Hendersonville: Best Kept Secret for A Cool Season Getaway
Folks in the Deep South often equate a wintertime in the North Carolina mountains with skiing. While there are ski resorts in the higher elevations of Western North Carolina, the lower elevations generally experience moderate winters. That’s where Hendersonville comes in. Hendersonville is a big town or a small city – depending on how you want to view it – that has been described by a national magazine as “Asheville’s cool cousin.” Located about 20 miles south of Asheville, Hendersonville is a vibrant, artsy place with many yearround options for tourists. It all begins with a thriving downtown built around a serpentinestyle Main Street. The street meanders like a mountain river through a park-like setting of wide sidewalks, landscaped areas with sitting benches, and attractive brick planters. Main Street is alive with a nice mix of shops, boutiques, restaurants, pubs and attractions. A sun-splashed winter hike along Little River reveals a trio of well-known waterfalls, including Triple Falls, which has three distinct cascades and was featured in two Hollywood movies, “Last of the Mohicans” and “The Hunger Games.” An awesome view of four states – NC, SC, GA and TN – is available from Jump Off Rock, one of the more easily accessible grand views in North Carolina. Jump Off Rock is less than 15 minutes from Hendersonville’s Main Street and is accented by a small park leading to its namesake rock. Three short hiking trails circumnavigate the pinnacle. Hiking trails are not the only popular trails in Hendersonville. The Cheers! Trail has 16 stops for visitors to explore local wineries, breweries and craft cideries. Henderson County is NC’s top apple producing county, so the hard cider made here is truly local. When the weather turns chilly, head indoors for the Art Gallery Trail, showcasing regionally- and nationally-known artists at a dozen galleries in downtown Hendersonville and nearby Flat Rock.
