2022, what a year! If you’ve been in my company at any point over the last five years, you’ll have heard me talk about the BIG dream - to have a home for egg. A place to bring the online community offline and support local businesses.
I’ve held onto the dream, not letting it go but never really seeing how I could make it happen. And then, a couple of chance conversations at the end of 2021, there was an opportunity too good to miss, a space unlike any I’d ever seen and egg & co was born.
It was the most fulfilling four months of my journey so far. We welcomed almost 100 brilliant female-powered businesses into the pop-up space. We saw women realise their dreams. We helped build confidence and we partied.
Once again I realised that together, we can do so much. And in fact, together is the only way I want to do it. We’re ending the year on a high, in a glorious new space. Come join
us at Waverley Market until 22nd December 2022.
As the philosopher Lao Tzu once said, “The journey of a thousand miles begins with just one step…”
I couldn’t agree more. Thank you all for your continued support, have a wonderful Christmas from me, and the rest of team egg.
You’ll find our impressive new egg & co space on the upper level of Waverley Market, near the steps to the station in the east end of town. Open for six weeks from Thursday 10th November to Thursday 22nd December, we’ll be bringing you incredible independent shopping, amazing gift inspiration, coffee and so much more.
Five things you need to know about our new pop-up shop…
Many of our egg & co residents from our George Street days will be joining us again but we’ve also added some cool new businesses including This is Unfolded and Voxblock. The space is a whopping 10,000 square feet so there’s lots to see!
ALL
From Christmas wreath making workshops to our very own launch party on 17 November, we’ll be hosting lots of events and workshops in our new space, as well as welcoming hundreds of businesses. ?Our first bricks and mortar retail space on George Street Edinburgh was an immersive and creative hub, housing some of the most exciting female-led Scottish brands as well as offering delicious coffee, exclusive events and dynamic co-working spaces. Now, as we embark on a new chapter and open egg & co 2 for the festive season, we thought we’d look back on five fantastic egg residents from our first pop-up space and find out where they are now.
We buy discarded materials from the luxury fashion industry and ethically craft them into beautiful and functional, limited-edition womenswear. We are a radically transparent fashion brand that has on average a 90% reduction in our carbon footprint. Having the opportunity to share our ethos, and why we’re so passionate about sustainable fashion, with new customers is part of the reason we love our job.
It was such a great space filled with like-minded women who were all championing one another. We made countless contacts and life-long friends. Being part of egg & co also gave us the confidence to set up another long-term pop up. Since our time at egg & co, we’ve been in New York showcasing our collection at the Dressed To Kilt charity fashion show. It was an amazing honour to be invited to take part and to see our pieces on the catwalk.
Where can we find Beira now?
We are currently popping up at 140
Bruntsfield Place until Christmas and we’ll have an additional pop-up in Stockbridge from the beginning of December until March 2023 at Space at 17 on St Stephen Street. This year’s Autumn/Winter collection is one of our biggest yet and we can’t wait for our stores to be filled with gorgeous new knitwear, jackets and coats.
Best advice for someone starting their own business?

The co-founder of Beira tells us what makes the sustainable Scottish fashion brand so unique…
Founder of MISSA & KISSA tells us about the story behind her Edinburgh-based jewellery brand…
I’ve been a jewellery lover for as long as I can remember, but I always struggled to find pieces that were affordable and wouldn’t irritate my sensitive skin. After months of in-depth research and preparation, I launched my minimalist hypoallergenic jewellery brand MISSA & KISSA in September 2021.
How was egg & co for you?
I joined egg & co when my business was 5 months old and met an extraordinary
number of new customers, many of whom have turned into our most loyal supporters and returning customers.
I’m happy to share the news that we have a shop space at Jaune on Rose Street.
Yes! I’m at the egg &co festive pop-up in Waverley Market.
Reach out and make connections with others in the small business community; there are a lot of kind people who are willing to share their expertise. Shop the latest collection at https://missakissa.co or join us in store at egg & co 2.
It initially started as a side hustle in late 2020 but became my full-time job in April 2021. I am passionate and put a huge focus on trendless, individual style, sustainability and reusing what's already there. That, combined with my personal struggle to find timeless, highquality vintage and preloved led to TORN vintage as it is today.
Popping up at egg & co was transformative for my business. I had been part of the egg Facebook group for a couple of years before the pop-up on George Street and being part of a supportive and empowering group of fellow women and business owners in real life was a no brainer!
My business is primarily based online, but I do pop-ups around Edinburgh when opportunities arise. I’m also proud to be
part of egg & co in Waverley Market so we can end the year with a bang!
Just start. You might think you don't know what you're doing or what your niche is, but just start and I PROMISE, you will eventually figure it out!

Vassia Founder of TORN Vintage talks about the reasons she launched her online womenswear and accessories shop with a contemporary approach to vintage...
The founder of Fruit Salad Flowers shares her story about the brand…
The pop-up space meant I had my own physical shop, but I also got to share the experience with lots of other businesswomen which helped alleviate the pressure of running your own shop. So many doors have opened for me since then.
Mainly flowering events and weddings but I am also delighted to be back at egg & co in Waverley Market. I will be selling fresh and dried flowers, candles, Christmas wreaths and more.
Best advice for someone starting their own business?
Be authentically yourself. If you truly love what you do, it shows.

Fruit Salad was my lockdown baby and officially born in 2020. I wanted to bring a modern and fun approach to floristry in Edinburgh and I felt there was a bit of a gap in the market for a contemporary floral studio.
I joined the George Street egg & co because it was too good an opportunity to pass up - when else would I be able to say I had a shop on George Street?!
The founder of Rare Birds Books tells us about the story behind her bookshop in Stockbridge...
The business started with the online book club and book subscription five years ago - at the time it was the service I was looking for but couldn’t find. I was extremely passionate about women writers and getting their work the recognition it deserved and Rare Birds offered me a way to do that. By the end of 2020 we were desperate to bring our community back together in real life and I started working on the idea of a bookshop that only stocked titles written by women, trans women and non-binary writers. We wanted a fun, friendly space where we could shout about books we loved. The Stockbridge bookshop opened in August 2021 and the rest is history!
We joined egg & co on George Street because I loved the idea of a popup to meet new people. It provided a launchpad for all sorts of small businesses to sell in-person and for people to discover new brands, so it was fun meeting other small business owners in Edinburgh and just having fun with the wonderful community.
Our shop in Stockbridge is open seven days a week. We’re also online too - our subscription ships worldwide.
Start small! It’s not the most glamorous advice but it’s so much easier to experiment and take risks in those early days when your business is more of a side project and not something you’re relying on to keep a roof over your head.

Three Robins is the first plant milk brand in the UK specifically designed for busy oat milk loving families like ours. Rich in calcium and with no added sugars, we fortify our oat drink with the good stuff everyone needs for healthy bodies and active minds.
When one of my three boys became lactose intolerant, we started drinking oat milk but struggled to find a brand that fitted our family’s needs. There was a gap in the market for something with great flavour and nutrition.
I was determined to develop a product that would taste as good in cereal as it did in coffee, and to create a brand that offered a good mix of flavour and formats to help families switch to dairy alternatives. And so, Three Robins was born. Our last name is Robinson, and the name ‘Three Robins’ represents our three little boys.
It has been a long process and much harder than I imagined but fortunately I like a challenge! I made the decision to start the business just as Covid-19 hit at the beginning of 2020 – not great timing. I bought a nut milk machine and made oat milk in my kitchen, putting it in
glass bottles and giving it out to friends to try. However, I quickly realised that while making my own oat milk was fun, it wasn’t a scalable business model.
In early 2021, I began working with food scientists to develop a recipe that could be produced at scale and also started the process of finding a manufacturer who would be able to process and pack
the product for me. I’ve been really fortunate to work with LUX, an amazing Edinburgh-based food and drink agency, since the beginning and they’ve provided lots of industry insight along the way. Finally, after a successful pitch to a big manufacturer of plant milks in the UK, we got on the production line in April 2022 allowing us to launch to market in May.
I’ve tried ALL the milk alternatives and appreciate that there is a certain degree of preference when it comes to choosing a plant milk but, oat milk is so versatile and offers other advantages that it wins every time for me. Oat has nutrition and is one of the most sustainable options, with a lower water, carbon and land usage footprint than many other varieties such as soy or almond milk.
Is it hard running your own business and being a mum of three?
Yes! But without my three boys there would be no Three Robins - they are the inspiration behind it. It can be hard finding time to make the most of all the business opportunities, and I often feel I’m being pulled in different directions but, that said, I feel very grateful to have successfully started a business. I’ve found a new career which I love and I’m able to do it alongside family life.
The most rewarding part of having your own business?
Happy customers! There’s nothing better than seeing people enjoy a product you dreamt up and then turned into something tangible on a shop shelf.

The egg card offers card holders hundreds of unique offers, from cherry picked brands across Scotland. When you become an egg card partner, you enjoy lots of brilliant benefits including exposure across our platforms (Facebook, Instagram and newsletters) a listing on our website; a 6-month free trial with the Appointedd booking system; and egg partner stickers to show passers-by that your business is egg approved. There’s a lot to love. But don’t just take our word for it. Three egg card partners share their stories on why they love being part of the club…
“I became an egg card partner in July 2022 just a month after launching my business, A Wee Taste Wine and Grazing Board Bar. I wanted to expand my reach and attract like-minded women. It worked! The egg card has brought us so many new customers that are keen to support local and female run businesses.”
Karly Zagorac, owner of A Wee Taste (egg card holders receive 10% off).
“I became an egg card partner in August 2021, shortly after opening my first Brow Bar studio in Meadowbank. I’ve never looked back. Being an egg card partner has been such a positive experience and helped my business grow considerably. The recommendations, sense of community and exposure you receive as a small business is fantastic. I’ve also seen a huge surge in bookings by using the Appointedd booking system. It’s super easy for clients to book treatments and it’s saved me a lot of admin time and stress!”
Jenni Fyfe, owner of The Brow Bar (egg card holders receive a whopping 25% off all services).
“egg secured 30 new clients in two months and raised my profile, following our 6-month partnership. I’ve never seen such a high conversion of clients. This is the most successful piece of advertising I’ve ever done.”
Jen Beardsley, A partner of St James’ Place Wealth Management (egg card partners receive a free financial review).

We celebrated our son’s graduation at Blackbird in Tollcross. We had a delicious lunch, a few cocktails and saved a whopping £68 using the card. It was such a fantastic afternoon and they looked after everyone brilliantly, from my beautiful boy Stefan who has a high level of needs to my 88-year-old gran.
– Sharon DuncanA rare baby free evening and a girlfriend visiting from London resulted in a fabulous evening at Rabble Taphouse & Grill, just off George Street. You get 15% off food with your egg card so obviously we had an extra cocktail and churros. The food was fab, cocktails and wine delish and service fantastic.
– Felicity McHoskI had a great evening at The Voyage of Buck. We arrived at 7.30pm and left around 12.15am after lots of chat, fantastic cocktails, food and wine. 20% off with your egg card so the card almost paid for itself with one visit. A wee hidden gem.
– Jenny TylerMaddie & Marks do the best shoes for toddlers. I managed to get my little one to stay calm and get her feet measured - no mean feat I can tell you! Plus, I got an egg discount!

Three good news stories from our egg community to end this year’s directory on a high
21 October
I am looking for a particular person called Anne who is a taxi driver. She was magically sitting in her taxi outside my flat and took me and my mum to Simpsons a couple of days ago. I just wanted to say thanks for being a wonderful driver and let her know that my little boy was born 45 minutes after we arrived! If you are or know of an Anne
who is a taxi driver, I would love to make contact and get a message through to her! (Picture of our newest little one)
*UPDATE* Anne, our magical taxi driver, is found! Thanks to Gillian. Thanks everyone for your very nice comments and helping to #findanne
I took over Simpson’s Florist mid pandemic. It’s been a rollercoaster,
that’s for sure! A couple of months ago Fleurs de Villes got in touch to ask if we wanted to take part in their exhibition which started yesterday at the St James Quarter. We were tasked with making a 6-foot floral mannequin of Frida Kahlo out of flowers. There were many sleepless nights after they sent us the photo they wanted us to copy. Anyway, I’m really happy to share the finished creation with you. I was so pleased and slightly stunned with how it came together. Even more stunned when we were awarded the best in [the] show!
Today I’m adding the finishing touches to my paintings for my first exhibition in Brick Lane, London. In 2020, I was filled with anxiety trying to juggle myself between home schooling and working in intensive care during the pandemic. I started painting to relieve stress and I’ve never looked back! My first painting sold through EGG and I’m sure nothing would
have ever become of it if it wasn’t for this platform. Thank you to EGG for enabling this great opportunity! #bricklanegallery #goodnewsthursday
