Explore Pennsylvania One of the original 13 colonies to be settled in the United States, Pennsylvania was founded by an English Quaker, William Penn, in the 17th Century: hence the name of the state which literally means Penn’s Woods’. There are certainly woods in Pennsylvania, but a great deal more in this diverse state, which spans more than 300 miles from Delaware Bay to the Great Lakes.

Over 83,000 miles of river and streams and 17 million acres of forest provide a lifetime of opportunity. Outdoors enthusiasts will enjoy Pennsylvania’s whitewater rafting, skydiving, hiking, rock climbing, canoeing, mountain biking and more. Harrisburg, the state capital, has its exceptionally handsome capitol building and impressive State Museum, covering Pennsylvania’s

300-year history, and the National Civil War Museum which focuses on the human side of the conflict. Pennsylvania is the most historically significant state in the nation, particularly its main population hub, the eastern seaboard city of Philadelphia, where America’s founding fathers shaped the nation after Independence. The Liberty Bell seldom tolls today, but it draws

millions of visitors annually to the city’s Historic Independence National Park. The other main metropolis is Pittsburgh on the western side of the state, where the smokebelching steel mills of the early 20th century have given way to urban redevelopment highlighting the region’s natural beauty. Pennsylvania, bordered by six other states (New York, New Jersey,

Delaware, Maryland, West Virginia and Ohio), offers everything from honeymoon retreats, family style resorts, ski-lodges, an eclectic mix of architecture, scrumptious home-style fare, historic treasures, panoramic cityscapes, pastoral pleasure, artists’ colonies and country inns. Whatever visitors want in Pennsylvania, they are bound to find it. Continued next page

ALABAMA

Uncover a Family Friendly Spring Break along Alabama’s Gulf Coast Why are college coeds the only ones who get a spring break? Blast to the past (minus the 80s hair and leg warmers) with a rejuvenating spring vacation to the Alabama Gulf Coast. Bypass the wild college destinations for the 32 miles of family friendly shores in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, Alabama. This southernmost tip of Alabama is conveniently located six interstate hours from Atlanta and attracts nearly 4.7 million

visitors annually with its easy-going coastal atmosphere that offers plenty to see and do. With wide, powdery soft beaches, many beach bums in training perfect the art of doing nothing while others take the more active approach of parasailing, beach volleyball, football or a friendly game of Frisbee. Regardless of the choice, the area offers a variety of beaches, ranging from action-packed to quiet seclusion. Parents with little ones or the sometimes-grumpy teenager flock to the local attractions, such

as the water and amusement parks, miniature golf or even the internationally known zoo, which was featured on the Animal Planet. History buffs find a rich collection of historic sites and charming local museums. Meanwhile, nature lovers can take a guided tour through the state park or wander through the refuge’s serene trails. Also, visitors cannot leave Pleasure Island without at least one maiden voyage on the area’s waterways, whether it’s landing the first catch aboard a charter boat or setting sail on a nature or dolphin watching cruise.

Plus, the adults are not left out of the fun as the area offers signature golf courses and a shopping basket full of lifestyle centers and charming beachside boutiques. Spring visitors might wish to party with an outdoor concert as The Wharf presents Jimmy Buffett and the Coral Reefers (April 23) and Kenny Chesney (April 27). Fall in love with a hotrod at the Bama Coast Cruise (April 2527). Meanwhile, birds of a feather flock to the annual spring banding at Fort Morgan (April), or take a guided tour at the refuge (multiple dates).

Finally, kick off the summer season at the Hangout Music Festival, May 17-19. Located directly on the sand, enjoy three days of nonstop concerts performed on multiple full-size stages just steps from the Gulf. Welcome to Dauphin Island AL! Come and enjoy our little piece of paradise, dip your toes in the Gulf of Mexico waters, get sand between your toes and just RELAX on Dauphin Island AL. Come stroll some of our beaches, charter a boat to fish or to cruise, dine in our special eateries and visit gift shops and boutiques for that special item or gift. In our busy world, we plan for tomorrow, but can’t live it until it arrives. We invite you to come enjoy Dauphin Island – TODAY.

Standing guard between Mobile Bay and the Gulf of Mexico, Dauphin Island is a true barrier island – complete with dunes, maritime forests, salt marshes, tidal flats and two freshwater lakes. Named “barrier” for their role in protection of the mainland from nature’s fury of storm waves, barrier islands also prevent the inflow of salt water from the Gulf into the bays and sounds by forming a physical barrier. This process is

essential to maintaining the nursery characteristics of the estuarine ecosystem. Entry to the island is made by crossing a three-mile long high-rise bridge, which was opened in July 1982 after the original drawbridge was destroyed by Hurricane Frederic in 1979. An automobile ferry from the eastern shore also offers an entry point on the eastern end of the island. The island is approximately

14 miles long and 1 3/4 miles wide at the widest point. The eastern six miles are inhabited while the western 8 miles are undeveloped and privately owned. It is estimated that 1300 permanent residents call Dauphin Island home. The number of residents soars during vacation and holiday times. The entire island has been designated as a bird sanctuary and thousands of visitors come to experience the annual migrations.

4-Day 400 Mile Sale Across Kentucky Every year since 2004, on the first weekend in June, the 4-Day 400 Mile Sale across Kentucky takes place. The route starts just south of Paducah and follows historic Hwy 68 (a state scenic byway) to Maysville through 60 communities. This year, the Sale is anticipated to be bigger than ever with more yard sales setting up all along the route! Just check out the website 400mile.com and click on “Yard Sale Locations” for list of sales registered thus far with more being added daily.

Each yard sale listing includes some of the featured items each yard saler or shop will be selling. If you happen to be a person who collects salt shakers or cookie tins; or if you are looking specifically for tools, collectibles or antiques; or if you are into retro furniture, check out our 400mile.com website and you just might find the perfect place to start your shopping. The 400 Mile Sale was started 13 years ago as an economic boost to rural communities by encouraging people to get off the interstates and parkways and rediscover the small towns. The route takes one through communities such as Sharpe, Draffenville, Fairview, Elkton, Auburn,

Wisdom, Edmonton, Gravel Switch, Perryville, Wilmore, and Mayslick and larger communities such as Benton, Cadiz, Hopkinsville, Bowling Green, Campbellsville, Lebanon, Harrodsburg and Paris. Yard sales, food vendors, and crafters will be set up in every community and at many of the homes on or near Hwy 68. Antique shops and specialty stores all along the way will be having side walk sales and discount specials. People from all over plan their vacations each year around the 400 Mile Sale. Some come to see what treasures they can find. Others just enjoy traveling this scenic route, enjoying Kentucky’s beautiful landscape and historic communities

and meeting all the friendly folks along the way. In 2015, yard sale shoppers came from 34 states and 7 counties including Taiwan, Canada, Korea, Switzerland, Germany and Japan and spent over $2.3 million dollars at yard sales and shops during the 4-day sale across Kentucky! Be sure to “like us” on FACEBOOK at “400 Mile Sale” where people will be posting items they have for sale as well as treasures they find along the way! SC Coast Features Miles of Sun and Surf A mix of easy public access, private retreats and natural preserves highlights the 200 miles of Atlantic Ocean coastline that South Carolina calls its own. For generations, beach trips to millions of Americans and Canadians has meant an easy drive to Myrtle Beach and later, Hilton Head, while expanded air travel has added more international travelers in recent years. Reliable, decent weather year-round and a burgeoning menu of attractions and amenities continue to drive that growth in popularity. Starting from the north, Myrtle Beach anchors the 60-mile crescent of shoreline known as the Grand Strand. Characterized by long, sweeping stretches of sand and surf,

the Strand offers both bustling and less-boisterous choices for plopping that plastic chaise lounge and propping the umbrella. In Myrtle Beach proper, hotels old and new, restaurants and shops line the beach, with public access points interspersed. Then there are the quiet ocean-side beach communities such as Cherry Grove, Atlantic Beach (considered perhaps the nation’s first predominantly African American beach town), Garden City and “elegantly shabby” Pawleys Island. Each offers varying degrees of public beach access and wide choices of hotel, cottage and condo rentals, as well as package deals with many of the more than 100 golf courses on the Strand. Cozy Myrtle

Beach and expansive Huntington Beach state parks also offer beach access, camping, environmental education programs and more. Much of the coast is protected wildlife refuges until the Charleston area, itself a world-class destination for lovers of history and architecture but also home to popular beach destinations such as Wild Dunes Resort and the Isle of Palms to the north of town and Folly Beach and its popular public beach just to the south. Next up going south is storied Edisto Island. Live oaks draped with Spanish moss overhang the narrow highway across the big island to Edisto Beach, long beloved for its great shelling. The park also has

sixty miles of white sandy beaches that stretch as far as the eye can see. Thoughtful water venues include a heated indoor pool and lazy river. The large oceanfront pool extends to a beautiful grassy lawn, ideal for watching the sun rise and set over the Atlantic Ocean. There are indoor and outdoor children’s water venues.

Grand Atlantic features conveniences such as an onsite restaurant, store and fitness room. There is a covered, attached parking garage. Grand Atlantic Resort Myrtle Beach, SC 800-852-7032 www.grandatlanticresortcom ¤

a robust environmental education center, camping and cabins. Then there’s the Beaufort area. The big park has four miles of beach, cabins and thousands of acres of maritime forest and marsh for exploring. It even has a historic, 100foot lighthouse. At the south end of South Carolina’s coast is Hilton Head, a golf and tennis haven. Hilton Head is world famous for its plantation resorts, which combine beachfront

dining, pools and cabanas with tennis, a range of accommodations and public and private golf.
