1 British Airways Announces New Portland Route Operated By The 787 British Airways has announced that Portland is the latest destination to be added to the British airline’s growing route network. The UK flag carrier will launch flights to the west coast destination from the 1st of June 2020 It has been a busy year for British Airways as far as routes go. The flag carrier of Britain had, before today, announced 15 new routes throughout the course of the year. Of course, with the addition of Portland, this has risen to 16. The airline announced a host of these routes, short hauls from London Heathrow, last week.

The new Portland service British Airways’ new service to Portland, Oregan, is set to take to the skies from the 1st of June 2020. Coincidentally, this is the same day that Aeroflot will launch their London Airbus A350 service. The aircraft will be operated by the Boeing 787. While the airline hasn’t mentioned which of the three variants it will use, Head For Points thinks it will be the smallest of the family, the 787-8. Key to joint business strategy According to Neil Chernoff, British Airways’ Director of Networks and Alliances, the new route to Portland will be key to the airline’s joint business strategy. This strategy has been agreed with American Airlines, Finnair and Iberia, who are also launching more flights. British Airways yesterday announced a separate joint business agreement with China Southern.

Mr Chernoff said:

―Portland will be a fantastic addition to our route map. As a major technology and innovation hub the city is drawing ever-increasing numbers of international visitors. Since 2015 we’ve launched routes to Pittsburgh, Charleston, Nashville, New Orleans and San Jose, and this is key to our joint business strategy which is growing across North America. We’re confident the route will be warmly welcomed by both business and leisure travellers.‖ Will you find the new route to Portland Handy? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!

1 Inquiry raps VIP 777 operator over safety practices Investigators have concluded that the VIP carrier involved in a serious Boeing 777-200ER wing-strike incident at Le Bourget was operating with poor safety practices. French investigation authority BEA has outlined several issues with the Saudilinked carrier, Mid East Jet, in the aftermath of the 5 June 2016 event. It describes the company as having no safety-management system, adding that its practices are ―not conducive to a culture of safety‖. Three pilots – a flight captain, reserve captain acting as first officer, and a trip captain primarily for administrative tasks – were in the cockpit of the aircraft when it carried out an unstable approach to runway 25, striking the right wingtip and horizontal stabiliser before climbing away on a late go-around. ―These three pilots [changed] function with each new flight, without there being a hierarchy between them,‖ says French investigation authority BEA, adding that this would have not encouraged effective crew-resource management. The pilots involved, it says, were dismissed shortly after the incident. Mid East Jet did not participate in the inquiry despite being contacted by the Saudi Arabian representative to the investigation. But investigators were told that the crews ―never‖ trained for the approach to Paris, but rather conducted simulated approaches typically to Washington during training at the Boeing centre in Miami. ―They believe that the simulation sessions are not in line with the operational environment specific to their activity,‖ says BEA. BEA adds that the Mid East Jet pilots only operate five or six times per year to Le Bourget and ―rarely, if ever‖ follow the runway 25 LOC A approach which requires a late alignment at low altitude. The inquiry says the crew had been hoping for an improvement in the weather conditions ahead of carrying out the approach. When this improvement turned out to be slower than expected, the crew considered a diversion either to Paris Charles de Gaulle, Paris Orly or Lyon.

‫االدارة العامة للعالقات العامة والمراسم‬ ‫الشركة القابضة لمصر للطيران‬

2 Both Paris airports were experiencing difficulties and the carrier ―refused‖ a diversion to Lyon, says BEA. American Airlines and Continental Airlines. BEA adds that the inquiry was told, by the trip captain, that the nature of the company’s operations means the crew is often relayed instructions by radio. ―These interventions do not take into account the operational constraints of the pilots,‖ says the inquiry. ―The calls were almost continuous during the approach and [the trip captain] had to ask the flight engineer [who was present in the cockpit[ to stop them.‖ None of the three pilots considered the weather to be a problem as they embarked on the Le Bourget approach. They had initially requested an ILS 27 approach but air traffic control authorized the LOC A approach to runway 25. BEA says the reserve captain and the trip captain were ―surprised‖ by the closeness of the runway as the aircraft emerged from cloud. It adds that the flight captain believed he would be able to continue the approach despite overshooting the line-up turn. Although the flight captain told the inquiry that he did not hear any of the other crew members call for a go-around, both of the other captains stated that they heard one another call for a go-around when the aircraft crossed the runway centreline. All four of the cockpit occupants – the three captains and the engineer – were US citizens, with the pilots having previously flown for carriers including

SriLankan, Qatar expand codeshare agreement SriLankan Airlines will add 18 new points to its codeshare agreement with fellow Oneworld alliance member Qatar Airways, building on the partnership that first began in 2016. SriLankan will be adding its code on Qatar’s flights out of Doha to European cities such as Helsinki, Budapest, Munich, Lisbon and Edinburgh. The expanded codeshare also includes points in North and South America, such as Chicago, Houston and Sao Paolo. Qatar, meanwhile, will codeshare on SriLankan flights to Gan Island in the Maldives via the latter’s Colombo hub. Cirium’s schedules data shows that Qatar flies four times daily between Doha and Colombo, with a mixture of Airbus A350-900s and Boeing 777s. SriLankan flies 11 times weekly between both cities, with its A330s and A320 family aircraft.

Air Namibia resolves all disputes with Belgium's Challengair Air Namibia (SW, Windhoek Int'l) revealed in a statement dated December 18 that all litigation matters between it and the estate of defunct Belgian carrier Challengair (1I, Brussels National) had been ―amicably resolved‖. The statement seen by ch-aviation said that a Deed of Settlement regarding all disputes, whether in Namibia or in Europe, had been executed. Challengair began seizing funds belonging to Air Namibia in January, as it sought to fulfil European court rulings in its favour. The statement said that ―all attachment orders of Air Namibia assets issued in line with the German court directives are to be suspended per the Deed of Settlement entered into, which will enable Air Namibia to trade normally going forward.‖ It added: ―We extend our sincere appreciation and thanks to all parties including the Air Namibia-appointed legal team and the local representatives of Challengair for their meticulous efforts in resolving a very complex matter.‖ Challengair was awarded EUR25 million euro (USD29 million) by courts in Paris (in 2011) and Munich (in 2015) as compensation for outstanding debts owed by Air Namibia for services such as maintenance, leasing dues, and insurance premiums that were part of a failed 1998 wet-lease agreement. On January 4, 2019, Commerzbank in Germany seized approximately USD600,000 worth of funds from the state-owned carrier, then a further USD224,000 on January 21. By June, Air Namibia was experiencing severe cashflow problems as a result of the action. In late July, the Namibian High Court ruled that Belgian lawyer Anicet Baum, who has represented the estate of Challengair, could represent the company in a Namibian court. Baum proceeded to institute legal action in the Namibian courts to officially recognise and enforce the award. A letter penned at the end of August by Deidré Sauls-Deckenbrock, the airline's then-chairwoman, requested the country's government to provide NAD1.6 billion (USD109 million at the time) in emergency financial support, local media reported. She added that Air Namibia wanted to resolve its longstanding dispute with Challengair and requested that it seek settlement negotiations.

Nigerian CAA orders Turkish Airlines to upgrade aircraft In order to avert the suspension of its Nigerian routes, Turkish Airlines (TK, Istanbul New) has agreed to upgrade the aircraft being used on its services to the country's capital city Abuja. According to Nigerian news outlet Punch, airline representatives met with the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) in Abuja earlier this month where the carrier pledged to return all baggage of Nigeria-bound passengers which had been left in Turkey. The day before the meeting, the Nigerian Federal Government had ordered the suspension of Turkish Airlines' flights due to "repeated cases of poor passenger treatment," said a NCAA spokesperson. According to the ch-aviation schedules module, the airline currently flies to Lagos daily with a mixture of A330-200s and A330-300s, while its 3x weekly services to Port Harcourt Omagwa are operated by B737-900(ER)s, and as a result of the equipment used and their respective bigger payloads neither of these routes would seemingly be at issue here. It is Turkish Airlines' flights to the capital Abuja, which are scheduled to operate 5x weekly by B737-800s and only 2x weekly by B737-900(ER)s that seem to have been the troubled flights. "At the end of the meeting, the airline's executives pledged to commence immediately freight of all leftover passengers' baggage back in Turkey. According to them, this will be achieved by instantly upgrading the B737-800 being used and found inadequate, to a larger A330 and B737-900." The airline said the flights would take place between December 13 and 17. Referring to ADS-B data from Flightradar24, each flight has so far been upgauged on services between December 13 and December 16: December 13 - A330-300 used to replace B737-800; December 14 - B737-900(ER) used to replace B737-800; December 15 - B737-900(ER) used to replace B737-800; December 16 - A330-300 used to replace B737-900(ER).

1 BOEING 777X MOVES TOWARDS FIRST FLIGHT The Boeing 777X is moving toward the first flight, which is expected early next year. These new pictures from @mattcawby reveal the rapid progress of the installation of the upgraded GE9X engines. The engines which arrived back in October from GE incorporate improvements to fix durability problems that were unearthed late in the engine test program this summer. The issue, centred on the stator vanes in the compressor and forced Boeing to delay the start of flight tests of the 777-9 from July 2019 to early 2020. Deliveries of the Boeing 777X are delayed till early 2021. The aircraft combines the best features of the current 777 with a longer and wider internal fuselage, new engine and the composite wing design from the Boeing 787. It also features 20 per cent larger windows and has lower pressurization altitude to reduce jet lag. WATCH: Amazing thermal video of Boeing 757 landing The 777-9X seats more than 400 passengers, depending on an airline’s configuration choices. With a range of more than 8,200 nautical miles (15,185 km), the aircraft will have the lowest operating cost per seat of any commercial aircraft says, Boeing. The second member of the family, the 777-8X, will be the most flexible jet in the world claims Boeing. The aircraft will seat 350 passengers and offer a range capability of more than 9,300 nautical miles (17,220 km). The driving force behind the aircraft is Emirates President Sir Tim Clark, whose airline is the lead buyer with an order for 126. This order was orginally 150, however at last month’s Dubai Air Show the airline exercised substitution rights and converted 24 Boeing 777X aircraft into 30 787-9s. HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Emirates Chairman and Chief Executive said: ―I am pleased to announce firm order for 30 Boeing Dreamliners

1 3 investors eye AirZim Martin Kadzere Senior Business Reporter AIR Zimbabwe has completed adjudication of bids submitted by three investors that have expressed interest in acquiring shares in the struggling State-owned airline. Assistant administrator Tonderai Mukubvu of Grant Thornton told The Herald Finance and Business in an interview that a comprehensive report would be submitted to the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure Development for consideration. AirZim was placed under administration in October last year in an effort to revive its fortunes. Initially, 10 international investors had expressed willingness to acquire a shareholding in the troubled national flag carrier, but only three eventually submitted bids. ―The process of adjudication is complete now; we have made our recommendations based on the bids that we received and also the business models that we think can help turnaround the airline. By end of this week, we will submit our reports to the ministry,‖ said Mr Mukubvu. He, however would not be drawn to disclose the three potential suitors citing confidentiality. The troubled airline, which owes foreign and domestic creditors millions of dollars, is among State-owned entities, which also include telecoms operators NetOne and TelOne; Chemplex and POSB, that the Government listed for privatisation. Air Zimbabwe is operating with a single plane (Boeing 737-200), mainly servicing Harare-Bulawayo and Victoria Falls routes, as well as Harare-Johannesburg and Harare-Dar es Salaam regional routes. It has two Airbus A320-200, two Boeing 767200, two Boeing 737-200, British Aerospace 146-200 and an Embraer ERJ-145, which are grounded due to functional deficiencies. Air Zimbabwe has a staff complement of over 232 employees being the total number of active employees at its Harare base, local out stations and regional offices. It has maintained a large staff headcount despite a depleted fleet. Last month, Transport and Infrastructure Development Minister Joel Matiza, said a Malaysian firm had cleared the release of two aircraft acquired by Air Zimbabwe. Delivery of the planes is expected before year end. The two Boeing 777-200 ER are part of four planes national airline intends to ‫والمراسم‬ ‫العامة‬ ‫للعالقات‬ ‫العامة‬the ‫االدارة‬ buy. Last year, Government, entered into an agreement ‫لمصر للطيران‬ ‫القابضة‬ ‫ الشركة‬to acquire aeroplanes from Malaysia for US$70 million.

2 Air Zimbabwe is also finalising regulatory issues to start flying the Embraer ERJ145 purchased from the US. The plane was delivered in April this year. The 50-seater jet has to go through the local registration process as well as all mandatory checks, tests and certification before it is put into service, the Air Zimbabwe administrator said. The aircraft is expected to mostly service local and regional routes. Improved air connectivity is critical to Zimbabwe at a time the southern Africa country is on the drive to attract foreign direct investment as well as enhance tourist arrivals. Other regional airlines have taken advantage of improved tourist arrivals, particularly in Victoria Falls following the upgrade and expansion of Victoria Falls International Airport. This also comes at a time Harare is upgrading Robert Mugabe International Airport, which will include expansion of the international terminal building and aprons, installation of four new air bridges, a secondary radar system, the airfield ground lighting system, the communication systems and construction of a VVIP pavilion and new satellite fire station. Once complete, the airport will have an additional capacity, connectivity and resilience to handle another 3,5 million passengers annually with improved service, making the airport a strong contender for the much-coveted regional aviation hub status in southern Africa, for which Zimbabwe is geographically well-positioned to capitalise on. Observers say it appears that geographically, Zimbabwe is more strategically suited to be the hub for Southern and Central Africa compared to its regional peers. And so investors can imagine the benefits from all major flights into the region routing through Zimbabwe first, and then connecting to Johannesburg, Nairobi, Addis Ababa, or Kampala!

Black partners in SAA business rescue to be announced soon - Mthembu Minister in the Presidency Jackson Mthembu told reporters on Tuesday morning that Cabinet was confident in the business rescue processes announced at South African Airways, and that equity partners in the business rescue would be announced soon. Mthembu was briefing reporters in Pretoria on the outcomes of last week's Cabinet meeting. The Cabinet meeting followed the national flag carrier being placed into business rescue in early December, following a bruising strike and amid difficulty meeting its financial obligations. Les Matuson was appointed the national carrier's business rescue practitioner.

Subscribe to Fin24’s newsletter here Mthembu said on Tuesday that Cabinet expressed confidence that the intervention would re-position the flag carrier to become a stronger, more competitive entity, which would win back confidence from investors and its passengers. "Cabinet welcomed the appointment of the business rescue practitioner Les Matuson from Matuson Associates. He will work with the black partners that will be announced in due course," said Mthembu. READ: Court dismisses Myeni's bid to have Outa withdraw from delinquency case Mthembu reminded reporters that SAA would receive an additional R2bn in financial assistance from government to help restructure the airline, over and above the existing R2bn from SAA lenders. "Cabinet is confident that this intervention will restore the reputation of the airline and prevent the collapse which would have had a negative impact on passengers, suppliers and other partners in the aviation sector and, importantly, the workforce," Mthembu said. Mthembu said Minister of Public Enterprises Pravin Gordhan would report to Cabinet regularly on progress made in the business rescue process. Matuson, menawhile, in a statement earlier in the month, said his team would "immediately begin consultations with all affected persons and stakeholders and intend to communicate more fully in due course‖. 1 Boeing will suspend 737 Max production in January Boeing is planning to suspend production of the 737 Max after regulators said they don’t plan to lift a flight ban this year. The planes have been grounded since mid-March after two fatal crashes. The company isn’t planning to lay off or furlough employees at its plant in Renton, Washington.

Boeing is planning to suspend production of its beleaguered 737 Max planes next month, the company said Monday, a drastic step after the Federal Aviation Administration said its review of the planes would continue into next year, dashing the manufacturer’s forecast. Boeing’s decision to temporarily shut down production, made after months of a cash-draining global grounding of its best-selling aircraft, worsens one of the most severe crises in the history of the century-old manufacturer. It is ramping up pressure on CEO Dennis Muilenburg, whom the board stripped of his chairmanship in October as the crisis wore on. The measure is set to ripple through the aerospace giant’s supply chain and broader economy. It also presents further problems for airlines, which have lost hundreds of millions of dollars and canceled thousands of flights without the fuel-efficient planes in their fleets. Boeing said it does not plan to lay off or furlough workers at the Renton, Washington, factory where the 737 Max is produced during the production pause. Some of the 12,000 workers there will be temporarily reassigned. service are done only with safety in mind.‖

‫االدارة العامة للعالقات العامة والمراسم‬ ‫الشركة القابضة لمصر للطيران‬

2 ―Today’s Boeing announcement is a body blow to its workers and the region’s economy,‖ said Rep. Rick Larsen, a Democrat from Washington, where Boeing makes the Max. ―The only saving grace is the Boeing leadership has promised not to lay off any workers. I am ready to work with Boeing workers to ensure they are protected and that they will have access to the necessary resources in the event of a prolonged shutdown.‖ ―In the meantime, the FAA should continue to emphasize that safety is the guiding principle for any return to service decision for the 737 MAX. The MAX is a great airplane and will be in use for many years, but the best decision for the long-term and for the workers at Boeing is ensuring the necessary changes needed to put the plane back in service are done only with safety in mind. Boeing last week acknowledged that regulators’ review of the planes — grounded since March after two crashes killed 346 people — would last until the following year, longer than the end-of-year approval the Chicago-based manufacturer was targeting. Just how long Boeing will keep its 737 Max production line halted was not immediately clear, because it will depend on when regulators clear the plane to fly again. U.S. airlines have taken the planes out of their schedules until at least March. American last week said it doesn’t expect to fly the planes before April. ―We know that the process of approving the 737 Max’s return to service, and of determining appropriate training requirements, must be extraordinarily thorough and robust, to ensure that our regulators, customers, and the flying public have confidence in the 737 Max updates,‖ Boeing said in a statement. ―The FAA and global regulatory authorities determine the timeline for certification and return to service. We remain fully committed to supporting this process. It is our duty to ensure that every requirement is fulfilled, and every question from our regulators answered.‖ Boeing had repeatedly warned investors that it could further cut or suspend production of the planes altogether if the flight ban lasts longer than expected, as it has. Boeing slashed production by 20% in April to 42 a month after ‫والمراسم‬ ‫العامة‬flying ‫للعالقات‬ ‫االدارة‬ regulators ordered airlines to stop the‫العامة‬ planes.
