IKSVERMOEDENDE klante van die De Jonker Kwikspar in Morkelstraat was vandeesweek die teiken van gewapende rowers. Twee van die klante wat Dinsdag by die winkel was ten tyde van die rooftog, het vertel van hul ondervinding. Venter Goosen en Yolandi Faul het om 19:15 by die winkel aangegaan om ’n paar inkopies te doen. “Daar het twee mans by die yskaste gestaan, met blikkies Coke in die hand. Hulle het vreemd gelyk, maar ek het toe weer daarvan vergeet,” vertel Venter. “Toe ons besig was om te betaal

het ons gesien hoe die mans die sekuriteitswag aan sy knuppel tot binne die winkel trek. Dit het so half gelyk of hulle net speel. “Die volgende oomblik het dieselfde man sy hand in my baadjiesak en toe in my broeksak gesteek en my beursie gevat. Hy het met die knuppel in sy hand gestaan en ek en Yolandi het albei na die knuppel gegryp. “Dis toe dat ’n tweede man agter my sy rewolwer op my rig en sê: ‘I’ll shoot you, you p--s.’. Ek het my hande in die lug gesteek.” Hulle is toe gedwing om op die grond te lê. Yolandi het in die holte van die toonbank geklim en gesien hoe hulle die bestuurder dwing om die kluis oop te maak en die kasregisters leeg te maak.

“Die sekuriteitswag kon niks doen nie. Hy moes sy hande voor hom uitsteek en bly lê. Hy kon nie eers die paniekknoppie druk nie,” onthou sy. Yolandi het intussen van vrees begin huil. “Een van die mans was eers baie kalm en het gesê alles gaan okei wees, maar toe begin hy op my skree: ‘Shut up, you n--i.’.” Volgens die Stellenbosch-polisiewoordvoerder lt. Natalie Martin, het drie mans met kepse op die Spar om 18:50 binnegekom. “Hulle het die bestuurder met ’n vuurwapen gedreig en gevra waar die kluis is. Die bestuurder het dit oopgemaak en hulle het die kontant en sigarette in sakke gegooi. Nóg drie mans het die

winkel binnegekom en die kasregisters leeggemaak en sigarette van die rakke afgeneem.” Die rowers het egter nie daar opgehou nie. Hulle het al die klante in die winkel gedwing om hul beursies en selfone ook te oorhandig voor hulle die pad gevat het. “Geen skote is afgevuur nie en gelukkig is niemand beseer nie, maar die slagoffers was erg getraumatiseer en ons het gesorg dat hulle berading ontvang na die voorval,” sê Martin. N armoured cash van was the target of an armed robbery in Plankenbrug this weekend. According to local police spokesperson Lieutenant Natalie Martin, the incident happened outside Liquor King in George Blake Street, Plankenbrug industrial area. “The armed guards were coming out of the store with a case full of money when they heard someone screaming from behind. “When the guard looked back, he saw two men, both of them pointing firearms at him.” The guard holding the case dropped it to the ground, and one of the robbers picked it up. “The robbers then ran towards the Du Toit Railway Station, where they allegedly

IN MEMORIAM EEN van die land se radiobaanbrekers en ’n geliefde skakelman in die WesKaap, Hennie Pietersen, is verlede Donderdag in sy woning op Stellenbosch op 74-jarige leeftyd oorlede. Hennie was wyd bekend as SuperSport se skakelbeampte in die Wes- en SuidKaap, ’n posisie wat hy meer as 14 jaar lank beklee het. Hy was ook verantwoordelik vir SuperSport se deelname aan die Universiteit Stellenbosch se Woordfees. Dit is egter sy loopbaan in die radiowese wat Hennie bekend en gelief gemaak het. Hy het kort ná skool, in 1957, by die SAUK begin werk. Sy lewensideaal is twee jaar later vervul toe hy omroeper geword het. Sy liefde vir perdewedrenne het hom gehelp om nog ’n droom te vervul, naamlik dié van kommentator. Hennie was ook ’n liefhebber en kenner van ernstige musiek. ’n Groot hoogtepunt was ook Hennie se rol in die totstandkoming van Radio Goeie Hoop. Hennie was ’n besonder veelsydige mens. NEW partnership between the Western Cape department of agriculture, Stellenbosch Municipality and local NGOs aims to sterilise about 70% of the cats and dogs in Kayamandi. Western Cape premier Helen Zille, agriculture MEC Gerrit van Rensburg, and Stellenbosch mayor Conrad Sidego attended the launch of the programme in Kayamandi on Monday. Zille explained that this pilot project would be replicated in other areas if it proved successful. “The government could only afford to do one big sterilisation project, and Kayamandi is the perfect area to launch the pilot project because of the close cooperation already taking place between the municipality and NGOs.” The provincial government has contributed R500 000 for the project, and will be providing technical expertise. Stellenbosch municipality has committed R400 000 to the Animal Welfare Society (AWS) for use in the programme. The first phase of the programme involves an animal cen-

HE world needs a vision of a better future in which the two to three billion poor people are assured of a decent life, employment and the freedom to develop equitably. This was the opinion of finance minister Pravin Gordhan during his welcoming address to delegates at the 16th World Economic History Congress (WEHC 2012) in Stellenbosch on Monday. The congress was hosted by Stellenbosch University from 9 to 13 July. This year’s congress, with the theme “The Roots of Development”, is the first ever to have been held in Africa. It was attended by some 800 delegates from right across the world. According to Gordhan, the global financial crisis of 2008 was a “catalytic event” – altering our understanding of how the world works. “It accentuated the political, social and economic fault lines in our global society. “It also raised questions about the sustainability of the present path of growth and development.” Some of these focus on the development of widespread inequality, growing unemployment – especially among the youth – and the growing gap between the political and economic elites. According to Gordhan, the present crisis has also highlighted some interesting trends. He said that whilst the financial crisis might drag on for “as long as 20 years” in developed countries, the bigger emerging economies have become the new engines in economic growth and reduction of poverty. He used Brazil, China and India as examples of major developing countries that have shown resilience in the face of uncertain global prospects. He also pointed out that African countries are in better shape today after improving the management of their economies – something that is in sharp contrast with the ’80s and early ’90s. “The Asian crisis in 1998 provided important lessons that have contributed to the stronger developing countries today. It shows that

history does matter. Lessons have been learnt, but not in all cases.” He added that the crisis has also asked of us to challenge the silos within which we operate. “We now need to draw from different disciplines to gain a better understanding of the world we live in. Psychology, sociology, politics and history all have vital perspectives on the crisis and its consequences.” Gordhan said that whilst there are many possible routes to economic and social progress, it is clear that “one size doesn’t fit all”. “You sit on the southern tip of a continent that is very optimistic about its future. Sub-Saharan Africa is growing rapidly, and Africa is on the cusp of a major multi-dimensional transformation. “This is the age of emerging economies, and we have to ask what it is that South Africa, and other countries caught in a pattern of unequal and inadequate growth, need to do in order to achieve inclusive and rapid economic participation and development.”

Ek glo in Suid-Afrika en haar toekoms en ek glo dat ons in hierdie stryd ook sukses sal behaal.” Só het oudhoofregter Arthur Chaskalson Woensdagaand by die 25ste konferensie van die Internasionale Vereniging vir Konflikbestuur (IACM) gesê. Die Afrikasentrum vir Geskilbeslegting by die Universiteit Stellenbosch Bestuurskool (USB) het dié konferensie van 11 tot 14 Julie op die Spier-wynlandgoed aangebied. Dit is die eerste keer dat dié toonaangewende geleentheid in Afrika aangebied word. Chaskalson was die voormalige hoofregter van Suid-Afrika en die eerste regterpresident van Suid-Afrika se nuwe Konstitusionele Hof. Hy het konferensiegangers by die amptelike openingsgeleentheid Woensdagaand toegespreek. Sy toespraak het gehandel oor die onderhandelings rakende Suid-Afrika se grondwet voor 1994 en die land se oorgang van apartheid na demokrasie. Volgens Chaskalson is Suid-Afrika vandag, 18 jaar ná die eerste demokratiese verkiesing in 1994, ’n veel beter plek as wat dit gedurende die apartheidsjare was. Dít nieteenstaande tekens van kommerwekkende onstabiliteit – ’n stryd wat steeds oorwin moet word. “Suid-Afrika is ’n beter plek, hoewel

daar steeds armoede, groot ongelykhede tussen arm en ryk, ’n hoë misdaadsyfer en gerugte van korrupsie is.” Volgens Chaskalson was diegene wat die grondwet destyds onderhandel het, met ’n geskiedenis van onder meer kolonialisme en apartheid, wit rykdom en swart armoede gekonfronteer. Die uitdaging vir hulle was egter om ’n manier te vind om diegene wat deur die verlede uitgesluit is te bemagtig en hulle politiese, sosiale en ekonomiese aandeel in die samelewing te bevorder. Dít terwyl hulle terselfdertyd ook ’n manier moes vind om die vrese van diegene wat bevoordeel was, te besweer. Hy het bygevoeg dat dit aan almal betrokke duidelik was dat ’n nuwe politiese bedeling slegs moontlik is as ’n nuwe grondwet aangeneem word. Ten spyte van vertragings, kwaai woorde en ’n spannende politiese atmosfeer, is ’n nierassige grondwet eindelik in Januarie 1994 aangeneem. Volgens Chaskalson is dít, gegewe die land se geskiedenis, ’n merkwaardige prestasie. Hy meen dit sou egter nie moontlik gewees het as daar nie die “politieke wil was om oplossings vir die konflik in die land te vind nie”. Hoewel die land nou ’n “beter plek is” het hy steeds gewaarsku teen die kommerwekkende tekens van onstabiliteit soos armoede, gewelddadige optogte, misdaad en korrupsie. “Hierdie kwessies hou enorme uitdagings vir ons in.”

En daar is te kies en te keur wat organisasies en projekte in Stellenbosch betref! Van kinders tot troeteldiere, van ongeletterde volwassenes tot hospies-pasiënte, van groentetuine tot brei-groepe en leë biblioteek-rakke – die uitdagings is groot, maar die bevrediging van betrokkenheid des te meer. Hoe groter die gemeenskap se betrokkenheid, hoe meer volhoubaar is die organisasies, én hoe meer boustene word vir nasiebou en ’n gedeelde erfenis gelê. Dus, reik uit na jou naaste, want wat jy vir jou naaste doen, doen jy eintlik vir jouself.

Raadslid ewig dankbaar EK het vir jare lank al ’n probleem met my heupe en kon tot dusver nie die nodige operasie ondergaan om my te help om beter te loop nie. A heartfelt tribute to our caring clan FOR the first time ever, the Western Cape government has made funds available for a mass pet sterilisation campaign that will benefit both the pets (dogs and cats) and people of Kayamandi. This township was chosen for the pilot project in the Western Cape because of its size – population estimate 40 000 in 8 500 dwellings – and its proximity to infrastructure and the Department of Agriculture: State Veterinary Resources at Elsenburg. Another reason is the active support of Stellenbosch Municipality for animal welfare, and the Stellenbosch Animal Welfare Society’s reputation and clinical success. I would like to express my gratitude for this wonderful gesture as follows: I guess that I am an old salt.

But today – this Monday – something stirred and moved me: a clan gathering of all our folk at Ikaya. All with a common purpose – the welfare of our animals as part of the welfare of our people. We must have had a hundred people there. All attentive, all caring, all committed and all understanding the task: to address the elemental cause of animal suffering – uncontrolled breeding. And here under one roof were our people. They listened to quiet words from leaders who spoke our language – Xhosa, Afrikaans and English – with the warmth of laughter that comes from friends of common purpose. IE Stellenbosch Universiteitskoor is die afgelope naweek as die beste gemengde koor (mans- en vrouestemme) by die Wêreld-Koorspele in Cincinnati (VS) aangewys. Dié koor, onder leiding van André van der Merwe, het 93,5 % in hierdie kategorie behaal. Hulle is ook as die wêreldkampioen in die kategorie Musica Sacra (gewyde musiek) met ’n punt van 96,88 % aangewys. Die koor het ook in ’n derde kategorie – gewilde musiek – deelgeneem waar hulle met slegs ’n persentasiepunt tweede gekom het. Hulle punt was 91,25 %. Dit is die eerste keer dat die koor in dié spesifieke kategorie deelneem. Die Wêreld-Koorspele word as die Olimpiese Spele vir koormusiek beskou en word elke tweede

jaar gehou. Hierdie jaar was dit die sewende koorspele en dit het vanaf 4 Julie plaasgevind. Dit was vanjaar die derde keer wat die US-koor aan die spele deelgeneem het. Tydens die 2008-kompetisie, wat in Oostenryk gehou is, is die US-koor aangewys as wêreldkampioen in die kategorie Musica Sacra en het hulle ook ’n tweede plek in die kategorie Gospel en Spiritual behaal. In 2010 in China het die koor die titel “Choir of the World” gewen en is ook as wêreldkampioen in die kategorieë Mixed Choirs en Musica Contemporanea aangewys. Die Universiteit Stellenbosch se koor is in 1936 gestig. Dié koor het sy 75ste bestaansjaar in 2011 gevier.

This increasing concentration of businesses in the area has led professional services firm Deloitte to open an office in the heart of Stellenbosch. Deloitte is traditionally associated with auditing, but has in recent years expanded to include financial services such as financial

advice and strategic planning for businesses. The head of the Stellenbosch office, Michael van Wyk, is excited about the potential in the area. “I think that we are going to see a lot of growth in the next 10 years,” Van Wyk said at the launch of the Stellenbosch office last week. “There are young people here doing exciting things,” he said, referring to students and young graduates from the university. He believes that “the next big thing” will probably be born from the innovative work that is being done at Stellenbosch University.

Harcourts Platinum hits No 2 I

T has been an exciting ride for Harcourts’ top Western Cape office – Harcourts Platinum from Somerset West. Challenging economic times and a depressed property market haven’t stood in their way. In fact, according to principal Steve Caradoc-Davies, tougher times like these allow those who really do things differently to stand out. ”In a booming property market almost anyone can sell property,” says Caradoc-Davies. “But in a tough market it’s the real estate companies that take the initiative, innovate new selling methods and service offerings, and find better ways to market property and attract buyers, that really stand out. Customers can see the difference, and select these companies that can achieve results when others don’t.” Much has changed in Harcourts Platinum over the past five years, when they were positioned 26th in the group, then called Homenet. CARS need anti-freeze in winter and so, it seems, do many potential homebuyers who find themselves stalled now in the search for a suitable property. “Part of the problem is that there is just so much to choose from in the current market that many prospective buyers worry about missing something better – and possibly cheaper – if they make a purchasing decision too soon,” says Jan Davel, MD of the RealNet estate agency group. “On the other hand, some buyers just freeze up at the idea of having to make a long-term financial commitment. Even though they are keen to become homeowners and believe they have found the right property, they just can’t bring themselves to sign an offer.” And, he says, since the purchase of a home is one of the most important and farreaching financial decisions most people will ever make, this state of uncertainty is not something they should ignore. “You should never discount your instincts, but take the time to backtrack and find out what is causing the conflict between wanting to buy and being unable to make a decision. In our experience, the root cause is usually a concern about money, and fortunately there are several constructive ways to address this concern and proceed with your buying plans. “You can start, for example, by asking an agent you trust to show you some more homes in a lower price bracket. It is prudent to buy for less than you can actually afford and create a buffer for yourself in

case of financial emergency, over and above the margin most mortgage lenders are now building into their loan qualification calculations to ensure borrowers will be able to cope with the rising costs of home ownership and maintenance, as well as possible interest rate increases.” Or, says Davel, if you’re intending to buy primarily because you plan to start a family, perhaps you need to reassess your ability to accomplish two big financial goals at the same time. “It is hard to cope with a mortgage and burgeoning family expenses all at once – and constantly having to worry about cash flow does tarnish the pleasure of home ownership. “The answer is to be realistic at the outset about how your financial pie is – and will be – sliced up, and if necessary to set your current sights on a less expensive home that will mean a smaller home loan repayment every month and the chance to eliminate other debts and improve your cash flow. That way, you’ll be able to buy and retain your peace of mind.” And finally, he notes, if what you’re worried about is the future of the property market and its possible effects on your investment, you need to know that any home you can comfortably afford, is in good condition and in a good neighbourhood, will be a good investment over time. “What you should be more concerned about is buying your own property and starting to build wealth as soon as possible instead of continuing to pay rent while you sit on the fence.”

The ability we are referring to is the ability to listen to their customers’ needs and then determine the service, product, or offering that will help them best achieve their needs. What does the customer want? Whether a seller, buyer, tenant, or landlordMANDATE – just what do you want to achieve? Bulbs will soon beam from sunny spots I don’t know if you are keen on walking but I am. I love the gentle rhythm of a measured plod and the slow passage through a landscape. I particularly delight in the all the things I can see or touch, and the smells: funny bumbling beetles, fluid sjongololos with over-countable, tickly legs like the ones we had in our garden when I was a child, damp earth, curious pebbles and jewel drops of water trapped in the hairs of long grasses. What thrills me most of all is finding familiar flowers in the wild. Most of us grow South African plants without even knowing that they are ours, especially when there’s been a commercial coup and other countries have taken over and hybridised our local stuff. Take all the dazzling geraniums the Swiss cultivate in their window boxes – originally ours (and actually Pelargonium, not really geranium at all)! And Los Angeles’s official tree (the coral or Erythrina caffra) and flower (Strelitzia reginae) – both ours. And topping the list of most popular flowers for bridal bouquets – Zantedeschia (the Arum lily) and Freesia – home-grown bulbs from the Western Cape. Countless other familiar and much-loved bulbs are South African. The long list can be roughly

divided along three lines according to rainfall: winter, summer and year-round. Appropriate for now, seeing that our winter weather is finally here in no uncertain terms, are the winter-growing bulbs most of which grow naturally in the Western Cape. In the summer months they lie dormant when conditions are hot, dry and harsh. When the temperatures drop and the soil cools they produce new vegetative growth (that’s why we planted in the autumn) followed by very rapid development in the winter months when the weather is wet. Come spring, they are set to burst into flower, just as we really need cheering up after what always seems like endless cold. Luckily for us, most of our prettiest winter bulbs are perfectly happy in gardens all over our country. The trick is to try to copy the conditions they like best: a sunny aspect, perfect drainage (in the wild most of them occur in nutrient-poor soils which drain rapidly), and damp soil but not a soggy swamp in which they will rot. (Drainage can be improved by mixing the soil with lots of compost and some sand. A slightly sloping site is ideal too as it will allow for good water runoff.). So, here’s what I think I shall do this winter. When the weather is

really wicked, I’m going to do my best to tell myself that spring comes quickly in our land of sunshine and in no time at all my bulbs are going to be beaming at me from all the sunny spots in my rather shady garden. Furthermore, I aim to spend some time planning my summer garden. I’m going to buy all the prettiest gardening magazines and while I’m lying low, I shall page through my favourite gardening books and browse around on the Internet. I shall dream a lot and entertain very beneficial visions of the summer bulbs I love (more about those in the months to come). And if I am lucky, I shall treat myself come spring to some walks along the wild paths of the Cape where I shall be on the lookout for Babiana (baboon flowers), Bulbinella (cat’s tails), Ixia (wand flowers), Gladiolus, Lachenalia (Cape cowslips), Ornithogalum (chincherinchees), Sparaxis (harlequin flowers), Tritonia (blazing stars), Veltheimia (forest lilies) and Watsonia. And when I see them out there or in the gardens around me, I shall be reminded all over again of how wondrous and perfect flowers are, a perpetual miracle and free gift of our Blue Planet. - Rian Swanepoel, Hadeco Bulbs

US help eiland bewaar

TUDENTE en navorsers aan die Universiteit Stellenbosch (US) steun pogings wat daarop gefokus is om Robbeneiland se toekomstige ontwikkeling en die bestuur van sy natuurlike omgewing te verseker. Robbeneiland word deur Unesco as ’n Wêrelderfenisgebied gelys. Die universiteit se departement vir Bewaringsekologie en Entomologie (fakulteit AgriWetenskappe) het in Maart 2010 ’n langtermyn monitering-, navorsing- en opleidingsamewerkingooreenkoms met die bestuur van Robbeneiland gesluit. In ’n poging om dié verbintenis verder te verstewig, is daar onlangs ’n memorandum van verstandhouding vir samewerking deur die eiland-bestuur en die fakulteit onderteken. Hierdie sinvolle ooreenkoms sal die weg vir ’n langtermyn verbintenis tussen Robbeneiland en die departement baan. Benewens die feit dat Robbeneiland ’n Wêrelderfenisgebied is, is dit ’n gewilde bestemming vir plaaslike en internasionale toeriste wat graag die gevangenis wil besigtig waar oudpresident Nelson Mandela en ander vryheidstryders aangehou is. Daar is in die vele jare wat die eiland reeds bewoon word, heelwat stampe en stote aan sy biodiversiteit uitgedeel. Die mees noemenswaardige van almal is die indringerplante en dierespe-

Tot op datum is daar reeds vyf navorsingstogte na die eiland voltooi en is data oor ’n reeks biologiese en sosiale kenmerke versamel. “Ons is opgewonde oor hierdie oefening in gemeenskapsbetrokkenheid en die moontlikhede wat dit bied om die volgende geslag omgewingsbestuurders te kan oplei deur navorsing wat die sosiale en ekologiese dimensies van Robbeneiland monitor,” het professor Karen Esler, die departementshoof gesê.

Hans Baumberger turns 83 next month, and he still has lively conversations with the locals, telling stories about his younger days as a professional hunter in Africa. Uncle Hans, as he is affectionately known, is originally from Switzerland and started working in Malawi shortly after he qualified as an auto-engineer. There he started hunting with friends, and two years after moving to Africa, he changed careers to start hunting crocodiles for a living. He pages through an old black and white album, telling stories as he goes. “This was the biggest crocodile I ever shot. The Entrepreneurial Seed Fund Programme has been established by the CWDM, and now funded by Nedbank, to provide limited grant funding within the district to SMME’s that require seed capital in order to establish themselves and/or grow. Funding will mainly be allocated in the form of a grant in kind, for example by purchasing equipment or supplies by the District Municipality on behalf of the SMME.

The Fund will be managed directly by the CWDM through the Directorate: Local Economic Development. The Fund will be governed in terms of the Municipal Finance Management Act. Service Level Agreements will be entered into between all the Entrepreneurial Seed Fund beneficiaries and the CWDM, in terms of which monthly reports will be submitted by the firms. Where grants are provided in kind, the purchasing of the goods will take place in terms of the CWDM Supply Chain Management Policy.

Proteas work out on Calder’s EyeGym EUNICE VISAGIE

HE South African netball team paid a visit to the Stellenbosch Academy of Sport (SAS) this past week. And during their time there, the players had a session with Dr Sherylle Calder’s world-famous EyeGym. Calder is known for the work she’s done with the rugby teams of England, New Zealand and South Africa. She’s also worked with the SA cricket team. EyeGym is a piece of online visual training software. The technology behind EyeGym is leading edge, and the training

drills are the result of many years’ experience of coaching visual performance skills to elite athletes in numerous sports around the world. It is the only program of its kind. The Proteas played three test matches against Northern Ireland this past week in Cape Town, and won the series. Coach Elize Kotzé and her team were highly impressed with the facilities at the SAS. The academy opened its doors in January. The SAS is already home to a number of sport teams, including the South African Sevens rugby team.

Geen SA Skole span gekies EUNICE VISAGIE

IE besluit om nie ’n SuidAfrikaanse Skole-rugbyspan ná afloop van die Cravenweek aan te kondig nie, neem so bietjie van die prestige weg van dié gewilde rugbyweek. Die Cravenweek loop môre (14 Julie) in Port Elizabeth ten einde. Daar is besluit dat daar nie vanjaar ’n SA Skole-span ná die afloop van die Cravenweek bekend gemaak gaan word nie. Ná afloop van die Cravenweek op 14 Julie sal wel ’n groep van 44 spelers gekies word. Dié groep sal deur die SA Skole keurders en hoë prestasie beamptes van SA Rugby gekies word en hulle sal dan die SA Skole Groep vir Uitnemendheid wees. Dié groep spelers sal dan op 28 Julie proewe speel waarna 28 spelers gekies sal word vir die drie wedstryde wat in Augustus teen Wallis, Frankryk en Engeland gespeel word. Enige bergfietsryer kan deelneem op die lekker baan met enkelspoor-paadjies tussen die wingerde. Aksie begin om 09:00. Die week is dit die beurt van die Kylemorerugbyklub.
