What is a SIEM?

SIEM is short form for Security Information and Event Management, and it uses software to provide real-time event analysis of devices on the network. SIEM aggregates information from the device and explains key attributes (IP, user, event type, memory, process, port, etc.) related to identifying a security event or problem. Devices including firewalls, servers, IPS / IDS, antivirus, spam filters, etc. generate event logs and then send them to SIEM for analysis.

How does SIEM work?

SIEM first works by collecting all event logs from configured devices. Logs are sent to a collector, which typically runs on virtual machines inside the host network. Next, the logs are sent securely from the collector to SIEM. SIEM merges logs, parses each log, and then categorizes them into event types such as successful and failed logins, exploit attempts, malware activity, and port scanning. These event types are then run against the rule set to determine if there is illegal traffic. If a rule is triggered, an alert is created.

Benefits to using a SIEM A number of contemporary firms seek out managed SIEM solutions. Network visibility can be key to understanding and stopping attacks. Real-time monitoring provides deeper insights and reduces response times. Reporting tools in SIEM can be used to complete compliance requirements and management operations. For example, if you want to see all failed VPN logins for your organization, you can schedule reports or run reports on demand. Log data is usually stored in the system and can be used for

historical analysis or investigation. Perhaps an incident happened 10 months ago, SIEM can provide audit records and activity reports through an interface.

Overall, the biggest benefit is that you can gain inner peace through a complete understanding of the activities on the Internet. Without proper event log monitoring, the risk is multiplied and this damage will be ignored. SIEM enables you to improve your overall security posture by adding an extra layer to your defenses.
