OF
FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL
It’s been a great start to the year, and it is indeed good to be back together again! On opening day, we gathered together in Benitez Chapel nearly 1000 strong as we do to start every year, and we welcomed our 222 new students across a student body of 800. Importantly, we likewise recognized that fully half of the student body had never, not once, been together in Benitez chapel. This absence left a huge hole that we are grateful to be able to fill this year. Throughout these first weeks of the year, beginning in early August with our new faculty, then later with our full faculty, and finally, with our students and parents, our theme this year is getting back to what brought us. This year our focus is, above all things, our mission and our Episcopal identity.
Our mission calls us to be an inclusive and joyful Christian community where students discover and develop their individual talents through the Four Pillars, preparing for meaningful lives in service to others. We recognize that each student is an individual with unique God-given talents and abilities. What we do so well is to help each student realize fully that promise through experiences in all Four Pillars—Religion, Academics, Arts, and Athletics. Each week we offer 153 courses across 475 sections and all in a seven-period day. We have 101 classroom teachers all but two of whom are full-time. Across our faculty, the average number of years teaching is 17 and the average number of years at
We pride ourselves on the strength of our community and our joyful approach to our work together. Students of all backgrounds thrive at EHS. We celebrate the unique merit of all students of all backgrounds and believe in developing their talents, faith, conscientiousness, and resiliency. We are strengthened by the lively exchange of ideas among individuals of different experiences, backgrounds, and perspectives.
Our curriculum strives to amplify this commitment and to uplift everyone. Every EHS student must know they are heard, respected, and divinely loved.
Houston is the fourth-largest city in the U.S. and one of the most vibrant and diverse in the world. It is a far cry from the city of 45,000 that entered the 20th century. In 1983, Episcopal High School was founded on the premise that we want our student body to be broad and diverse rather than narrow in admitting only one type of student. Given this, we want our students to have a greater understanding and awareness so that we can learn from each other, thereby strengthening the overall community.
As was the case with our founders, we believe that Houston will look different as our children come of age, and we want to do our part to prepare them for the world they will enter and see in their lifetimes, fully grounded in our Faith and the Episcopal mission.

Ned Smith, Head of School

FROM THE EXECUTIVE CHAIR
Episcopal High School, founded and guided by the Diocese of Texas, is an inclusive and joyful Christian community where students discover and develop their individual talents through the Four Pillars – academics, arts, athletics, religion – preparing for meaningful lives in service to others. –EHS Mission Statement
At a youthful 38 years old, Episcopal High School ranks as one of the top private high schools in Texas, with sparkling facilities, an outstanding faculty and staff, and a long-tenured and excellent administration. But, most importantly, its halls are filled with smiling faces—a testament to the vision of Episcopal’s founders.
Recently, I read a speech given by Bishop Maurice Benitez on Founders Day in 2008. Bishop Benitez was one of the many amazing people who helped found Episcopal. With an equal measure of humor and humility, Bishop Benitez recounted the early challenges and credited everything to the school’s principal founder—Almighty God. When you read Bishop Benitez’s speech, you realize how right he was, and how his words resonate today—particularly when he described the Religion Pillar:
“The next Pillar of the dream—and maybe the most important if the first ones are to be reached—is that this school be a Christian Community where every member, each student, each faculty, and staff member, be treated as a beloved child of God. And, for that reason, from the first day, since our doors were opened, you could walk the halls of this school and see smiles on the faces of the students and see smiling faculty members who love this School. This describes the vision we have sought to uphold.”
Speaking on behalf of the Board and the administration, faculty, and staff, we fully understand that this is the most important part of the vision and what sets Episcopal apart. It is what brings us together as one community and why we have smiling faces across campus.
As importantly, we also believe that this part of the vision is what allows us to navigate the issues of our time and face the challenges of this era. And, as we all know, there have been some challenges!
One of these challenges has undoubtedly been COVID-19. I am very proud of how the administration, faculty, and staff have navigated the past 18 months. We have garnered national recognition and have continued to chart our own path and “Stand Out”. We have not done so recklessly—but with thought and careful consideration every step of the way. We have chosen to lead and will continue to do so.
However, a once-in-a-century global pandemic may have been the easy part. The political environment is one that we have not seen for a generation, if not longer. We are not immune from it, nor should we be. It is in this environment in which we must educate our children and help prepare them for the world beyond Episcopal.
This brings us back to the words of Bishop Benitez and the centrality of faith to Episcopal High School. While we can return to normal (or very close to it) with regard to COVID-19, we strongly believe that our mission and Christian faith can guide us through the more difficult issues that still confront us, both as a school and a society. Although we may strive for perfection, we are not perfect and fully understand that we will have to deal with other issues in the future. However, by hewing to our mission and keeping our faith central, Episcopal will continue to be the school that Bishop Benitez described—one with smiling faces that, despite their differences, are unified as beloved children of God
Kind regards,
A. Haag Sherman, Executive Chair of the Board of Trustees

OUR FISCAL YEAR
Episcopal High School operates debt‑free and is an excellent steward of every tuition and donated dollar. Philanthropy through Annual Giving and the Endowment covers about 13 percent of the School’s annual operating expenses. Exceeding regional standards, Episcopal High School allocates at least 10 percent of our operating budget to financial aid. Lastly, as a strategic goal to attract and retain the best faculty and staff throughout the Four Pillars of academics, arts, athletics, and religion, compensation is the largest expense item in our budget.

BEAU EDWARDS ’22

EHS Community,
It is difficult to grasp that my tenure as president of the EHS Alumni Directors Council is coming to an end. For the past four years, I was fortunate enough to be elected, first as a member, then vice president, and ultimately president. I can truly say it has been an honor.
This past year has been nothing short of surprising! EHS was ready to take on COVID-19 in a timely manner from the start. We were one of the few schools able to shift to online learning at just a few days’ notice. Even when I was a student at EHS (which, admittedly feels like decades ago), we have always been at the forefront of technology and evolving our learning culture. The dedication from teachers, staff, board members and alumni leadership to push our standards forward and continue to innovate is unrivaled.
We have been able to achieve phenomenal milestones this year despite unprecedented hurdles. EHS was able to host its first virtual alumni leadership program where we were able to connect alumni from around the country with our current students. This allowed our students to grasp a better understanding of career paths outside of Texas.
I would like to thank all the alumni who helped this past year, as well as our previous presidents, the Alumni Advancement community, and the alumni office (Ashley Long, Margaret Young, Ikechi “Chief” Achilefu ’03). And of course, every student who has been engaged with our department – we appreciate your support. Ultimately, we believe in setting a precedent in which our Four Pillars are the hallmark of a student’s life going forward, and we could not have done it without our team!
My last request as President is to ask our alumni and soon-to-be graduates to please connect with our EHS family. Our community, unique culture, and active alumni network make EHS what it is today, and what it will be in the future.
Once again, thank you all for an amazing four years on the Directors Council, and thank you to all my fellow alumni for the help, time, talent, and advice this past year. Once a Knight, always a Knight! Have a great year!
Go Knights!

The Silver Dollar Society
Named in honor of EHS founder, alumni parent, and alumni grandparent John Austin, this leadership giving society focuses on alumni 5-20 years out of high school. Since 1989, Mr. Austin has gifted every graduating senior with a silver dollar to remember their time at EHS and to symbolize their first gift back to the School.
We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to our Silver Dollar donors; we are sincerely grateful for your support!

AUCTION 2021: LIGHT UP THE KNIGHT
Little did we know how applicable our quote for the 2021 Auction would prove to be! “Nothing can dim the light that shines from within,” not a global pandemic, not even an ice storm. On Friday, February 26, 2021, the EHS community was able to gather virtually to celebrate Episcopal High School’s 37th Auction, “Light Up the Knight.” Guests picked up fabulous charcuterie boxes made by City Kitchen, while EHS totes provided a drink kit, complete with sparklers and floral centerpieces, so guests could “Light Up the Knight” in the comfort of their own homes. Co chairs Michelle Juden and Caren McKinnie, along with countless volunteers, numerous donors, and all of our participants raised necessary revenue for the School’s operating budget.

PARENTS ASSOCIATION
Under the leadership of Parent Association President Kristi Kincannon, EHS Moms planned for the 2020-21 School Year with the hope of being on campus and participating in normal parent activities. Unfortunately, that did not happen as planned. With that said, our moms had a positive attitude and worked on committees on and off campus. Mentor Moms helped onboard new students and parents. The Academic Pillar, Christmas Décor, Poinsettia Sale, and Faculty/Staff Appreciation committees had limited access onsite but were able to work and complete projects during the year. Our HANDS group helped with projects at home and delivered them back to EHS. Moms in Prayer met off campus, lifting our students, faculty, staff, parents, and the EHS community with thoughts and prayer.
The Parents Association continued to financially underwrite many projects such as the Family Directory, Knight Vision Sunglasses, Got Blue Spirit Shirts, New Student T-shirts, Faculty/Staff Appreciation, and the Auction. The new Chapel Video System, also received funding from this parents organization.
Even though their campus attendance was reduced, our moms participated and helped throughout the year when called upon. We thank them for their patience, understanding, work, and unwavering support during a difficult year. We know the EHS Community will once again enjoy their excitement, enthusiasm, and smiling faces on campus very soon.

DADS CLUB
Under the guidance of President Ronnie Deyo, the EHS Dads Club provided event participation and financial underwriting to the EHS Community.
Although the number of events was reduced, those in attendance enjoyed fun, fellowship, and the opportunity to meet other dads. The annual Fall Sporting Clays event provided an early opportunity for our dads to meet as a group and enjoy an evening together. The Spring Golf Tournament had a record number of participants enjoying a full day of golf and fun at Wildcat Golf Club.
The Dads Club continued helping the school community through several areas of underwriting. Funding included Student/Faculty/Staff “Got Blue” T-shirts, Spirit Club, New Student T-shirts, Faculty/Staff Appreciation, Family Directory, College Counseling, Arts Pillar Opening Night/Cast Party’s events, Chapel Video Cameras, and a new Drone for the Communications Department.
The Dads Club’s Lead the Way Campaign participation continued as they made their final pledge payment for the new Field Hockey Field. They are on track to fulfill their pledge for the construction of the Simmons Field Press Box by 2023.
Since 1994, the Episcopal High School Dads Club has given back almost $2,200,000 to the EHS Community.
Even though 2020-21 was not a normal EHS year, our dads continued to show their support and passion for our community.

ENDOWMENT UPDATE
The Episcopal High School Endowment Fund serves as a long-term investment vehicle for Episcopal High School. In the last year, it has provided stability in an uncertain time. Its basic purpose is to achieve long-term appreciation of principal and to provide potential income to fund financial aid and the operation of the School’s properties and programs as directed by the Episcopal High School Endowment Board.
The EHS Endowment Board continues to provide careful oversight for the School’s longterm assets. This committed board that governs these assets, and its investments has worked diligently and strategically with its investment advisors to have a strong diversified portfolio. In addition to the basic purpose, the focus continues to be long-term growth to support the School’s operations, its direction, and its mission. Victor Kormeier, one of the founding trustees of the endowment and its president, elected to retire as president in 2020. Due to his dedication and careful oversight, the endowment increased manyfold. Vic will continue to serve as a trustee. The new president, Randa Williams, is grateful for the support of Vic and all the long-standing members of the Endowment Board.
As of June 30, 2021, the Endowment Fund ended with a balance of $51 million. In addition, the Endowment Fund has future pledges to make the total assets of the Endowment worth $55 million. The Endowment contributed $1,111,000 to the School’s annual operating budget of $31,031,000. We are pleased that the Endowment could make a significant contribution to the daily operating needs of the school.
Ongoing Endowment growth continues to be a strategic goal for the School because a strong endowment ensures an affordable, sustainable future. The Endowment Fund has and will continue to provide stability during challenging times like we have seen during these times of the world pandemic. We are proud to have accomplished the completion of major building and classroom projects without having any additional draws from the fund. Episcopal High School’s Endowment Fund welcomes contributions and pledges of any amount. The Endowment is a perfect way to preserve a donor’s charitable intent for generations to come. Margaret Young, Director of Annual Giving and Major Gifts, myoung@ehshouston.org, would be happy to discuss endowment giving opportunities in more detail.

IN MEMORIAM
Russell Randall Grace Jr. ’90
The Episcopal High School family mourns the loss of Randall Grace, Class of 1990. After EHS, Randall attended Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, New York where he served as captain of the polo team. He was also president of his senior class and gave the commencement address at his graduation in 1994. Randall joined Chilton Capital Management as an Investment Analyst and in 2020 he was named CFO of the firm. He served on multiple committees at St. Martin’s Episcopal Church, was a member of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo and served on numerous boards of Houston-area organizations. He loved the outdoors and spending time with family and friends. Randall will be missed by all who knew him.

IN MEMORY OF CHARLIE RAYMOND
With the untimely passing of Charlie Raymond, son of Head Varsity Cheer Coach Leigh Anne Raymond and John Raymond, many in the EHS community raised funds to create what is now “Charlie’s Hill” to honor his memory. Charlie’s Hill is adjacent to Simmons Field and the Hildebrand Athletic Center. Listed below are the donors who made this possible.
