American Airlines Just Announced Some Really Bad News For Passengers (It Was Buried Inside the Good News) American Airlines just announced it's buying some new planes. Surely, then, passengers will be delighted that they'll soon enjoy the giddiness of that new plane smell. Well, yes. And, oh, no. Let's start with the good parts. American Airlines is replacing its older, more rickety Boeing 767 planes with 787 Dreamliners. This means, at least, that it's not replacing them with something narrow-bodied and even more narrow-minded than your average CFO. But there were some other parts to this announcement that might make you wince a little. The airline's bullishly cheery CFO, Derek Kerr, offered some insight in a Friday podcast. The airline is delaying delivery of 40 Boeing 737 MAX planes until 2025-26. That's perhaps four years later than planned. These are the planes some regard as maximally uncomfortable, as they squeeze in more seats than ever on a 737. They're also the planes that enjoy bathrooms that are only 75 percent of the size that you're used to. These new bathrooms were recently described by an American Airlines pilot as "the most miserable experience in the world."

‫صورة أرشٌفٌة‬

www.inc.com

2

But wait, I hear you cry, this is surely good news. These uncomfortable planes won't all be in service for a while. Well, now. Kerr explained the decision like this: "Still get the new aircraft coming in. We will replace those other aircraft, but we have some Classics that can fly for longer and so let's put the Oasis in them." Should you not be familiar with Oasis insertion, this represents reducing seat pitch in planes and, yes, shoving in the Most Miserable Experience bathrooms. Ergo, more older planes -- ones that would have been retired -- will now be refurbished to have more seats stuffed in them and, yes, enjoy the same tiny bathrooms as in the MAX. Please, then, chant several stanzas of "Ommmmmm," while you consider the pleasure of older planes now being even more cramped and uncomfortable than they were before. I want, though, to end on an uplifting note, as opposed to considering the notion of squeezing myself into an Economy Class retrofitted seat and not being able to lift myself out of it. So let's celebrate with American Airlines customers in Lima, Peru. They seem to have been described by CEO Doug Parker as being among the airline's least important customers. So Flight Attendants and customers there, who have been complaining about old 767s being flown by American, might -- at least perhaps -- look forward to something shiny and new.

Toddler hit by oxygen tank on American Airlines flight at DFW Airport

American Airlines is investigating after a 1-year-old boy was hit in the head by an oxygen tank that fell from the ceiling during a flight to Dallas-Fort Worth Airport. According to the toddler's mother, 33-year-old Jennifer Zanone, of Denver, the incident occurred on her American Airlines flight AA126 traveling from Hong Kong to DFW around 3:30 p.m. Saturday. Zanone said that upon landing, an entire ceiling panel, including a tank full of oxygen, fell onto the head of her son who was sitting on her lap in seat 35L. She said they were directed to wait for a gate agent to document the incident, but that no one appeared. "We stood there waiting for an agent and our stroller until the captain himself walked off the flight and apologized to us," said Zanone. "After leaving the gate area, we went to the next customer service area to try to report the incident and were given the runaround for an hour and a half. While the apologies were appreciated, documentation of the incident would have been preferred."

In an email statement, American Airlines stated that its flight attendants offered to request medical personnel upon arrival, but that the request was declined by Mrs. Zanone. “American‟s primary concern is for the Zanone family and their young child. Our customer relations team has spoken with Mrs. Zanone to offer additional support and obtain details of what transpired at Dallas/Fort Worth yesterday. Customers trust us to take care of them and we take that responsibility seriously," the statement said. Zanone said she did decline medical assistance, but grew frustrated by what she perceived as a lack of response by the airline after arrival. "We were offered medical assistance immediately following the incident and we did decline because I didn‟t know what the medic could do on site with a jet-lagged, exhausted child so I chose to monitor himself until I could get him back to his own doctor," said Zanone. She said after she posted an image of the fallen ceiling panel to Twitter, the airline responded to her on social media.

Ceiling panel falls on toddler during American Airlines flight to Dallas-Fort Worth

A mother reported that a ceiling panel and oxygen tank fell on her 1-year-old son Saturday during an American Airlines flight from Hong Kong to DFW International Airport. Jennifer Zanone said in a Facebook post that her son was sitting on her lap when the panel fell on landing at the airport. She said she was told a gate agent would document the incident, but no one met her when she stepped off Flight AA126. The captain later walked off the plane and apologized. Zanone said she went to customer service and spent an hour and a half getting "the run around" and made no progress. "While the apologies were appreciated, documentation of the incident would have been preferred as a piece of the plane fell directly on my child's head and that is not ok," she said in the Facebook post. "Fly American Airlines with extreme caution." A photo of the row of seats showed the panel and oxygen masks dangling from the ceiling.

Zanone added Sunday on Facebook that someone from the airline had called her and told her how to learn more about the case. Her son seemed OK, she said, but she was taking him to be checked out to be sure. In an email, the airline said its customer relations team spoke with Zanone to offer additional support and gather more details about the incident. "American's primary concern is for the Zanone family and their young child," the statement said. "Customers trust us to take care of them and we take that responsibility seriously. Our flight attendants offered to request medical personnel meet the aircraft upon arrival at the gate, but that request was declined by Mrs. Zanone." The aircraft was returned to service after being inspected and repaired at DFW Airport.

American Airlines opts for Boeing craft Chicago — American Airlines Group has ordered 47 Boeing 787 Dreamliners for long-range flying, dealing a blow to Airbus‟s ambitions to expand its wide-body aircraft sales in the US. In a related move, American Airlines cancelled an order for 22 of Airbus‟s twin-aisle A350 jets, a purchase placed by predecessor carrier US Airways, according to a statement. The Boeing deal is worth a total of $12.3bn before customary discounts. The move underscores the difficulty Airbus has faced in the US — the largest aviation market and a Boeing stronghold. The Dreamliner deal marks the second time in 2018 that Boeing has convinced an Airbus wide-body customer in the US to switch to the 787. Hawaiian Airlines, the sole customer for Airbus‟s A330800, decided in March to order 10 Dreamliners instead. Adding more of the fuel-efficient Boeing aircraft will allow American Airlines to simplify its fleet and shed some of its oldest long-range jets. Bloomberg had first reported on March 23 that American Airlines had ruled out a competing Airbus bid for the A330neo. "This was a difficult decision between the Boeing 787 and the Airbus A350 and A330neo," Robert Isom, American‟s Airlines president, said in the statement. "In the end, our goal to simplify our fleet made the 787 a compelling choice."

‫صورة أرشٌفٌة‬

2

With the plan, American Airlines will reduce the number of wide-body aircraft types it flies to three from five, reducing maintenance and training costs. American Airlines previously said the number of A350s it had ordered was too small for it to operate profitably. American Airlines already plans to shed another small fleet of 20 Embraer SA E190 jets. American had delayed taking the A350s in 2016 and 2017. The deal includes 22 787-8s, the smallest member of the jet family, and 25 of the 787-9 variant — more than doubling American Airlines‟s fleet of Dreamliners, Boeing‟s most advanced aircraft. All of the new 787s will be powered with General Electric‟s GEnx-1B engines. The 787-8s will begin arriving in 2022, followed a year later by the first of the 787-9s. American Airlines will use the planes to replace ageing Boeing 767-300s and, later, its Airbus A330-300s and the oldest of its Boeing 777-200s. American Airlines also deferred delivery of 40 Boeing 737 Max narrow-body planes to between 2025 and 2026. The aircraft were originally scheduled to arrive in 2020-2022.

Retired Singapore Airlines A380 superjumbo to fly again for Hi Fly The future of the world's largest passenger jet has received a shot in the arm after an aircraft unable to find a home and put into storage nearly six months ago was given a new lease of life. An A380 superjumbo operated by Singapore Airlines was returned to the Dr Peters Group in November who, unable to find another airline to take it, mothballed the plane at a facility in Toulouse. The move was indicative of the struggles of the huge Airbus jet that saw its popularity plummet in the face of smaller, more fuel-efficient aircraft. But this week Hi Fly, a Portuguese leasing airline, announced it would be taking delivery of its first A380, making it the fourth European carrier to operate the doubledecker plane. The serial number of the aircraft has not yet been confirmed but its cabin configuration matches that of the Singapore Airlines aircraft. Hi Fly's decision to take on the jet shows it believes there is still a market for the A380, which seats 525 passengers in a three-class cabin. The charter airline is currently providing a number of carriers, including Norwegian, with cover in the forms of A330 and A340 aircraft after problems with the engines on Boeing's new 787 Dreamliner.

‫صورة أرشٌفٌة‬

2

Hi Fly is taking delivery of its first A380, the world's largest and most spacious airliner," it said in a post on Twitter. "The arrival is a major event for the company, making it the first Portuguese and the fourth European airline operating the model." It posted an image of the A380 in Hi Fly livery, and has said that it plans to fly the A380 with a "truly luxurious" interior. "This acquisition has been part of our company's plans for a while," said president Paulo Mirpuri. "It is a very proud moment forHi Fly." British Airways, Lufthansa and Air France are the only other airlines in Europe to operate the A380. Emirates, Singapore Airlines and Qantas are other key users. The news will be of some relief to Airbus who have spent recent years struggling to secure the future of superjumbo. Last year it looked like the A380 production line could be scrapped as Emirates wavered on an agreement to place a bulk order for the aircraft. The UAE carrier finally committed to purchase 20, with an option for 16 more, in January, in a deal worth up to $21 billion. At one point last year, such was the lacklustre demand for the superjumbo, leasing company Amedeo, which had eight A380s on its books, decided it would launch its own airline because it was unable to find anyone to borrow the planes. The A380's struggles have been well documented in an aviation landscape where carriers have been more keen to invest in second-generation updates of twin-engine aircraft such as the A320neo and 737MAX, as well as smaller, more fuel-efficient aircraft such as the 787 Dreamliner or A350. Industry commentators have long speculated that the A380 programme is on the way out, with many saying that the gargantuan costs of operating such large aircraft were underestimated from the start.

‫صورة أرشٌفٌة‬

http://www.traveller.com.au

3

The Airbus superjumbos currently in service 13 airlines own A380s, with Emirates operating the lion's share China Southern 5 Asiana Airlines 6 Malaysia Airlines 6 Thai Airways 6 Qatar Airways 9 Korean Air 10 Etihad 10 Air France 10 British Airways 12 Qantas 12 Lufthansa 14 Singapore Airlines 21 Emirates 101 In July last year, after a series of ups and downs, Airbus announced it was drastically reducing the number of A380s it would be producing in future. Reporting half-year figures, it said that "considering the current order booking situation", deliveries of the A380 will be reduced to just eight in 2019. At 2016's Farnborough Airshow the company said it would slow production to just 12 a year by 2018, down from a rate of 27 the year before. Aviation analyst Saj Ahmad from Strategic Aero Research said at the time: "Cutting the A380 underlines the marketing disaster that belies the programme and that Airbus is realising that even life support has to be turned off - and it's evident that day looms closer." Calling the superjumbo a vanity project that "needs to be killed off", he said it was almost definitely "facing the barrel of execution". Independent Air Transport consultant John Strickland told the Telegraph: "The A380 is a well regarded aircraft by airlines which operate it and by customers flying on it. Generally however, twin-engine aircraft such as the Airbus A350 and the Boeing 777 reduce the financial risks involved with filling capacity and operating costs." Airbus said the deal with Emirates meant the A380 would continue to be built for another decade. Hi Fly has become the 14th operator of the aircraft, though it is unclear if it will fly under its own colours, but the aircraft's longterm future will depend on whether any other major airlines decide to invest in the plane.

Singapore Airlines, Emirates may be possible contenders for Air India stake

Low-cost airline IndiGo‟s decision not to bid for Air India is not a surprise to many as the Gurgaon-based airline had made it clear in an “unsolicited” bid even before the divestment process started that it was only interested in the Maharaja‟s international operations and its low-cost arm Air India Express. With the government making it clear in the Expression of Interest released last week that it wanted to divest Air India in totality (Air India, Air India Express and ground handling), IndiGo had no option but to withdraw from the divestment process. Perhaps, others too, who have been looking at parts of Air India for bidding, will now have to rethink. In one sense, the government‟s decision does clarify Air India‟s divestment process as now only those who have the financial standing to bid for the airline in its entirety will remain. There is already talk that Jet Airways may tie up with Air France-KLM for making a bid for Air India. Two other airlines — Singapore Airlines and the Dubai-based Emirates — seem to fit the bill as both have been consolidating their operations in the recent past.

Singapore connect In the case of Singapore Airlines, since July last year, Scoot and Tigerair have started operating under the brand name „Scoot‟ which is the low-cost, medium-to-long haul arm of the Singapore Airlines Group. This is managed by Budget Aviation Holdings (BAH), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Singapore Airlines Group (SIA). During Prime Minister Narendra Modi‟s visit to Singapore in November 2015, the two countries signed a memorandum of understanding which facilitates co-operation in a number of agreed upon areas of civil aviation services and airport management beginning with Jaipur and Ahmedabad airports. Though this proposal is yet to get off the ground it is still something to keep in mind while looking at Air India‟s divestment and who the interested international airlines may be. With Emirates too, it is a similar situation. Late last year, Emirates and its low-cost arm flydubai decided to work together, thus, consolidating operations of the two airlines. Though Emirates and flydubai are managed independently, they are leveraging each other‟s networks to scale up their operations and accelerate growth. Emirates has also been keen to operate more flights to and from India but the Centre has not agreed to that proposal as yet. The Indian government has also been making overtures to West Asia with Modi visiting the region which was followed by a stream of high profile visits from there to India.
