TELLENBOSCH UNIVERSITY (SU) recycles 216 000 kg of food waste a
year. The university has been recycling all of its food waste for the last two years by using blue plastic drums and Bokashi probiotic. This food waste recycling programme is a first for a South African university. It was started at the Lydia residence as an entry in green project competition. The SU recycles 18 000 kg of food waste a month, using Bokashi and composting it at its Welgevonden experimental farm. The programme was fully implemented with a small capital investment in 200 blue plastic drums. Bokashi ferments all food waste. Food waste comprises as much as 30% of non-recycled waste, but most commercial kitchens and households (even those that do recycle) do not recycle food waste as they are unaware of the technology available. Households can, however, recycle food waste with a simple bucket system and Bokashi. All food waste, raw and cooked, meat, dairy and bones can be recycled

Ons Benod Home Sellers: How to Sell WithoutBOEKE an Agent! The number of private sales that 'fail' is increasing at an alarming rate in South Africa, a new report revealed. This increase is attributed to the fact that most private sellers do not have sufficient knowledge about the various pitfalls of the Real Estate industry and therefore make rash, costly mistakes. The argument for selling privately is that a seller need not pay commission to an agent and is therefore able keep all the profits derived from the sale for themselves. This idea seems great on the surface, but you should be aware of the many potential pitfalls associated with private-selling. A new report has been released, entitled "Private Selling 101: Risks and Rewards" which outlines nine areas that you will need to know,
understand and act on if you are going to sell your home privately for a good price. It shows that selling your home privately is not only possible, but can also give you the return that you are looking for if you have the knowledge to do it correctly. Inside the report are 9 tips on private selling that will help you to sell your home by yourself, for the best possible price, and in the shortest timeframe. Konvokasie mosie DREAMSEASONS
Nóg sake bygevoeg ELBÉ VAN HEERDEN
’n
By haar verskyning het
Marianne Hopkins (47) in hegtenis geneem.
’n MOSIE oor Afrikaans as onderrigtaal aan die Universiteit Stellenbosch (US) sal Donderdag 10 November by die US Konvokasie-vergadering dien.

Sunday, 13 November 2011 Everyone FREE Die Laan will be closed from 07:00 in the morning Noordwal-Wes and Die Laan around 11:00
The event wants to encourage everyone to participate while promoting safer cycling. The recent completion of an NMT (non-motorised) route along Suidwal encourages everyone to leave their engines and use a bicycle, skateboard or their two feet. The event will be a celebration of safe and sustainable transport, in the Greater Stellenbosch, and citizens are encouraged to ride towards the river from wherever they are, then cruise along the banks of the river, with a stopover around 11:00 at the corner of Noordwal-Wes and Die Laan, where the Municipality will hand out snacks and bicycle bells to younger riders. Safe cycling tips from the PPA website at www.pedalpower.org.za include: • Obey the traffic rules • Always stop at red traffic lights, and stop streets • Ride in single file, unless you are overtaking • Indicate your intentions (to turn or stop) by using the appropriate hand signals, and check to see that drivers of vehicles have noticed what you intend doing • Do not ride in the gutter or too close to parked cars, especially when they have people about to open doors to disembark· • Always carry identification on you

TRAFFIC FINES
Many still outstanding ELBÉ VAN HEERDEN
A
FTER the Stellenbosch Traffic Department sent out 16 000 text messages to traffic violaters last week, the response from the public was overwhelming. This followed the news that 56 000 fines were still outstanding, excluding R21 million outstanding speed and red light violations. Unfortunately a serious math error slipped into last week’s edition, which stated that the fines totalled R120 million. Eikestadnuus apologises for the one nought too many, as reported by the traffic department, but R24,9 million still translates into a lot of outstanding fines! According to Patrick Oliver, director for Public Safety of Stellenbosch Municipality, they had a huge response from the public. “Hundreds of motorists phoned in to enquire about their outstanding fines.

“The traffic bus, which acts as a mobile office, also had great success, with R23 000 in outstanding fines being settled while it was out on the road.” People with outstanding fines can approach the bus with queries regarding their
outstanding fines. The traffic department will continue with special operations throughout the greater Stellenbosch to target traffic violators, especially those who disregard stop signs. “We have had a number of operations in the area, and between 24 October and 3 November we’ve issued 278 fines for stop sign offences. It seems that motorists have a tendency to disregard stop signs, but we are putting a stop to that,” Oliver added. The traffic department also supplied the Eikestadnuus with a list of the top 50 speed violators on their records. The main culprit has a total of 57 outstanding fines, amounting to R12 350. The outstanding fines for the top 50 motorists amount to R256 340, a total of 1 234 fines. If you have outstanding fines you can contact the traffic department at 021 808 8850 or fax to 021 883 2662 or e-mail to speed@stellenbosch.org.
The members from the Groot Drakenstein SAPS involved in the arrest of four hijackers of a motor vehicle on Saturday. Here are (clockwise from front, left) Const. Julian Martin with Serg. Constable September, Const. Gerswin Claassen and Const. Johan Bosman.
Carjackers caught in chase MEMBERS of the Groot Drakenstein SAPS arrested four suspects shortly after they had hijacked a car in Lanquedoc on 29 October. According to police spokesperson, const Rionell Uithaler, the members on patrol came across a suspicious looking vehicle in Pniel at about 02:00. “The car drove off at high speed when the members tried to pull the vehicle off the road. The driver lost control of the vehicle at the entrance of Lanquedoc and crashed into a concrete wall next to the road. The four occupants jumped
out and fled the scene on foot. “The members called for back-up from the Paarl Dog Unit and went to search for the four occupants. They came across an injured man in Lanquedoc, whose car had been hijacked minutes earlier. It was established that he is the owner of the black Peugeot found by the police.” According to Uithaler four men were later apprehended. They appeared in the Franschhoek Magistrate’s Court on Monday. A case of car-jacking is currently being investigated.

DORPSKWESSIES BESPREEK
Sidego luister ‘groot oor’ SAMANTHA VAN DEN BERG EN ABRIE BURGER
D

Volgens me. “Dié saak is nou al holruggery. Me. Gisteraand se vergadering was by die Klapmuts Primêre Skool.
)Watter uitdagings ervaar julle hier?

With thousands of students and an increasing number of professionals commuting daily between the two areas the demand for a bus service has grown drastically. “We hope to have a final plan and answers by the end of November,” Meyer said. “This is excellent news,” said Peter Ford, the chairman of the Helderberg Residents’ Action Association (HRAA). “Through their support, local residents will have the opportunity to justify and sustain the much-needed and convenient service that they have demanded for a long time. “Among its many benefits will be reduced travelling costs and stress for harassed motorists, alleviation of road congestion and reduced carbon emissions,” said Ford. “It also vindicates the efforts of those who have campaigned vigorously for public transport for so long. “Everybody stands to gain. We congratulate Golden Arrow and wish them success in their trial period.”

Satellite nearing end of lifespan SAMANTHA VAN DEN BERG SUMBANDILASAT, South Africa’s second micro-satellite, seems to be nearing the end of its lifespan. This satellite, launched on 17 September 2009, is a product of the local satellite company, SunSpace, a spin-off company of Stellenbosch University. According to Mr Ron Olivier, director for business development at SunSpace, they have had intermittent communication with SumbandilaSat until about two weeks ago. “The batteries have been discharged and we failed to make contact. We are not certain whether we will make contact again, but we are hoping for the best.” The satellite, however, has been the target of some scathing comments by DA Shadow Minister for Science and Technology, Marian Shinn. Eikestadnuus reported last year on how Shinn called it a “flying turkey”, asking the government to stop funding it. In a recent statement she said: “SumbandilaSat has so far cost the public purse R100 million”. She was commenting on the
problems the satellite was experiencing after it had been damaged in a solar storm early in June. “I have submitted parliamentary questions to Science and Technology Minister Naledi Pandor asking for an explanation of the failure, steps taken to rectify it and details of the impact on delivery of SumbandilaSat’s images to end users,” her statement reads. Dr Kelvin Kemm, a nuclear physicist from Washington, defended the satellite in a recent article in Engineering News. He said that the SumbandilaSat team deserves a pat on the back. “They have built two satellites in an university environment, using many graduate students as the labour force. In world terms, this is a significant achievement.” Despite criticism, the satellite has produced 1 900 useful images, as well as nine new black trainee engineers (four females), 18 Masters and two Ph.D. engineering students and experience for 78 other engineers. “I am confident that the program objectives have been met, and in many cases exceeded,” says Olivier.

RENOWNED PLAYWRIGHT TALKS ABOUT HIS LIFE
Athol Fugard is proudly South African SAMANTHA VAN DEN BERG
“I
describe myself as a South African bastard - half English, half Afrikaans. I’m a writer and a man of the theatre. But finally I’m a South African. The proudest thing of them all.” This is how the renowned playwright, Athol Fugard, described himself at a talk he gave to students from Stellenbosch University in the Neelsie Cinema last Friday. Fugard, who now resides in America, is widely known as the author of the novel, Tsotsi, which was adapted into an Oscar-winning film. As a fellow of the Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Study (STIAS) he has been staying in Stellenbosch for the past few months. The Student Representative Council and Listen, Live and Learn invited him to tell students more about his life

and interests. Fugard, however, shied away from giving a prepared talk and turned it into a question-and-answer session. He revealed that he is busy writing his first Afrikaans play during his stay at STIAS. When asked why he chose theatre as medium he said that theatre chose him. He said that the best theatre works are when you don’t know you’re getting a message at all. “It’s when not just your head, but your heart gets affected. Theatre is there to do two things: to excite my head and to affect my heart.” When he is writing, he leaves behind every negative feeling the human heart is capable of. “What I take to the table is love. It’s the only energy I use.” He referred to a few of the plays he wrote during the Apartheid era, but fo-

cused mostly on Master Harold and the Boys. The play is based on his childhood relationship with Sam, a black man that worked in their Port Elizabeth home in the Eastern Cape, where he grew up. His Afrikaans mother had to support the household, because his father was disabled and an alcoholic. Fugard, being a young boy, needed a man to look up to and Sam was that man. “He was everything I wanted my father to be.” According to Fugard creativity is the nearest one can come to being a god. He said that it is the power within us to transform our own experiences that can in turn affect other’s lives. He told the students that they hold the future of the country in their hands. By looking at them, his pride in being a South African is reinforced. “You are the future. If anything goes wrong, I’m going to come back and blame you,” he said.

“Anoniem”: u gesteelde handsak is vir my net so ernstig soos enige ander misdaad. Terugvoering oor diens by die Munisipaliteit – goed of sleg – is baie welkom, asseblief. Ek het my kliënt sien arriveer en haastig my motor verlaat vir ons afspraak by die koffiewinkel.

Ek: “Ja, my trouring” Michael: “Hoe lyk die ring, mevrou?”
Aan Michael wil ek net sê: “Jy’s my hero! Die Man daar Bo het jou op12 Oktober oor my pad gestuur!

JAN MARAIS ONS “WELDOENER”
‘Skitterende middelpunt in SA opvoeding’ MARTIE RETIEF MEIRING
’n
Dís wie hierdie Jan Marais was.

Casidra (Pty) Ltd strives to be the leading facilitation partner for sustainable, integrated rural development with measurable impact on poverty reduction. The company is a schedule 3D Provincial Business Entity in terms of the Public Finance Management Act.
CALL FOR PROPOSALS LOCAL ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT GROWTH FUND Whether you’re running a business in a rural or non-rural area of the Western Cape, you’re just the person who should be reading this… We know how difficult it has become to build a successful enterprise in many parts of the platteland – or even in townships not all that far from our bigger cities or towns. We know that you will appreciate all the help that you can get from provincial government. That is why we think you will support the thinking behind – and the implementation of – our Local Economic Development (LED) Growth Fund. Set up especially for you, its aim is to provide opportunities for growth-oriented enterprises like yours – in rural and non-rural areas of our province. Accessing the fund could not be easier. All that is required is for you to buy into the idea that co-operation among enterprises can open up a range of exciting possibilities - even if yours is one of the smallest businesses in your town. The formation of a business ‘group’ - comprising at least two separately owned businesses - in your area could put you on a pathway to success that you might never have previously thought possible. Once you’ve formed your group, go to the LED representative at your municipality or contact us and request an application form for the LED Growth Fund. Officials there will give you all the information you need to complete the form correctly. The idea is that provincial government assistance will increase the productivity and competitiveness of your business (and of others) – and that this, in turn, will promote growth and create more jobs. The fund is geared towards lending a hand in areas like productivity improvement, research and development, training, property rights, market studies and market access needs, and innovative ideas and proposals. But remember, though: the success or otherwise of your application will depend on four things: • The application form must be accompanied by a proposal explaining how government support will increase the productivity of your business • You will need to partner with at least one other business in this venture • For your application to stand a chance of being successful, it will need to be co-financed by yourself, and matched by government - Rand-for-Rand • The application cannot be for the establishment of a new business or entity. What is required from you: • Collect and complete an application form • Submit it to Casidra at the following address: Attention: Leon Faro, Casidra, PO Box 660, Southern Paarl 7624, tel: 021 863-5000 • Be available during the assessment process for an on-site interview with the assessors • Make available any additional information that may be absent from the application form, or be required in addition to the information on the application form. For more information on the LED Growth Fund, contact Anzél Venter at 021 483-9295 or Anzel.

Conrad Sidego

Beeldhouwerk by Tokara:
Sondag is “IS Scupture at Tokara Delicatessen”, ’n uitstalling van bekende beeldhouers se werke, by Tokara geopen.
LA MOTTE of Franschhoek has been voted the South Afrivir ander koerante can meiwinner of the Great Wine Capitals (GWC) Best Of Wine Tourism Awards for 2012. The announcement was made recently in Mainz, Germany at a gala dinner attended by leading wine tourism practitioners from around the world. La Motte, with a history dating back over three centuries, was declared the winner in the Arts and Culture category for its impressive art museum that houses the Rupert family’s extensive collection of artworks by 20th century South African master Pierneef and other artists.
However, what clinched the overall win for the winery was its consistently high performance across other categories it had also entered. Other regional winners were Delaire Graff Lodges & Spa, situated on Helshoogte Pass, for offering the best accommodation for the second consecutive year; Tokara of Stellenbosch (Wine Tourism Restaurant); Solms-Delta of Franschhoek (Innovative Wine Tourism Experiences) and Waterford Estate in Stellenbosch (Wine Tourism Services). Waterford is a previous Wine Tourism Services winner.

CIA Awards for two local buildings
T
WO buildings in Stellenbosch each recently received an award in the prestigious Cape Institute for Architecture (CIA) Awards for Architecture 2011. The 101 Dorp Gallery and Studio by Slee & Co Architects received the CIA Award for Architecture, whilst the iKhaya Trust Centre in Kayamandi was awarded the CIA Merit Award. The 101 Dorp Gallery and Studio was honoured for the way in which the architect succeeded in combining the practice and the art of architecture. The design of the building was mainly driven by the need to conserve the historical significance of the site. According to Slee & Co Architects the building does this by assuming a modest position in the historical Dorp Street scape. “The new double story façade is half hidden behind an ancient oak tree and its timeless aesthetics allows it to blend with the historical buildings on either side and across the road.” According to the CIA’s 2011 Award brochure, “the building’s ability to share space and encourage pub-
lic access is a welcome change to the often grand and self-conscious front-of-house, so often projected in architects’ workplaces. In the case of 101 Dorp Gallery and Studio, where ‘giving back’ to the street happens in a modest but generous manner, and scale and context are respected, the architects are to be congratulated”. The iKhaya Trust Centre belongs to the Greater Stellenbosch Development Trust (GSDT) from where educational programmes for children and community upliftment programmes are run. It was developed in 2002 and significantly extended and renovated in 2010 with funding from the Restis Family Trust, the NTLF and various other donors. The renovation project was initiated by Hannes van Zyl and the architect was Jan Klingler of Kr2 Architects. Mhlobo Jadezweni, chairperson of the GSDT, welcomed the award as recognition not only for exciting architecture in Kayamandi, but also as recognition for the efforts to help children from Kayamandi to develop their potential.

WINES2WHALES
Bergfietstoer het geen gelyke EUNICE VISAGIE
D
IT is tyd vir die derde Contego Wines2Whales-bergfietstoer.
volle afdraandes is,” sê Knipe. “Ek is mal oor bergfietsry. Ek bly in Stellenbosch so ek ken die area redelik goed.
