Dauphin Island – Where Life Moves At Its Own Leisurely Pace By Mary Bonus Planning a family vacation? Then Dauphin Island is the place to go. Situated between Mobile Bay and the Gulf of Mexico, it is perfect for a laid-back family getaway. Enjoy the sugar-white, clean, soft, sandy beaches, swimming, shelling and fishing. The accommodations are great and pets are welcome. The entire island has been designated as a bird sanctuary and thousands of visitors come to experience the annual migrations. “Wild Bird Magazine” selected Dauphin Island as one of the top four locations in North America for viewing spring migration. Egrets and herons can be seen in the marshes and trees and occasionally an alligator might be spotted sunning on the bank in late afternoon. Although it is well known for songbirds and hummingbirds, butterflies also make these trips of thousands of miles. The Dauphin Island Audubon Bird Sanctuary consists of all types of natural habitats and miles of beautiful, lush and tranquil hiking
trails that take you out to white sandy beaches. The Dauphin Island Sea Lab, Alabama’s marine research facility, is a must place to see when visiting the island. There are many excellent exhibits and great hands-on displays for both children and adults. The exhibits are not overwhelming in size or detail, making it easy for family groups of many ages to explore the beauty and the scientific wonders of the island. The historic Fort Gains is another interesting site to visit. It was a Confederate fort during the Civil War. You can walk through where the solders ate and slept. The thick concrete walls that surround the fort are still standing strong. Each corner of the five-sided fort is protected with a cannon and has a narrow, spiral stair passageway leading to tunnels that allow access to the courtyard. Children love to explore some of these dark, mysterious areas. The original blacksmith shop is operational and used in demonstrations.
Dauphin Island has many beautiful parks, including the Indian Shell Mound Park. Giant moss covered oak trees are found throughout the park, one estimated by botanists to be about 800 years old. This site was visited by Native American Indians for centuries. The oyster shell mound was formed by the accumulation of debris from meals of roasted oysters, fish and other delicacies left by the early Native Americans. If you like camping out for a quiet, relaxing time outdoors, Dauphin Island camping is for you. The private path to the beach goes through a wooded area. There are charter boats, excursion boats and a 850 feet fishing pier where rods can be rented, and after a full day of fishing, the campsite provides a fish-cleaning table. Dauphin Island “Where there are no traffic lights and life moves at its own leisurely pace”. Create a memorable vacation for you and your family... ¤
Family Vacations Like They Used To Be Dauphin Island is historical – the Battle of Mobile Bay was fought here and Fort Gaines is available for all to view, but it is not all about history. We have a family friendly island, beaches, no high rises, little traffic, and are a true small town located on an idyllic island easily reached by bridge and by ferry. With the prehistoric Indian Shell Mounds and Audubon Bird Sanctuary, we have attractions for history buffs, birders, and people who just want to chill on white sandy
beaches, plus helpful island residents who will attempt to provide any information and suggestions for what vacationers may desire. There is charter fishing – search for flounder, bull reds and sport fish in the Gulf of Mexico or Mobile Bay, but also enjoy great fishing from the beach, kayaks, parasailing and jet skis for reasonable rental fees. Enjoy sweet Alabama Wild Shrimp, crab, homemade breads and southern dishes, and more at restaurants that cater to various types of cuisines. Condos, rental
homes, B & Bs, two scenic campgrounds and a family-style motel are affordable for any budget at any time of year and the shopping is sensational. Our beautiful sunsets and sunrises contribute to Dauphin Island being a MUST location providing a low-key and relaxing vacation – Truly, “Family Vacations like they used to be!” Call 877-532-8744 or visit www.dauphinislandchamber.com for information. ¤

Known as the “Sunshine State” because of its balmy, sunny weather, Florida has more theme parks, entertainment centers and sport
activities than any other part in the country. Its fantasy theme parks and attractions, exciting nightlife and leisurely days on the best beaches in the world make it an ideal place for vacations. Thousands of beautiful lakes and magnificent rivers and its 1,350 miles of coastline make it ideal
for boating, sailing, fishing, diving, snorkeling and swimming. For a sportsperson, Florida is a vacation paradise. Its warm summers and mild winters make it possible to enjoy boating, camping, golfing, and water sports. The beaches are some of the finest in the world and have been rated among the top ten each year in Dr. Beach’s America’s Best Beach list each year. They are rated among the best for beauty, facilities and ease of access. Families, couples or singles enjoy year round sunshine and soft white sand and clear water. The waters along its beaches are generally warm in comparison to the rest of the country. Beaches are a great way to get out in the sun, to play, to stroll and look for shells or to relax on a beach chair in the warm sunshine while reading a good book or just enjoying the companionship and the activity all around. With the many miles of coast line and the hundreds of natural lakes,

Florida offers much for boaters. It is ideal for power-boating, sailing, kayaking, water skiing, wake boarding, wind surfing and canoeing. Like fishing? You will find bass fishing, inshore saltwater and flats fishing and offshore saltwater fishing if you want to catch the “big ones”. You may bring your own boat or charter one. Common and popular game fish include the sailfish and blue marlin. Florida is great for camping. Outdoor enthusiasts can choose a variety of setting, from beachfront campground, to RV parks, to primitive camping. The mild climate allows year round camping and outdoor activities. While camping, one can experience white sand beaches, peaceful forest and theme park thrills and at the end of the day, enjoy a breathtaking sunset. Florida has one
of the best state park systems in the country with many great places to camp within a stone’s of the Atlantic Ocean or the Gulf of Mexico. Florida is the “golf capital of the world”. The year round sun attracts hundreds of thousands of golfers each year. There are over 1,000 public, private and semiprivate courses in which numerous cheap golf courses are also available. No matter what your golfing ability or budget, courses are accessible to suit all needs. To avoid large crowds and packed attraction, as well as expensive lodging, make plans to visit Florida during the off season which is during the months of May through October. This is also a popular time for families with school-age children. Traveling during the “off seasons” can be rewarding.

South Carolina coast features 200 miles of sun and surf A mix of easy public access, private retreats and natural preserves highlights the 200 miles of Atlantic Ocean coastline that South Carolina calls its own. For generations, beach trips to millions of Americans and Canadians has meant an easy drive to Myrtle Beach and later, Hilton Head, while expanded air travel has added more
international travelers in recent years. Reliable, decent weather year-round and a burgeoning menu of attractions and amenities continue to drive that growth in popularity. Starting from the north, Myrtle Beach anchors the 60-mile crescent of shoreline known as the Grand Strand. Characterized by long, sweeping stretches of sand and surf,
the Strand offers both bustling and less-boisterous choices for plopping that plastic chaise lounge and propping the umbrella. In Myrtle Beach proper, hotels old and new, restaurants and shops line the beach, with public access points interspersed. Then there are the quiet ocean-side beach communities such as Cherry Grove, Atlantic Beach (considered perhaps the nation’s first predominantly African American beach town), Garden City and “elegantly shabby” Pawleys Island. Each offers varying degrees of public beach access and wide choices of hotel, cottage and condo rentals, as well as package deals with many of the more than 100 golf courses on the Strand. Cozy Myrtle Beach and expansive Huntington
Beach state parks also offer beach access, camping, environmental education programs and more. Much of the coast is protected wildlife refuges until the Charleston area, itself a world-class destination for lovers of history and architecture but also home to popular beach destinations such as Wild Dunes Resort and the Isle of Palms to the north of town and Folly Beach and its popular public beach just to the south. Next up going south is storied Edisto Island. Live oaks draped with Spanish moss overhang the narrow highway across the big island to Edisto Beach, long beloved for its great shelling. The park also has a robust environmental education center, camping and cabins.
Then there’s the Beaufort area. The big park has four miles of beach, cabins and thousands of acres of maritime forest and marsh for exploring. It even has a historic, 100-foot lighthouse. At the south end of South Carolina’s coast is Hilton Head, a golf and tennis haven. Hilton Head is world famous for its plantation resorts, which combine beachfront dining, pools and cabanas with tennis, a range of accommodations and public and private golf. There are literally thousands of hotel rooms, condos, campsites and other accommodations along the South Carolina coast, as well as a myriad of dining, entertainment and educational options to help spice up the trip. -Marc Rapport

PENNSYLVANIA
Experiences for Pennsylvania Travelers From a scenic overlook at one of the nation’s tallest and longest bridges to entertainment complexes and a festival for Jeep lovers, there are attractions for every taste throughout Pennsylvania. The Kinzua Bridge, once the world’s highest and longest railroad viaduct, became a scenic pedestrian walkway in mid-2011. It was first built in 1882, but 11 of its 20 towers were toppled by a tornado in 2003. Visitors are now able to walk on part of the bridge and view the Kinzua Gorge from a height of more than 300 feet. The bridge is located in Kinzua Bridge State Park, located in the popular PA Wilds region. The PA Wilds is known for its unsurpassed natural beauty and charming towns awash in history, and also features the largest elk herd in the Northeast. Learn more at www.pawilds.com. The Bantam Jeep Heritage Festival is revving things up for the annual event celebrating Butler, Pa. as the birthplace of the father of all Jeeps. The Festival will jump start everyone’s summer with an even more family-friendly event when it’s held June 14-16, 2013, Father’s Day
weekend. It will also feature a new venue, Coopers Lake Campground in Slippery Rock, that offers Jeep owners longer and more challenging trails, room for future Festival growth and a full-service campground. The Festival’s main activities including Jeep Invasion, Jeep Playground, trail rides, show ‘n shine, vendors and more will now be featured on Friday and Saturday, June 14 and 15. Learn more at www.bantamjeepfestival.com. The ArtsQuest Center at SteelStacks in Bethlehem is a 65,000-square-foot, multi-use performing arts center, which features live music, independent and scientific films, festivals and community celebrations year-round. ArtsQuest is a product of the organizers of Musicfest, Christkindlmarkt and PeepFest. Check out all there is to do there by clicking www.artsquest.org. A former silk mill in Columbia, Lancaster County, became a destination for fans of Turkey Hill Dairy’s frozen desserts and drinks. The Turkey Hill Experience interactive center highlights the ice
cream making process, the history of the dairy, the Lancaster County region and its unique heritage and culture. Plan for your experience at www.turkeyhillexperience.com. Stage AE, an indoor/outdoor concert complex next to Pittsburgh’s Heinz Field, hosts more than 100 events annually with outdoor seating for 5,500 and indoor concerts for 2,400. The National Museum of American Jewish History in Philadelphia features exhibits, rare artifacts and interactive displays that tell the story of American Jews through every phase of the nation’s history. This addition to Independence Mall features a striking glass façade and its 100,000-square-foot museum offers three floors of core exhibition space,
a floor of changing exhibits, and the Only in America® Gallery/Hall of Fame, which illustrates the extraordinary accomplishments of American Jews. A number of resources are available, as well, at the museum’s website: www.nmajh.org. In April 2011, the U.S. Army Heritage and Education Center in Carlisle opened a 37,000-square-foot visitor and education center that contains an exhibit and interpretive gallery, café, and museum store. The opening exhibit was dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. The center will be next to the Army Heritage Trail, which features interactive military exhibits, Civil War winter cabins, and a WWI-era trench system. Learn more at www.armyheritage.org.
The Erie Art Museum is housed in a LEED-certified space that combines 10,500 square feet of new construction with 15,000 square feet of renovated space in downtown Erie. The addition connects five historic buildings, triples gallery space and allows the museum’s entire permanent collection of more than 6,000 objects to be on display; some for the first time. Visit www.erieartmuseum.org to see the new space and what is on display for art lovers. Welcome to Pennsylvania Pennsylvania’s rich cultural diversity and their role in American History dates back more than 300 years, when the Quaker William Penn established “Penn’s Woods” as a haven for the oppressed. Settlers came here with a variety of ethnic backgrounds, savored their new freedoms and then put their lives on the line to preserve them. Pennsylvania became known as the “Keystone State” due to their key
location in the center of the original 13 colonies. Therefore, it is not surprising that many of the events that formed the fabric of our nation happened right in Pennsylvania. The Commonwealth has a history that is rich in new beginnings – from the signing of the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia to the rebirth of our nation on the Civil War battlefield at Gettysburg, to the important technological
advancements that got their start during the Industrial Revolution. Come to Pennsylvania . . . there is something for everyone . . . and then some!

In the low-lying areas and valleys, including the western regions of the state and the Eastern Panhandle, winters are mild and summers are warm but pleasant. In the central portions of the state and the more mountainous areas, including the Mountain Highlands, winters are colder, with a greater chance of snow, and summers are mild.
West Virginia’s newest booming industry is recreation. You’ll find first rate whitewater, mountain biking, hiking, caving, skiing, rock climbing, fishing and hunting. Watch the sparkling night skies, admire mile after mile of unspoiled autumn splendor, view breathtaking mountain vistas and relax in spectacular state parks and national forests. You’ll do it all in the state that’s practically in your own backyard.
An array of recreational facilities are offered at the state parks, state forests, resorts and wildlife management areas. Hunting, fishing, camping and hiking are abundant at the George Washington and Monongahela national forests. Winding from North Caldwell to Cass, the 80-mile Greenbrier River Trail is particularly popular for hiking and mountain biking. Spruce Knob-Seneca Rocks National Recreation Area preserves
for leisure use two exceptionally scenic sections of the Mountain State: the Seneca Rocks and Spruce Knob, the state’s highest point. White-water rafting is the newest of West Virginia’s recreational activities. Seven of the twenty-two major rivers are suitable for rafting. The New River Gorge National River, Bluestone National Scenic River and the Gauley River encompass a large section of West Virginia’s rafting country. A 15-mile section of the New River Gorge provides some of the most challenging rapids in the East.
West Virginia’s state parks offer accommodations and a variety of facilities. The lodges are known throughout the region. Many recreational facilities at the state parks operate year round. Camping season in the state parks runs from late April through October. To receive a copy of The State’s Official Travel Guide or for more information about West Virginia, call 1-800-CALL-WVA. NORTH CAROLINA
More than a vacation... Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is one of 10 lighthouses operating on North Carolina’s coast and the tallest in America at 208 feet. The candy-cane-striped structure projects light more than 20 miles out over the once-precarious Diamond Shoals. One of America’s most baffling mysteries occurred near what is now Manteo. In the 1580s, a group of colonists sponsored by Sir Walter Raleigh suddenly and mysteriously disappeared without a trace. Their whereabouts remain a mystery today. The oldest town in North Carolina is Bath, incorporated in 1705. The tallest natural sand dune on the East Coast is Jockey’s Ridge at
Nags Head, which stands 110-140 feet, depending on winds. Man’s first successful powered flight was made by Orville and Wilbur Wright on December 17, 1903, at Kill Devil Hills in Kitty Hawk. Founded in the 1970s, Duplin Winery was one of the first wineries in North Carolina after Prohibition. It is still operating today at Rose Hill with a 1,000,000-gallon tank capacity. It is one of the largest wineries in the South. Scuba divers are increasingly drawn to the “Graveyard of the Atlantic” off the NC coast, where the remains of more than 2,000 ships have settled to the ocean floor over the centuries. North Carolina is home to three aquariums - offering workshops,
educational trips and displays of live marine life - located in Manteo, Kure Beach and Pine Knoll Shores. New Bern is the second-oldest town in the state and was the first state capital. Royal Governor William Tryon made this seaport capital of the colony of North Carolina in 1770. After the Revolutionary War, New Bern became the capitol of the independent state of North Carolina. New Bern is the birthplace of Pepsi-Cola. The only area in which the carnivorous Venus Flytrap lives indigenously is within a 100-mile radius of Wilmington. The Gulf Stream makes its closest approach to land off the coast of North Carolina. This warm water current helps to make this one of the
best fishing spots on the Atlantic Seaboard. The 152,000-acre Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge in northeast North Carolina is one of the last remaining strongholds for black bear on the East Coast and has successfully restored red wolves to the area through a captive breeding program. The refuge conducts Red Wolf Howling Safaris to listen to the “music” of the wolves.
