http://www.ainonline.com/ Charter Market Report 2016

Belying the relatively static activity metrics, the air charter market has seen—and instigated— significant change in the past year. Charter fleets are being bolstered, operators are consolidating and upstart access providers are offering nontraditional lift, from per-seat offerings to new jet card programs—all while under the pressure of low margins that show no signs of lifting. Here are some of the companies and developments that helped reshape the industry over the past year.

Terrorist attacks and economic challenges see Turkish Airlines defer orders for new jets Istanbul-based Turkish Airlines has announced that it intends to defer 39 of its on-order narrow-body jets, citing the impact of terrorist attacks on leisure travel and the fall in oil prices negatively affecting corporate travel in the oil and gas sector. While the Star Alliance member-airline has not given planespecific details, it is understood that it has decided to reschedule delivery of 92 Airbus A321neos and 65 Boeing 737 MAX8s, together with 10 Boeing 737 MAX 9 aircraft which were expected to join the airline‘s fleet between 2018 – 2022. Where 2018 is concerned, the original order for 34 narrowbody aircraft has been reduced to 10, for 2019 the number is to be reduced from 40 to 35, and for 2020 it is 52 reduced to 42. The airline expects to receive 30 re-engined aircraft in 2022 and 15 in 2023. The carrier took delivery of its 300th plane earlier this year and all those scheduled for delivery this year will still be accepted, which will include five Airbus A330-200s, seven A321s, one A330-200F, six Boeing 777-300ERs and 14 737800s. First half figures reported by Turkish Airlines revealed a net loss of TRY1.89 billion (US$610 million) which has seen a substantial reversal from the same period in 2015 which generated a net profit of TRY1.04 million (US$343 million).

http://www.avitrader.com/ Cessna Citation Longitude takes to the skies

Cessna Aircraft Company announced the successful first flight of its Citation Longitude super-midsize jet. The flight comes less than a year after the company unveiled new details for the revolutionary aircraft – the company‘s latest example of continued investment in its family of larger business jets. The Longitude took off from the company‘s east campus Beech Field Airport, piloted by experimental test pilots Ed Wenninger and Stuart Rogerson. During the two hour and two minute flight, the team tested the aircraft‘s flaps, landing gear, pressurization systems, stability and control. The prototype aircraft will continue to expand the performance envelope, focusing on testing flight controls and aerodynamics, while the first production model, set to fly in the coming weeks, will be primarily used for systems testing.

http://www.avitrader.com/ Bombardier CS300 aircraft awarded Type Validation by EASA

The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has awarded Type Validation to Bombardier‘s CS300 aircraft. The validation is a requirement for the aircraft‘s operation in Europe and a precursor to first delivery to CS300 launch operator, airBaltic of Latvia. Bombardier‘s first CS300 aircraft delivery to airBaltic is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2016. EASA‘s validation follows the CS300 aircraft Type Certification awarded by Transport Canada in July 2016.

Turkish Airlines defers 39 A321neo & 737 MAX deliveries Istanbul-based Turkish Airlines will defer 39 narrowbody deliveries from a 167-strong Airbus and Boeing aircraft order because of decreased demand resulting from a series of terrorist bombings and other economic challenges in Turkey. The Star Alliance member reported to the Borsa Istanbul stock exchange Oct. 7 that it has decided to reschedule deliveries of some of its 92 Airbus A321neo, 65 Boeing 737 MAX 8 and 10 737 MAX 9 aircraft that were planned to enter the fleet between 2018-2022. The airline declined to give details on which aircraft types are affected by year, but said narrowbody deliveries will be reduced from 34 to 10 for 2018; from 40 to 35 for 2019; and from 52 to 42 for 2020. Six of the re-engined narrowbody aircraft are expected to be delivered in 2021, 30 in 2022 and 15 in 2023. Turkish took delivery of its 300th aircraft earlier this year. CEO Temel Kotil told ATW recently that all aircraft planned for delivery this year will be accepted. For the full-year 2016, Turkish plans to add five Airbus A330-200s, seven A321s, one A330-200F, six Boeing 777-300ERs and 14 737-800s to its fleet. Turkish Airlines recorded a first-half 2016 net loss of TRY1.89 million ($644 million), reversed from a net profit of TRY1.04 million for the year-ago period. Turkish Airlines is targeting 61.2 million passengers carried for 2016.

http://atwonline.com/ China‘s Juneyao Airlines joins Star Alliance as a connecting partner Juneyao Airlines and Star Alliance have formally sealed a strategic partnership, which will see the Shanghai-based carrier become a connecting partner in 2017. Under the partnership concept, Star Alliance said the airline will soon start offering services such as through-check-in, as well as lounge access and other priority privileges to qualifying passengers traveling on connecting itineraries with member airlines. ―Juneyao Airlines is a terrific addition to our network proposition in China and particularly in the Shanghai market,‖ Star Alliance CEO Mark Schwab said. ―Thanks to Juneyao‘s expanding reach, our passengers will enjoy a wide choice of flight connections through our future partner to numerous Chinese metropoles and several international destinations.‖ According to a Star Alliance statement, the Connecting Partner Model is designed to allow airlines to connect to the alliance‘s network without having to become a full member. ―For customers, this gives access to additional travel options beyond the current 1,300 airports served by the alliance‘s 28 member airlines. Connecting partners are carefully selected and need to adhere to the high operating standards required by the alliance. Connecting partners will enter into bilateral commercial agreements with selected Star Alliance member airlines, which may include Frequent Flyer Program-based privileges,‖ Star said. Currently, 17 Star Alliance member airlines operate around 1,600 weekly services in and out of the two Shanghai airports, Pudong International and Hongqiao International, which are both served by Juneyao Airlines. With a fleet of 56 aircraft, Juneyao Airlines provides more than 1,700 weekly flights to 69 destinations in eight countries and regions. ―We offer 53 additional routes which will complement Star Alliance‘s existing services from Shanghai and will no doubt attract more connecting passengers to our two home hub airports,‖ Juneyao Airlines chairman Wang Junjin said. He did not rule out the possibility of joining Star Alliance as a formal partner in the future. http://atwonline.com/ ATSB confirms wing trailing edge debris is from MH370 The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) has confirmed that a piece of wing trailing edge debris, foundin Mauritius around May 10 is from the Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777 that crashed in March 2014 while operating asMH370. In an update released Oct. 7, the ATSB said the item of composite debris—referred to as part number six—was a trailing edge section of 777‘s left, outboard flap, originating from the Malaysia Airlines aircraft. ―A part number was identified on a section of the debris, identifying it as a trailing edge splice strap, incorporated into the rear spar assembly of a Boeing 777 left outboard flap,‖ the ATSB said. ―Adjacent to the part number was an ‗OL‘ part identifier, similar to those found on the right outboard flap section. The flap manufacturer supplied records indicating that this identifier was a unique work order number and that the referred part was incorporated into the outboard flap shipset line number 404, which corresponded to the Boeing 777 aircraft line number 404, registered 9M-MRO and operating as MH370.‖ To date, the ATSB has confirmed six items as being from—or almost certainly from—MH370 that went missing March 8, 2014 while en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing with 239 passengers and crew on board. French air accident investigation body BEA has also positively confirmed that a flaperon, found on Reunion Island on July 29, 2015, was from MH370.

http://atwonline.com/ IATA: World passenger traffic growth slips to 4.6% in August Worldwide air passenger traffic increased 4.6% year-over-year (YOY) in August, a slowdown from July‘s revised 6.9% YOY growth pace, according to IATA‘s August Air Passenger Market Analysis. Total market capacity increased 5.8% YOY in July, leading to a total market passenger load factor of 83.8%, down 0.9 point from July. ―While that‘s disappointing compared to the previous month‘s performance, it is still healthy growth,‖ IATA CG and CEO Alexandre de Juniac said. ―And although terrorist attacks in Europe have dampened demand, the impact is ebbing.‖ ―European international traffic picked up in August, which suggests that things are getting back to normal after the disruption in the region this year,‖ IATA senior economist David Oxley said. ―Asian passengers [are] still … being put off by terrorism in Europe, though, and it appears that they are substituting leisure travel to destinations closer to home.‖ The Middle East had the biggest increase in traffic in August, up 9.9% YOY, followed by the Asia-Pacific region, with traffic rising 7.8% YOY in the area with the world‘s largest market share )31.5%). Europe, with the second largest market share (26.7%), saw its overall passenger traffic volume rise 2.7% in August. Latin American showed a 6.7% rise in international traffic in August, spurred in part by the 2016 Summer Olympics in Brazil, IATA said. International capacity increased 4% and the load factor rose 2.1 points to 84%. Latin American carriers were part of the only region worldwide that saw a rise in international traffic load factors in August. Year-to-date, global passenger traffic has grown 5.8%, capacity has risen 6.1% and the year-to-date passenger load factor is 80.5%. ―The bigger picture remains that passenger traffic this year has still grown broadly in line with the average pace seen over the past decade or so,‖ Oxley said. ―[It] is set for another year of solid growth in the year as a whole.‖

Etihad strengthens African connections United Arab Emirates flag carrier Etihad Airways has increased links to Africa with the signing of a codeshare agreement with South African low-cost carrier (LCC) kulula. The codeshare, which becomes effective Oct. 30, will seeEtihad placing its EY code on flights to several kulula services from Johannesburg to the South African cities of Cape Town, Durban, George and East London. Etihad operates into Johannesburg from its Abu Dhabi hub. The new agreement will allow passengers to check in at Abu Dhabi for South African destinations via Johannesburg and for baggage to be transferred to connecting flights. The codeshare will bring the number of African destinations it serves across the continent to 23 through its existing codeshare partnerships with Kenya Airways, Royal Air Maroc, and strategic equity partner Air Seychelles. Gulf carriers such as Etihad, Emirates and Qatar Airways, as well as Turkish Airlines, have been ramping up their penetration of African routes in recent years, and several African flag carriers have seen traffic start to drain away to the Middle East hubs. ―Kulula is an innovative and award-winning airline and this new codeshare agreement demonstrates Etihad Airways‘ growing ambitions to strengthen our operations across Africa,‖ Etihad CEO Peter Baumgartner said. ―Through the agreement, kulula will give inbound passengers direct access from Johannesburg to four key destinations along South Africa‘s renowned coastline, and I am certain the extended reach offered through this partnership will appeal to business and leisure travelers alike.‖ Erik Venter, CEO of kulula‘s parent company, Comair, welcomed the addition of Etihad to the LCC‘s growing list of strategic airline partnerships and said it would be seeking ―additional opportunities to expand on the relationship.‖
