Boeing had secured orders for 171 of the variant, the largest version of the 787, by the end of October. These included 163 distributed between nine identified operators – among them Emirates neighbour Etihad Airways – plus eight for an undisclosed customer. Emirates is expecting to take delivery of the 787-10s from 2022, said chairman Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum during the Dubai air show. The carrier had been weighing the 787-10 against the Airbus A350-900. Al Maktoum described the 787-10 as "the best option", stressing that Emirates' analysis did not focus simply on price. Boeing says the agreement includes conversion rights to swap to the smaller 787-9. The -10s will be delivered with both twoand three-class cabins, capable of accommodating 240-300 passengers. FlightGlobal understands from a source familiar with the discussions that no Airbus A350 agreement is in play for Emirates during the Dubai show – although this does not necessarily rule the twinjet out of the airline's plans. Emirates had previously been a customer for the A350 with orders for 70 – a mix of -900s and -1000s – but it scrapped the deal in mid-2014. Although the 787-10 agreement amounts to barely half the number of cancelled airframes, Al Maktoum underlines that the carrier still has dozens of Boeing 777X and Airbus A380 jets on order.

www.flightglobal.com DUBAI: Emirates Airbus deal still being finalised Emirates still appears to be refining an agreement with Airbus, after a highly-anticipated event during the Dubai air show featured only an agreement for Boeing 787s. While several senior Airbus personnel had been present at the event, only Emirates chairman Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al-Maktoum and Boeing Commercial Airplanes chief Kevin McAllister ultimately took the floor. The situation clearly surprised many in the audience, with a number of Boeing representatives having expected to learn details of an Airbus agreement as part of the event. A source familiar with the negotiations says an Airbus agreement is still in flux, despite earlier indications to the contrary, but stresses that the Dubai show is only part-way through its opening day. Emirates is discussing a potential follow-on order for Airbus A380s. It is already the largest customer for the type, by far, with 100 in the fleet and another 42 on order.

www.flightglobal.com DUBAI: Emirates looks to put new 777 suites on A380 too Emirates is working to revamp the first-class suites on its Airbus A380s, having formally unveiled the new private cabins on a Boeing 777-300ER. The Dubai-based airline's first-class modernisation – featuring six suites in the 300ER – is effectively a precursor to the cabin which will feature on its new 777X from 2020. It has a single -300ER fitted with the cabin and will install the suites on around half a dozen -300ERs still to be delivered, although it has yet to decide the extent to which it might retrofit the current fleet. But president Tim Clark says the suites on the A380 are a "formidable task", adding that they would reduce first-class accommodation on the type from 14 to 11. "We'll get around to it as soon as we can," he says, adding that the A380 version is a "work in progress". Clark says the inspiration for the suites derives from the operator's private Airbus ACJ319, and follows a relaxing of criteria allowing the use of enclosed compartments. "The regulators [initially] wouldn't let us do that," he says, adding that the airline has faced "multiple challenges" with ensuring compliance with requirements for lighting and emergency evacuation. Such is the width of the suite that Emirates has adopted a 1-1-1 configuration, but the centre suite will feature artificial windows which will receive a live image transmission from external cameras. "It's such high definition that it produces a better image than the naked eye," says Clark. Emirates has drawn on automotive expertise from Mercedes-Benz for the interior design. Clark says the automotive industry "uses space in a way that excites and excels", and the Mercedes influence shows up in various details including the materials and the design of switches. The suite design features a seat which shifts further to the outer wall as it reclines into a bed, providing the passenger with additional space, and the personal accessories include a pair of binoculars to explore the outside scene. Emirates will initially use the newly-equipped 777-300ER on routes to Brussels and Geneva but Clark indicates that candidate destinations include Chicago, Brisbane or Perth. Retrofit of other 777s would depend, among other criteria, on the life remaining in the jets. Clark says that, despite a trend for airlines to reduce their first-class offering, the demand for such premium cabins on Emirates is still "very strong" and adds: "First class remains core to what Emirates does."

Back at the 2007 Dubai Air Show, the airline had ordered 70 Airbus A350s in lieu of the Boeing 787. However, Emirates changed its mind and canceled the order for the Airbus wide-body in 2014. The Boeing 787-10 has the lowest cost of operation, even against all A350 variants,‖ continued the Sheikh, who admitted that it was a ―nobrainer‖ for the Emirati carrier to select the Dreamliner program. The Sheikh went on to admit that Emirates compared both programs as if they were apples to apples. ―We looked at different options for maintenance and so on and came to the agreement,‖ he said. ―We are excited that Emirates has selected the Boeing 787-10 Dreamliner to power its fleet expansion and future growth,‖ continued said Boeing Commercial Airplanes President & CEO Kevin McAllister. ―This is an airplane that will set a new benchmark for operating economics in the commercial aviation industry when it enters service next year.‖

The airline also unveiled an all-new First Class suite onboard its Boeing 777 fleet. In a partnership with Mercedes-Benz, the airline launched its new premium product which is inspired by the motorcar’s interiors. Furnished by B/E Aerospace, the six new closed-door suites come with full flat beds and large 32-inch entertainment screens. The airline’s CEO, Tim Clark, admitted that the airline hasn’t decided when these will be added to the A380 fleet, though it remains within scope. Tim Clark said it is the first time anything like this has come out in the aviation world and that the airline had spent ―an awful lot of money‖ developing the new hard product. Since the new First Class was designed after MercedesBenz’s idea of motorsport luxury, Emirates partnered with Jeremy Clarkson—former Top Gear star—to advertise the new premium product.

Dubai Air Show: FlyDubai Goes Full-Flat Upfront, New Uniforms

MIAMI — Low-cost, Middle-Eastern carrier FlyDubai unveiled its all-new full-flat upfront seating configuration on their first Boeing 737 MAX at the Dubai Air Show. Showing a two-class configuration, the Business Class seats are furnished by Recaro’s Thomson Business product. The updated Business Class configuration is set as in a 2-2/1-1 layout, much like JetBlue’s revolutionary Mint. The new seats offer a wide armrest followed by a divider for personal space. Each seat turns into a 1.98m full-flat bed and comes with the common amenities expected in such seating environmentThe Zodiac Aerospace’s economy seats that are on display provide IFE, hinting at the fact that the operations of this aircraft look towards the medium-long-haul perspective, and also feature USB chargers and audio jacks for basic entertainment use. These seats are configured in a conventional 3-3 layout.

FlyDubai could be going towards somewhere like JetBlue’s Mint program in the sense that they want to offer better customer experiences at more affordable prices to its customer base. Emirates, the owner, might be looking to consolidate this project to bridge the gap between their competitors in the Middle East. FlyDubai has expanded quite vastly over the past few years, offering services to destinations across Eastern Europe and Russia. JetBlue is also doing the same with their Mint program, expanding to new destinations across the Caribbean and coast-to-coast points across the mainland United States. READ MORE: Flying JetBlue’s Mint Premium Product However, JetBlue’s strategy differs to FlyDubai’s as The Middle Eastern carrier has not yet refined their concept to being an all-across range. Mint offers an experience from the origin, during in-flight experiences, and also when the passenger lands at their destination, offering faster check-in times at their origin to their first bag being dropped at the carousel after landing. However, FlyDubai looks to be on their way in terms of alignment. The design of their business class is different to that of the Mint product. It appears that the design is part of a model that definitely wants to adapt to the Mint strategy, which is to provide premium flying at a lower cost, something Emirates will especially be keen to do. The Boeing 737 MAX will certainly enable FlyDubai to do this, especially with the configurations that they are advertising. At this time, however, the strategy isn’t completed. This is just simply the case of FlyDubai expanding their wings to show the world what they can do and what they want to do as well. This conveys a sense of confidence which will definitely attract the attention of other premium carriers and maybe learn what they are about to do. FlyDubai could, in theory, revolutionize that segment, especially for small aircraft like the 737MAX as many business classes across the world don’t offer a flatbed service. It will most likely show a gamechanger in the industry for years to come.

Honeywell Aerospace (Chalet A19) announced at the Dubai Airshow signing a 15-year agreement with Dubai’s Emirates Airline to maintain Honeywell components on the airline’s fleet of Airbus A380s and Boeing 777s. The Component Service Solutions agreement extends through 2031 and covers comprehensive component repairs and support solutions for the fleet, thus reducing grounded aircraft time, according to Honeywell. Emirates is the world’s largest operator of the A380 and 777. ―One of our goals is to increase the lifespan of Honeywell aircraft components and reduce airline operating costs,‖ said Randy Anderson, vice president, Airlines—Europe Middle East, Africa and India, Honeywell Aerospace. ―With our 24/7 aircraft on-the-ground support and 24-hour critical shipment of Honeywell avionics and mechanical parts, Emirates can benefit from a significant reduction in departure delays and cancelations, which will help Emirates’s commitment to on-time arrivals.‖
