www.flightglobal.com SAS to order 50 more A320neo Scandinavia's SAS Group is to order 50 more Airbus A320neos to replace Boeing 737s and older A320 jets. SAS had previously indicated that the A320neo was the prime candidate for a further fleet expansion. The airline had already ordered 30 of the type, of which 17 have been delivered. SAS says it will take 15 aircraft from the new batch of 50 for delivery over 2019-21. It says that these have been "secured through declarations of intent with lessors". The other 35 aircraft will be delivered directly from Airbus, up to 2023. No engine selection has been made for the additional aircraft, although SAS's current A320neo fleet is powered by the CFM International Leap-1A. SAS has also placed options for another five A320neos as part of the agreement.

www.flightglobal.com AIX: Brussels Airlines to upgrade cabins on A330 fleet Brussels Airlines has engaged London-based JPA Design to create a new cabin interior for its A330 fleet. The upgrade will cover the entire cabin – featuring business, premium and standard economy class – and lavatories. JPA says the "all-new product range… will launch at the end of 2018". The design firm says its brief was to capture the Lufthansa Group carrier's "fun and vibrant personality" through the retrofit programme. John Tighe, JPA's director of transport, states the design team spent "a great deal of time getting to know the carrier, its people and the culture of Belgium". "We've discovered the warmth of the locals, the focus on being sociable, the love of their iconic comic characters and the quirkiness of the unique „Belgitude‟ character," he says. The cabin refurbishment will "not only reflect our DNA, but also offer our guests top-notch comfort", says Brussels Airlines vice-president product and marketing Tanguy Cartuyvels. Flight Fleets Analyzer shows the airline has four A330200s and six -300s in service, and two -300s in storage

United Airlines has painted its first Boeing 737 Max 9 in the swoop livery that adorns its Dreamliners, as it prepares to take its first aircraft later in April The 737-9 is the first aircraft type in the US carrier's fleet to receive the swoop livery since it was introduced on the Boeing 787 in 2012. United is scheduled to take its first three 737-9s (MSNs 43430, 43431 and 43434) this month, with 10 aircraft due in 2018, its fleet plan shows. The Chicago-based airline has 61 737-9s and 100 737 Max 10s on firm order. United will station 737-9s at its Houston Intercontinental and Los Angeles hubs from June, introducing the aircraft on its Houston routes to Anchorage, Austin, Fort Lauderdale and San Diego on 7 June. Its 737-9 network will be expanded to include Honolulu, Los Angeles and Sacramento from 29 June. United's 737-9s will be configured with 179 seats, comprising 20 in first class and 159 in economy – the same density as its 737900ERs. The airline is the US launch operator of the 737-9, which was delivered to global launch operator Thai Lion Air in March.

www.ch-aviation.com India's Pathankot sees maiden scheduled ops by Alliance Air Alliance Air (India) (9I, Mumbai Int'l) launched a 3x weekly service connecting Pathankot with Delhi Int'lon April 5, marking the launch of scheduled operations at the former airport in northern India, ANI newswire has reported. The flights are marketed under the Air India Regional brand and operated under the flag carrier's code. Air India is Alliance Air's parent company. The maiden service to Pathankot is a result of India's regional connectivity scheme (Ude Desh Ka Aam Naagrik - UDAN), a subsidy programme aimed at boosting air connectivity to under- and unserved airports around the country. Alliance Air was awarded a total of fifteen routes under the scheme in the first round of bidding in March 2017 (which included the Pathankot service), followed by a further nine routes in the second round awarded in January 2018. Under the terms of the UDAN scheme, half of all tickets on each of the routes are capped at an INR2,500 rupees (USD39) per hour of flights. The carriers are also eligible for a Viability Gap Funding (VGF) from the central government in order to guarantee a routes' economical viability. Alliance Air currently operates a fleet of sixteen Avions de Transport Régional turboprops, including four ATR42-300s and twelve ATR72-600s. According to the ch-aviation fleets module, the carrier also expects the imminent delivery of a further four aircraft of the latter type

www.ch-aviation.com Kenya's Silverstone Air to add first jets in late 2Q18 Silverstone Air Services (K5, Nairobi Wilson) is planning to begin jet operations with the upcoming addition of an unspecified number of CRJ-200s. Managing Director Mohamed Somow told African Aerospace the Bombardier regional jets would allow Silverstone Air to expand its operations to include more destinations in northern Kenya including Marsabit, Wajir, and Mandera.

At present, the carrier operates two Dash 8-100s and two Fokker 50s on scheduled passenger flights covering Lodwar in Kenya's northwest, Kisumu in its west, Nairobi Wilson, its hub, in the centre, and Lamu, Malindi, Mombasa, and Ukunda along its southeastern coastline. “We are looking forward to exposing ourselves fully to competition to make us a stronger and better airline,” he said. In addition to the CRJ-200s, Silverstone Air is also planning to lease two Dash 8-300s, with the first aircraft set to deliver in June

IATA Reiterates Strong Support for New Mexico City Airport Miami- The International Air Transport Association (IATA) emphasized its strong support for the construction of a new international airport for Mexico City that was launched in 2014 to replace Benito Juárez International Airport. "The current airport is bursting at the seams. It serves 47 million passengers, almost 50% over its design capacity of 32 million. A new airport is vital to enable Mexico City to benefit more fully from its ideal geographic position linking North America and Latin America," said Peter Cerda, IATA's Regional Vice President for the Americas. Aviation already makes an enormous contribution to Mexico's economy, supporting 1 million jobs and 2.9% of GDP, including the economic contribution of foreign tourists arriving by air. But lack of infrastructure capacity at its capital city is degrading the country's ability to capture an even larger share of the benefits of aviation connectivity, regionally and globally, according to a new IATA study. The study shows that for a country of its size, Mexico underperforms in terms of its integration with the global air transport network. This means that aviation is not fully delivering the benefits that it could with sufficient infrastructure. In this regard, Mexico trails countries with much smaller home markets, including Panama, the Dominican Republic, Colombia, Peru, and Chile.[1]

‫صورة أرشٌفٌة‬

http://www.iata.org

The IATA study also identifies the cost of missed opportunities if infrastructure development does not keep pace with demand for aviation connectivity. If the new airport is not built, it could mean 20 million fewer passengers per year by 2035. This translates into a negative impact of up to $20 billion in future GDP contribution and up to 200,000 fewer jobs in Mexico supported by aviation in 2035. "With its enormous local population, strong attractions for business and tourism, and geographic advantages, Mexico City has the ability to play a much bigger role on the world stage. But for that to happen, aviation infrastructure needs to be adequate and affordable, which is why it is absolutely vital that the new Mexico City Airport is built as planned," said Cerda. [1] This is based on a qualitative measure of the number and economic importance of destinations served from the main airports in a country, the frequency of service to each destination and the number of forward connections available from each destination, weighted by the GDP of each country

http://www.bbc.com Stansted Airport baggage delays disrupt 'hundreds' of passengers Stansted Airport passengers have complained of having to wait "over two hours" to collect their baggage. An airport spokesman apologised and blamed it on a "significant number" of delayed inbound flights due to fog. Ryanair passenger Katriona Whelan said there were "hundreds, if not thousands" of people waiting when she arrived on her delayed flight at about 02:00 BST. She said: "They just wanted to know when they were going to get their bags and could they have some water." She added: "It's a pity they didn't have a plan in terms of communicating with customers about the reasons for the delays and how long we would be delayed for." Ms Whelan said that after her flight from Shannon had landed, the luggage carousels only began to move two-and-a-half hours later at 04:30 BST, she said. About 30 delayed flights landed at Stansted between 00:00 and 03:00. One passenger tweeted there was a queue of "almost 1,000 people" at baggage reclaim. Replying to passengers on Twitter, the airport said: "We're sorry to hear of your disappointing experience last night. "Due to a significant number of inbound flights arriving late, passengers experienced delays receiving their baggage. "On behalf of our airlines/handling agents & the airport we apologise for the inconvenience caused." The service has since returned to normal.

Lufthansa cancels 800 flights amid strike action

Lufthansa has been forced to cancel 800 flights on Tuesday as the spring of discontent among Europe's workers spreads to Germany. The airline has axed half of its 1,600 scheduled flights, affecting 90,000 passengers. Workers are staging the walkout ahead of pay talks, following similar action in France. Air France is expected to face further disruption on Tuesday after industrial action at the weekend. Lufthansa told passengers whose flights had not been cancelled to allow more time to travel and get to airports earlier. The walk-out does not involve Lufthansa's own staff but public sector workers such as ground handlers at Frankfurt, Munich, Cologne and Bremen airports. The trade union Verdi said the strikes were intended to "increase pressure" on public sector employers ahead of wage talks. However, Lufthansa said it "cannot comprehend Verdi's threat to carry out such a massive strike".

"It is completely unacceptable for the union to impose this conflict on uninvolved passengers," said Bettina Volkens, Lufthansa's head of human resources. "Lufthansa is not a part of this collective bargaining conflict, but unfortunately our customers and our company are being affected by the consequences of this dispute." She added: "Politicians and legislators must define clear rules for strikes and industrial actions." Lufthansa said normal services would resume on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Air France said that it will operate 75% of its flights on Tuesday after grounding one third of services on Saturday. Unions representing airline staff are demanding a 6% pay rise from the company, which is offering a 1% increase. Rail travel in France is also under pressure amid ongoing strikes by SNCF staff in response to labour reforms under President Emmanuel Macron.

Lufthansa Cancels Half Of Tuesday Flights Due To Strike

Lufthansa has cancelled more than 800 flights for Tuesday as a result of German union Verdi‟s call for strikes at Frankfurt, Munich, Cologne and Bremen airports. The airline said ground handling and support services staff, and part of the airport fire service will strike between 05:00 and 18:00 (5am - 6pm) on Tuesday, causing the cancellation of around half the airline‟s 1,600 scheduled flights. About 90,000 of its passengers will be affected, Lufthansa said. The Verdi union has called for “widespread strikes in all federal states” from April 10 to 14 in support of a 6 percent wage increase for its 2.3 million public service members. It is also seeking an increase in training allowances and wants trainees to be employed on a permanent basis after a “successful” completion of training. Lufthansa‟s Bettina Volkens said “It is completely unacceptable for the union to impose this conflict on uninvolved passengers. Lufthansa is not a part of this collective bargaining conflict, but unfortunately our customers and our company are being affected.

We regret that the travel plans of so many customers are being affected by this Verdi strike and we are working on minimising the impact as much as possible.” Germany‟s busiest airport, Frankfurt, expects “major disruptions and flight cancellations” on Tuesday with part of its Terminal 1 closed because of the strike. The airport‟s operators Fraport said passengers should check with their airline on flight status, and allow extra travel time to the airport. Munich, the country‟s second busiest airport for international flights, said it is expecting severe disruption on Tuesday, with longer wait times at security checkpoints throughout the day. It stressed the need to allow extra travel time to get to the airport and asked passengers on confirmed flights to arrive “as early as possible.” Lufthansa has published an alternative flight schedule and requested passengers to check the status of their flights before leaving for the airport.

http://www.arabnews.com Air France says 7 days of strikes cost company 170 million euros

PARIS: Air France said Tuesday that seven daylong strikes since February by workers demanding higher pay are set to cost it 170 million euros ($209 million). “The impact on Air France‟s operating profit of seven days of strikes between February 22 and April 11 is estimated at 170 million euros,” the group said as workers were to stay away again Tuesday and Wednesday, for a total of seven days since the series began in February. The estimate was contained a statement on the passenger numbers of Air France-KLM, which said they had increased by 5.4 percent in March.
