Luxor’s hot air balloon trips not affected by Friday’s crash

Eight air balloons carrying 140 tourists from various nationalities, mostly from China, were released in the air on Sunday from the balloon airport in the western mainland of Luxor to watch the monuments and temples scattered in the area, 48 hours after a balloon accident in which a tourist died and several others were injured. Air balloon companies received a notification from the Luxor International Airport, at dawn Sunday, allowing the resumption of trips which had been suspended due to bad weather, said Hesham al-Desouky, director of a company working in the field of air balloons.

(2) He explained that all tourist companies operating balloon flights carry out their flights in accordance with the safety standards and procedures set by the Civil Aviation Authority. According to the Luxor Center for Studies, Dialogue and Development, the rate of balloon flights in the winter ranges between 10 and 25 trips a day. No trips were canceled on Sunday by the eight companies operating air balloon trips in Luxor. Eight companies own 25 air balloons in Luxor, according to the center. Luxor’s prosecutor ordered Saturday the detention of the pilot and three other officials from the company that owned the hot balloon that crashed on Friday, an incident which killed a South African tourist and injured several others. Minister of Civil Aviation Sherif Fathy also announced the formation of an investigative committee to determine the reason for the balloon crash. Hot air balloons are popular in Luxor as they allow tourists an aerial view of the city’s most famous landmarks such as Karnak and the Valley of the Kings. However, safety concerns have been raised more than once over the operation of the balloons. The deadliest air balloon crash took place in Luxor in 2013 killing 19 out of 21 passengers. The 2013 Luxor crash was considered the deadliest aerostat disaster in history since the Hindenburg disaster in 1937, which killed 36 people

Royal Jordanian adds 7 more global cities to its network via codeshares with Turkish and Malaysia Airlines

expanded its codeshare agreements with Turkish Airlines and MalaysiaAirlines, giving its guests the option to travel to more destinations with competitive fares and more convenience. The expansion of the codeshare agreement with Turkish Airlines, which has been in place since 2015, added three new cities to RJ passengers' list of potential destinations: Milan, Sofia and Sarajevo, which are sold in connection with RJ’s Amman-Istanbul flights. The codeshare expansion agreement with Malaysia Airlines, signed in 2010, gives RJ passengers access to four new destinations: Langkawi, Penang, Sydney and Melbourne, all sold in connection with RJ’s Kuala Lumpur flight. .

(2) RJ has 15 codeshare agreements with global airlines, including with oneworld carriers and with international airlines. Besides Turkish Airlines and Malaysia Airlines, such codeshare agreements have been signed with: American Airlines, British Airways, Iberia, Qatar Airways, Siberia Airlines S7, Oman Air, Middle East Airlines, Alitalia, Tarom, Gulf Air, Sri Lankan Airlines, Syrian Air and Meridiana Fly Airlines. RJ President/CEO Stefan Pichler said: ”Codeshare

Boeing, Turkish Airlines Announce Order for Three 777 Freighters SEATTLE, Jan. 8, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing [NYSE: BA] and Turkish Airlines announced that the carrier ordered three more 777 Freighters in December 2017. The new order came weeks after the carrier took delivery of two of the large cargo jets as part of its plan to further expand its freight business. "These freighter orders will surely contribute to our significant target for establishing a young and efficient cargo fleet," said M. Ä°lker AycÄą, Chairman of the Board and the Executive Committee of Turkish Airlines. "The new aircraft will be delivered this year and will provide us with additional flexibility to serve more destinations while we continue to develop our global freight service." "The 777 Freighter is the largest and most capable twin-engine freighter in the world today," said Marty Bentrott, senior vice president of Sales, Middle East, Turkey, Russia, Central Asia and Africa, Boeing Commercial Airplanes. "We're pleased world-class customers like Turkish Airlines recognize the value of the 777 Freighter's long range and large payload capability." The 777 Freighter is the world's longest-range twin-engine freighter and is based on the 777-200LR (Longer Range) passenger airplane. The jet can fly 4,900 nautical miles (9,070 kilometers) with a full payload of 112 tons (102 metric tonnes or 102,000 kg). .

(2)

The airplane's range capability translates into significant savings for airlines: fewer stops and associated landing fees, less congestion at transfer hubs, lower cargo handling costs and shorter cargo delivery times. About Turkish Airlines Based in Istanbul, Turkish Airlines is one of the fastest growing airlines in the world. It carries over 60 million passengers a year, with direct flights to 300 destinations in 120 countries. The airline made its first domestic flight in 1933 and the first international flight in 1947. Turkish Airlines was founded in 1933 with a fleet of five airplanes that carried a total of 28 passengers, expanding to 331 aircraft today

Juba is up there as the world's worst airport, but don't forget about Miami Like expensive watches that never break, the world's best airports can be boring. You land, breeze through passport control and check into a hotel within minutes. The worst airports have more character. To adapt Tolstoy, lovely airports are all alike, but every wretched airport is wretched in its own way. Consider Juba. The airport in South Sudan's capital is a sweltering tent next to a festering puddle. Planes are often late, so passengers must sweat for hours. The departure lounge has no toilets, no food and no queuing system. Security is haphazard. South Sudan is at war, so many U.N. planes take off from Juba carrying aid workers and emergency supplies. Aggressive officials take pleasure in obstructing them. Juba has three terminals, but only one is in use. Travelers are advised to bring a good, long book. Working out which is the world's worst airport is not easy. The best attempt is the Guide to Sleeping in Airports, a website that publishes an annual survey based on voluntary submissions from irate travelers. It ranks airports by qualities such as discomfort, poor service, bad food, cumbersome immigration procedures and how hard it is to grab 40 winks while waiting for a connection. Overall, Juba was rated worst in 2017. Since photographing any airport in South Sudan will get you arrested, the description of its "horrific smells and filth" is accompanied by an artist's impression which makes the departure lounge look far nicer than it is. The ranking is inevitably skewed by sampling bias. It misses truly awful places that hardly anyone visits, and overemphasizes less egregious ones that handle more people.

(2) To illuminate some of the gaps in existing rankings, the Economist conducted an unscientific, anecdotal poll of its globe-trotting correspondents. It attracted more, and more passionate, responses than nearly any other internal survey we have done. Here are some of our reflections from the departure gates of hell: Several airports in war zones are worse than Juba. Our Africa editor cites Bangui, in the Central African Republic: "The fence around it has been stolen, so when big jets come in to land the pilots keep their hands on the throttle so they can pull up if they see people trying to run across the runway [which lies between a refugee camp and the city, and so has lots of crossing traffic]. On the plus side it has sandbagged bunkers on its roof and was designated the final fallback position by French forces during the civil war, so if you are in it you are about as safe as you can be." Air travelers make tempting targets for thieves. They are rich enough to afford an air ticket, which in many places makes them rich indeed. They carry luggage, some of it valuable. They are often far from home and unfamiliar with local rules. Finally, airports are full of choke points creating opportunities for crooked officials to fleece travelers. The ones in Manila are especially creative. Some have been known to plant bullets in luggage so they can "find" them and demand bribes not to have the owners arrested. In Johannesburg, South Africa, the pilfering is covert but rampant. Our correspondent grumbles: "Despite packing absolutely nothing of value in my checked bags they are regularly rifled through and were twice slashed open (they weren't even locked)."

(3) Other officials harass travelers for the sheer fun of wielding power. Our former Cairo bureau chief writes, of Saudi immigration procedures: "The queues are subtly divided by nationality and caste. If you happen to be a Baloch laborer, your lot is to sit on the floor for hours. ‌ Anyone who falls asleep risks a thrashing." The worst airports reflect the vices of the governments that regulate them. Pyongyang has a totalitarian vibe. A correspondent writes: "The plane played rousing music when we flew over the border into North Korea, and we were handed copies of the national newspaper and asked not to fold it, since it had a photo of Kim Jong Il on the front page." The only consolation is that the airport has a chocolate-fondue fountain. Poor countries have an excuse for poor airports. Rich countries do not, which is perhaps why travelers are particularly irked to find grittiness in, say, Brussels, Belgium, the heart of the European Union and a noted center of gastronomy. Our Charlemagne columnist writes of Charleroi, its second airport: "It is grim, grimy and cramped, and has atrocious food. The planes leave and land at ungodly hours. And the only real way into town is a coach that runs every 30 minutes and is frequently overbooked." Many correspondents moaned about Berlin, where a new, unfinished terminal is six years late. Another European airport that elicits howls is Luton, England, which claims, fancifully, to be close to London. An intern writes: "Going on holiday and returning to Luton is like having a wonderful dream and waking up to find yourself in a puddle under a railway bridge." Our overall judgment is that, adjusted for national income per head, several busy U.S. airports would be contenders for worst in the world. Washington Dulles has the worst-designed ground transport: travelers must enter and leave a mobile pod by the same door, so everyone crowds round in the hope of getting off first, thus blocking it. JFK is the main gateway to the world's capital of consumerism, yet scarcely any retail therapy is available to treat travelers' boredom. But Miami is surely worst of all. The queues at passport control take nearly as long to navigate as Leif Erikson took to cross the Atlantic in a longboat

The winter storm was over, but chaos was just beginning at New York's JFK airport The airport receives more international passenger traffic — more than 31 million people in 2016 — than any other U.S. airport. The air travel disruptions in the wake of a powerful winter storm that struck the East Coast last week only snowballed thanks to a blast of cold temperatures and confusion on whether the airport was up and running. More than 7,000 flights were canceled because of the storm, a costly headache for airlines that were dealt a string of hurricanes in 2017 as well as for passengers who were stranded abroad after their flights to the U.S. were canceled. The storm struck when many travelers were making their way home from end-of-year holidays and 2018 business travel was getting going. For international travelers, the chaos at JFK was intense: Long-haul flights arrived in the airport only to sit on taxiways for hours due to a lack of available gates. Ground equipment malfunctioned in the bone-chilling cold, while high winds and ice on the ground after the storm hampered cleanup efforts.

(2) But passengers and airlines alike were confused by whether the airport and the carriers who operate there could even cater to them, which led to more chaos. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which oversees the airport, decided to close JFK during the storm on Thursday, forcing JFK-bound flights to divert to other airports. Even after the airport reopened, diversions continued, because there weren't enough gates to handle the previous days' delayed flights plus new arriving flights. The Federal Aviation Administration on Saturday suspended arrivals of some flights. That day an Aeroflot plane from Moscow turned back halfway through the trip to JFK. Dozens of other JFK-bound flights landed at other airports in the region and elsewhere, such as Detroit. More than 230 flights have been diverted since Thursday because of the storm, 124 of them international flights to JFK, according to flight-tracking site FlightAware. Passengers at JFK complained on social media that they were not able to retrieve their luggage as bags piled up at claims areas. The airport appeared to be slowly getting back to normal on Monday, but more than 100 flights were canceled in or out of JFK. Snow and sleet were in the forecast for the New York area during the rush-hour period, which could throw things even more off track. So what complicated the cleanup from a one-day storm? For one, while the Port Authority oversees operations at the airport and makes the call on whether to close the airport, separate terminals are leased by different parties: airlines and other consortiums. For airlines, the advantage of this arrangement is they have dedicated gates and facilities for their operations. JetBlue, for example, operates Terminal 5. American Airlines has Terminal 8. It is difficult for a plane to get a gate at a terminal where they don't normally fly into. For one, gates are often allotted to scheduled flights. Some planes are so big, such as the Airbus A380, that a terminal may lack gates or jetways tall enough to accommodate the aircraft. .

(3) Further complicating the recovery, on Sunday, a pipe burst in Terminal 4, the main international terminal, home to airlines including El Al, China Southern, Air India, Copa and Swiss Air, just to name a few. Passengers were evacuated from the terminal after a portion of it flooded, and although it reopened later that day, operations were snarled again. The Port Authority said it would investigate the incident and other relationships within the airport "The Port Authority intends to aggressively review with its partners, the terminal operators and airlines, the process to assure that planes and passengers get to their gates during the surge of rescheduled flights that follow a severe weather event," it said. While wintry weather was expected and airlines and airport officials knew about the problem days in advance, it was no consolation to passengers who waited for hours, and even days, to board flights. Many complained about a lack of communication from airlines about whether flights would take off. The storm left some flights without crews, which have strict limits on their working hours to ensure adequate rest. "This past weekend's events at New York's John F. Kennedy airport demonstrated in stunning detail the consequences of inadequate contingency planning and passenger communication at major international airports," said Greeley Koch, executive director of the Association of Corporate Travel Executives. .

Koch called out another infrastructure problem that recently snarled air travel: the nearly half-day power outage last month at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, the busiest airport in the world and the home of Delta Air Lines. "The airlines don't help themselves when they are not providing accurate information and customers are spending a lot of their own money [to get to the airport]," said Henry Harteveldt, a travel consultant and founder of Atmosphere Research Group
