FATHOM 5

fathom 5:

mixed use academic year four

fathom 5

Fathom 5 is a compact-living residential complex that aims to democratize independent living to those seeking an economic, environmental, and socially sustainable lifestyle. A combination of private and public amenities creates vibrant social and comfortable living spaces, while engaging the public in an uncommon new configuration of residential life. In combination with Calgary’s high vacancy rates, the concept of fitting out vacant spaces downtown in order to increase population density in areas that are highly serviced by public transportation, as well as close to many workplaces, is a novel, experimental, and progressive way to approach residential living. Integration of public spaces within the dwelling environment serve as 'extensions of the home': opportunities to create social capital and for vibrant, livable communities to be born and flourish. The continued development of walkable communities in pre-established areas of mixed commercial and residential use is crucial in resisting the temptation to build outwards and unnecessarily consume land in a vast area such as Calgary. The massive vacancy rate downtown provides a shining opportunity to create mixed use communities and to re-purpose unused space. This project serves as a prototypical model of the possibilities of new urban residential life.

EXTENSIONS OF THE HOME 1

Residential zones are stacked to increase systems efficiency, due to the standardization of units. Each unit has an expansive glazed connection to the exterior, generally southfacing to provide a consistent and bright atmosphere. Each unit is separated by a partition providing a Sound Transmission Class rating of 68.

2

Units surround and are adjacent to shared spaces that are available for use by all residents. The second level hosts a 'sharing library,' full of objects that could not reasonably fit in a compact dwelling: items that are used sparingly or occasionally, but are necessary to have access to nonetheless. Additional storage is also available on this level, as well as laundry facilities. The third level hosts a shared media space with lounge furniture and a home theatre. Also on this level is a large shared kitchen, dining, and living space for those wishing to throw a dinner party or have multiple guests.

3

The coworking space is structured to offer different residential elements to further the concept of 'extensions of the home.' Seating is available in kitchen, living room, and dining room formats to offer a diversity of choice for the worker. Whether one works best at a kitchen island, on lounge furniture, or at a desk in solitude, each option is available. An auxiliary-style boardroom is present for group or media-based conferencing.

4

5

An interconnected stair links the lounge and coworking spaces: spaces accessed by the general public. This aims to make the complex more approachable, and encouraging for non-residents to explore and engage with the available services. It also serves to increases traffic flow through the lounge, creating more recognizable faces and establishing a strong community. The lounge space is separated into two public areas: a casual cafe, and a lounge-like living room. This provides distinct spaces for users to occupy based on their level of interaction with the complex as a whole. Residential furniture is found in the lounge area to extend the feeling of the units upstairs and to include the public in the project's narrative.

INSPIRING PRO-ENVIRONMENTAL BEHAVIOUR How can compact living be implemented with psycho-social sustainability in order to reap benefits of environmental conservation and social capital? One of the primary goals of this project is to inspire proenvironmental behaviour via reductive and material-conscious design. While the units are intended to be comfortable and satisfy human need, they are also aimed to highlight frugal living as an attempt to influence behaviour. The units should feel like home, however they will also be simple, and clad in natural-looking materials to inspire environmental consciousness. Unit design should compel tenants to conserve resources, reduce consumption, and recycle waste, as occupant behaviour has shown to be the largest proponent of pro-environmental action in the built environment. While humility is the driving concept of residential space, a playful approach is added to the project’s extension spaces. This choice addresses livability. A spirited atmosphere establishes comfort for residents to utilize these spaces as their own, while being simultaneously approachable for users from the general public.

A TYPICAL UNIT / 1:50

ANATOMY OF A UNIT Though units vary slightly to accommodate for diversity in the building envelope, each unit is comprised of modular elements joined to form cohesive and livable dwellings. Each unit has a transformable bed to maximize open living space, and remove the necessity for dedicated spaces for both a living room and bedroom. The kitchen and bathroom are connected, forming a block that can be expanded and reconfigured to suit each individual unit. Though uncommon, this combination of kitchen and bathroom is integrated to ultimately maximize modularity and open living space. Additionally, storage is integrated into many of the millwork components, including a sliding pantry and a pull-out shoe compartment.

A RADICAL TRANSFORMATION Full fathom five thy father lies;

The project is eponymized after a line sung by the spirit, Ariel, in Shakespeare’s final play, The Tempest . In her song, Ariel comforts a young Prince named Ferdinand that his father, who has recently drowned in a storm at sea, is not to be lamented in death. Instead, he is undergoing a ‘sea-change,’ the first known modern use of the word, which signifies a radical transformation as he becomes one with the Earth once more. While this transformation is perceived frightfully by the living, Ariel sings, it is in fact a beautiful process wherein one’s eyes become sea pearls, and one’s bones become coral: an elegant unity of man and nature. This song describes the merging of humankind and Earth by means of a dramatic change. Fathom 5 seeks to inspire dramatic change by design, namely, reducing the excesses of Western lifestyle. The idea of adopting the “rich and strange” as an outcome of this transformation is alluring and hopeful, which I hope inspires users to commit to a change in lifestyle that can at times seem daunting and futile.

Of his bones are coral made; Those are pearls that were his eyes: Nothing of him that doth fade, But doth suffer a sea-change Into something rich and strange.

William Shakespeare, The Tempest (1.2.538-568)

BLIND IS AN ART GALLERY WHOSE CENTRAL PHILOSOPHY REVOLVES AROUND THE DESTABILIZATION OF ONE OF THE WORLD’S MOST EXCLUSIVE ECONOMIES. The gallery displays art in a variety of conditions - original, forged, printed, mass-produced - without any indication that might pre-determine a visitor's opinion. A discomforting confrontation of the human psyche and our perception of value, blind metaphorizes our quest for enlightenment, beauty, and truth through a space replete with strange and visceral geometry.

ACCESSIBILITY IS A CRUCIAL COMPONENT OF THE GALLERY’S DESIGN. EQUAL OPPORTUNITY IS REQUIRED BOTH PHILOSOPHICALLY AND PHYSICALLY.

Blind is a space about relationships: the relationship between light and dark, between truth and fiction, and between rationality and entropy. It is an environment sustained on the innate human desire for truth, manifested through curiosity, theatricality, and uncertainty.

COMMUNITY

03

community:

t o w n h a l l academic year three

The new community centre was designed not to continue serving its current needs, but rather to change the neighbourhood’s social landscape by offering thoughtful spaces that encourage gathering and connection. The neighbourhood structure of Sunalta is not naturally conducive to bringing its residents together and creating a community. The amenities that are provided generally cater to destination visitors rather than locals. Sunalta’s amenities may serve to benefit the community in an economic sense, but they do little for the neighbourhood’s social capital. As a by-product, Sunalta lacks the togetherness that turns neighbourhoods into communities.

This building is not interested in changing Sunalta’s standing or reputation within the city, but rather to showcase the important attributes of lower-income neighbourhoods. In providing restaurant and theatre amenities, the new community centre seeks to consider the role of the lower-income neighbourhood within society to create a thriving social facility that causes the community to flourish.

SUNALTA RESIDENTS ARE UNITED NEITHER IN THEIR AGE, THEIR INCOME, NOR THEIR ETHNICITY, BUT RATHER BY THE PLACE THEY CALL HOME. WHY NOT HAVE A PLACE TO CELEBRATE THIS SIMILARITY TO ALL?
