Liberia: Asky Airlines Resume Commercial Flights to Liberia A Pan African Airline, ASKY, has officially resumed flights to Liberia after three years of absence. The Togolese-based airline in partnership with the Ethiopian Airline, touched down at the James Springs Payne Airport on Wednesday, November 1, at 1615 GMT. In flight marked ET-AQF were 60 passengers, including a famous Liberian politician, Dew Tuah Wreh Mason. The Airline suspended its operation in Liberia during the heat of the deadly Ebola Virus Disease in 2014. In early June of 2014 ASKY airline flew several passengers from Liberia including the late Patrick Sawyer, who died as a result of Ebola in Nigeria. Upon her return to Liberia its marketing consultant, Nyema Badio, promised quality service delivery to its many customers. Mr. Badio told newsman at the James Springs Payne Airport that the Airlines is fully ready and prepared to provide comfort to her many customers who will travel with them. "ASKY is here to stay and is advantageous to travelers who drive 45 minutes to the Roberts International Airport (RIA) to travel but using ASKY they could save time and money". Badio asserted that the James Springs Payne Airport will be the only port in the country they will land and takeoff from while operating in Liberia. As evident of her activities in Liberia, ASKY airlines kicked off effective flight Thursday, November 2. It will run daily operations from Lomé, Accra, and Monrovia and from Monrovia via Accra to Lomé that's according to the Mr. Badio. The 60-seated capacity plane flies to about 30 cities including 15 on the continent.

Many of them believe that investing in a national airline will help the government to take the country’s brand and all its potential to the world thereby boosting the growth of tourism. The Chief Executive Officer of Kitari Consult Limited, an aviation consulting firm, Mr. Ali Magashi, recently stated that a national carrier airline as its country’s brand to the world would bring the world into its country and take its country to the world. He said a national airline was like an embassy with wings, transporting its country’s talents, skills, commerce, culture, cuisine, human resource and goodwill around the world. Magashi said, “Conventional wisdom suggests that developing countries with small economies and high growth potential invest in national airlines. Dubai and Singapore have successfully made their airlines their main brands, driving their national identity and growth strategy, and so have Ethiopian Airlines and EgyptAir done here in Africa. “According to the World Bank, every one per cent of government fund spent efficiently on infrastructure leads to an equivalent one per cent growth in Gross Domestic Product. As such, a national carrier airline will help in boosting economic activities and stimulation,” Magashi said. Following the failure of Nigeria Airways Limited which was liquidated in 2004, and the clamour for a new national carrier in some quarters, President Muhammadu Buhari promised a national airline during his campaign for election. Recently, the government in a bid to make good its promise, appointed advisers to help it set up a national airline and develop aviation infrastructure as a way to boost economic growth and make the country a hub in West Africa. The Minister of State for Aviation, Senator Hadi Sirika, said the transaction advisers were a group of six firms including German carrier Lufthansa to advise the government on setting up an airline, an aviation leasing company and a maintenance hanger, and on creating concessions to run the country’s airports, with a funding of $4.99m.

He added, “If we had developed a national carrier, we will not be where we are today. The government must learn to support the industry; all over the world, the government is the biggest supporter of airlines. ADVERTISING “We also need to look critically at infrastructure especially the land and air side. State of the art terminals will not ensure safety. We need to continue to ensure safety regulations without political intervention.” Aviation consultant and Chief Executive Officer of Belujane Konzult, Mr. Chris Aligbe, stated that the government must ensure that the proposed national carrier worked while also supporting domestic airlines to grow. “We need to move ahead with the floatation of a national flag carrier and then give assistance to the domestic airlines. We cannot leave them to keep suffering. Let the government ensure that what we are talking about floating a national carrier will not go the way it has gone before,” he said. Magashi however stated that the government must avoid some of the problems that had worked against the success of the defunct national carrier, such as the lack of political will and sincerity of purpose, vested interest, governance and federal character if the proposed plan must work. For example, a minimum qualification experience of managing an airliner with a minimum of a hundred line airplanes for accountable manager and post holders.” According to him, for the national carrier to succeed, the government must also study model success stories of such airlines all over the world. He said, “We do not need to reinvent the wheel, there are model success stories of national carrier airlines that we can copy. Our government should engage directly with governments of aircraft manufacturers in US, France, Canada and Brazil as the feasibility and business plan will determine. “Nearly all of the recent successful national carrier airlines have a stake in the revenues earned by their airports and related services; they also have targeted tax wavers. In my opinion, we unbundled our aviation ministry and its six agencies too early in the history of our development, and this has created a lot of baggage in personnel and running costs.” He said the proposed airline should be integrated with a very serious supporting maintenance, training and related hospitality services including catering, travel and tourism.

“The government should establish a governing council composed of established aviation and financial statesmen with a directly reporting line to the Presidency, to serve as board of directors to oversee the management and ring fence the whole structure from political interference and vested interests,” he added. While some stakeholders support the idea, there are some who argue that the government should empower indigenous airlines by supporting them and providing them with the platform to grow rather than establishing an airline where the government has stakes. The Chairman and Managing Director of Air Peace Limited, Mr. Allen Onyema, said what the country should work towards having was a flag carrier rather than a national carrier. He said, “We don’t need to kill the domestic airlines to pave way for a national carrier. All over the world, nobody is talking about national carriers. Everywhere in the world, it is about flag carriers. America does not have a national carrier; British Airways is not a national carrier. The idea of a national carrier is moribund and has gone away several decades ago. “Yes, Ethiopian Airlines is a national carrier but all over the world how many national airlines have survived? Alitalia closed down a few years ago; South African Airways is calling for private sector involvement. If a Nigerian airline succeeds in doing international operations, these national airlines in Africa will cease to exist.” According to him, what Nigeria needs is a maintenance facility. He added that Air Peace alone had taken out over $60m in the last two years on maintenance for D and C checks on aircraft. He said, “If that money was domiciled here, imagine what it could do. What we need is a proper maintenance hangar that could do Cchecks not a national carrier. Let the government support airlines that are flying in the name of the country. Flag carriers can equally make their countries proud, floating a national carrier and taking it to a smaller country like Ethiopia for maintenance will be a shame. “The government should also make foreign airlines to codeshare with domestic airlines. That way everyone will benefit from the system.”

Carry TVs for free on Air India, Jet Airways flights from Oman to India Duty on TV at Indian airports would have to be paid Here is exciting news for those travelling to India from Muscat. Now, you can carry televisions up to a maximum size of 48 inches free of charge if you are flying by Air India or Jet Airways.. In a notice to travel agents, Air India said: "We are happy to inform you that it has been decided to waive the charges for carriage of television up to maximum size of 48 inches on Air India flights with effect from today until further notice. This will be considered as free baggage allowance of the passenger and anything over and above free baggage allowance will attract excess baggage charges. "Due to space constraint it is not feasible to carry television beyond the size of 48 inches on Air India flights from Muscat," the airline said, in a circular issued on October 31. A day earlier, a travel agent in Muscat was quoted as saying to Times of Oman that the television set should be in its original packaging to be considered part of Jet Airway's free baggage allowance. According to the Jet Airways website, the current fee for televisions of 1.02 metres (102 cms / 40 inches) and above is OMR 20 and for flights departing from Gulf airports on Boeing 737 aircraft, the maximum acceptable size for LCD / LED TV is 1.22 metres (122 cms / 48 inches), the report said. Jet Airways is also offering 40 kilogramme of free baggage allowance for all guests till December 10, 2017, it pointed out.
