NORTH CAROLINA

North Carolina – Perfection Year-Round

The sun wakes in the eastern waves of the Atlantic Ocean, warms the sparkling sands and travels west over the lakes and rivers of the Piedmont region to the rocky western expanse. Melting into the wooded peaks and ascending majesty of the Appalachian and Great Smoky Mountains, the sunsets afford heavenly views from the worldrenowned Blue Ridge Parkway, which winds its way through the green mountain ranges of North Carolina. Hikers and camping enthusiasts never have to look far for contentment in the wooded regions of North Carolina. Beautiful hardwood forests cover two thirds of the mountainous landscape and boast having over 120 species of trees. One peak, Mount Mitchell, reaches 6,684 feet into the sky, making it the tallest peak in the state and eastern US. North Carolina’s Piedmont region rolls the foothills out into green meadows and prairies, stretching from the western mountain regions to the eastern shore. Some areas

gather more than 30 inches of snow annually, making Piedmont a prime location for year-round recreation. Regional summers see low humidity and cool shady hideaways never lacking. Fishing, hiking, and picnicking maintain great popularity for summer adventurers, and skiing, snowboarding, and sledding is just around the corner with the winter snows! Southern Gulf Stream currents brush against the North Carolina coast and warm the elegant beaches

and rolling sand dunes. Jockey’s Ridge, a magnificent sand dune, is the highest along the eastern coast, decidedly one of the most romantic look outs onto the blue ocean. Local wetlands also offer beautiful picnicking spots and a great chance to view North Carolina’s diverse wildlife. Modern resorts and magnificent hotels border the shoreline for some of the greatest views in the state. Most famous for its Outer Banks, the 130 miles of North Carolina

coast overreaches every vacationer’s dream. Secluded barrier islands present the perfect locations for shelling or just a quite day on the beach and water sports are always close at hand. Surfing, parasailing, and jet skiing are just a few of all the exciting opportunities. Museums, theme parks, and aquariums make the perfect day in town, and souvenir shops garland nearly every corner. Spas and cruises are always available for the most lavish retreats, but really, North Carolina itself is built

on the natural luxuries of eastern United States. Festivals and regional celebrations add even more excitement to the year in all regions of the beautiful North Carolina. So fill your photo albums with the memories of a lifetime, live your fantasies, and succumb to the great North Carolina expanses, where perfection is year-round. ¤

Hendersonville: A Great Place to Stay in the NC Mountains

When it comes to vacations, half the fun is picking the right place to stay. With that in mind, travelers to the cool mountains of Hendersonville, North Carolina, have quite a selection. This vibrant, artsy Blue Ridge town offers everything from rustic resorts to luxury cabins, from national-brand hotels to mom-and-pop motels, from charming inns to cozy bedand-breakfasts. The Mountain Inns boast two locations, one in Flat Rock and the other near the airport for convenience. For a variety of lodging

options, check out the Mill House Lodge featuring suites, a cottage and more! Last year alone the town added four franchise hotels bringing more than 500 new rooms. “There’s something for everyone,” says Beth Carden, Henderson County tourism director. “I think the cabins and bed-and-breakfast inns particularly provide that mountain vacation experience that people desire.” “We also offer a room availability program on our website,” Carden

adds. “It puts visitors in touch with accommodations that have availability during their desired travel time.” Hendersonville and its surrounding towns have been able to assemble such an inventory of lodging options because the region has done hospitality right for decades. Since the mid-1900s, the area has drawn visitors with such iconic attractions as the Carl Sandburg Home, Flat Rock Playhouse, DuPont State

Recreational Forest, Biltmore Estate and the Blue Ridge Parkway. Even Hendersonville’s Main Street is an attraction with its curvilinear design, flowering brick planters and landscaped sidewalks dotted with park bench seating areas. The downtown is home to an eclectic blend of shops, boutiques, museums and children’s attractions, along with 25 independent restaurants and a nice mix of pubs and tasting rooms. The travel professionals in Hendersonville realize that many

SOUTH CAROLINA

SC’s Hammock Coast – Vacation Destination with Southern Charm

Located between Myrtle Beach and Charleston. For years, Georgetown County, known as South Carolina’s Hammock Coast, has quietly given beach lovers, golfers, families, outdoor enthusiasts and history buffs a vacation destination infused with Southern charm and natural beauty. Made up of the communities of Pawleys Island, Murrells Inlet, Garden City, Litchfield Beach, Georgetown and Andrews, each area has its own distinct personality, which combined, form the unique attraction of this area. You won’t have trouble claiming your spot on our beaches. Garden City, Litchfield and Pawleys Island all have spacious beaches and pristine salt marshes for soaking up the sun, exploring or catching some fish and blue crabs for dinner. Award winning golf, with more than 13 courses within a 15-minute drive, dots our area. Many are built on former rice plantations giving a graciously Southern golf experience. Three of Golf Magazines’ “Top 100 You Can Play” are here and Pawleys Island was named one of the top ten “Golf Islands” in the world by Links Magazine. 6

Pawleys Island, the oldest Seaside Resort in America, continues to be a great place to enjoy a quiet, laid-back vacation. As the birthplace of the rope hammock, relaxation has a long history here. The actual island has no commercial development; however, just over the short causeway, there are first class restaurants and boutique shopping for when (if!) you want a break from relaxing on the beach or the porch. Known as the Seafood Capital of South Carolina, Murrells Inlet is a fishing village on a protected inlet, and boasts some of the best seafood in the entire South! The Murrells Inlet Marshwalk is a boardwalk on the banks of the Inlet, and allows visitors to truly experience the salt-marsh ecosystem along with restaurants, shops, parasailing, jet skiing and fishing excursions. Between Murrells Inlet and Litchfield Beach, you will discover Brookgreen Gardens and Huntington Beach State Park. Huntington Beach State Park, recognized as one of the top birding spots in North America, also offers camping and access to a pristine undeveloped beach. Brookgreen Gardens houses the most

significant collection of figurative sculpture in a beautiful outdoor setting and the only accredited zoo on the coast of SC. For the history buff, Georgetown is South Carolina’s third oldest city, founded in 1729. It is also the probable site of the first European settlement in North America in 1526. It boasts a charming downtown historic district with restaurants and boutique shopping along the Harborwalk. Local tour companies provide a glimpse into the history of the area by land and by river. Andrews, located 18 miles inland from Georgetown, offers the perfect place to experience the natural world. From sporting clays to kayaking along the winding Black River, Andrews is an outdoor enthusiast’s dream. For the foodie, you won’t have any trouble finding an amazing meal on the Hammock Coast, our area is dotted with great little restaurants, staffed by award winning chefs. Fresh seafood, fresh produce and wonderful culinary talent equal many “blog-worthy” meals.

Fishing, hunting and outdoor recreation are plentiful. With five rivers coming together to meet the ocean, and vast undeveloped land holdings, wildlife is plentiful. A number of guides and outfitters are available to get you out on the water in a boat, kayak, paddleboard or surfboard.

Come visit the Hammock Coast and rediscover life with no schedules, rediscover your family, rediscover nature and rediscover yourself. The only itinerary you need is a tide chart! Hammock Coast, SC Georgetown, SC 29440 866.570.4238 www.HammockCoastSC.com ¤
