone on for a long time, too long. And they had been singing a lot. He was good. Briony was terrible. I enjoyed watching the sky flash past from my spot in the boot. When the view became mountain tops I had a sense we were close. We’d been here before you see and it had felt special, I could tell. He had known it then too. Briony was the last to catch up. I hoped she’d get it now. She can be a bit slow. Shame. So much going for her. And over all a nice enough girl. Still not great at taking me for runs or doing her illustrations admin. But over all, she’s ok... but back to the story. For I’ve been meaning to tell it for a while. Continues on next page 21

Briony Helen
The mountains surrounded us from all sides. Sun shone though the clouds which were caught in the valley like gazing visitors. It was that biblical sort of light. Almost, but not quite, over the top. I hoped Briony wouldn’t be at her Truman Show chat again. Thinking it was too perfect. Saying the Sky Guys must have an increased budget. Him joining in and pretending to radio the production team and telling them to dial it back. They did that a lot. To which I rolled my eyes a lot. But secretly I liked it. I like when she is happy. It started to rain. Excellent. More realistic. Midges arrived in their thousands. Fantastic. Annoying. Scottish. Familiar. Briony was asking who would be Sam and who would be Frodo out of the two of them. Reference to popular culture unclear. Much laughter at me being Gollum. Reference to popular culture still unclear. Ignored them both. Dweebs. Ran ahead. Considered again the idea of writing my own book “Living With These Guys”. Would give it some more thought out of the earshot of them. My ears pricked up though. He was nervous. I could feel it. That quickening heart beat you feel when something is good and it touches that wee soft spot in your throat and wrinkles your forehead. It was coming to me in the waves around us. The thread which connects us all. The air was vibrating with it. I slowed down. Circled back around them. They had stopped their popular culture chat. They were quiet now. Interesting. We walked through the wet bracken, growing all around the blooming heather, and wound our way away from the road and towards the Hidden Valley. They seemed to decide on a spot at the same time. The air was filled to bursting and I would have said music was playing and yet it wasn’t. It was quiet and loud at the same time. New experience. Briony Helen
They laid out a picnic. Made by him to recreate the first one he’d taken her on. I’d been given a sweet potato wedge on that day. That was a good day. But this time the picnic was never touched. Because it was in the rain, sitting on a picnic rug where the land lay quiet and the watching mountains held their breath that he asked her to marry him. She took a while to look up. She’d been drawing circles in the soil with her fingers. He was holding out a little box. Rain fell on the box and on his hands, on the picnic and on her face. I bashed her hard in the back with my two paws. BOOF. ANSWER HIM. But she doesn’t hear me these days. So? He said. Good. I thought. At least someone can hear me. I looked from him to her. And her to him. Tension tennis. I pawed her again. BOOF BOOF BOOF. LOOK. UP. YOU. TOOL. He’s so nice. You cry with laughter these days, you’ve come really far. She looked up. I looked at her look at him and the mountains look at them. “I’d love to” she said. And so Briony, that girl, is marrying her best friend. She finally saw him. I had known all along though, as had he. Sometimes the things you want the most are right there, you just need to learn to see them. To catch up. The end. Or, the beginning.

The Good Store @thegoodstore.scot /thegoodstore.scot www.thegoodstore.scot
Was working with your sister always part of the plan?
The Good Store was created by the both of us and had always been set out that way but I would say we had different journeys on the way to creating the concept of The Good Store and probably came to the same point from different angles. Which was great as we were able to chat about each others Zero Waste journey and fine tune what worked for our store.
What would you say are the pros of working with family?
We have the same goals, and visions for The Good Store but bring different strengths and attributes to the running of the business which is ideal really. We definitely compliment each others skills!
You’ve had your sister by your side for the last year, a very challenging year, how has that felt?
Our first 2 years in business were during a global pandemic which I think we can all agree has made us appreciate how important spending time with family and loved ones is. We were fortunate enough to see each other every day even through every lockdown it definitely made us appreciate each other and our situation.
What are your plans for Christmas, sick of the sight of each other or spending it together?
We will definitely be spending Christmas together. We both love Christmas time as it means we get to catch up with the rest of the family, eat good food and switch off for a few days. 34

Treehouse Childrenswear @treehousechildrenswear /treehousechildrenswear www.treehousechildrenswear.co.uk
Was working with your sister always part of the plan? Sophie: What plan?! I definitely didn’t have any sort of life/work plan at 23 and living in London. I was still young when Kim asked me to be in business together but with my move back to Edinburgh already in place it was perfect timing. I was determined, and I have a real passion for retail so I was ready for the challenge, and the risks.
What would you say are the pros of working with family? Kim: It’s like working with your best friend. Sophie and I have become close because of Treehouse and we are still going strong nearly 10 years later! We very much bring different qualities. My background is business and HR, I love planning and setting goals, but not so keen on the detail of how a shop window looks! I think Sophie and I can be very honest with each other - she doesn’t let me rush into decisions. Also she picks me up and motivates me when times get tough.

You’ve had your sister by your side for the last year, a very challenging year, how has that felt? Kim: This last year is hard to describe; it feels like the definition of keep calm and carry on! On top of the most challenging business year, Sophie has also been on maternity leave, so I’ve missed her a lot. However, my motto is always ‘you can do anything but you can’t do everything’. You just have to let go of being perfect and just do your best. To be fair, I have phoned her a lot!
What are your plans for Christmas, sick of the sight of each other or spending it together? Kim: We tend to take in in turns so this year we are both with our ‘in-laws’ so the ‘McAllister’ Christmas will be 2022. Our family Christmas is really fun and slightly mad with our parents having 9 grandchildren next year. Family is always first though and we both have this at the core of our values.

Georgia, Gigi’s Cakes @gigiscakesofficial /gigiscakesofficial www.gigiscakes.co.uk
Where did your passion for your business begin? Baking has always been a therapeutic and artistic outlet for me, but it wasn’t until I had my son last year that I decided to leave my job in London, move to Edinburgh, and take on cake making professionally. A number of renowned cake makers have always inspired me: To name a few; Elizabeth Solaru (who helped me take the selfemployment plunge), Jasmine Rae, Rustam Kungurov, and Natalie Sidesurf. I absolutely love contemporary design, hyperrealism, and organic textures. These all play a role in my work. In addition to the phenomenal cake makers out there, I was also inspired by working mums who had taken the time over maternity leave to plan their own businesses. It’s a big step and all the more impressive when done in conjunction with starting (or continuing) to build a family.
As a little girl, what was your dream job?
As a little girl, I had a series of ‘dream jobs’ in mind, but they were all centred around ‘wow-inducing’ creativity. I remember a particular fixation was becoming a special effects makeup artist for movies. I also loved sewing and became obsessed with my mum’s sewing machine when I was about 8 - making anything detailed and beautiful, essentially.

Georgia, Gigi’s Cakes @gigiscakesofficial /gigiscakesofficial www.gigiscakes.co.uk
Who are the three women who inspire you most? I am inspired a lot by the industry I am in and beyond, but my current top three female inspirations are: Elizabeth Solaru (cake industry inspiration and luxury business consultant), Angela Ahrendts (general business inspiration) and Victoria Beckham (I think she’s a brilliant designer, parent, and her work ethic is awesome).
What can eggs expect to see from you this Christmas? Watch out for my hyperrealism series of your favourite Edinburgh brands on social media. This is a secret list of businesses that are Edinburgh born and bred (for the most part) recreated in cake! I’ll also be working on some festive specials over the Christmas season, so stay tuned for sparkles and gold!
What was your biggest lesson in 2021? The biggest learning for me was to just start. I’d loved baking for so long and I’m really grateful that I was able to use lockdown/ maternity leave to make the decision to leave my old job and press the ‘start’ button on a career move I’d wanted to make for so long.
What would you like to find under the tree this year?
Granted, It wouldn’t fit, nor does it fit the Christmas budget at all, but I’m desperate for a Ligne Roset Togo chair and ottoman (I saw one in Catalog in Stockbridge and am completely obsessed). So please please, Father Christmas….?

What are you most excited about for 2022? I’m so excited for the weddings next year, with many couples finally being able to have the event they have always dreamed of (after a two year delay in some cases!). It’s so exciting to know you’ll be a part of making their vision come to life. I’d advise any couple planning their wedding for 2022 to be quick off the mark with booking their suppliers, including their wedding cake maker! Some dates are still available with us, so I’d urge couples to get in touch to secure theirs.

Zoe, My Little Edinburgh @mylittleedinburgh / @mylittlewildings
Where did your passion for your business begin? I’ve always enjoyed photography and I had my very own newborn photography studio for a while, I got to meet beautiful families and then I had my own. I started the My Little Wildlings Instagram & Blog and I shared our IVF story online and it just grew from there, it helped those who were going through the same thing, we had a toddler, twins and then another baby. 4 under 5 could be hectic and I had people to share that with. I started a second account, My Little Edinburgh, on Valentine’s day in 2020, sharing my love for Edinburgh and then the pandemic hit, peoples holidays were cancelled so they got to ‘visit’ from their own homes. In the last 18 months I’ve grown over 190K followers and love sharing my favourite spots around the city.
As a little girl, what was your dream job?
I actually wanted to be a photographer, I wanted to be on the cover of National Geographic, explore and travel. My dad bought me my first camera when I was quite young and I always knew I’d do something creative some day, I just didn’t realise I would love it quite so much and that it would be in my home town.
Who are the three women who inspire you most?
My girls, I have 3 girls and each one are so similar yet so incredibly different. They are talented, strong and just all round gorgeous human beings, I’m so proud of them and they inspire me every single day.

Vivian Maier. She was a street photographer in NYC. And no one knew this until they discovered her images after she passed. I find her work inspiring and just love the way she shoots a self portrait.
What can eggs expect to see from you this Christmas? I am putting together my very first Scottish Gift Guide, which will be on the blog this christmas. I am looking to showcase some of my favourite Scottish businesses. I’ve also got some exciting christmas content on Instagram too. I can’t wait to share it all!
What was your biggest lesson in 2021? Not everything goes to plan, and that’s really OK. Usually means something bigger and better is on its way to you.
What would you like to find under the tree this year? I would LOVE a new waterproof backpack. I love rainy season in Edinburgh and a decent backpack to keep my camera gear safe would be top of my list. I have my eye on a Doughnut backpack from Swish!
What are you most excited about for 2022?
The last 18 months has been such an unexpected adventure, that I can’t wait to see where the next year takes us. One big moment we have coming is we will be moving house and that alone will be huge for the kids. I started a new venture with My Little Edinburgh for fun and I can’t wait to see what 2022 has in store for it!

The Menopause Sisters @themenopausesisters /themenopausesisters www.themenopausesisters.com
Was working with your sister always part of the plan? No, it all began when I was planning my first Menopause Yoga workshop. Whilst yoga breathwork, gentle movement and relaxation was going to be the core of the workshop I thought it would be a great idea to invite an expert to collaborate. I was originally thinking of asking a nutritionist and then I had an ‘aha’ moment and asked my sister, a GP, if she would be up for doing it. She had recently taken the further training with the British Menopause Society, and so everything fell into place very quickly. our first workshop went so well we knew we could collaborate and create something unique.
What would you say are the pros of working with family? There’s no tip toeing around, we can say what we think. We’re both strong women who have clear ideas about what can help support women at this time in their life, and thankfully these align. With Claire’s medical background, we can offer an east meets west approach. Claire doesn’t enjoy the physical practice of yoga (asana) and yet finds real benefit from breathwork (pranayama); she likes to run, I can’t think of anything worse! Whilst I’m open to conventional medicine, I’m immediately drawn to alternative medicine like ayurveda, acupuncture and homeopathy. Together we can offer a holistic approach which we have found our clients really appreciate.

The Menopause Sisters @themenopausesisters /themenopausesisters www.themenopausesisters.com
You’ve had your sister by your side for the last year, a very challenging year, how has that felt? It’s been brilliant. There’s been a lot of quick 2 minute phone calls and longer zoom discussions. She lives in north London and so with me in Edinburgh it’s meant we have seen and spoken to each other over the past year than we might have otherwise. Having a new project and venture together has been exciting but most importantly being able to help the women who have attended our workshops and receive the feedback we have has been humbling. Most recently we were asked by UK Health Radio to host a show on the menopause and so whilst we had never planned to work together or even thought about the possibility, we now host a weekly show.
What are your plans for Christmas, sick of the sight of each other or spending it together?
We’re hoping to see each other with our parents. It’s been a challenging time for everyone around the globe and it definitely reaffirmed the importance of family.

Louise Maclean Every Thursday in the Egg community we create some space to celebrate Good News. We’ve seen thousands of posts, thank you for sharing them with us; the business highs, the funnies that have made us smile at the most trying of times, and the good news health. In March we welcomed a good news post from Louise Maclean, little wonder it was our most “liked” of 2021.
Tell us about yourself, Louise First and foremost I’m a mummy to Lucas (12) and Natey (10), I’m also a wife, a daughter, a director of a business, a friend, a sister and a boss! In the middle of the Covid year of Chaos I was diagnosed with primary breast cancer and quietly began a journey through scans, mri, surgeries, 6 months of chemo and radio. I posted my good news as a symbol of hope - to those also struggling with life’s curve balls and to show that it’s do-able. Absolutely zero fun but the cancer journey is manageable but early detection is key. Trust your instincts and get yourself checked. I waited about 12 seconds from feeling a lump to phoning the GP and I was in her office within 15 minutes – in the middle of a pandemic!
Hard to sum up, but what has the last 12 months been like for you? I had my first surgery at the end of September 2020 to remove the cancer. I had a therapeutic mammaplasty which effectively reduced both breasts considerably whilst removing the cancerous tissue.

Louise Maclean My boobs were hopelessly uneven and lopsided after breast feeding the boys and this was deemed the best course of action. (yes – “free boob job” did go through my head – I know, so shallow but hey, there has to be a positive somewhere?!) Sadly 48 hours after my surgery, my Dad died of cancer so I had to be discharged from my hospital to go to his bedside and be with him as he took his final bow. Utterly heartbreaking. Chemo was from October 20-March 21 – and it’s hard but for me, I found it better than expected. I worked all the way through it and that gave me a focus, something to think about other than cancer and grief. I lost all my hair – I wasn’t brave enough to use the cold cap – well done to those that do! That was the hardest part, shaving my hair off – well that takes some getting used to and I found myself avoiding mirrors as I loathed how I looked. But I soon learned to embrace it and rarely wore a wig. Oddly, my boys often asked me to wear a wig if we were out – they were more conscious of it than me. I then had further surgery and radio. Finally in May 2021, I finished active treatment and am on tamoxifen for 10 years. Tamoxifen is the hormone drug that has put me into instant chemical induced menopause – and that’s a whole other topic! However, my cancer was being fed by oestrogen so to prevent recurrence the tamoxifen stops my ovaries from working and producing oestrogen.
Was it hard to share your story on Egg and how did it feel when the comments and support came through from the group? No – it wasn’t hard to share my story – I’ve often been accused of being an “over-sharer”! I wanted to give hope and raise a smile. 1 in 7 of us will be touched by breast cancer and I wanted to show that whilst it really is no fun at all, it’s ok. I chased away those months, couldn’t get through them fast enough. That’s just how I handled it, I was always keen to get on with it, get through it, get my life back. 75
eggstories
™
Louise Maclean And I was fortunate, as a curative case, my cancer had not spread. 961 women have died in October 2021 from secondary breast cancer – there is no cure for secondary breast cancer. There are treatments but no cure and I hope to raise awareness of this as I continue to recover and rebuild.
Who are the women that have supported you this year? My running friends – my oncologist told me to stay “heart healthy” and as I had always been a bit of a runner (and I use this in the loosest possible sense), my running friends were my therapy. I ran 15 kms every week during chemo. Through all weathers and all routes around the Pentlands with my mates, laughing and bitching about our husbands like we always do! Some days in the depths of winter steam would stream off my head like a just boiled kettle! My mum was a bit shell shocked with losing Dad to cancer and watching her only daughter going through it all but she moved in with us during lockdown 2 and become Chief of the Home schooling Household – result!! I actually think having that purpose helped her in those first few grief stricken months
Has the last 12 months changed your outlook on life and if so how? Well, here’s the thing – no, it hasn’t! Life is for living and I fully intend to LIVE! When the surgeon told me I had cancer, I just sat in front of him and said “oh for f***s sake”, then I repeatedly swore a lot but I didn’t cry or shriek or howl.
Continues on next page 76

™
Louise Maclean I said “ok, how do we deal with this?”. Every doctor, surgeon, nurse and radiographer I encountered were delightful, they kept me sane during the darker moments – like when I had a spectacular anaphylactic allergic reaction to one of the chemo drugs and they all rallied round doing what they do best and saving me! One thing I would like to do, is to cry. I haven’t cried at all since diagnosis and I haven’t cried about my Dad and I used to be such a crier! I don’t know if the old adage of “what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger” and I’m now a fortress but I would love to cry again. I’ve even tried watching DIY SOS and still nothing – if EGGS have any recommendations of how to unblock this plug, I’m all ears. I’ve had counselling and support from Maggies Centre for a year now and I would recommend Maggies to everyone touched by cancer.
What are your plans for Christmas? My brother and his family are coming to stay, along with Mum and we are treating ourselves to Christmas Day at Prestonfield House – reference question 5 - Life is for LIVING! I’ve long since admired James Thomson and I have spoken to him regularly over the last 18months (being in the same industry) so I can’t wait to get glammed up and have a luxurious day there.
What do you hope to find under the tree? I’m hoping Santa might buy me ski boots and I can try them out as early in 2022 as possible!

Áine and Aisling, the sisters behind
Little Blue Door Vintage @littlebluedoorvintage www.littlebluedoorvintage.com
Was working with your sister always part of the plan? It was always a dream of both of ours to open our own vintage shop as we share a passion for thrifting and second handing shopping. We have lived apart for seven years; Aisling has been living here in Edinburgh and I was based in Ireland. We both love this city and I decided to relocate to open our store.
What would you say are the pros of working with family? Being siblings means we are really comfortable being open and honest with each other which is very important when running a business. We both have the same university qualifications but had very different career paths before beginning our store so we both bring different experiences to the table.
You’ve had your sister by your side for the last year, a very challenging year, how has that felt? We felt privileged to have each other during the lockdowns, it was such a tough year being separate from the rest of our family but we kept each other’s spirits up and motivated each other to keep going. Our shop has been our dream for so long that we feel the pandemic really pushed us to be more creative and think outside the box. We adapted by making the digital transition by opening our online store. Interview continues on next page 80

Briony Helen August 2021
It was a stunning day. It had rained heavily the night before. Lashed it down in fact. Water had run down the valley like I’d never seen it, rivers now where even streams didn’t exist before, water rushing down every surface and the visibility so low you couldn’t see the sisters rising proud. We laughed at the rain. I had batted back the well wishes for sunshine. I wanted it misty and moody I’d said, “more atmospheric”. Well, I’d got that alright. We tilted our heads back, tongues out to taste the rain. I took photos of us that looked like two kids on a wet break time. I picked wild flowers for the next day, all round the blooming heather. The next morning, the sky was cracked open. Sun fighting with storm, misty and moody jostling with sunny and bright. A compromise if ever I’d seen one. It was staggering. It was perfect. Jessie had given us her best wishes, she’d said she couldn’t cope with the excitement. That she’d burst. That it was best she stayed back. She was eating pancakes whole in her holiday retreat on the banks of Loch Ness and pondering the ways of change. The then, the now, how it had all come full circle. Taking credit for knowing before I did. We had decided that it would be just the two of us that day and one friend to witness, one photographer to capture it and our humanist, now a friend too, Aly. Briony Helen
I walked into the valley myself. No surprise, I was late (not actually my fault, that’s another story though). He’d be waiting. I felt a shyness I didn’t know I had. We’d been friends for so long. I didn’t know the train had a loop to carry it, so I chucked it over my arm as I made my way down the rocky path. White horses of water roared down the sides of the mountains. I really thought I’d feel nervous by now, but I still wasn’t. “That’s because when something is right there is nothing be nervous about” Jessie would say. “That’s because we’ve done it all before” he would say “a thousand times”. I thought about how it had happened, knowing I could never tell it in a way that would do it justice. In the way you can look at the night sky dotted with stars and reach for your phone to catch them only to look down and see they aren’t there. You can’t catch magic (or light from stars bazillions of miles and years away). That was us. That was this day. I saw him, like seeing him for the first time, and he took my hand. “I’ve been bitten by so many midges” he said. “A thousand times more midges, just like you said” And we laughed. The humanist looked to the skies and threw her arms wide “NEVER before have I seen the mountains look like this.” She said “They are celebrating for you”. And so, there on the banks of the river, we listened as Aly told us our two stories, wound together into one because they had been too similar to tell the difference she said. Your eyes looked on fire, he said. I felt happier than I could ever remember having been. And so hands held tight, eyes alight and hearts light we got married, in the hidden valley. We did it.” 91

Pilar Garcia de Leaniz @pilardeleaniz /imomo.co.uk www.imomo.co.uk
Where did your passion for your business begin? It began when I first arrived in Edinburgh almost 10 years ago. I was inspired by Imogen, a little girl I looked after when I arrived in Edinburgh with the aim to improve my English. It was an unusually sunny day in Scotland, when Imogen and I were drawing and playing after coming back from her school. I had just come back from my home town in Spain with a handmade bracelet for Imogen I made by myself during my stay there and an ambitious idea, start a business! The little girl was very pleased with her handmade bracelet and wanted to say thanks to me with a special drawing. “This is a drawing of our shops. I will run a makeup shop and you will be next to mine with an accessories shop,” she said cheerfully. That day I realised that my dream was going to be true. With a little sparkle and magic dust from Imogen, I created imomo.
As a little girl, what was your dream job? When I was little, my dream job was being working with something relative creativity and teaching, it is actually what I do which I love. I work part-time at Edinburgh College of Art where I teach and combine my skills in design, illustration and marketing, the rest of my time I work for clients worldwide in publishing and advertising and running my shoponline, imomo.co.uk

Pilar Garcia de Leaniz @pilardeleaniz /imomo.co.uk www.imomo.co.uk
Who are the three women who inspire you most? Actually I have more than 3! Imogen who I mentioned earlier and my mum and 3 creative aunties who has been my main source of inspiration. They have been always fascinated about antiques and paintings, they invest in buying great pieces of art that have inspired me my entire life. Also, they have worked with ceramic, textiles and painting so the foundation of my creativity and artwork come from there.
What can eggs expect to see from you this Christmas? In Imomo you can find my award-winning artwork applied into prints and books inspired from nature, women, wellbeing and self-love. Also, you can commission customised artwork based on a photo with your partner, your family, or your pet! Visit my website and Instagram @pilardeleaniz to see what I make.
What was your biggest lesson in 2021? Don’t give up and believe in your work, it is paid off!
What would you like to find under the tree this year?
I would love to find this year under the tree a colourful handmade rug with a cheerful face of an animal on it! And plants!
What are you most excited about for 2022?
The new exciting creative projects and the people I will meet on the way!

Chloe, Chocolatia @chocolatia20 www.chocolatia.co.uk
Where did your passion for your business begin? My business is making chocolates, so my passion for that completely comes from my love of food and all things sweet. Chocolate is a a beautifully technical thing and it’s been the best challenge for me to learn all about it.
As a little girl, what was your dream job? My dream job was always to be a chef like my grandmother (Mormor) was. It was always my plan to work with food.
Who are the three women who inspire you most? Fortunately I have been raised and I am surrounded by strong and independent women and I have them to thank for my courage and drive. I pull inspiration from all of my family really. In the industry, I am inspired by Jessica Washburn - a fabulous chocolatier over in the states who’s journey I have followed closely as she opened her first shop last year as well as raising a family. Her chocolates are stunning and she gives me inspiration and faith to keep at my journey. Pamela Brunton is a very talented chef behind Inver restaurant which she runs with her partner Rob, she helped ignite that initial spark in me that was my love for creating food. Lorna McNee is a very close friend of mines and currently head chef at Cail Bruich at Glasgow who I can always go to for advice and support.

What can eggs expect to see from you this Christmas? I’m so excited for Christmas to come around again! I am launching bespoke event calendars that will be filled with one of a kind stunning Christmas themed chocolates, as well as beautiful hand painted Christmas trees that will be filled with luxurious seasonal fillings.
What was your biggest lesson in 2021? The biggest thing I’ve learned this year is to trust in what I am doing and what I am producing and to let my product speak for itself. It’s so easy to fall down that rabbit hole of comparing yourself to others and doubting everything. But I’ve learned time and time again to just stay true to my values and create what I love and it will speak volumes.
What would you like to find under the tree this year?
As it’s been such a busy year, I’ve been cherishing my down time so I’d love to find some pampering things under the tree like candles or anything beautiful for my home from Holly at Holly Grows in Edinburgh or from Sophie over at Quince & Cook in Perth!
What are you most excited about for 2022?
I am so excited to see what 2022 has to offer for me. My business is constantly growing so I can’t wait to see where it goes, I’m hoping 2022 will be a big one for me.
