Hendersonville: NC’s Newest Wine Region The popular mountain getaway of Hendersonville, North Carolina — long known for its apple orchards and charming downtown — has emerged as a hot spot for wine enthusiasts. The surrounding Blue Ridge Mountain countryside provides a peaceful oasis to sip quality wines while taking in long-range views. Hendersonville’s wine region recently received federal designation as the Crest of the Blue Ridge American Viticultural Area, or AVA. Only regions with distinctive soil, climate and elevation — such as Napa Valley and Sonoma — earn this designation. Warm days and cool nights during the growing season, along with the right soil and water quality, produce high quality grapes. Conditions in this plateau of the Blue Ridge near Asheville are ideal for several varietals of European

vinifera and French-American grapes. The county’s rolling vineyards produce wines from such grapes as Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Riesling and Vidal Blanc. Sweeter wines from native muscadine and scuppernong grapes are also found here, as well as an occasional fruit wine made from apples, blueberries or peaches. “For visitors, the AVA designation lets them know we are serious about growing grapes in this region, and they can expect a higher-quality wine and a better product,” says Sandra Oates, owner of Burntshirt Vineyards. Burntshirt is one of three wineries located in the Crest of the Blue Ridge AVA. The estate-grown winery operates 30 acres of vineyards at two sites on opposite sides of the Eastern Continental Divide.

Nearby Saint Paul Mountain Vineyards produces award-winning wines from land that has been in the same family for nine generations, while Point Lookout Vineyards offers panoramic views from an open-air tasting room at nearly 3,000 feet elevation. All three wineries are part of Hendersonville’s Cheers! Trail. For info, visit www.CheersTrail.org or call (800) 828-4244 to request a trail map or visitors guide. ¤

Private and state resorts on both lakes provide every kind of vacation option, and there are plenty of attractions for days off the water. Western Kentucky is rich in music history. The father of bluegrass music, Bill Monroe, was born in Rosine in Ohio County; while W.C. Handy, the father of the blues, called Henderson home for 10 years. John Prine, Merle Travis and the Everly Brothers have Muhlenberg County ties; Boots Randolph was born in Trigg county. The Bluegrass Hall of

SOUTH CAROLINA

South Carolina Coast Features 200 Miles of Sun and Surf

A mix of easy public access, private retreats and natural preserves highlights the 200 miles of Atlantic Ocean coastline that South Carolina calls its own. For generations, beach trips to millions of Americans and Canadians has meant an easy drive to Myrtle Beach and later, Hilton Head, while expanded air travel has added more international travelers in recent years. Reliable, decent weather year-round and a burgeoning menu of attractions and amenities continue to drive that growth in popularity. Starting from the north, Myrtle Beach anchors the 60-mile crescent of shoreline known as the Grand Strand. Characterized by long, sweeping stretches of sand and surf, the Strand offers both bustling and

less-boisterous choices for plopping that plastic chaise lounge and propping the umbrella. In Myrtle Beach proper, hotels old and new, restaurants and shops line the beach, with public access points interspersed. Then there are the quiet ocean-side beach communities such as Cherry Grove, Atlantic Beach (considered perhaps the nation’s first predominantly African American beach town), Garden City and “elegantly shabby” Pawleys Island. Each offers varying degrees of public beach access and wide choices of hotel, cottage and condo rentals, as well as package deals with many of the more than 100 golf courses on the Strand. Cozy Myrtle Beach and expansive Huntington Beach state parks also offer beach

access, camping, environmental education programs and more. Much of the coast is protected wildlife refuges until the Charleston area, itself a world-class destination for lovers of history and architecture but also home to popular beach destinations such as Wild Dunes Resort and the Isle of Palms to the north of town and Folly Beach and its popular public beach just to the south. Next up going south is storied Edisto Island. Live oaks draped with Spanish moss overhang the narrow highway across the big island to Edisto Beach, long beloved for its great shelling. The park also has a robust environmental education center, camping and cabins. Then there’s the Beaufort area.

The big park has four miles of beach, cabins and thousands of acres of maritime forest and marsh for exploring. It even has a historic, 100foot lighthouse. At the south end of South Carolina’s coast is Hilton Head, a golf and tennis haven. Hilton Head is world famous for its plantation resorts, which combine beachfront

dining, pools and cabanas with tennis, a range of accommodations and public and private golf. There are literally thousands of hotel rooms, condos, campsites and other accommodations along the South Carolina coast, as well as a myriad of dining, entertainment and educational options to help spice up the trip. -Marc Rapport

Welcome to Conway – One of South Carolina’s Oldest Towns Conway boasts some of the best restaurants, stores and boutiques in the area. Visitors can take in a show at the downtown theatre, walk around to shop and eat or leisurely stroll the Riverwalk to take in the scenery. Conway is one of the oldest towns in South Carolina, founded in 1732.

Conway’s past has been proudly preserved. A visit to the Horry County Museum or the LW Paul Living History Farm will find exhibits of life from a bygone era. The Conway Historical Trail identifies 39 historic, beautiful buildings and homes. Many of these dwellings are home to third or fourth

generation family members who are tireless in caring for them. Conway is a delightful surprise and still not yet well-known by mass tourism. That will change, but until then, take advantage of all it has to offer. There truly is something for everyone! ¤

Where Families Come to Play: Edisto Beach Vacation Rentals Just south of Charleston is South Carolina’s best kept secret, Edisto Beach one of the last non-commercial Sea Islands on the Coast. Since 1932, Brookgreen, a 9,127-acre botanical and sculpture garden, has drawn visitors from around the world. It boasts one of the most significant collection of figurative sculptures in a beautiful outdoor setting and the only accredited zoo on the South Carolina

coast. In 2020, Brookgreen will welcome renowned British artist Bruce Munro’s exhibition, “Bruce Munro at Brookgreen: Southern Light,” consisting of thousands of LED and fiber-optic lights. The New York Times has hailed Munro’s work as a “must-see.” Come visit the Hammock Coast and rediscover life with no schedules. The only itinerary you may need is a tide chart! ¤
