Foto: Daan Williams

WATERVROU VAN KLAPMUTS

‘Bespaar water, dis gratis’ SAMANTHA VAN DEN BERG

E

Lee-Anne Witbooi, ’n jare lange inwoner hier, woon vandeesweek die toekenningsgeleentheid in Johannesburg by.

groot guns.

Hot spots KAYAMANDI

Twee afgemaai in skietvoorval JAMEY THOMAS

T

WEE mans is Saterdagnag (4 Augustus) buite ’n plaaslike kuierplek in Kayamandi in Stellenbosch doodgeskiet.

beswyk.

Burglar on the run arrested A THIEF was handed over to the Stellenbosch police for arrest after ADT Security’s central monitoring centre received an alarm signal from a home in Olyf Street on Tuesday 31 July. Stellenbosch Watch (SBW) officer Aubrey Mxabo was dispatched to the address in Dalsig, and while inspecting the property, he noticed a man making his way along the driveway toward the street. “I managed to apprehend the suspect, who had a bag in his possession,” said Mxabo. “During this time, a resident of a neighbouring home arrived and in-

formed me that the suspect had broken into his house. “The resident also confirmed that the items found in the bag belonged to him.” In the wake of this incident, Rob Dale, managing director of ADT Security Western Cape, said: “If an intruder has triggered your home security system, or if you suspect there is someone on your property and you have activated the alarm, remain indoors until the armed response officer has arrived. “Let the officer inspect the premises, and only go outside once they have indicated it is safe for you to do so.”

COSTA-MOORDVERHOOR

Beskuldigdes, regter besoek Costaplaas CARRYNANN NEL

D

Ek het ’n stem agter my gehoor. Dis eintlik waar ek my tekkie verloor het.”

VORDERINGSVERSLAG

SOE: Onreëlmatighede by munisipaliteit onthul SAMANTHA VAN DEN BERG

D

’n Klag is by die polisie gelê.

Van dié sake strek so ver terug as 2006.

By dié geleentheid Saterdag het prof.

Irregularities revealed THE progress report of the Special Investigative Unit (SIU) on its investigations into various institutions – amongst them, Stellenbosch Municipality – was released recently. Investigative officers have been in and out of this municipality’s offices for the past two years – on command of president Zuma himself – looking for evidence of corruption and fraud. As the investigation continued, one wondered whether they would ever find anything of substance, considering the time lapse and absence of the individuals under investigation. However, the SIU identified the procurement of services for a cultural day in Kayamandi in April 2009 – to the tune of R777 550 – and the appointment of a coordinator for the Stellenbosch 2010 Soccer World Cup project as “irregular and unlawful”. Evidence of a “conflict of interest” was also found in the tender process of seven tenders to the value of R106 million - Tender 34, a cause of great discontent and distrust in the community. This report of the SIU is a mere progress report. However, it is a vindication for the distrust of civil organisations, such as Stellenbosch Ratepayers Association, in municipal procurement processes. They and others have regularly railed against the lack of transparency frequently evident in the awarding of tenders. The municipality instigated these investigations, and has laid charges against certain individuals. However, civil society is still none the wiser, and will be watching closely whether any further action will be taken once the final SIU report is submitted to parliament.

Daarom is ek gereeld Saterdagoggende ’n toeskouer by Paul Roos Gimnasium (PRG) se tuis- en soms ook weg-rugbywedstryde, as ’n geleentheid hom voordoen.

Ek haal egter my hoed af vir Drostdy. Langs die veld was daar

Mag die afrigters my egter verkeerd bewys! BEKOMMERD STELLENBOSCH

WOULD the traffic department please explain the apparently contradictory road markings in the centre of town? When proceeding south from the traffic circle at the post office in the right-hand lane, one encounters a white right-turn arrow, followed by a yellow one, implying that one may turn right only from this lane. However, after this, one encounters a straight-ahead and

right-turn yellow arrow, which implies one can continue straight ahead and turn right. As far as I was taught, a yellow road sign indicates one may continue in the direction as indicated only and no other, so proceeding straight ahead is not a legal option after a yellow right-turn arrow. I would appreciate advice on this matter as it has caused

much confusion. SVEN COLES STELLENBOSCH Andre van Niekerk, director of engineering services, Stellenbosch Municipality, responds: I fully agree with the writer. Our paint contractor made a mistake, and he has already received instructions to correct the contradictory road markings.

‘Peace needed for development’ SAMANTHA VAN DEN BERG GOVERNMENTS need to be committed to democratic governance, transparency, accountability, poverty reduction and equitable distribution of their nations’ wealth to avoid conflict and prepare for development. This was the opinion of Joaquim Chissano, the former president of Mozambique and the chairperson of the Africa Forum, during a lecture at STIAS in Stellenbosch on Monday. Chissano gave his thoughts on Africa’s hope for security and development in the 21st century. He was invited by the Stellenbosch University’s Security Institute for Governance and Leadership, of which he is the patron. According to Chissano, Africa and its leaders consider security and development as a priority for the continent, adding that their pursuit for security and development has had a big influence in changing the political and economic landscape in Africa. This can be seen in three trends, namely the end of boundary disputes, the end of military coups d’état and the introduction of, among others, multi-party systems. He argued that the link between security and development must be understood.

Peace and stability is needed to achieve sustainable development, he said. “After the war in Mozambique, we have a clear appreciation of the place of peace and security in development. The war placed a lot of pressure on the economy and reduced the government’s capacity to address the basic needs of the people. There were three million refugees in neighbouring countries and one million internally displaced. He explained that external and internal sources were used to provide basic services and that the country’s economic infrastructure was destroyed. “The cost of postconflict reconstruction was very high.” He added that it is against this backdrop that he wants to emphasise the link between security and development. Chissano also reflected on Africa’s prospects for development, saying that he finds it “encouraging that the World Bank has indicated that the economy of sub-Saharan Africa grew faster than both Brazil and India during the first decade of this century”. He concluded by saying that Africa is well prepared to make use of the global opportunities in the 21st century and that it will retain its strategic importance in the world.

AAR passie is plaaslike bestuur.

“Baie

Say yes to healthy living NEARLY 50% of adults in the developed world suffer from being overweight or outright obese, and South Africa is on par with countries such as the United States of America and the United Kingdom, with up to 40% of women suffering from obesity. In South Africa more than half the female population is overweight or obese. Obesity is on the increase, as are all the medical conditions associated with it. People who are overweight or obese are at increased risk of coronary disease, stroke, congestive heart failure, cancer, sleep disorders and type-two diabetes. Obesity is basically defined as having a body mass index of over 30, and it is estimated that the condition can shorten life by an average of nine years. With the introduction of the worldrenowned Cambridge Weight Plan in

South Africa, there is no longer reason to be part of these statistics in the country. This weight plan was launched in the United Kingdom 30 years ago, and has since been followed by more than 15 million people in 25 countries. The programme is only available through Independent Cambridge Weight Plan SA consultants, who provide a personal screening, advisory, monitoring and support service – a major factor in maintaining motivation and achieving success. The Cambridge Weight Plan is a series of weight management programmes that are based around nutritionally complete formula food that provides 100% of the recommended daily allowance of all vitamins, minerals and trace elements. Women in politics JAMEY THOMAS

“IN politics: if you want anything said, ask a man; if you want anything done, ask a woman.” This was the opening quote to South African politician Diane Kohler Barnard’s lecture entitled “Walking the Political Tightrope”, at the Legal Aid Clinic in Stellenbosch on 8 August. The lecture as hosted by the Democratic Alliance Student Organisation (DASO) Stellenbosch. With Women’s Day commemorated this week, Diane found it the perfect opportunity to talk about a woman’s role in politics, but also the perfect time to talk about a topic students seem to be so disinterested in. “No-one is obliged to care for politics. It is only the politicians who know the true importance, but everyone must realise the part they have to play,” said Diane, who is currently the shadow minister of police and a Democratic

Alliance member of parliament. According to Diane women in politics are doing work and getting things done which were inconceivable in previous eras. However, instead of women complimenting her on the beautiful jacket she wore at a meeting which was aired on TV the night before, she would rather like them to listen to and understand what she was saying. “This endless bizarre open season of hair and clothes is never the case with a man,” she said. Diane also said that politics have been a male preserve for a long time, but the male dominating mould has finally been broken. She admits that when entering a meeting with a whole lot of men, she sometimes have to sort out their mind processes. “As women in politics we have a duty to make the nation the best for our loved ones by stepping up to the plate,” she says.

Business for breakfast: Somerset College hosted Nicky

Newton-King, CEO of the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE), as its guest speaker at the annual Somerset College Business Breakfast, held at Stellenrust wine estate. Newton-King’s address was on “The JSE: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow”. It was clear from her presentation that the JSE has taken great strides over the past two decades, in the volume of trade, the digital revolution and its regulatory framework, a college spokesperson says. Newton-King emphasised her determination to lead an organisation of world-class operations and standards. This dynamic woman grew up in Somerset West, and attended primary school at Somerset House. The breakfast was well attended, and profits from the event were donated to a charity under the JSE. Seen here are Nicky Newton-King (middle) with Jan de Waal (junior school headmaster at Somerset College) and Dr Tim Nuttall (senior school headmaster at the college).

The F Word word op 14 Augustus opgevoer.

Dramafees vir die winter

D

15

Koshuistye in Dagbreek en my groot liefde vir Nerina.

CONFIDENCE IN RETAIIL SECTOR

Nedbank takes equity stake in Eikestad Mall

T

HE Nedbank Group has once again demonstrated its confidence in the longterm growth potential of the retail sector, not only by providing the finance for the completion of the new Eikestad Mall precinct in Stellenbosch, but also in taking an equity stake in the development. The Eikestad Mall precinct is a five-phase, multipurpose property redevelopment in the heart of Stellenbosch, which is widely regarded as one of the prime retail and residential growth nodes in South Africa at present. The Eikestad Mall itself represents phase one of the project,

and comprises over 32 000 m² of retail and almost 1 800 m² of office space. This first phase, situated in Bird Street, is already 99% complete and boasts a number of blue-chip anchor tenants, including Woolworths, Checkers, Truworths, Foschini, Edgars, Clicks, Pep, Ackermans and Ster Kinekor. Phase two of the development, Andringa Walk, is adding names such as Mr Price Fashion, Home and Sport, Game, Incredible Connection and Food Lovers Market to the retail mix. In addition, the completion of phase two will see the opening of a multi-level parking garage

comprising 541 parking bays for commercial and residential use, which will go a long way towards easing the parking challenges previously posed by this hightraffic area in the CBD. By the end of 2012, the completion of phase three of the project will see the addition of Mill Square to the precinct. Located on the corner of Plein and Andringa Streets, with direct access to Eikestad Mall, this multistorey office complex will be built around an open, outdoor mall area and also offer further ground-floor retail space. Phase four will see the construction of a Virgin Active gym

above Eikestad Mall and 119 luxury residential apartments above Andringa Walk. According to Richard Thomas, regional executive for Nedbank Corporate Property Finance in the Cape, the bank’s decision to involve itself in the Eikestad Mall precinct was an easy one to make, given the “obvious potential that the project holds to contribute significantly to the economic growth of Stellenbosch and its surrounds”. “Eikestad Mall is the only mixed-use development of its kind in Stellenbosch,” he said. “By breathing fresh new life into an older section of the city, the devel-

opers are contributing tangibly to its fast-growing commercial, retail and residential appeal.” Thomas added that the “proven experience of the partner companies in the development consortium” was a contributing factor to Nedbank Corporate Property Finance’s decision to fund and participate in the development. While the landlord, Abacus Holdings, is a relatively new name on the SA property landscape, it was formed through the collaboration of two property industry stakeholders in the form of the Atterbury Group and the Abacus Group.

Locals compete for accommodation awards THE Western Cape establishments set to compete nationally in the 2012 AA Quality Assured Accommodation Awards programme have been announced – and Stellenbosch boasts no fewer than nine establishments on the list. Essential Travel Info, the organiser of the programme, recently announced the finalists. Twenty-two accommodation establishments in the province will compete against their counterparts in 18 categories in the national awards, which will be held in Johannesburg on Thursday 30 August. Where there are three or more finalists in a category, a regional winner is chosen.

In categories with only one or two regional finalists, the regional finalists automatically become national finalists. Accommodation types include country retreats, game lodges, guest houses, leisure hotels and self-catering resorts. Five establishments in the Western Cape have entered the award programme’s hall of fame, including Eendracht Hotel and Self-Catering in Stellenbosch. Establishments receive this honour after having been winners in a specific category of accommodation for three consecutive years. They remain in the hall of fame for two years, after which

they can choose to re-enter the programme and compete openly, or merely be reassessed to keep their status. The other competing establishments in Stellenbosch include regional finalists Summerwood Guest House, Batavia Boutique Hotel, Zevenwacht Wine Farm, Knorhoek Country Guest House; regional winners Eikendal Lodge and Bonne Esperance Guest Lodge; and national finalists House of House Guest House and Life & Leisure. The two Franschhoek establishments, Gable Manor and La Fontaine Guest House, are both listed as regional finalists. The results can be viewed on www.accommodationawards.co.za.

SAS

Cellar2Cellar-wedloop

The SA Schools team is currently staying at SAS. Here (from the left) are Handré Pollard (vice-captain), Pierre Schoeman (captain of the SA Schools team) and Paul Roos Gymnasiums’s Chad Solomon at the capping ceremony of SA Schools.

Big dreams for S’Bosch EUNICE VISAGIE

A

FTER a successful first six months, the Stellenbosch Academy of Sport (SAS) will not be caught in a comfort zone, and will now focus on attracting more local and international teams and athletes to Stellenbosch. SAS opened its doors on 11 January this year. “We at SAS want to be part of the big stories of local and international sports,” said the academy’s CEO, Rob Benadie. “Stellenbosch is the perfect environment for rugby, but that is not our only focus.” SAS is the home of the SA Sevens team and the Western

Province Rugby Academy. Currently the SA schools squad is also staying there, and earlier the SA u.20s called SAS home. The Young Springboks won the Junior World Cup this year. “We want to contribute to the success of SA sport. SAS is more than simply an impressive collection of bricks and mortar. We have professional, skilful people who are all striving to create a world-class environment that what will make SAS successful. “We are really proud of the SA u.20 rugby team and feel that, with the professional environment we provided, we played a small role in their success.” SAS has also provided facilities and services to athletes of

various disciplines, from Germany, the Czech Republic, New Zealand, Australia, England and other countries. For Benadie it is important, though, that SAS does not work in isolation. “We are part of the Stellenbosch package, and we will never take what we have for granted. I know that we always need to up our game and take it to the next level. “That is why we will work closely with local stakeholders in addressing any aspect that impedes our vision of becoming a world-class training and preparation environment – such as the absence of a 50 m swimmingpool,” Benadie said.

Besoek www.4x4teambuilding.com of www.enteronline.co.za.
