Assembling and Aggregating is a fabrication method, used for The Ex . Co . Ex . City project.

It is a part of the design methodology used to make the infrastructure of the interior.

Assembling - the act of gathering something together;

- to connect or put together the parts of ( ... ). Aggregating - taking all units as a sum / total / combination; - forming by collecting particles into a whole mass.

Bridge In The Ex . Co . Ex . City the Submarine Wharf becomes a bridge between the public and the commercial part of the Innovation Dock.

Condenser This project aims at becoming a social condenser. By structuralizing the way the companies of the Innovation Dock works, their need of collaboration and visibility can be fulfilled.

City A city can be seen as a dynamic organism constantly changing and developing. It is a unit made of different parts that affects each other and works together as a constantly moving mechanism.

Collaboration After visiting the site and talking to the participants of the commercial Innovation Dock, I realized that not only all the companies have common points in their production strategy but also they see it vital to start collaborating in order to survive the changes in the market. This diagram shows a possible collaboration model between the companies of the Innovation Dock. In this particular example I tried to show the connections between different enterprises in the field of maritime. Huisman is designing and building vessels and platforms in the sea, Ampelmann is building bridges for these structures and Mr elevator is a marine elevator specialist. These companies are already connected in terms of production. In order to achieve better results and create innovative products it is important for them to share their knowledge.

Dynamic By analyzing the companies of the Innovation Dock, I realized that there are more possibilities for the collaboration models. This led me to the conclusion that there is a need for a new dynamic spatial structure for the Innovation Dock that would provide the opportunity for the participants to learn about each other and work together.

Enterprises The Innovation Dock creates a platform for inventive enterprises by offering workshop spaces for product development in the fields of building, mobility, product design, maintenance and maritime.

Exploration The first level will be used as a space for collaboration. By having a common area the companies will be able to explore the possibilities created by them collaborating.

Submarine Wharf Factory: Submarine Wharf Such aspect as the project space being a former naval base where they used to construct submarines shaped the expression of

the Ex . Co . Ex . City.

Geometry By changing the amount of the units, the length of the bridges, connecting the platforms to the unit, and the position of the platforms one can create a diversity in the geometry of the units what leads to a dynamic spatial structure.

Location: Submarine Wharf The Submarine Wharf is located in the Port of Rotterdam, Heijplaat, in the neighborhood of RDM (Research, Design and Manufacturing) Campus. The RDM focus on sustainable innovations what is crucial for the Rotterdam economy.

Mechanism The Ex . Co . Ex . City is made of different units that work together as a spatial planning mechanism.

Network Implementing a system of units for each company with the functions of office, representation, collaboration, exposition and meeting would create a new network-based work space.

Submarine Wharf Opportunity Submarine Wharf, vacant building in the neighborhood of the RDM Campus, provided the opportunity for the Innovation Dock to expand.

Platform A dynamic system of multifunctional platforms working as one mechanism has been proposed for the Submarine Wharf.

Orientation and planning of the space should merge the community around. Thus, RDM could be experienced and function as one organic unit which would shape a strong base for any future developments.

Transitions One of the most important aspects of the design in this case would be vertical and horizontal connections between the platforms. These connections would create random interactions and serve as a neutral environment. Exploring the vertical connections between the platforms would also allow using the building in a more efficient way.
