South African Airways Seeks Investor to Revive Its Fortunes New CEO Jarana wants partner for capital, operational savings Plan to merge with other state carriers could also be revived South African Airways will revive a plan to seek an equity partner that’s able to provide cash and operational savings to help turn around the state airline, according to its new chief executive officer. A strategic investor would ideally come from within the aviation industry, CEO Vuyani Jarana, 47, said in an interview at Bloomberg’s Johannesburg office on Monday. That will enable unprofitable SAA to share costs, improve customer service and gain a capital injection, he said. ―You don’t just want a pure investor such as private equity,‖ said Jarana. ―With a strong equity partner that has operations elsewhere, you are able to leverage from each other’s capabilities.‖ A successful search for a new investor would solve the most pressing challenge facing Jarana -- that of putting SAA on a sure financial footing without need of a further government bailout. It’s also a revival of a plan raised by former Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan in his budget speech in February 2016, though the formation of a new board to lead the search was only finalized last month. Jarana, who started Nov. 1, is SAA’s first permanent CEO for more than two years. Swiss Air bought a 20 percent stake in SAA in 1999, only for the South African government to buy it back after the Swiss carrier went bankrupt. SAA is also part of the Star Alliance, a global code-sharing network that includes Deutsche Lufthansa AG and Singapore Airlines. One of SAA’s main strengths is a 55 percent share of the South African market, which also includes contributions from low-cost carrier Mango and SA Express, Jarana said. A merger of the three airlines would help to secure a strong partner, he said, while also contributing to the cost-cutting plan. ―Middle Eastern carriers, we need to refresh the product,‖ Jarana said.

British Airways quick to fill gap left by flight reductions on PE route Just a week after South African Airways (SAA) slashed its flights to Port Elizabeth, another airline has stepped up to fill the gap. British Airways (BA), operated by Comair, added two daily flights between Port Elizabeth and Johannesburg to its roster yesterday. From October 29, SAA reduced its flights on this route from four to two a day. BA spokesman Luane Lavery said the decision to add flights was spurred by increased demand. ―We believe the increased frequency of flights will support the economic and tourism growth in one of the most beautiful and economically important parts of our country,‖ Lavery said The flights will leave Port Elizabeth at 1.25pm and 3.35pm on weekdays. The airline had previously offered five return flights between Port Elizabeth and Johannesburg. The extra flights were welcomed by businesses in the metro. Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber spokeswoman Cindy Preller said: ―For many of our member companies, domestic routes are vital for doing business with other cities and countries.‖ Volkswagen South Africa spokesman Matt Gennrich said: ―We are delighted that British Airways has, unlike SAA, listened to the call by business to have sufficient flights serving the routes that suit not only the local but also the international traveller.‖

Japan Airlines to decide on future widebody orders Japan Airlines (JAL) intends to order more widebody aircraft to meet its growth objectives, although a decision about which type could be some way off. The carrier is discussing its widebody needs, but has not yet reached any internal agreement, said Hideki Oshima, JAL’s executive officer for international relations and alliances.
