1 Blue Air Set To Retire All Boeing 737 Classic Aircraft Next Year

Bucharest based low-cost airline Blue Air is six months into the rein of its new CEO. Oana Petrescu gave an interview at the recent IATA Wings of Change Europe conference, where she outlined her plans for fleet renewal at the airline, as well as some of its goals for the future

Turning Blue Air around CEO of Blue Air, Oana Petrescu, is proving to be a breath of fresh air for Blue Air. Having joined as CFO in January 2018, she was appointed as CEO just over a year later, in May this year. Coming from a less than typical background, with a history of finance and IT, Oana is living proof that sometimes an airline needs a fresh take on its operations in order to become profitable. During her interview at the recent IATA Wings of Change Europe conference, she spoke of how she‟d turned things around at the airline, and what a bright future she sees ahead. Through strategic cost cutting and slimming of routes and capacity, the airline ended September with a profit of €8.9m ($9.9m) for the year, a stark change from the €19m ($20m) loss the year before.

2 The Blue Air fleet Blue Air is a wholly 737 based operator. Its current fleet numbers 23, split between 12 737-800s and 11 737 Classics. Of the Classics, the airline has three -300s, two -400s and six -500s. These average 30.9, 28.2 and 28.8 years old respectively. Six of these aircraft are marked as being „stored‟; as Oana said, they are not in use for the winter season. These include three of the -500s, one of the 400s and two -300s Blue Air‟s Classics frequently have a colorful background. YR-BAC, a -300 that is the oldest in the fleet at 33.3 years, has a history that includes Ansett Australia and Air Vanuatu. YR-AMC, a 28 year old -500, began life with Lufthansa, and YR-BAF, a 30 year old -500 is an ex United Airlines 737. Originally, Blue Air had expected to receive the first of its 737 MAX 8s earlier this year. They were to be delivered at a rate of two per year, so at least two should have been in the fleet by now. This would have enabled Blue Air to retire at least a couple of its Classics already, but it looks like the carrier is holding on to these to fill in until the MAX returns to service and arrives in the fleet. A bright future ahead Oana went on to outline the future as she sees it for Blue Air. She highlights the expansive growth in the Romanian economy as a highlight of the coming year. The nation is anticipated to see growth of 8 – 10% over 2020, a higher GDP growth than any other European nation. All this growth means more disposable income for the communities her airline serves. Domestic as well as international is a strong market for Blue Air, with poor or no connectivity by road and rail for the geographically large country of Romania.

1 WOW: Volcanic Eruption Causes 11 Hour KLM Flight To Nowhere A KLM flight from Amsterdam to Mexico City yesterday was forced to make a diversion. However, despite already being over North America, the aircraft returned to Amsterdam, meaning an 11-hour flight to nowhere for passengers. The diversion was prompted by a volcanic eruption affecting Mexico City.

A volcanic eruption in Mexico forced a KLM Boeing 747 to make an 11-hour flight to nowhere

At Simple Flying, we‟ve seen a number of impressive entries for “longest flight to nowhere”. These flights typically occur when an aircraft needs to divert, but the issue is not serious enough to prompt an immediate landing. Sometimes this can be a fault detected on takeoff necessitating returning right away, or in the case of the KLM flight, it‟s flying to North America and back. What happened? So what exactly happened with flight KL685 yesterday? Operated by a Boeing 747, registered as PH-BFT, KLM flight 685 was due to depart from Amsterdam at 14:35 CET. The flight, however, did not get airborne until 15:06, around half an hour behind schedule. Once airborne, the aircraft proceeded to start its flight as would be expected, climbing to around 30,000 feet before cruising across the Atlantic.

‫االدارة العامة للعالقات العامة والمراسم‬ ‫الشركة القابضة لمصر للطيران‬

2

At around 20:30 CET, the aircraft had been flying for five and a half hours. It was at this point that the aircraft turned around and began to fly back to Amsterdam. Following its diversion, the aircraft touched down at the Dutch flag carriers home at approximately 02:15 CET the next day. Why return to Schipol? So why did the aircraft return to Schipol? The whole diversion was prompted by a volcanic eruption in Mexico. As a result of the volcanic eruption, it was realized that the aircraft wouldn‟t be able to make it to its intended destination, Mexico City. Aircraft avoid clouds of volcanic ash, as the small particles can destroy engines and make seeing outside almost impossible. This is why such widespread disruption was caused when huge amounts of volcanic ash blew across to Europe from Iceland‟s Eyjafjallajökull volcano in 2010. The pilots were faced with a decision. While they could‟ve chosen to divert to a stop nearby, they also had enough fuel to return to Schipol. So that‟s what they did! The pilots chose to return to Amsterdam for two reasons. Firstly, the visa requirements of the passengers meant that landing in the United States or Canada would be impractical unless essential. Secondly, however, the aircraft also had a large cargo of live horses onboard, which presumably could‟ve experienced issues diverting

1 American Airlines Lays On Extra Flights Following Thanksgiving American Airlines is just over halfway into its prolific Thanksgiving schedule. The airline expects that, by the end of the two week holiday season, it will have carried some 8.6 million passengers. And it‟s deployed some pivotal strategies to help manage demand.

American Airlines has scheduled more flights and introduced more aircraft for Thanksgiving.

8.6 million passengers in two weeks When American Airlines entered the Thanksgiving season, it came prepared. The airline has been able to offer its passengers a host of new technology including biometric boarding, electronic voucher systems, and delayed baggage notifications. It‟s also made some crucial aircraft and scheduling decisions to support a smooth operation. Allowing and anticipating nearly a third of all Thanksgiving passengers to travel with its airline, American has brought in widebody assistance. American Airlines normally use these aircraft for long-haul routes or to connect its hub cities. But, during the Thanksgiving period, the air carrier is using the widebodies to facilitate the passenger rush. For example, it‟s using aircraft such as the Boeing 787 Dreamliner on routes to Phoenix. In fact, Phoenix Sky Harbour International Airport will receive nearly every widebody aircraft that American Airlines has at some point before the 3rd of December. Las Vegas will also be another airport that sees more widebodies than normal.

‫االدارة العامة للعالقات العامة والمراسم‬ ‫الشركة القابضة لمصر للطيران‬

2 American Airlines hasn‟t just laid on the same schedule every day. It‟s anticipating extra traffic on 1st December, the busiest day of Thanksgiving travel. On its route from New York to Los Angeles, the airline will trade its A321 Transcon for a Boeing 777-300ER. As a result, its capabilities for delivering passengers will be almost tripled. Whilst the A321T can carry 102 passengers over three classes, American‟s 777300ER can take 304. That‟s nearly three times the revenue without much skin off American Airlines‟ nose. However, this oversized replacement will only operate one service. The Boeing 777-300ER will be used on the six-hour flight between JFK in New York and Los Angeles International departing at 11 am.

American will be using a Boeing 777-300ER for JFK to LAX flight.

Breaking the red-eye protocol Whilst its ability to fly domestic routes with widebodies is impressive, American Airlines will also be testing its boundaries in other ways. The airline has laid on a number of red-eye flights and not with the normal five hour plus flight times. Instead, the airline will be scheduling night flights for services as short as three hours to ensure families are reunited and commitments are met throughout Thanksgiving.

1 Emirates‟ A380 Year Of Tolerance Flight Sets A World Record Emirates has completed a one-off flight to mark the UAE Year of Tolerance today, and the flight has broken a Guinness World Record. Operating as EK2019, the flight lasted just 90 minutes but contained the most nationalities ever recorded on an aircraft. In total, there were 145 nationalities represented on the Airbus A380, which was wearing a very special livery to mark the occasion.

EK2019 had the most nationalities on board of any flight

The flight The special flight was to be operated by an Emirates A380, registered A6-EVB. This is one of the younger A380s in the fleet, having been delivered to Emirates in November 2018. Arriving at the airport, passengers were greeted with a dedicated check-in counter and, of course, plenty of photo ops. Each was given a special celebratory boarding pass, stamped with the EK2019 #yearoftolerance graphic. Every passenger was also invited to write down their name along with their nationality to add to a board celebrating the flight. EK2019 took off at just after 12pm local time today from Dubai (DXB). The entire flight was to last only an hour and a half, returning to Dubai at 13:40. The A380 remained at a low altitude throughout the flight, maintaining just below 7,000 feet for most of the trip. Prior to landing, it raised its altitude to 7,850 feet as it cruised over the Persian Gulf.

The A380 remained at a low altitude throughout the flight, maintaining just below 7,000 feet for most of the trip. Prior to landing, it raised its altitude to 7,850 feet as it cruised over the Persian Gulf. During the flight, the aircraft passed over all seven of the emirates of the UAE, a further nod to togetherness and a feeling of tolerance among those of different backgrounds. At that low altitude, the passengers must have had some amazing aerial views.

1 Turkish Cargo A330 In Collision With Ethiopian Airlines A3 A Turkish Cargo Airbus A330 has collided with an Ethiopian Airlines Airbus A350. The incident happened at Kinshasa-N‟Djili Airport in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

An Ethiopian Airlines Airbus A350 plane was involved with a clash with a Turkish Airlines aircraft today

What happened? The Turkish Cargo A330-200F, registration TC-JOV was in Kinshasa following flight TK6512 from Istanbul. Meanwhile, the Ethiopian A350-900, registration ET-AWO arrived in the DR Congo capital after completing flight ET841 from Addis Ababa. An Ethiopian Airlines employee got in touch and provided this statement: While the TK A-330 was taxing out, its wing hit the tail of the ET A-350 aircraft which “was parked during its regular ground time” Aeronews shared a post by local citizen Magloire Kabwe, which showed images of the collision. The tweet explained that the wing of the Turkish airline aircraft hit the back of the Ethiopian Airlines plane. The close-up images show some minor damage to the outer body of the planes. Altogether, there doesn‟t seem to be any major harm done from what we can see in the photos. However, we hope that any crew and passengers on board are safe. Previous incidents Turkish Cargo is the shipping subsidiary of Turkish Airlines. This is not the first time that the parent company has been involved in an airport collision. In April, a Virgin Atlantic Boeing 787-9 collided with a Turkish Airlines Airbus A340 aircraft at Johannesburg Airport. This resulted in the grounding of both planes.

2 Additionally, The Independent reports that last year, an Asiana A330 began to taxi to take off and collided with the tail of a Turkish Airline A321. Thankfully, no passengers or crew were injured during this incident. Today‟s incident comes a day after the collision of a fuel truck at Dallas-Fort Worth Airport. This resulted in the damage of a couple of American Eagle Bombardier CRJ900s. Both of the planes were preparing for departure at the time before clashing.

Turkish Cargo operates just over a dozen Airbus A330 aircraft for its deliveries.

More about the aircraft Ethiopian is extremely proud of its A350. Earlier this month, the airline celebrated the first flight of the Airbus aircraft type to Toronto. According to Planespotters, it currently holds 13 units of the model within its fleet. The first of these arrived in June 2016 and the latest one came only last month. The carrier also has one more of the planes on order. Meanwhile, Turkish Airlines holds 67 A330s within its fleet. However, only five of these are A330-200Fs. This is the Airbus range‟s all-cargo edition, which is capable of carrying 140,000 lb. Simple Flying reached out to both Ethiopian Airlines and Turkish Airlines for more information about the collision but did not hear back before publication. We will update the article with any further announcements. What do you think about this incident that occurred at Kinshasa-N‟Djili Airport today? Let us know your thoughts in the comment section.

Japan Transocean Air picks ST Engineering for 737 engine support Japan Airlines subsidiary Japan Transocean Air has signed a long-term engine maintenance deal with ST Engineering‟s aerospace unit. The 15-year contract will see ST Engineering provide maintenance-by-thehour support for the airline‟s Boeing 737NG fleet. It includes off-wing maintenance support, on-wing services, as well as technical support, and will be done at ST Engineering‟s engine facilities in Singapore. Japan Transocean Air president Noriyuki Aoki says the agreement builds on the longstanding partnership between the Japan Airlines Group and ST Engineering. “We believe this customised … programme will bring even greater value-add to our business through stability in engine operations in order to provide the highest possible standards in reliability and on-time performance for our customers. Furthermore, it provides us leverage through maintenance cost optimisation and cost control benefits,” he adds. Japan Airlines Group, which already has several long-term maintenance contracts with ST Engineering, owns 70.1% of Japan Transocean Air. Cirium fleets data indicates the latter carrier operates 12 737-800s, all of them powered by CFM56-7B engines.

Tunisair to cut 400 jobs in 2020

Tunisair (TU, Tunis) is expected to layoff 400 of its full-time staff next year, as the national carrier looks to reduce the financial challenges it faces. “As part of a structural reform program, 400 employees will be laid off in 2020 in an effort to reduce the company‟s high wage mass and ease its financial difficulties,” CEO Elyess Mankabi told Reuters. The state-owned airline has been suffering losses since 2011 when Tunisia's President Zine El-Abidine Ben Ali was ousted. Tunisair also faces increased competition, as the country is in the process of ratifying an Open Skies treaty with the European Union. In the past, the government has failed to trim the 8,000 employees at the airline, in the face of union objections. Mankabi's headcount reduction has been approved by the State. The cuts are necessary because the airline has been beset with flight delays, declining services, and aircraft groundings due to a lack of spare parts. According to the ch-aviation PRO airlines and Flightradar24 ADS-B data, Tunisair has two of its four A319-100s inactive at this time, as well as three from its 15-strong A320 fleet, and four of its seven B737-600s unavailable. The airline remains the largest carrier at Tunis, commanding 44% of weekly capacity and 42% of weekly frequencies. With the exception of Transavia France (TO, Paris Orly), Air Arabia (G9, Sharjah) and Air Arabia Maroc (3O, Casablanca Int'l), there is a limited low-cost carrier presence at the capital city airport in the winter. The airline's subsidiary, Tunisair Express (UG, Tunis), took delivery of its first ATR72-600 following the arrival of TS-LBF (msn 1582) in Tunis on November 19.
