Kansa Relay For Life

INFORMATION BILL

The oppressed now the oppressor “F ORGET it. We have been closed down!” These chilling words on Black Wednesday, 19 October 1977, serve as a dire reminder to 229 ANC members who voted for the Protection of the State Information Bill earlier this week in parliament. Uttered by chief subeditor Maggie Paterson to The World’s news editor, Joe Latakgomo, when he started to select stories for the next day’s paper, the words reflect the finality of censorship when a government chooses to follow the route of repression of freedom of information. When the Second World War came to an end, a committee representing many countries and cultures drew up the Universal Declaration of Human Rights – of which South Africa was a signatory. Article 19 clearly states: “Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; the right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through the media regardless of frontiers.” If this so-called secrecy bill is adopted by the National Council of Provinces and is signed by Pres

Jacob Zuma, South Africans will again enter the dark days of apartheid repression. We have seen the first signs of the effect this bill will have on the free flow of information when the Mail & Guardian last week appeared with reports blacked out because of a fear of prosecution by the State and the president’s spokesman, Mr Mac Maharaj, accused of corruption in the arms deal. This bill will have an effect on every citizen of the country who expects to have the right to ask questions about their local councillors and the management of their affairs. It will allow local government officials from the tiniest village to big metro councils to suppress access to information by the media and citizens when corruption and fraud are suspected by the taxpayers. No one can raise the defence of “it was in the public interest to get this information

03

and to make it widely known”. Your local newspaper editor or its journalists may be sent to jail for up to 25 years if they contravene this bill, even if they had acted in the public interest. The Indian economist Amartya Sen, who won the Nobel Prize for economics in 1998, emphasised that freedom of speech is a marker for other kinds of freedom. “Its lack is always linked to repressive regimes, to the ‘unfreedoms’ of poverty and famine, as well as to the oppression of women.” Black Wednesday of 19 October 1977 has become Black Tuesday of 22 November 2011. The oppressed have, tragically, within just more than three decades, become the new oppressor. - George Claassen is the ombudsman of Media24’s Community Press and a member of the South African National Editors’ Forum.

DIE Kankervereniging van Suid-Afrika (Kansa) se Relay For Life (RFL) vind op 3 tot 4 Desember by die Van der Stel sportgronde plaas. Dit begin om 15:00, met ’n Luminaria-seremonie om 20:00. Toegang is R10 en daar sal aller-

KAYAMANDI FIRE

Minister lends a hand ELBÉ VAN HEERDEN

T

HE Western Cape minister of Social Development, Albert Fritz, visited Kayamandi this week after a fire in one of the informal settlements claimed the lives of two children and left 38 families homeless. The fire in Kayamandi on Saturday night started at 22:55. The two children were sleeping. According to Patrick Oliver, director for Public Safety and Security at Stellenbosch Municipality, 15 houses were destroyed in the fire. “The families have been put up at the Kayamandi Tourism Corridor in the interim, where the municipal disaster management team will be making sure they are fed.” Minister Fritz visited the

BEOOGDE SELFOONTORING

Raadslid Quintin Smit

‘Toring in vlees’

) Watter uitdagings ervaar julle in Wyk 8?

dagings aangespreek? Raadslid Quintin Smit kan geskakel word by 0 021 808 8008 of 073 608 1867.

Mnr. Pieter Jumat, ’n inwoner in Bot-

From Peace in the Home to Peace in the World: Proliferation of small arms and their role in domestic violence” gehuldig. Layla vertel dat haar man eers

“Hy was ’n rustige persoon. Twee, drie nagte aaneen. As ek iets sê, dan skop en slaan hy my. “As my arms blou was, het ek dit probeer wegsteek. “Só het ek my werk verloor.”

“Ek het daardie aand gedink hy gaan my doodmaak. Ek moes ’n keuse maak: my huwelik of my kinders. “Daar is lewe ná so ’n huwelik. ’n Vrou is nie ’n man se slaansak nie.” *Skuilnaam is gebruik.

PROF DAVE RICHARDSON

Biologist honoured SAMANTHA VAN DEN BERG

A

Stellenbosch invasion biologist has recently been named the 2012 recipient of the Royal Society of South Africa’s prestigious John FW Herschel Medal. Prof Dave Richardson is the deputy director for Science Strategy at the NRF-DST Centre of Excellence for Invasion Biology and a professor at the Stellenbosch University (SU) department of Botany and Zoology. He is awarded for his multi-disciplinary work on the management of invasive species. He will receive this senior medal from the Society at the annual awards dinner in 2012. “It’s always nice to receive acknowledgement from one’s peers. The Royal Society is a prestigious body and it’s gratifying to see that research on invasive species is recognized as important and seen as appropriate for such a medal,” says Richardson. Richardson studied at the SU and started his career as a forester in Jonkershoek. He soon became interested in pines as invasive species, which eventually

Prof Dave Richardson Pic: Samantha van den Berg

led to him doing his Ph.D. on the ecology of pine invasions. He says that in his research, his focus is not just on understanding invasive species, but on managing them as well. To do this, one has to understand much more than just the biology of the species. “One has to address the conflict of interests regarding these species such as why they were introduced to the area in the first place, what their benefits are, or

could be, and how the negative effects can be minimized. “Invasive species are fascinating. You introduce these species from other parts of the world, they arrive without key natural enemies and often proliferate and spread. “It’s interesting to see how invasive species interact with the local species and the effects they have on ecosystems.” Through this, a whole new field of science, namely invasion ecology, has developed. “We are learning how to predict which species will be successful and how to manage them,” says Richardson. Another interesting aspect of his research is his collaboration with researchers from around the world and from various disciplines. According to Richardson he has worked with, amongst others, historians, economists, geneticists and sociologists. “This is crucial for solving modern problems associated with invasions. “We must not see issues as enclosed in separate boxes. We must include various disciplines to form new ideas.”

No silencing us! THERE is a sense of déjà vu in the air. The ANC’s bulldozing through Parliament of the Secrecy Act without a public interest clause as defence for those exposing wrongdoings in government, makes a mockery of their struggle for freedom of speech. It also harks back to darker times when the media was really repressed. Of course, it is necessary to protect state secrets. However, classifying information left right and centre to keep bad news and corruption out of sight, is not acceptable. And once the bill is passed, editorials such as the one below of 14 March 2008, would in all likelihood, be problematic. “Who were caught with their pants down at Mystic Boer, Bohemia and Springbok Pub last weekend? Not the patrons, but the police, in a disgraceful display of aggression and violence. A carefully selected group of men from various units – apparently thirteen in all! – raided two pubs in town in the most ruthless and crude manner possible. Women were elbowed aside, some flung through the air like rag dolls. Patrons were ordered to lie down on the ground, where they were kicked in the face and head, and sprayed with pepper spray. Police denial of such behaviour is, however, refuted by video material showing how troops invaded the pubs, shooting holes in the ceiling and generally creating havoc. However honourable their motives may have been – addressing alleged incidents of drug abuse and other misdemeanours – did they really warrant such an excessive show of force?” Eikestadnuus has a proud tradition of more than 60 years of keeping a wary eye on the local authorities and police force. Many of its enquiries have gone unanswered, journalists have been badgered by municipal councillors, threatened by officials, even slandered in advertisements. But this did not daunt us. As in the past, the Eikestadnuus will continue to report on matters of public interest and concern.

Apology to Clouds Ministries Jean Claude Banza, writes: Dear friends, families and comrades in the service of Christ. Through this letter, I sincerely apologize and deeply ask for forgiveness, firstly to the family of “Clouds Ministries” which I had the privilege of leading for the past eight years, and to those of the body of Christ as a whole who are concerned. Please forgive me; I have sinned against my Father and have let many of you down. I have hurt the very people I love most. I am deeply sorry. Sin’s pain is unbearable and I wouldn’t want to see anyone of God’s children go through this. Many may be wondering, why now? First, I was still in complete shock, totally confused as a result of countless other voices that seized the opportunity to raise serious and very painful accusations against my soul… it was the most bitter cup to drink. Secondly, God had to expose how much pride and arrogance is in me. The wanting to justify myself element and the spirit of true repentance were at war against each other inside me. Sin is sin, it must be repented and not justified. So often the

enemy whispers his lies into my heart saying: Why don’t you just end your life and you’ll be ok? What a lie! Christ died so that we may live. I am accused of being a psychopath, and publicly declare death on me… I understand, but Christ in me is all that matters, even though I never experienced anything like it in any other church through my living memory! I am not a psychopath. Due to my nature and love for people I intend to say “yes” to everybody and eventually regret the circumstances thereof. The price to pay for “pleasing mankind is vanity”. I have now discovered the crucified way of our Lord JesusChrist in a new way. I am begging those being hurt by sin not to fall astray and lose priceless faith because of me. I cannot change the past but I leave it in the mighty hands of the ONE who can turn a mess into a message. I have confessed my sins. I love the Lord and will continue my journey as conducted by Him. I pray for all concerned to do the same, follow our Saviour with new passion than ever before. He will never leave you nor forsake you.

Swart Dinsdag gaan oor jóú vryheid

D

NEW BRAND FOR STELLENBOSCH

It’s a ‘master stroke’ SAMANTHA VAN DEN BERG

“T

HE idea around Stellenbosch 360 is a master stroke. Its symbolism is magic to me.” Those were the words of Alderman Conrad Sidego, executive mayor of Stellenbosch Municipality, at the year-end function of Stellenbosch 360 (formerly known as Stellenbosch Tourism Bureau) last Thursday. This was the newly-branded Stellenbosch 360’s first official function since Stellenbosch Tourism was recently disbanded and replaced with Stellenbosch 360. This formed part of an initiative started recently to promote and market Stellenbosch by including all its role players and members of the community. The goals of the initiative include the development of a new brand for the town, Route 360 and a new world class visitors centre. At the function held at the Lanzerac Hotel and Spa, Alderman Sidego spoke about building “people experiences”, using the example of Disneyland where people came back for the experiences they hve had with other

people. He added, however, that these experiences should not only be offered to outsiders, but to the locals as well. “The same way that people study Disney for their success, they must look at Stellenbosch in the future, when we are not here any longer, and say: ‘That was a master stroke, an amazing dream’.” For Sidego, strong leadership, is, however, needed to realise all the potential. “We, as a municipality, are committed. We have the political will. It’s in our people. We have it, let’s do it.”

At the function, Prof Andreas van Wyk, chairperson of the Stellenbosch 360 board of directors, introduced the rest of his board. The new board includes Annemarie Ferns, Jurgen Bolz, Ken Forrester, Zaida Jackson, Charles Ndlebe, Councillor Pietman Retief, Heidi Newton-King, Elanie Fourie, Jan Scannell, Craig Seaman, Prof Julian Smith and Frans Stroebel. Those interested in becoming a member of Stellenbosch 360 can contact Adele Toua by phoning 071 771 4444 or 2 members@stellenboschtourism.co.za.

MATRIC PAPERS EASIER THIS WEEK WITH two weeks left of their final examination, matriculants had Business Studies and Geography to deal with this week. Eikestadnuus went to find out how pupils from Kylemore High School (Business Studies) and Kayamandi High School (Geography) felt about their examinations. Pics by Abrie Burger.

Dedirey Jacobs from Kylemore High School: “The paper was better than those from June and September. I will get at least 50%.“

Lindsay Johannes from Kylemore High School: “It was okay. I studied all the long ques tions that were in the paper. It was better than the other papers.”

Zanozuko Mhlifili from Kay amandi High School: “I enjoyed it. It was quite easy. Maybe it was because I studied a lot and pre pared well. The books helped.”

Asiphe Nkume from Kaya mandi High School: “The Geog raphy paper was very difficult. I struggled with the questions in Section A and Section B.”

Dullin Gerber from Kylemore High School: “It was okay be cause I thought it would be hard er. I thought the long questions would be the most difficult.”

Owen Mhlakaza from Kayamandi High School: “This was easier than the pa pers our teachers gave us during the trial exams.”

Academy for Fashion Design SINCE the mid-90s, the Elizabeth Galloway Academy of Fashion Design in Stellenbosch has been training individuals to enter the fashion industry or to become fashion-design entrepreneurs. Practical experience plays an important part in the programmes, as it ensures that students gain industryspecific knowledge. Furthermore, an emphasis on theoretical reflection creates insight and understanding, which allows facilitators to adjust their teaching strategies accordingly. The institution is focusing on developing learners’ self-confidence so that they are able to cope with the demanding, fast-paced fashion industry. Resources – such as a library with internet access and use of the Worth Global Style Network (WGSN) and a full-time

librarian - offer research support. Tasks are designed to promote creative learning, encourage portable skills and endorse informed and relevant choices. Evaluation of the outcomes through assessment and self-reflection helps in the overall preparation for work in the industry. Industry experience plays an important role in ensuring that training does not happen in a vacuum. The theoretical, practical component and experiential components play equally important roles in their teaching and learning strategy. The ranges and final year’s work of third year students will be on display at Lourensford Hall, Lourensford Wine Estate, Somerset-West on 29 and 30 November. HE humming of merry hymns with family and friends on picnic blankets under a starry sky will be the scene on Neethlingshof on Sunday 27 November at the annual Christmas concert of the Stellenbosch University Literacy Festival. PROMOSIE

Volkswagen se elegante CC JOHANN VAN TONDER

I

Toy Drive for Jamestown NO child should go through Christmas without toys or the joy and magic that a child deserves during the festive season. To ensure this Stellenbosch Square Shopping Centre has arranged a collection point for toys for little girls and boys aged 2 to 9, attending the Jamestown Christmas Charity Party. Their plea is simple, to help them make the holidays a little brighter for children living in the informal settlements in Jamestown and the surrounding farming communities. There is no specification as to the type of gift. Dolls, trains, cars, balls, puzzles, board games, jewellery, craft kits – all gifts are welcome! The Stellenbosch Square team will tag

the gift appropriately to include the name of the person sponsoring the gift. The main focus of the Jamestown Rural Action Committee is to improve housing and playgrounds for the citizens in Jamestown’s informal settlements and adjacent farming communities. Their annual project is a Christmas charity party held on 10 December at the Stellenzicht Secondary School grounds from 10:00 to 16:00 and caters for up to a 1 000 kids. This year they aim to bring families together by inviting the parents to spend the day with their children, while the organization entertain the kids with a food parcel and a Christmas gift. OLAND Athletics’ Pieter Lourens is the new track and field chairperson for Athletics South Africa. Lourens said that track and field athletics in South Africa are facing some major challenges in the immediate future. “It is only nine months until the Olympic Games in London. A country’s success at the Olympics is measured by the performance of the track and field athletes. We need some quality standard track

and field meetings in the coming months to prepare them. At the end of the day we want to lift the standards of our athletes.” Lourens believes that South Africa will be able to regain its position as one of the world’s leading track and field nations again, provided that the base of track and field athletics can be broadened by providing easier access to young athletes. ) The last event in the Boland Summer Series is this evening at Coetzenburg.
