United Airlines flight experiences extreme turbulence, „entire flight threw up The flight was en route to Washington Dulles International Airport when it was hit with bad weather from a powerful nor‟easter bringing up to 70 mph winds, rain and snow. (Jet Photos / Creative Commons) A United Airlines flight from Charlottesville, VA, to Washington, D.C., turned into a turbulent nightmare after facing wind gusts of more than 70 miles per hour. The flight was en route to Washington Dulles International Airport when it was hit with bad weather from a powerful nor’easter, bombarding the East Coast with violent winds, torrential rain and snow. The flight – reportedly a Bombardier CRJ200 with a passenger capacity of 50 and crew of three – experienced a rough landing because of the storm, which caused “pretty much every one on the plane” to throw up, according to a pilot’s report. “VERY BUMPY ON DESCENT. PRETTY MUCH EVERY ONE ON THE PLANE THREW UP. PILOTS WERE ON THE VERGE OF THROWING UP,” the pilot’s report to the National Weather Service read. Though the passengers aboard experienced unsettled stomachs on the Friday morning flight, no one required medical attention, according to a United Airlines statement. “Air Wisconsin Flight 3833 operating as United Express from Charlottesville, Va. to Washington Dulles International encountered turbulence because of high winds,” United said in a statement. “A few customers onboard the regional jet became ill as the aircraft was preparing to land. The aircraft landed safely and taxied to its gate. No customers required medical attention because of the turbulence.”

FINAL FLIGHTS D.L. “Whitey” Varney, who built a legacy of safe flying over a 40-year career as a corporate pilot and director of aviation, passed away on January 17 from Alzheimer’s disease. He was 86. Born on April 20, 1931 in Logan, West Virginia, Varney became interested in flying while serving as flight deck director on the USS Kula Gulf in the U.S. Navy in the 1950s. Following his service, he earned a commercial pilot certificate at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and embarked on a career in business aviation in 1957. Over the next four decades, Varney flew as copilot, captain, and chief pilot and served as director of aviation for a number of top corporations, amassing more than 18,000 accident-free flying hours in a range of business aircraft. During his time, he flew CEOs, celebrities, foreign dignitaries, and former U.S. presidents, and was rated on 14 business aircraft. He supported aviation at Allied Chemical, American Can, General Foods, Combustion Engineering, Dun & Bradstreet, National Intergroup, and Coastal Oil. In 1967, Varney helped guide a lost single-engine airplane to safety in poor weather in Wisconsin while piloting his own turboprop. In 1990, he participated in flight operations that involved the successful transport of U.S. American hostages who had been held in Iraq by Saddam Hussein.

‫صورة أرشٌفٌة‬

6 https://www.ainonline.com/ Over his career, Varney had received numerous pilot safety awards from FlightSafety International, as well as from NBAA. In 1974, then Finland President Urho Kekkonen recognized Varney with the Order of the White Rose of Finland and the Order of the Lion. Adam Ashley Klein, who co-founded West Palm Beach, Floridabased Exclusive Charter Service (ECS) in 2004, died on January after a battle with cancer. He was 42. Born July 14, 1975, Klein originally was involved in the technology sector and had run a technology department for an international bank. But an interest in aviation led him to team with Jason Johnson to help found ECS. Through his stewardship, the company has grown into a full-service charter and management firm with seven U.S. locations. Klein, who had taken up flight lessons, was diagnosed with Stage IV stomach cancer in April 2017. A father of two children, he had channeled his experience into fundraising for children’s cancer and was active in charities including the Make-a-Wish Foundation and Angel Flight, among others. Those activities came in addition to ECS’s work in hurricane relief, most recently delivering thousands of pounds of goods to the Caribbean in the wake of the hurricanes that ripped through the region late last summer.

1 http://www.independent.co.uk UK WEATHER LATEST: SNOW AND ICE LEAVE TRAVELLERS STRANDED, FLIGHTS CANCELLED AND TRAINS DELAYED Snow and ice leave travellers stranded, flights cancelled and trains delayed Two BBC broadcasters were stranded abroad and could not present their Saturday programmes 23 hours ago CLICK TO FOLLOW THE INDEPENDENT TRAVEL Thousands of frustrated travellers have endured another day of chaos – with further disruption expected on Sunday as a consequence of the extreme weather. Passengers trying to get away on holiday from Bristol, Birmingham, Edinburgh and other airports found many flights cancelled or delayed. Many easyJet ski flights to Geneva were either cancelled or running several hours late. The budget airline cancelled more than 60 flights to, from and within the UK. At Edinburgh airport, 34 flights were cancelled out of the 215 planned operations. Long delays built up at many airports during the day, with one TUI flight to Gran Canaria from Birmingham 11 hours late. At other airports, some late departures jeopardised onward connections, such as the two-hour delays from Gatwick on Emirates to Dubai, TAP Portugal to Lisbon and Turkish Airlines to Istanbul. A two-hour delay leaving Gatwick for Hurghada in Egypt, blamed on “air traffic control restrictions”, meant the inbound plane diverted to Milan for the crew to be changed, with arrival at 2am on Sunday – more than three hours late. Passengers were told: “We’re sorry your flight is planned to divert to Malpensa today to swap the crew operating your flight before continuing onward to Gatwick.” Passengers using Gatwick on Sunday will find the rail line from London.

closed for scheduled engineering work. Just after 6am, the first flight to arrive at Dublin for nearly two days touched down. The Qatar Airways flight from Doha was followed by several Aer Lingus transatlantic flights, but dozens of departures between the Irish capital and the UK are cancelled for the day. Almost all services to and from Cork airport were cancelled, though some arrivals were diverted to Shannon. Furious passengers complained about the lack of information. Stacey Leeves tweeted: “My partner has been left at Shannon airport! You have NO staff to help at all. “Been trying to get home since Thursday. He’s now getting a coach to Belfast to travel with a different airline.” Aer Lingus responded: “We’re sorry to hear you’ve been left disappointed, Stacey. It’s been challenging over the last few days. “All flights are operating with delays today. Apologies, we can assure you we’re doing what we can to get as many flights away as possible.” Many Ryanair flights between Ireland and the UK were delayed, with some morning services cancelled
