IATA Introduces I-ASC Survey to Enhance Safety through a Safety Culture Geneva – The International Air Transport Association (IATA) launched the IATA Aviation Safety Culture (I-ASC) survey to support airlines in the implementation of Safety Management Systems (SMS) and building a strong safety culture in compliance with the recently upgraded standards and recommended practices (SARPS) of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). ICAO safety management SARPS are contained in Annex 19, Safety Management, of the Convention on International Civil Aviation. In July 2016, Annex 19 was amended to strengthen safety management SARPs by requiring airlines(1) to develop and promote a positive Safety Culture. This requirement must be met by November 2019. "Safe operations are underpinned by a safety-centric culture. I-ASC enables airlines to benchmark their performance on safety culture. In doing so, it feeds into the important process of continuous improvement that has helped to make flying the safest form of longdistance travel," said Gilberto Lopez Meyer, IATA's Senior Vice President, Safety and Flight Operations. The existence and understanding of an airline's safety culture is a prerequisite for successful and effective SMS implementation. I-ASC assists this process with objective self-assessment, leading to understanding and action. Virgin Australia was one of the early adopters of the I-ASC survey and Michael Chapman, Virgin Australia's General Manager Safety Systems said: "The I-ASC survey was really useful to allow us to review our results across different departments within our own business, as well as compare ourselves against others within the industry."

Established by the Council of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), GASeP, seeks to address closer inter-government cooperation to eliminate the long-term challenges of extraterritorial measures. GASeP also aims to address the universal application of global safety standards, improve sharing of information among governments and industries, as well as optimise implementation of new and existing technologies in the aviation sector. ”Governments must incorporate GASeP into their national plans and cooperate through ICAO to make sure that the global system works.“ IATA director general and CEO Alexandre de Juniac said: ”Flying is secure, but it is also clear that aviation faces security challenges. ”GASeP has the potential to strengthen security globally by providing governments with a global plan to which they can align their national efforts. ”The critical factor is implementation. It must be quick, comprehensive and global.“ In addition, GASeP creates a framework for states to include ICAO’s standards and recommended practices (SARPs) for aviation security, which is mentioned in Annex 17 of the Chicago Convention. de Juniac added: ”We have great expectations for GASeP. African aviation needs $150bn for aircraft acquisition- AfDB The President African Development Bank (AfDB) Dr. Akinwumi Adesina has charted the course for Africa's aviation sector growth as he painted a grimy picture over the challenges that lie ahead. The AfDB president also said African aviation needs financing with about $150 billion needed in aircraft acquisition financing alone. The AfDB president gave the indication in Abuja while speaking at the International Civil Aviation Organization' (ICAO) third International World Aviation Forum (IWAF3). Dr. Adesina also said the way the present Africa's aviation architecture is constructed, its difficult for the industry to growth adding that african countries must make air interconnectivity seamless. "Africa needs to procure about 970 jets and 700 turboprops over the next 20 years. Financing needs will exceed $150 billion! African aviation needs fleet modernization, efficiencies, better connectivity and much improved quality of services for an exponential growth in the number of passengers" he said. Accord to him, "the fact is, Africa faces much higher costs for aircraft purchases due to the relatively small size of most airlines, weak balance sheets for corporate loans, a lack of access to export credit agreements, higher insurance costs, inability of commercial banks to provide long term financing, and very high interest rates when they do." The National Centre for Security Operations at the Ministry of the Interior said that 10,902 calls were received by "911" operations in Makkah from the beginning of the rain until noon on Tuesday. The centre said that most of the calls were to enquire about the roads and streets that could be used for traffic. It added that the Civil Defence dealt with 241 rescue cases and that three men who were trapped inside Al Salam Tunnel were rescued. Classes suspended School and university classes in the Makkah region were suspended on Tuesday due to severe weather conditions, the General Directorate of Education announced in a tweet. Meanwhile, the King Abdulaziz International airport in Jeddah has also announced on Tuesday that delays may be expected in both inbound and outbound flights due to inclement weather. Passengers were told to contact airline companies for more information.

Airbus A350-1000 gains EASA & FAA certifications The Airbus A350-1000 has gained both EASA and FAA type certifications, the manufacturer announced Tuesday. Type certification of the widebody Nov. 21 came almost one year after the aircraft’s first flight. Airbus expects to deliver the first A350-1000 to launch customer and operator Qatar Airways before the end of this year. The first aircraft is in the final assembly line and will be transferred to the flight line in early December. The A350-1000 test program comprised 1,600 hours and involved three aircraft. Around 150 flight hours were dedicated to route proving in an operating environment typical for airlines. Airbus A350 chief engineer Alain de Zotti said all performance targets were met or exceeded. The aircraft also remained within its weight specification, unlike early versions of the A350-900, the first A350 variant to enter service. Airbus has 169 firm orders from 11 customers for the -1000. There are 681 orders for the smaller A350-900, 122 of which had been delivered by the end of October.
