BOTSING VAN VOOR OP N1
Ongeluk eis Remgrohoof SAMANTHA VAN DEN BERG
D
Hulle was in ’n wit Land Cruiser VX onderweg
na hul plaas op Barrydale. Volgens kapt.
ROUDIENS VIR REMGRO-HOOF THYS VISSER
Gerespekteerde sakeman gegroet SAMANTHA VAN DEN BERG
“T
Wyle mnr. Thys Visser (58)

“Hy is ’n man wat ons geweldig baie gaan mis.

A NEW act, which took affect at the beginning of this month, will allow the police to crackdown on the sale of stolen goods. And Stellenbosch police intends to make full use of this newly established law. The Second-Hand Goods Act (Number 6 of 2009) gives the police more power to tackle thieves trading in second-hand goods. According to Captain Norman Davids, the commander of the Stellenbosch police firearms, liquor and second-hand goods unit (FLASH) said that they will be clamping down on the sale of second-hand goods. “According to the new act, the police now have more enforcement power – any person who buys stolen goods is now just as guilty as the person who stole it,” Davids said. “This new act will be a useful tool to serve our property-related crimes which has been wreaking

havoc on our economy. “It is now also illegal to buy burnt non-ferrous metals. Copper thieves tend to burn the cables before selling them. Buyers of these cables will now be prosecuted under the new act.” Davids has asked anyone who witnesses suspicious activities relating to non-ferrous metals in the policing area to report it at their nearest police station. “Also report anyone who tries

to deal in burnt copper cables. Metal dealers must be aware that if they buy any stolen goods, they will be prosecuted.” The new act also forces current second-hand dealers to have their trading licences renewed. Last week a workshop on the new act was held with representatives from Stellenbosch police, Telkom, Metrorail, Eskom,Transnet and Business Against Crime. An urgent meeting is scheduled for the Second-Hand Dealers Forum on Tuesday 22 May at 14:00 at the Stellenbosch police station recreation hall. A meeting with the various liquor forums will also be held soon. Watch the press for more details on this meeting. According to police spokesperson, Sergeant Natalie Martin, the station’s statistics shows a decline in copper theft during the past few months in comparison to last year’s statistics. However, the problem still persists, especially in rural areas.
Wheelie thieves caught THREE men were arrested this week when they were caught trying to steal a wheeliebin. The three men were arrested after an incident in Rokewood Ave, Die Boord on 24 April. A resident apparently saw one of the suspects taking the bin, contacted a Stellenbosch Watch Officer and described the suspect to him. While patrolling the area, the officer spotted three people, one of whom fitted the resident’s description, walking with a wheelie-bin.
The trio was stopped and apprehended by the officer, and the bin was positively identified by the resident as being the one which had been stolen. In the wake of the incident, Stellenbosch Watch CEO Glenn Schooling this advice to avoid having your bin stolen and to making finding it easier if it is: “Clearly mark your bin by painting your address on it and always keep it out of sight or in the backyard on days on which waste is not collected in your area.”

EXTENSION OF PAVING TENDER
Councillor appeals SAMANTHA VAN DEN BERG
A
COUNCILLOR of the Stellenbosch Civic Association (SCA) has appealed against a ruling made by the speaker at the last town council meeting. Clr Derrick Hendrickse this week appealed against a ruling made on an item that was brought before council as an additional item last Wednesday. The purpose of the item was to obtain approval to extend the tender of FCS Civils/ICC Joint Venture to complete the paving of the remainder of the Van der Stel parking area. The intention to extend the paving contract was advertised with a closing date for comments on 23 April. The value of the proposed extension was not included in the item that was brought before Council. Speaker Cyril Jooste explained that even though provincial treasury is of opinion that the item doesn’t need to be approved by council, it was submitted as a matter of transparency. Each party was allowed a ten minute caucus on the item. Hendrickse, however, voiced his concern that the item had not just been hastily brought to council
SCA councillor Derrick Hendrickse
for consideration, but that it didn’t even appear on the agenda. He was also concerned that money was being spent which was not allocated in the budget. According to him an item for the extension of this contract to the value of R1 million was submitted to the mayco meeting in March 2012, but was withdrawn. He then wrote to the acting municipal manager, David Beretti, asking him to provide him with the contract value of the original tender, as well as the value of the proposed extension. Beretti responded that the project started in 2009–’10 with the purchase of paving bricks to the value of R650 000. A service provider was appointed to pave 727 m² at a cost of R169 473,57. The budget was insufficient and the project was postponed to the 2010 –’11 financial year. Phase two of
the project received an approved budget from council to the value of R750 000. FCS Civils/ICC Joint Venture was appointed to do the outstanding work. The funds allowed 2 170 m² to be paved, leaving 3 215 m² unpaved. An extension was requested to complete the entire surface. According to Hendrickse, however, council approved an amount of R811 777 in the adjustments budget in February 2012 – an increase from the original R750 000 – whilst the February capital expenditure report indicated that R676 820 was already spent. This leaves R134 957 for the project and Hendrickse wanted to know where the additional moneys will come from, seeing that the item submitted to mayco in March for the extension of this contract was to the value of R1 million. The speaker, however, put the matter to vote without further debate and the majority of the council voted in favour of the extension. Hendrickse submitted his appeal on Wednesday. He felt that council has been put at risk and voted without knowing the cost implications and the source of financing. He requested a response to his appeal in 14 days.

) Die konsep-dokumente is by www.stellenbosch.org.za beskikbaar.

FREEDOM DAY INITIATIVE
Nóg ’n teiken:
MXit, NPC join forces T O celebrate Freedom Day the National Planning Commission (NPC) and MXit launched a national dialogue to encourage conversation among youths. The NPC dialogue, under the title “Our future, our plan”, aims to reach the massive youth audience who does not have easy access to traditional computers and the internet. The NPC hopes to provide a platform for many young South Africans, many of whom are economically excluded and, as a result, feel neglected and voiceless. MXit has over 50 million registered users, with an average of three million unique users on the platform each day. On a typical day MXit users send over 750 million messages. Last Thursday, on the eve of Freedom Day, NPC representatives engaged in a chat with users at the MXit offices in Stellenbosch. Minister of the Presidency, Trevor Manuel, joined the chat live from Johannesburg. “It is time for young people, as the new generation, to take over the baton from the youth of 1976 and shape the country you desire,” he said. He called on MXit users to become actively involved in the NPC MXit dialogue, which runs until the end of this month. Each week NPC representatives will participate in one hour chats with MXit users. The MXit NPC portal contains a brief illustrated summary of the 13 chapters of the draft national development plan. Each week the best contribution will receive a prize of 100 000 Moola (R1 000). The MXit user with the best contribution each week will win the opportunity to meet with Manuel, who chairs the NPC, Mr Cyril Ramaphosa, the deputy chairperson of the NPC and the other 24 commissioners to explain their winning ideas.
By this morning over 6 000 users will have joined the NPC MXit portal. During the one hour live dialogue, MXit users made a number of suggestions and comments. Alan Knott-Craig, the CEO of MXit, said: “I have read the draft national development plan and its vision is of a country that I would like my children to grow old in. “We are excited that the NPC has approached us and will make every effort to make sure that this dialogue reaches our users. I would urge them to make use of this wonderful opportunity to shape the future of our country.”

“’n

IN MEMORIAM
Johan Marais
Foto: Verskaf

Flower power! AUTUMN is show time for chrysanthemums in the Boland. On Saturday the Stellenbosch Horticultural and Industrial Society will celebrate its 50th anniversary, which includes the National Chrysanthemum Society’s annual exhibition by Western Cape growers in the Stellenbosch town hall. Wallace Adams, one of the oldest members of the society, remembers the Stellenbosch town hall as the place where the coloured community used to proudly display their hobbies through exhibitions. “The men proudly brought their flowers, birds and pets; women brought decorative cakes, needlework, sowing work, etc. to demonstrate their gifts and talents. In February was the Dahlia show; at the of end April, early May it was time for the Chrysanthemum show and many other shows kept the community proudly together.” The Stellenbosch Horticultural and Industrial Society - a registered member of the National Chrysanthemum Society of Great Britain and the National Horticultural and Industrial Society of South Africa (WC) - was established in 1962 to grow the largest, the best and most perfect chrysanthemums in all available cultivars. Growers receive no formal training, but through workshops, regular communication and support amongst fellow growers, they succeed, year after year, in producing their beautiful crysanthemums. After a period of absence, the chrysanthemum show is back in the town hall where it belongs. Why not pop in on Saturday and see this magnificent display of flowers, which for nine months has been nurtured with love and meticulous care.
Attitude adjustment is needed Marlene Milani, writes: It is with great concern that I read the article by Professors Louis Jonker and Jeremy Punt and wish to respond as follows: Yes, God loves the sinner, but hates the sin and that needs to be our attitude as well. We are saved by grace through faith by the atoning blood of Jesus – that is turning to God in repentance and receiving His forgiveness and strength to overcome. It is
clear in the scriptures that in the life to come there is a great divide – the story of the rich man and Lazarus in the bosom of Abraham. (Luke 15:19-31). Imagine having to look into someone’s eyes and hear them say: “Why did you not tell me that homosexuality is wrong and that I needed to repent and turn away from it and that it will be a difficult path, but the church will be there to help me.”
Is anyone even there? ‘Vramaarnet’, via www.Eikestadnuus.com, writes: Your article “Permit is nie misbruik” on page 10 of the 20 April 2012 edition refers. Has Mr Neville Langenhoven ever
phoned the 021 808 8890 number after hours? How many times does it ring before being answered? How many times does he have to phone before he gets through?

Measure society by its Sculpture treatment of animals dressed for the winter Caroline Hirst, Uniepark, writes: Yesterday we lost our beloved 15-month-old German Shepherd in a very sad accident right outside our home. That she should not have been in the road is a foregone conclusion, but that she was killed is extremely sad as the story might have had a different ending had the circumstances worked for instead of against her. Having undergone extensive training and with responsible human ownership, she was 99,5% gate trained. We could walk or drive out of the gate and she would remain inside. However on Monday as I opened the gate to leave for work, she bolted out after two “rondloper” dogs in the road outside our house. Being a young dog – and therefore impulsive a bit like young children – she did not heed my recall. These two dogs were not strays, they had collars, but their owners saw fit to allow them to roam the streets. When she realised was outside, she turned to come back in, but was hit by an Isuzu Frontier travelling up Unie Road at about 45-50km/h. Had the driver been concentrating, he should have noticed not one, but three dogs in the street, and could have slowed down. I say could have, as there were no other cars in the vicinity and it would have been easy to slow down or even come to a halt. However, he did not and hit our beloved Sheba. She didn’t stand a chance, as she was hit by the front wheel and then went under
it, being rolled over by the impact of the car. Worst – and very traumatic as my daughter and I witnessed it – of all was that the driver did not stop after he hit our dog, but continued to drive as if nothing had happened. Sheba was lying in the road, yelping in pain, but he was seemingly oblivious and uncaring about the drama that had unfolded. We rushed to her aid, but sadly she died in the vet’s consulting room 10 minutes later. This is an appeal to the residents of Uniepark to be aware that dogs and children live here and to drive a little more slowly in the vicinity of the houses. The speed bumps have not deterred drivers, as many have 4x4 vehicles with good suspension systems and, therefore, they do not need to slow down for the bumps. I would also like to ask pet owners to not allow their dogs to roam free. Please take them for walks so that they do not need to wander around to get their daily exercise. I would furthermore like to thank the very kind and compassionate lady from Onder-Papegaaiberg who witnessed the accident for being prepared to be involved in a world where so few are willing to do so. Thank you to our friends and neighbours for all your calls, messages and tokens of love and care. As for the driver – who later came round to inquire how the dog was doing and to tell us that he really loves animals – humane or inhumane? Let the reader be the judge.

Incidents ‘blown out of proportion’ Paula Liebenberg Pasquet writes on Facebook: In defence of the Traffic Department and the complaints about service there, I have to say that I have always had a pleasant experience (in the four years that I live in Stellenbosch). I have never had to wait
more than 10 minutes to be helped and the Information/ Help Desk has always been manned by somebody. Did the readers know that vehicle registration can be as painless as sending a cheque to the department who will in turn mail you your licence? I am sure there are other ways
of doing a payment too. If we are better informed of our options, it will make life much easier rather than to complain. It’s good to complain to ensure that problems are solved and service delivery is improved, but let’s not take a few isolated incidents and blow them out of proportion.

TO EAT OR NOT TO EAT: ANC CAKE QUESTION THE custom of dignitaries of the African National Congress (ANC) to celebrate important milestones by eating cake and drinking champagne on stage has elicited negative reaction Soyiso Maliti of.Eikestadnuus went to find out how Stellenboschers feel about this custom.
Willemien Brümmer: “It re minds us of Marie Antoinette, Queen of France during the French Revolution, who oblivious ly told her peasants to ‘eat cake’ after they’d run out of bread. This is metaphorical to how the ANC has gone the route of enriching themselves, while not regarding the poor.” Pics: Soyiso Maliti
Prof Amanda Gouws at the De partment of Political Science, SU: “It’s merely symbolic of a birthday. However, the poor may think they’re being excluded. And rightly so, be cause the ANC has become known as a party of selfenrichment be cause of certain politicians’ behav iour. If you consider that at least 18 million people in this country live off R10 or less a day, then the fact that they eat cake in front of their voters is absurd.”
Zanele Solomon: “In our culture, it’s indecent to eat something and not share it with the poor, and what the ANC did smacks of a lack of Ubuntu. This is not just about the cakes they’ve been eating, it’s beyond that. It’s about how transpar ent they’ve been in enriching them selves. I’m sure the cost of those cakes could cover needs in many poor fami lies. It’s sickening.”
Masixole Mtengwane: “I don’t think it’s wasting money if the amount spent on these celebrations is sponsored funds. However, if it comes from the tax payers’ pockets, then that’s just prepos terous and unfair.”
Khangelani Mfeketho: “It’s obvi ously wrong to have people eating in front of others, especially if it’s a scenario where the rich are eating in front of the same poor people who put them in pow er – they enriched themselves and left others out. Arranging ANC cakes must cost a lot of money. They could use that money to give to the poor if they cared.”
Amelia Williams: “It’s just not right, you can’t justify eating cake in front of people who elected you. It’s even worse if they are not getting any of the cake. Unfortunately, cake is a luxury item which not everyone can afford.”

Insight into slavery with Spier’s new audio tour SPIER Wine Estate recently launched its Gables Audio Tour, a fictional account of the reality of life on a Cape wine farm in the early part of the 19th Century. The story was researched and written by acclaimed playwright Brett Bailey. Visitors to Spier hire a headset and an audio device, and are
guided around the farmstead to various points where the story unfolds. Gables is narrated by Sannie de Goede, the ghost of a fictional slave on the eve of her freedom. Set in 1836, the audio tour offers insights into the dying days of a colonial society that relied on slavery.
Slaves were emancipated in 1834 but only walked free on 1 December 1838, after serving a fouryear “apprenticeship” for their freedom. Guests follow the map and wooden signposts around the farm to numbered stations with red chairs where they can sit and listen to the relevant chapter.

Daarmee saam is 26 suiwelprodukte met die gesogte Qualitékwaliteitsmerk bekroon, terwyl 90 suiwelprodukte as Suid-Afrikaanse kampioene aangewys is by verlede week se DuPont Qualitétoekenningsdinee.
Volgens Giliomee is opleiding ’n baie belangrike faktor. Ander uitdagings is toe-
Giliomee is realisties optimisties.

HE fact that Maties is still producing some of the best swimmers in South Africa is nothing short of a miracle. Stellenbosch University’s (SU) swimming coach Pierre de Roubaix is not messing around with words when it comes to the still dry SU swimming pool. The pool at Coetzenburg has been empty since 2010, when it was decided that structural damage to the pool excessive and that a new pool had to be built. The latest development in the battle to get the swimming pool built is an online petition that has already been signed by more than 300 people. Some of the biggest names in international sport such as World champions Conrad Stoltz and Christoph Sauser, Olympic champion Jan Frodeno and Ironman athlete Jodie Swallow have added their names to the list. This petition follows the qualification of Maties swim star Heerden Herman for the Olympic Games. He has to travel to the University of the Western Cape to train. Five other South African universities have Olympicsize (50 m) swimming pools. “The fact that we (Maties) still have some of the best Olympic and Paralympic swimmers in the country is a testi-
This was one of the many opportunities SU’s students used to voice their concern about the absence of the swimming pool. The banner was visible on live televi sion during a broadcast of a Varsity Cup rugby match.
mony to the extraordinary willpower from a team within Maties Sport,” said De Roubaix. At the end of 2011 a project plan for the new swimming pool and an aqua-centre was submitted to the board of the Stellenbosch University Sport Performance Institute (SUSPI). The project team was asked to further investigate the financial sustainability. Prof Julian Smith, SU’s Vice Rector of Community Interaction and Personnel, confirmed that university management was fully aware of the frustration caused by the absence of a pool, but asked that the mag-
nitude of the project be taken into consideration. “We are looking at the possibility of building – as a first phase – a functional swimming pool followed by the rest.” According to De Roubaix their situation is desperate. “As head coach I would love to see Stellenbosch getting an Olympic-size pool – like five other universities in SA – but at this stage I just want the university to make a decision! “The student community (28 000 students), the sporting community and prospective students deserve an answer. Even if it is one that we don’t like.”
What the top athletes have to say: Bekeruitdeling:
SOME of the biggest names in sport have signed the petition for a swimming pool at Stellenbosch University. They include World champions Conrad Stoltz, Christoph Sauser; Olympic champion Jan Frodeno and multisport king Dan Hugo. Here is what some of the petitioners had to say: Jodie Swallow, United Kingdom: “I am a World 70,3 Ironman champion and Olympian for Great Britain and pro-
fessional triathlete. I have chosen to come to Stellenbosch repeatedly to train over 10 years. Now that the pool situation has worsened and worsened we are really struggling with pools. In order to be a world class athlete you need to have access to world class facilities and the ONE area Stellenbosch fails is its swimming pools. It is ESSENTIAL (that) university steps up to the plate.” Catherine Jameson, UK: “Trained in Stellenbosch in
January and February as I am a triathlete and it was brilliant but having an Olympic 50 m pool would be amazing and it would attract more athletes to come and train in the area.” Kate Roberts, South Africa: “I am a triathlete who regularly trains in Stellenbosch and access to better swimming facilities is critical.” Visit www.thepetitionsite.com/811/099/996/olympicsize-50m-swimming-pool-foruniversity-of-stellenbosch.

Jilly bids farewell after 20 years JILLY Dix, manager of Maties hockey, is leaving the club after two decades of service in various capacities. She will be succeeded by Jenny King, the current Maties women’s first team coach and former coach of the national women’s team. Dix played goalkeeper for Maties, Western Province, South Africa u.21 and the senior national team. In 1992 Dix became one of the first members of the newly formed Maties Hockey Club. She started working at the club full-time in 1995. “I have been in Stellenbosch for 20 years and I simply felt that it was the right time to move on. I am still young enough to make
this kind of move and I didn’t want to wait another five years and miss the opportunity for change. I’m looking forward to spending some time at home and taking a break!” Jackie Wiese, Director of Maties Sport, worked with Dix from the get-go. “Jilly’s presence and influence at the Maties Hockey Club will undoubtedly be missed. Her quiet, yet assured, leadership style has provided a steady influence at management level and she has been instrumental in providing a stable platform from which the club can move forward,” Wiese said. “We at Maties Sport wish her all the best for the future.”

Veral as jy kwaad is!”
