Campus Expansion Plan 2013-2014/5773-5774

About Scheck Hillel Community School From early childhood through Grade 12, Scheck Hillel Community School inspires students to become exemplary global citizens with enduring Jewish identity through an innovative curriculum enriched by co-curricular experiences. All of this is set within a nurturing, international community united by core values. Hillel is one of the largest Jewish day schools in the nation, a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence and an International Baccalaureate速 (IB) World School. For generations, Hillel has fostered global, critical and creative thinking in students while developing enduring Jewish identity. With campus as home base, our students experience the larger world through a spectrum of expansive learning opportunities and the latest in educational technology. Now more than ever, universities and employers recognize that this type of education leads to success in the 21st century.

And We Shall Teach Our Children Today, Hillel is in the heart of the fastest growing Jewish population in the country. As a community, we are energized and we take seriously our responsibility to educate our children: “ - teach them thoroughly to your children.” We are a community of learners committed to academic rigor and excellence within a Jewish environment that fosters identity and Torah knowledge with a focus on Mitzvah observance. Hillel’s expanded campus is the necessary physical expression of our commitment to excellence. A school of excellence—one that expects the very best of faculty and students—can only be housed on an excellent campus. Thus, we are investing in a modern facility for children to have access to state-of-the-art classrooms, technologies, laboratories and extracurricular programs…an inspiring environment conducive to learning, incorporating the best academic design and teaching resources…a campus that incorporates every facet of a well-rounded education. We are creating a facility that will continue to attract top-caliber teachers in today’s competitive educational environment, empowering our core mission. The first phase of this project is the Eduplex and Athletic Complex. The Eduplex will include two buildings for Grades 6-12, connected by an outdoor atrium overlooking campus, from north to south. Inside will be classrooms, labs, a media center and a Beit Midrash. The schoolwide Athletic Complex will include a full-court gymnasium, regulation-size field, fitness center and other facilities for the community. To turn vision into reality, we need more than words, more than passion. We must physically expand and build with steel, glass and stone. And thanks to generous friends with a commitment to current students and a vision for next generations, we’re doing exactly that.

Hillel Today: Poised for Growth Hillel stands tall on 14 acres in the heart of the fastest growing Jewish population in the country. Beyond our internationally recognized educational program, Hillel is further enhanced by our celebration of diversity. Families and educators come from across the globe and represent many denominations within Judaism. We offer financial support to nearly 20 percent of our students. Leadership includes nationally recognized faculty, esteemed administration and a Board of Governors that comprises international business owners and community leaders. Parents themselves are an international circle of highly educated professionals. School accolades and achievements are earned locally and beyond. For example, Hillel is one of the largest Jewish day schools in the nation, a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence and an International BaccalaureateŽ (IB) World School. And yet‌enrollment of more than 1,000 students has reached capacity with waiting lists in some grades. Campus now includes facilities built more than 30 years ago, along with modular buildings that don’t have the space to facilitate the learning and spiritual experiences that students deserve, parents expect and Hillel is able to provide. Community events, physical education classes, athletic team practices and home games are held at the neighboring Michael-Ann Russell Jewish Community Center, which at times is unavailable during school hours. It is time to come together as we grow and write our next chapter.

Eduplex
(Middle School-Upper School Education Complex) This three-story, 70,000-square foot facility will house 50 classrooms for Grades 6-12, a science wing of four laboratories and administrative offices. It will be home to the Hillel Experience, designed to cultivate students’ moral, intellectual, spiritual, aesthetic and physical qualities through rigorous study, religious and cultural experiences, extracurricular programs, service learning and leadership, so students develop a 21st century skill set. Open hallways will be designed for spaces without walls to create environments that do not limit learning to classrooms. Bridging the Middle School and Upper School will be an open outdoor atrium overlooking the Athletics Complex. The Media Center will serve as the crown jewel of the building on the third floor, equipped with advanced digital, print, and communication facilities. Here, students will gain fluency in new and emerging technologies, and have access to the vast information resources at their fingertips. In addition to secular reference books and materials, the center will house an extensive library of Judaic modern and sacred texts, supporting Hillel’s balanced curriculum. The Beit Midrash will be attached to this academic building. It will be a place for communal worship, study and even guest lectures with auditorium style seating. A balcony will offer an overlook of the split-level space from the classrooms, expressing continuity between academic studies and Jewish life. With state-of-the-art technology and fine faculty, this facility will position Hillel as a center of learning that serves North Dade and the wider community by offering summer school for children who may not attend Hillel, hosting continuing adult education courses and serving as a satellite for national and overseas universities.

Athletic Complex Extracurricular activities are indispensable to a well-rounded curriculum. With Hillel’s uniquely large, diverse student population, it is essential that we provide excellent resources so that all of our children—whether they spark to athletics or theatre, music or art, student government or community service—can fully explore interests and talents. The Athletic Complex will provide more than a home to sports. Equipped with digital display boards and an advanced sound system, it will be a place where community will gather and experience recreation while building shared spirit. For example, it will enrich North Dade by offering venues to the neighboring Michael-Ann Russell JCC to host international Maccabi Games and grow its summer camp, and it will serve as a community venue for chagim (holidays) and smachot (celebrations). Investing in school sports facilities will give children the competitive advantages that a strong athletic program brings to the college admissions process, and the lifetime benefits of sports: encouraging the habit of fitness, teaching the value of teamwork and fostering discipline and leadership. On the map for garnering district and regional titles, Hillel athletics also have been acknowledged for taking leads like building one of the nation’s first Jewish varsity football programs. The Athletic Field will be covered in synthetic turf at regulation size for tackle football, soccer and lacrosse, with a softball diamond. Such an addition will allow Hillel to enhance with new sports; lacrosse is one example. The Gymnasium will host everything from local games and school events to regional and national tournaments to social community events. It will be used as a regulation-size basketball court, three regulation-size volleyball courts or three practice-size basketball courts; it also will include a multipurpose weight room and men’s and women’s locker rooms with showers. With trophy displays showcasing student athletes’ achievements, the Athletic Complex will be the center for Hillel community pride.

Hillel Tomorrow Community is central to Hillel’s expansion. The design will add an open yet protected interior space for assemblies, playing fields and socializing. Within this safe space, children will be free and secure to move from one part of the campus to another as a unified school community. Adjacent to the new facilities, Hillel will build a community park for surrounding neighbors. Outdoor learning and green space are priorities of this project that will beautify and enhance North Dade beyond the Hillel campus. Hillel does more than provide children with a place to study and prepare for college. It is a safe place for children to develop their Jewish identity – a place to grow in confidence and connection to the community and to gain the grounding in Torah knowledge that will guide them through the modern world in which we live. Providing a safe place for their physical, mental and spiritual development is at the heart of our mission. Fact: A strong Jewish education is a key factor in Jewish continuity, according to recent studies. Fact: Children who attend a Jewish day school for several consecutive years are more likely to be members of a synagogue than those who don’t attend a Jewish school. * Fact: Most of the current and previous generations of community leadership attended Jewish schools, and Hillel is the school that many of today’s leaders attended. Assuring the future of Hillel as a vibrant center of learning will help to ensure the future of our community. The more we strengthen Hillel in resources, facilities and education, the more we strengthen our next generation of Jewish leaders. *2004 Greater Miami Jewish Community Study for Greater Miami Jewish Federation

Ways to Give We have already begun with several important, early gifts. And now with your generous participation, we will turn vision into reality. Outright gifts: A monetary gift is one of the most popular ways to fund Hillel’s tuition assistance program and campus expansion project. Your one-time gift is tax deductible for the current year, and can be given by check or credit card, or in cash. Pledges: A pledged donation may be spread out over several years, typically three to five. We can develop a payment schedule with differing amounts from year-to-year to accommodate your individual needs. The pledge can be fulfilled by check, credit card or in cash (or funded with other property, as described below). Securities: Donating securities is often your most tax advantageous way to give, particularly if they have appreciated in value. This applies to stocks, bonds, mutual funds and other liquid assets. If the stock has been held long-term (more than one year), you may not have to pay U.S. capital gains tax when the gift is made and may be allowed a tax deduction for the full value of the stock at the time of transfer. Planned Gifts: Making a planned gift can be an integral part of your estate planning. Hillel works with a philanthropic gift counselor on such tax-related matters to engage with your attorney, accountant and tax advisor to maximize the positive financial impact for yourself and for your heirs. Examples of effective planned gifts include Charitable Lead Trusts and life-income gifts. We can help you identify options that will benefit your family and Hillel. Endowments: An endowment is the establishment of a fund where a portion of the fund is used annually for a specific purpose while the rest of the fund remains invested in perpetuity. Gifts to Hillel are tax-deductible, per IRS guidelines.

We Invite You
We invite you – parents and grandparents, alumni and friends – to be part of our plan to create a new model of excellence in Jewish education. We invite you to be proactive about preserving what you value most in life. We invite you to make your contribution where it will have enormous impact close to home…here, where you can see the benefit to your children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and to yourself, in assurance of a new generation of leaders to write the next chapters in our book of Jewish history that began thousands of years ago. Our campaign for the transformation of our Hillel campus from a school to a center of Jewish life and learning is an investment in the future.
