TRAVEL

Traveling with Children – Learning Activities for the Road by: Teresa Mills Traveling with children can be fun as well as very trying. Our family has been traveling with our children since the children were babies. Our children are in their middle school years now, but over the years we have come up with some fun travel activities that keep the children’s attention and teach them something in the process. While on long trips, it can be very tempting to use the portable DVD player to provide entertainment for your children, and don’t think for a minute that we don’t use that form of entertainment…. for parts of long trips…. but there are so many simple, fun games that you can play with your children that will help make the trip smoother and more enjoyable. Here are some examples of activities that we have used to make travel time smoother. One of my children’s favorite games is what my husband calls “Toss Ups”. In Toss Ups, my husband simply tosses questions up. For instance, “Who was the first president of the United States of America?” or “If I had 5 apples, and I gave 3 apples to Tom , how many apples do I have now?” Now, as you can see, the questions can be very

simple depending on your children’s ages. If you have a larger age span between children, you might toss up general questions to all, but throw in…. Now, this toss up is just for Adam… and then ask a question tailored for the younger child. This game was a huge hit with our children when they were ages two through five, but even now that they are 11 and 13, every now and then we hear – Hey Daddy – give us some toss ups…. Believe me, trying to come up with questions for smart middle-schoolers is tough!!

Lately, we have tailored the game of “Going on a trip” to our family. “Going on a trip” is a fun game where everyone in the car tells that they are going on a trip and bringing something along. That “something” has to begin with the first letter of the person’s name. You keep going along in that fashion until everyone guesses the first letter - first name connection. Now that our children are older, we have adapted that game to a pretty intricate game of logic…. For instance…. “I am going on a trip, and I am bringing an apple, a banana, and

a cat.” The next person might then say (if they know the correct connection) “I am going on a trip, and I am bringing a mop, and napkin, and an octopus.” The play continues until everyone gets the connection. In this case, it was that all of the things that I am bringing start with consecutive letters of the alphabet. The person who begins each game selects the connection. These activities are simple and fun. The idea is for the entire family to be involved and enjoy the thrill of guessing the answers. Each of these

activities can be played with just about any age group and best of all, there is no cost involved. Any piece of information can be used in the toss ups game from social studies, science, history, math, or trivia… you name it. The idea here is to have fun with your children and make travel time a little easier

Preparing Parents For A Student Trip (NAPSI)-Asking a few pertinent questions can go a long way toward making a student’s trip safe and memorable. The experts at the Student and Youth Travel Association (SYTA) suggest parents can be better informed and prepared by asking the following questions: • What is the travel provider’s experience in youth and student travel? How long has it been in business?

• How many chaperones are going on the trip? What is their background? • Is the tour provider a member of a professional travel association such as SYTA? Many consider SYTA the “Seal of Approval” for travel companies working with students and youths. Member companies must commit to consumer satisfaction and a strict code of ethics.

To learn more about student travel and get a copy of Travel Safety Tips, visit www.SYTA.org or call 1-800-509-SYTA (7982). If your child is going on a student trip, make sure you have a 24-hour contact number to use in case of emergency. ¤

FLORIDA

A Great Summer Vacation By Mary Bonus If you are looking for a great place to spend your summer vacation Florida may be the perfect place. Known as the “Sunshine State” because of its balmy, sunny weather, Florida has more theme parks, entertainment centers and sport activities than any other part in the country. Its fantasy theme parks and attractions, exciting nightlife and leisurely days on the best beaches in

the world make it an ideal place for vacations. Thousands of beautiful lakes and magnificent rivers and its 1,350 miles of coastline make it ideal for boating, sailing, fishing, diving, snorkeling and swimming. For a sportsperson, Florida is a vacation paradise. Its warm summers and mild winters make it possible to enjoy boating, camping, golfing, and water sports.

The beaches are some of the finest in the world and have been rated among the top ten each year in Dr. Beach’s America’s Best Beach list each year. They are rated among the best for beauty, facilities and ease of access. Families, couples or singles enjoy year round sunshine and soft white sand and clear water. The waters along its beaches are generally warm in comparison to the rest of the country. Beaches are a great way to get out in the sun, to play, to stroll and look for shells or to relax on a beach chair in the warm sunshine while reading a good book or just enjoying the companionship and the activity all around.

With the many miles of coast line and the hundreds of natural lakes, Florida offers much for boaters. It is ideal for power-boating, sailing, kayaking, water skiing, wake boarding, wind surfing and canoeing. Like fishing? You will find bass fishing, inshore saltwater and flats fishing and offshore saltwater fishing if you want to catch the “big ones”. You may bring your own boat or charter one. Common and popular game fish include the sailfish and blue marlin. Florida is great for camping. Outdoor enthusiasts can choose a variety of setting, from beachfront campground, to RV parks, to primitive camping. The mild climate allows

year round camping and outdoor activities. While camping, one can experience white sand beaches, peaceful forest and theme park thrills and at the end of the day, enjoy a breathtaking sunset. Florida has one of the best state park systems in the country with many great places to camp within a stone’s of the Atlantic Ocean or the Gulf of Mexico. To avoid large crowds and packed attraction, as well as expensive lodging, make plans to visit Florida during the off season which is during the months of May through October. This is also a popular time for families with school-age children. Traveling during the “off seasons” can be rewarding.

energy of Paducah in Western Kentucky. South Central Region: South Central Kentucky is best known for dozens of Kentucky lakes and its extensive cave system not found anywhere else in the world. However, up and coming cities like Bowling Green, and attractions such as the National Corvette Museum ensure there is more to this region than natural attractions alone.

North Central Region: In the North Central Region of Kentucky you’ll find one of the state’s more popular claims to fame: Horse Country. Soft rolling hills, glowing bluegrass countryside and equestrian attractions including Churchill Downs and the Kentucky Horse Park make this area one of the state’s most traveled. Eastern Region: In the Eastern Region, outdoor adventure is king. The sprawling Appalachian

Mountains, acres upon acres of national parks and miles of hiking trails and scenic routes offer a great escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Eastern Kentucky is also the home of unique culture, music and art of Appalachia, which has spawned many bluegrass, country and rock & roll artists. What are you waiting for? MARYLAND

Maryland ~ You’ve come to the right place! Maryland offers a wealth of possibilities, depending on your interests. Here are just a few… Maryland is a child-friendly state and the perfect place for a family vacation. A logical choice is a trip to Baltimore, where you can explore the acclaimed National Aquarium in Baltimore, visit the nation’s top-rated children’s zoo at The Baltimore Zoo or work at a pretend cannery at the Baltimore Museum of Industry. But there’s plenty for a family to do beyond the boundaries of Baltimore. Consider a hiking adventure in one of our state parks, enroll in a family sailing course on the Chesapeake Bay, or step back in time at any of our historic attractions. (Yes, they’re educational – but they’re also fun!) Isn’t It Romantic? The answer is yes, no matter where you go. Snuggle up in front of a roaring fire in your mountain cabin, or wake to the sound of seagulls after spending the night in a romantic retreat at Maryland’s beach resort, Ocean City. Pack a perfect picnic and set out for the beautiful views provided by green pastures or cloud-topped mountains, or hop aboard a historic sailboat and enjoy a sunset cruise for two. And if the mood should strike, you can even stick around and have your wedding here. Maryland is home to the historic old chapel that hosted the weddings

of Babe Ruth, Tiny Tim and Debbie Reynolds. Go Outside and Play. How many times did your parents tell you to “go outside and play?” Here in Maryland, we also urge you to get outdoors to experience some of Maryland’s natural wonders. Step into a sea kayak and paddle through the marsh grasses of the lower Chesapeake Bay. Hop on a mountain bike and pedal through pristine forest trails in Western Maryland. Cast a line for blue marlin, brook trout, smallmouth bass or striped bass (known as “rockfish” to the locals) in bodies of water all around the state. Pitch a tent, climb a rock, hunt for fossils or prowl for owls on a night hike. We promise great adventures in our great outdoors. Take the Road Less Traveled. Poet Robert Frost took the less-worn path. You’ll be glad that you did, too, on any of Maryland’s 31 designated scenic byways. Forego the freeway and follow the colorful black-eyed Susan signs (the Susan is our state flower) through waterfront villages, past historic monuments, down old Main streets and beside pristine forest glades. These carefully mapped routes, some with “sidetracks” better explored without a car, encourage a leisurely pace as you journey around Maryland.

Retreat to a bygone era on Maryland’s Civil War Trails. Brother fought brother in the cornfields around Sharpsburg, a battle that afterwards turned whole towns into makeshift hospitals. Armies clad in blue and gray skirmished through Maryland’s countryside on their way to an epic battle at Gettysburg. A wounded assassin escaped Washington, D.C. into the Southern Maryland countryside in search of a doctor named Mudd. The Civil War soldiers, spies and villains didn’t have signposts to point the way, but today’s visitors can follow colorful bugle “trailblazer” signs of Maryland’s Civil War Trails. The bugles lead to waysides where interpretive markers tell both military and anecdotal accounts of war and its effects on the people of Maryland. No matter what the interest, you’re sure to find a wealth of information by logging on to www.visitmaryland.org.

Fall in Love with Caroline County Located on the Chesapeake Peninsula between the Choptank River and the historic Mason-Dixon Line, Caroline County is the perfect destination for heritage enthusiasts and outdoor adventurers. Here you’ll find a rural and relaxing lifestyle where you can enjoy a wealth of unique heritage experiences, including the Museum of Rural Life, the Choptank River Heritage Center, the Federalsburg Museum and the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Byway.

For those seeking an adventure in the great outdoors, Caroline County offers a 400-acre native garden and nature preserve, eleven miles of pristine waterways, gently curving countryside perfect for cycling, two state parks, hang gliding, Alpaca and Clydesdale farms, hunting lodges and more. Take a Sunday drive through picturesque farmland or visit one of the quaint towns along the way. Whatever your passion, come spend a weekend with Caroline. www.tourcaroline.com ¤

The Scenic Trails of Tennessee The Natchez Trace Parkway marks one segment of North America’s oldest public road, funneling travelers, from prehistory to modern times, from the Gulf of Mexico to the shores of the Great Lakes. The Natchez Trace Parkway is a National Scenic Byway and runs from Nashville to Natchez, Miss. It was originally called the Path of Peace by the Chickasaw Indians because their warriors could pass rivals on the pathway without bloodshed. The Great River Road through Tennessee traverses highways 78, 181, 88 and 51 along the Mississippi in the west. This scenic trail offers historic and recreational beauty as well as many off-the-beaten-path adventures. The Cherohala Skyway in East Tennessee is designated as a National Scenic Byway. Route 411 winds upwards through the Cherokee National Forest and after 16 miles, levels out at 5,000 feet, almost a mile above sea level. The entire 43-mile stretch from Tellico Plains offers glimpses of the Tellico River, Tennessee Valley and ridgeline after ridgeline of tree-covered mountains.
