https://www.ainonline.com South Africa’s Airlink, Safair to Merge by Gregory Polek) South African airlines Airlink and Safair plan to apply to the country‘s completion commission on Tuesday for approval to merge under the Airlink group of companies. The proposal calls for Airlink and Safair‘s various businesses, including low-fare carrier FlySafair and humanitarian aid operations, to continue to operate separately under their own brands. Plans call for the airlines to retain their respective fleets and leadership teams, and the companies promise no job losses as a result of the consolidation. Meanwhile, Safair shareholder ASL Aviation Holdings—a global aviation group whose financial interests also include six European and two Asian airlines--will become a minority shareholder of the Airlink group of companies. ―Airlink‘s acquisition of Safair, which is financially robust and profitable, makes good business sense,‖ said Airlink CEO Rodger Foster. ―It presents opportunities to reduce our combined costs, position ourselves for growth while at the same time increasing connectivity and choice while making air travel accessible and affordable for our customers across Southern Africa...Our combined networks will enable us to connect 37 destinations in nine Southern African and Indian Ocean countries and St. Helena. This will stimulate and enable trade, tourism, economic growth and social development in those markets we serve.‖ Perhaps more important, the companies expect the merger create more effective economies of scale by allowing them to share costs and remove systems duplication, according to Safair CEO Elmar Conradie. The competition commission has indicated it would hand down its final determination during next year‘s first quarter. Established in 1992, Airlink ranks as the largest regional airline in Southern Africa, maintaining a route network of 37 destinations in nine African countries and St. Helena with a fleet of 33 Embraer ERJ-145-family jets, eight Jetstream 41 turboprops and 12 Avro RJ85s, all of which it expects to replace with Embraer E-Jets by the end of 2019. Safair launched FlySafair in 2014 to serve South Africa‘s domestic market, where it flies low-fare services with three Boeing 737-800s, six 737-400s and two 737-400 cargo jets.

Accounts For 37% Of Global Aviation Fatalities‘ By The Tide President, African Development Bank (AfDB), Dr Akinwumi Adesina, says the African aviation sector accounts for about nine per cent of aircraft accidents yearly and 37 per cent of Aviation fatalities globally. He said this while speaking with newsmen in Abuja, and added that though the sector fared better in 2016, it still remained the riskiest skies to fly in. He said the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by the bank and the International Air Transport Association (IATA) was to seek ways to boost the African aviation sector to better serve the teeming populace. ―First is, we are very concerned about the issue of air safety. ―Africa, last year, did very well. It was one of the safest skies last year but it has not always been that way, so we are improving but that does not mean that we must actually rest on our oars on this. ―So one of the things that we will be focusing on in the collaboration with IATA is how to improve investments from the bank and others on air navigation infrastructure, improving safety records and also making sure that we also improve the training facilities for the engineers, the air control traffic managers. ―We are also looking at how to help to de-risk the market for accessing finance for infrastructure, in particular, air craft acquisition. ―So these are the broad terms of the things that we are going to be working on but our focus is to make the aviation industry more competitive; deregulate the sector and make it more efficient. ―Hopefully, also have financing that allows aircraft expansion to be able to cope with the rapidly increasing number of passengers that Africa needs and would have,‘‘ Adesina said. The MoU was signed on Tuesday in Abuja, on the sidelines of the International Civil Aviation Organisation‘s (ICAO) World Aviation Forum. The forum is themed: ―Financing the Development of Aviation Infrastructure.‖

atwonline.com South African carriers Airlink, FlySafair reach merger agreement Aaron Karp Johannesburg-based Airlink, the largest regional airline in southern Africa, and Cape Town-based Safair, parent of LCC FlySafair, have entered into a merger agreement under which Safair will be acquired by Airlink. Safair is wholly owned by Dublin-based ASL Aviation Holdings, which will become a minority shareholder in Airlink following the merger. Airlink, FlySafair and Safair‘s other businesses, including humanitarian aid and cargo flights, will retain their brands, aircraft fleets and management teams after the merger, which the companies said would not result in any job losses. The two companies will submit their merger plan to South Africa‘s Competition Commission Nov. 28 for approval and anticipate a decision during the 2018 first quarter. Airlink CEO Rodger Foster said in a statement that the merger is being pursued to take advantage of ―opportunities to reduce our combined costs, position ourselves for growth while at the same time increasing connectivity.‖ He added: ―Our combined networks will enable us to connect 37 destinations in nine southern African and Indian Ocean countries and St. Helena. This will stimulate and enable trade, tourism, economic growth and social development in those markets we serve.‖ Safair CEO Elmar Conradie said the merger ―will create economies of scale that will enable both airlines to share costs, optimize assets and remove systems duplications.‖ Airlink operates a fleet of nearly 60 aircraft including Embraer E190s, Avro RJ85s, ERJ 135LRs, Jetstream 4100s and Cessna 208B Grand Caravan EX aircraft. Earlier this year it took delivery of an E190, the first of 13 E190/E170s it has on order; those E-Jets will eventually replace all of the carrier‘s 12 Avro RJ85s. FlySafair operates a fleet of 11 aircraft, a combination of Boeing 737400s and 737-800s.

http://www.africanbusinessreview.co.za/ Jambojet expects to launch Uganda and Tanzania flights in February The subsidiary of Kenya Airways, Jambojet, is on track for initiating two new flight journeys by February 2018. The budget airline recently announced its regional expansion strategy, including receiving two new Bombardier Q400 planes, in order to fly to 16 new routes. The Transport Ministry has applied for permission to fly to new countries on behalf of the airline. Jambojet was granted approval to travel to Entebbe, Addis Ababa, Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar, Kilimanjaro, Mwanza, Kigali, Juba, Bujumbura, Hargeisa, Mogadishu, Goma, Kisangani and Moroni, Tanzania, and Uganda. ―The government has applied for designations on our behalf to allow us operate on six regional routes,‖ said Willem Hondius, Chief Executive of Jambojet, according to Business Daily. ―For now, the application covers Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, Ethiopia and Democratic Republic of Congo. However, we intend to begin by flying to Tanzania and Uganda.‖ The company expect to also start flights to Wajir, north east Kenya, by February, expanding its domestic flight routes. During the electioneering period, Jambojets‘s bookings fell around 16%, according to Mr Hondius. The carrier has between approximately 45,000 and 50,000 passengers per month. ―The loss was attributable to last year‘s peak season when insufficient aircraft messed us up. The elections affected us negatively this year. While business has rebounded, we shall assess the full impact with time,‖ said Mr Hondius.

Indian expats flying from Dubai to Mumbai land without baggage Air India says baggage of some passengers offloaded due to payload restriction Dubai: A group of Indian expats, who flew on a Dubai-Mumbai flight on Sunday night, landed in India without their baggage arriving. The passengers of Air India, some of whom were to catch connecting flights to other destinations, complained that the airline ruined their holidays by offloading their baggage without notification. According to passengers, the flight AI 984 took off one and a halfhour late after they had boarded the flight. ―We didn‘t know what was happening. We could see they were taking out some bags,‖ said a passenger who did not wish to be named. He said the pilot, who got down and spoke with some officials, came back and announced there were some fuelling issues. ―He said it will take another 20-25 minutes. They did not even offer water to us. When people asked them for water, the hostesses arranged for some bottles. But some people didn‘t get even that.‖ More trouble was in store when the aircraft landed in Mumbai. Passengers waited for a long time for their baggage, said another passenger. ―We were shocked when we got only one of our bags with gifts. The other bag which had all our clothes and other stuff did not reach Mumbai,‖ said frustrated passenger Vaneesha Noronha. Because of the delay and non-arrival of her baggage, she said she and her husband missed a connecting flight to Jaipur where they had booked a holiday package.

2 http://gulfnews.com/ The Dubai-based HR supervisor said around 50 passengers did not receive their bags at the carousel. ―The worst part was that we were not informed about the baggage getting offloaded and we were not given any refreshments either on board or after landing.‖ According to her, the affected passengers included a bride-to-be from Nasik. ―She was so harrowed because everything needed for her wedding was in the bag that didn‘t come.‖ When Gulf News spoke to Air India, an official confirmed that the airline had to offload the baggage of some passengers. ―That was because of a payload issue. Things were beyond our control. We were informed about the payload problem after the passengers boarded and we were asked to offload the baggage of some passengers,‖ the official said. He claimed that the airline had properly informed the passengers about some of the baggage reaching them late. ―Our Mumbai colleagues are taking care of the passengers. We have already sent some of the baggage with Jet Airways and IndiGo flights. The rest are going by the Air India Express flight tonight,‖ the official said

JAL, Aeroflot to code-share flights, cooperate on mileage Japanese carrier widening its network beyond Oneworld alliance TOKYO -- Japan Airlines is forging a partnership with Aeroflot Russian Airlines that will begin with code-share flights and possibly shared mileage programs, and might evolve into closer cooperation, JAL announced Monday. Details will be ironed out later, but JAL said the code-share flights would begin in or after fiscal 2018 for Tokyo-Moscow flights and for the two airlines' respective domestic routes. Travel between Japan and Russia has been on the rise since January 2017, when visa requirements were relaxed, and the traffic will only increase as economic relations between the two nations pick up. JAL and Aeroflot will cooperate to offer flights. The two airlines now fly into different airports in Moscow, so to make transfers more convenient for passengers they will look into using the same airport. In the future, the companies may take the next step beyond code-share and forge a closer partnership by adjusting their flights and schedules. Aeroflot is part of the SkyTeam alliance, whereas JAL is part of the Oneworld alliance. Code-share and mileage program cooperation typically are features of airlines that belong to the same alliance, but JAL is keen to broaden its flight network and is willing to look beyond its alliance to do so as effectively as possible. Aeroflot is just the most recent example of this strategy, as JAL is already making partnerships outside Oneworld with the Southeast Asian budget carrier Vietjet Air, the U.S. carrier Hawaiian Airlines and Mexico's flag carrier Aeromexico.
