Situated between Paris ring-road and the municipality of Pantin, the site enjoys nonetheless the proximity with Parc de la Villette and hosts one of the most frequented Parisian markets. The project answers to the wish of the city of Paris to renew the image of the site and give new life to the neighbourhood. The new building proposes to rebuild the covered market, opened twice a week, and support it with the presence of other activities. The market, placed on the ground floor, is therefore conceived to be easily transformed into a showroom or a projection hall for temporary events. Above it, the first floor is dedicated to offices, while a hotel occupies 4 floors. Finally, the upper floors host a gym and a restaurant with a panoramic view on Parc de la Villette. Knowing that the city continuously evolves, we obliged ourselves to design the entire building to allow a complete reconversion of each floor. A structural study allowed us to remove all intermediate pillars, so that the building stands exclusively thanks to the facades despite the 16,3m depth. A particular attention was also given to natural illumination and energetic consumption.

Attention to materiality and budget
GUIDING THROUGH LIGHT Vivendi sport facilities, Boulogne-Billancourt Professional work, designed with Faustine Bertrand and Damien Fraulob for SQUAD Architectes from RIBA stage 2 to 3. Cooperation with AABA (Architectural Project Coordinator), High Graph Architecture, DVA, DVVD. Client: Vivendi
The project consists in the creation of a swimming pool and a gym in the new Vivendi campus on Ile Seguin, close to Paris. The two activities find their place inside one of the seven buildings composing the campus. The overall geometry and external aspect of the building are designed by the AABA studio, while SQUAD Architectes insert itself in the process to design the interiors and define the architectural experience of the visitor. The proposal chooses to use light to guide the public through the building and make them discover the space. From the entrance hall, a line of light brings visitors upstairs to find the cosiness of a little lounge and the smoothness of the gym furniture. Just in the same way, another stripe of light runs downstairs, where wooden lockers welcome swimmers and separate the space between dry and wet area. Here the room changes to an enveloping white, magnified by the natural light coming from the lateral and zenithal openings. The pool, in visual connection with the river, is therefore perceived as an open space. Details are much more than subordinate elements; they can be regarded as the minimal units of signification in the architectural production of meanings. Design for a world-leading firm
DESIGNING FOR DESIGNERS
Valeo is a French born world-leading global automotive supplier known for its innovative technologies. Its headquarters has to stand like a landmark to represent its values. For this reason the building proposed in Creteil, France, is an example of contemporary architecture, where everything is optimized and studied to be not only aesthetically appealing, but also efficient and functional. Designed to host 1100 employees, the building is also the firm new research and development pole. At the ground floor, workers can access several specific workshops, connected to a showroom for selected clients, and a test track.

An innovative type of productive park
GATHERING AND PRODUCING Ecoparc, Bobigny Competition, selected project in phase 1, designed for International d’Architecture Promoter : DCF
This ambitious project wanted to renovate and revitalise an industrial area in Bobigny, France. With the goal of creating a new concept of sustainable productive park, the Ecoparc proposed a dense environment in which public services and private activities could mix together. Refusing to close the site, the project proposes to integrate the classic workshops with a park, a kindergarten, a restaurant a fitness club, and an open exposition place. The result is a complex and liveable place, that welcomes not only the workers, but also the neighbours. Materials and structural systems were selected to be flexible, durable and not polluting. In the same way, nature was used not only as decorating strategy, but also to improve the energetic performance of the buildings. They were studied in fact to augment water permeability, reduce air and noise pollution, mitigate the heatisland effect.

Expression of a personal understanding of tectonic architecture
FRAMING HOMES Home, Milan MSc03-MSc04 Activity, Long Master Thesis Supervisors: Mads Dines Petersen, Lars Vabbersgaard Andersen
The project focuses on the theme of dwelling in dense cities with the goal of giving citizens ‘homes’ instead of ‘housings’. Strategies and theories learned through a bibliographic review are applied to the design of new dwellings in the city of Milan, Italy, that aim to blur the boundaries between artificial and natural landscape and to give inhabitants the feeling of belonging from the place in which they dwell, even called the feeling of being home. Acknowledging that the family structure is in constant evolution and members’ needs are not only very diverse, but also change in time according to age and habits, the apartment solutions propose spaces that can be adapted to suit inhabitants. The design focuses on the study of flats for four members families creating a flat that originally presents itself as a three bedrooms apartment provided of studio, dining room, balcony, and a large terrace, but able to be split throw a system of movable partitions in two separated units and in two different layouts. In every configuration the presence of a private outdoor space as well as the internal functionality is guaranteed.

Promotion of a new urban life-style
SCENERY SET-UP Theme park, Nuoro Professional work, designed with Prof. Arch. Matteo Fraschini, Anna Oggioni, Veronica Notaro, Silvia Molina.
This project is located in Nuoro, a city of Sardinia island in Italy. It assembles functions and buildings to preserve a continuous dialogue between indoor and outdoor spaces, architecture and park. Nature is always present in the project, but is interpreted and shaped in different ways. There are greenhouses, fruit gardens, vegetable gardens, flower beds, roof gardens, terraces, and woods. All the chosen plants are typically present in the territory of Nuoro and create a new environment that is exposition of the territory. Walking through the park indeed people cross different landscapes and learn about Sardinia. Moreover the multiplicity of species guaranties a lovable, variable, vivid place in all seasons. Finally, several buildings support the park and host varied activities, from cultural to sports and commercial.
I don’t divide architecture, landscape and gardening; to me they are one. (Luis Barragan) On the top, master plan and prospective view from Eastern square with park access.

Study of the concept of preservation in an experimental way
PRESERVING The presence of the absence, Pyramiden Concept Competition
Every line on the paper leaves an indelible sign. Just in the same way, every human act writes on our lands a piece of history that should be kept in our memories. Nevertheless the need of remembering does not necessarily translate architecturally into the preservation of every human construction in the state in which it presents itself. Whereas memory requires evocative spaces, made to contemplate, admire, and disclose. To both underline the historical steps of the area and reconnect the original landscape with the future destiny of the island of Spitbergen, in Norway, the project proposes to remove all the Soviet buildings of the site, but keeping track of them through a mark on the ground, revisiting Brandi’s concept of ‘astanza’, the presence of absence. A ground print, as a Derrida’s ‘diffarance’, underlines the original position of the buildings and remembers in visitors the destiny of the area of being abandoned. The void will indelibly emphasize the presence of what is not there anymore. At the same time, removing the industrial buildings the island of Spitbergen returns to its original natural vocation.

Social value of the project
DESIGNING FOR SOCIAL Totem, Kigali Postgraduate Master Activity, designed and realized with Basare Mukabalela Project exposed during the event Fuorisalone 2012 in Ventura Lambrate, Milan Supervisors: Gaddo Morpurgo, Alice Cappelli, Maria Pellerano
Craftsman and student, living and working together for a month in Kigali, Rwanda. The project is a means to start a process of technical innovation and craft awareness of transmitting local knowledge and tradition. After studying Rwandan pottery and plaiting with banana tree fibre, I designed a totem of Rwandan techniques. The project introduced a template in the traditional process of realization, which typically creates objects with a good shape command, but without preliminary project. This object is the first move to a new way of producing and mixing old traditions and new technologies from two different worlds. (Ezio Manzini) On the top, photograph of realized objects and possible matches.
That’s what I feel, an outside and an inside and me in the middle, perhaps that’s what I am, the thing that divides the world in two, on the one side the outside, on the other the inside, that can be as thin as foil. I’m neither one side nor the other. Doors and windows could be considered as the markers of boundaries as well as devices that permit the broiling of space towards the exterior. “In-between”, which creates a middle place. Power to become symbols of exchanges and encounters. Doors and windows as the various screens that organize the face and interface of our mediating with the world. Any limit or border has a mediating role that permits communication and allows for mutual passage. (Samuel Beckett)
