The sun wakes in the eastern waves of the Atlantic Ocean, warms the sparkling sands and travels west over the lakes and rivers of the Piedmont region to the rocky western expanse. Melting into the wooded peaks and ascending majesty of the Appalachian and Great Smoky Mountains, the sunsets afford heavenly views from the worldrenowned Blue Ridge Parkway, which winds its way through the green mountain ranges of North Carolina. Hikers and camping enthusiasts never have to look far for contentment in the wooded regions of North Carolina. Beautiful hardwood forests cover two thirds of the mountainous landscape and boast having over 120 species of trees. One peak, Mount Mitchell, reaches 6,684 feet into the sky, making it the tallest peak in the state and eastern US. North Carolina’s Piedmont region rolls the foothills out into green meadows and prairies, stretching from the western mountain regions to the eastern shore. Some areas gather more than 30 inches of snow annually, making Piedmont a prime location for year-round recreation. Regional summers see low humidity and cool shady hideaways never lacking. Fishing, hiking, and picnicking maintain great popularity for summer adventurers, and skiing, snowboarding, and sledding is just around the corner with the winter snows!

Southern Gulf Stream currents brush against the North Carolina coast and warm the elegant beaches and rolling sand dunes. Jockey’s Ridge, a magnificent sand dune, is the highest along the eastern coast, decidedly one of the most romantic look outs onto the blue ocean. Local wetlands also offer beautiful picnicking spots and a great chance to view North Carolina’s diverse wildlife. Modern resorts and magnificent hotels border the shoreline for some of the greatest views in the state. Most famous for its Outer Banks, the 130 miles of North Carolina coast overreaches every vacationer’s dream. Secluded barrier islands present the perfect locations for shelling or just a quite day on the beach and water sports are always close at hand. Surfing, parasailing, and jet skiing are just a few of all the exciting opportunities. Museums, theme parks, and aquariums make the perfect day in town, and souvenir shops garland nearly every corner. Spas and cruises are always available for the most lavish retreats, but really, North Carolina itself is built on the natural luxuries of eastern United States. Festivals and regional celebrations add even more excitement to the year in all regions of the beautiful North Carolina. So fill your photo albums with the memories of a lifetime, live your fantasies, and succumb to the great North Carolina expanses, where perfection is year-round. ¤

KENTUCKY

The Welcome Mat is Always Out in Kentucky With six national areas, 50 state parks, and hundreds of recreational, natural, historic, and cultural attractions, Kentucky abounds in travel opportunities. From the hills and hollows of eastern Kentucky through the rolling bluegrass of our heartland to the massive lakes and flatlands of the west, Kentucky has much to offer. Each of Kentucky’s travel regions – Western Waterlands, Bluegrass Heartlands, Scenic Wonderlands, and Eastern Highlands – has its own charm and personality. From the huge lakes to festive river towns, Kentucky’s Western Waterlands Region offers sun and fun for the entire family. You will find surprises on every stop of the road. One of Kentucky’s giant outdoor recreation areas is the Land Between the Lakes – Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley area. Every member of the family will find something here for a great vacation. You can’t help but have fun surrounded by Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley, which together form one of the largest man-made bodies of water in the United States.

Kentucky Lake is nationally known for crappie fishing and inland sailing. Lake Barkley’s countless bays and inlets and sparsely developed shoreline are perfect for exploring and quiet relaxation. The 40-mile long peninsula that lies between these huge lakes – Land Between The Lakes – is a World Biosphere Reserve with 300 miles of undeveloped shoreline for waterfront and RV camping, swimming, fishing, riding, and hiking. Private and state resorts on both lakes provide every kind of vacation option, and there are plenty of attractions for days off the water. Western Kentucky is rich in music history. The father of bluegrass music, Bill Monroe, was born in Rosine in Ohio County; while W.C. Handy, the father of the blues, called Henderson home for 10 years. John Prine, Merle Travis and the Everly Brothers have Muhlenberg County ties; Boots Randolph was born in Trigg county. The Bluegrass Hall of Fame and Museum, headquartered in Owensboro, puts on the annual ROMP festival, June 26 - 29 in 2019. Thousands of fans from all

over the world gather at Daviess County Yellow Creek Park to hear the best bluegrass/folk-rock to be found anywhere. Additional offerings at ROMP Festival include organic and farm-to-table food vendors, craft vendors featuring Kentucky Proud products, art installations and professionally-led children’s activities. Kentucky’s famous Bluegrass Heartlands region has everything you could want in a vacation – history and heritage, sophisticated city and charming small towns . . . and horses. Outdoor adventure – above and below ground – is the ticket for Kentucky’s South Central Scenic Wonderland Region. You’ll fine fun and excitement at every stop. Return to simpler times and an unhurried pace among the breathtaking mountains of Kentucky’s Eastern Highlands Region. Real southern hospitality awaits at each stop on your trip. Kentucky is known the world over for its special and diverse natural beauty. Hundreds of thousands of visitors come each year to enjoy the scenery no matter what the season. A great way to see it all is to follow Kentucky’s designated Scenic

Byways. Chosen for their appeal in portraying the geographic beauty, all also have historical and cultural significance. Some byways travel past limestone palisades, waterfalls, and spring houses, skirting magnificent horse farms rimmed in fences of stone and plant. Some routes are lined with stately mansions, quaint homes and country churches, offering a glimpse into a bygone era. Old Frankfort Pike, chosen one of the nation’s top ten byways, features savanna woodlands reminiscent of the Bluegrass landscape before colonial settlement. Located within a day’s drive of over half the U.S. population, Kentucky is a beautiful and historic destination. You are sure to find something to spark your interest. Bourbon, music, crafts, cultural heritage, horses and history are a small sampling of what is available throughout the Commonwealth of Kentucky. All year long, Kentucky is alive with more than 700 festivals, several world-class sporting championships,

major concerts and a whole lot more. Whether it’s a Bluegrass jam session or a symphony orchestra concert, an apple festival or an art opening, Kentucky can fill your calendar in a heartbeat. Whether you’re looking for an historic inn, a quaint bed-andbreakfast, a rustic cabin or an affordable hotel near attractions, Kentucky is one of the most accommodating places you’ll ever find. Choose your location and the features you desire and plan a great stay. Located at the junction of four of the largest rivers in the United States-the Cumberland, Tennessee, Ohio and Mississippi-Kentucky has more running water than any other state besides Alaska. From the eastern mountains to the western river plateau, Kentucky offers a wide variety of outdoor recreation. If you’re ready to relax and have some fun, you’re going to love it here! The beaches are some of the finest in the world and have been rated among the top ten each year in Dr. Beach’s America’s Best Beach list each year. They are rated among the best for beauty, facilities and ease of access. Families, couples or singles enjoy year round sunshine and soft white sand and clear water. The waters along its beaches are generally warm in comparison to the rest of the country. Beaches are a great way to get out in the sun, to

play, to stroll and look for shells or to relax on a beach chair in the warm sunshine while reading a good book or just enjoying the companionship and the activity all around. With the many miles of coastline and the hundreds of natural lakes, Florida offers much for boaters. It is ideal for power-boating, sailing, kayaking, water-skiing, wake boarding, wind surfing and canoeing. Like fishing? You will find bass fishing, inshore saltwater and flats fishing and offshore saltwater fishing if you want to catch the “big ones.” You may bring your own boat or charter one. Common and popular game fish include the sailfish and blue marlin.

Florida is the “golf capital of the world.” The year round sun attracts hundreds of thousands of golfers each year. There are over 1,000 public, private and semiprivate courses in which numerous cheap golf courses are also available. No matter your golfing ability or budget, there are courses to suit all needs. To avoid large crowds and packed attraction, as well as expensive lodging, make plans to visit Florida during the off-season, which is during the months of May through October. This is also a popular time for families with school-age children. Traveling during the “off seasons” can be rewarding. ¤
