Jeugdagopwinding JEUGDAG (Saterdag 16 Junie) op Stellenbosch word vanjaar met hope pret-aktiwiteite vir jong mense gevier. Jeugdag het voorheen as Soweto-dag bekend gestaan en Saterdag sal die SuidAfrikaanse jeug landwyd bymekaar kom om dié dag te vier wat die geskiedkundige leerlingopstand in Soweto op 16 Junie 1976 herdenk. Die jeug het op dié dag in opstand gekom teen die regering se besluit om Afrikaans deels as onderrigtaal in plaaslike skole in te stel. Jeugdag herdenk veral die jong mense wat hul lewens in dié stryd verloor het. Op eie bodem herdenk die Universiteit Stellenbosch (US) vanjaar Jeugdag met die tema “Verander jou Wêreld!” Die Jeugdag-vieringe word van 13:00 tot 14:30 in die Universiteitsmuseum in Ryneveldstraat gehou en almal is welkom om dit by te woon. Die program sluit in sprekers soos Brad Brockman, die jeug en gemeenskapshoof by Equal Education en Wayde Groep, ’n Matie-student en mentor by Rachel’s Angels. Musiek-, sang- en poësie-items sal ook aangebied word. Rolene Liebenberg, US-bestuurder vir skolevennootskappe en koördineerder van die geleentheid, verduidelik dat die tema die jeug daaraan herinner dat dit hulle is wat die hoofagente van verandering in hul leefwêreld is. CLOETESVILLE / KAYAMANDI LOOP DEUR

Ongekende ‘tornado’ saai verwoesting SOYISO MALITI

IE afgelope naweek se uiterste weertoestande het onder meer huise uitmekaargeruk en vernietig in Cloetesville en Kayamandi. Afgerukte dakplate het verstrooi gelê tussen lamppale, huise, plakkershutte, kragkabels – selfs tot binne-in huise. Monique Lewis, ’n Cloetesville-inwoner wie se huis onder die reënstorm deurgeloop het, het gesien hoe haar motor ook deur die storm beskadig word. Sy vertel dat haar motor pas die vorige dag deur die paneelklopper aan haar terugbesorg is. “Ek was binne die huis en dit het hard gereën toe ek skielik ’n verskriklike harde slag gehoor het. Dit was harder as donderweer. My motor is verwoes. Ek het dit so pas laat regmaak, en nou gebeur dit!” Haar bure is ook deur die storm geraak. Die buurman langs Lewis, Gavin Jagers, het sy ervaring van die verwoesting só beskryf: “Ek was besig op my skootrekenaar en toe ek opkyk, het ek ’n dak sien vlieg na ons huis en dit het in ons oprit beland,” sê Jagers. “Ons huis is ook erg beskadig. My kamer lek nou as gevolg daarvan.” Die Cloetesville-polisie kon egter nie vasstel of dit ’n reënstorm of ’n tornado was nie. Die dak van Cloetesville-stadion het oor twee strate heen gevlieg en in die proses

die wonings van Jagers, Lewis en ander beskadig. Ander huise in die buurt het ook hul dakke as gevolg van die uiterste weerstoestande verloor. Kayamandi is ook getref en die nuus van dié slegte weer het soos ’n veldbrand onder die sosiale netwerke van Kayamandi se jeug versprei. Anga Bongono, ’n inwoner van Kayamandi se Costaland, se huis is ook deur die storm getref. Hy sê hy het ook ’n verskriklike, harde geluid gehoor en ’n “donker, mistige en wentelende kolom met goed wat daar rondom vlieg”, gesien. “Dit was onwerklik, ek was so bang gewees,” sê Bonongo. “Ek was besig om te ontspan in my huis toe my deur skielik teen ’n hengse spoed oopgeruk is en blare my huis ingewaai het.” Party huishoudings in Costaland is steeds sonder elektrisiteit. Die weer het ook verwoesting in Kayamandi se Sone O en Strongyard gesaai. OME women think a backstreet abortion is their only way out, but they’re placing their health – and even their lives – in danger. The laws controlling abortion in South Africa were amended in 1996 to give women the right to terminate their pregnancy if they choose to. In Stellenbosch, a total of 301 women exercised this right between April 2011 and March 2012. According to the Choice on Termination of Pregnancy Act 92 of 1996, implemented on 1 February 1997, women may seek the services of any trained doctor, nurse or midwife to have a pregnancy aborted during the first 12 weeks. From the 12th to the 20th week, an abortion can be performed if it endangers the woman’s mental or physical health; if the fetus is in danger of suffering from severe mental or physical abnormality; if the pregnancy was the result of rape or incest; or if the pregnancy will have a significant effect on the woman’s social or economic circumstances. Such an abortion may only be performed by a doctor. After the 20th week, a pregnancy can only be terminated if it endangers the mother’s life, if the fetus is severely malformed, or if there is risk of severe injury to the fetus. According to Sithembiso Magubane, spokesperson for the Western Cape Department of Health, legal termination of pregnancy can only take place at legally designated facilities. the Department of Health. Magubane said information about how backstreet abortions are done is scarce, and warned that the risks of having an illegal abortion are serious – and potentially fatal. “The dangers of illegal terminations include the perforation of the uterus and pelvic infection – and can even lead to death, bladder and bowel injury, and infertility.” Magubane continued, “The conditions under which terminations may take place are stipulated in the Choice on Termination of Pregnancy Act 92 of 1996 and Choice on Termination of Pregnancy Amendment Act 1 of 2008. “Public and private health facilities designated by the health minister offer

terminations under safe conditions. “The Western Cape Government is not only promoting legal termination of pregnancies, it is also encouraging the use of family planning methods to avoid unwanted pregnancies. “We encourage our clients to come to our facilities for a pregnancy test early in their pregnancy. This allows them to make a decision early. “If the pregnancy test is negative, they will be referred for family planning. If it’s positive, they are booked for antenatal care; if they are not sure, or do not want to proceed with the pregnancy, they are referred to a social worker for counselling. “In this way illegal abortions are avoided, as the women are informed of the services available.”

Mountain attack ends in arrest ANOTHER jogger has been attacked on Stellenbosch Mountain – but this time the woman fought back. Police spokesperson Lieutenant Natalie Martin said the student was running on Stellenbosch Mountain, behind Coetzenburg, at 10:30 on 2 June. “A young man came from behind and tried to hit her with a brick. She managed to avoid the attack and pushed him, then picked up the brick and managed to hit him on the left shoulder. He then ran off.” Stellenbosch University (SU) spokesperson Martin Viljoen said management place a high priority on the safety of their students and personnel, and was concerned to learn about the attack. “She was jogging when she was surprised by the attacker, who tried to hit her with a brick against her chest. She fought back and hit him with his own brick before he fled,” Viljoen said. A man – another student – rode up on a bicycle at that point and stopped to help. He walked with her to Vergenoegd, from where they called USBD. “The same male student noticed the attacker the next day on campus, and called campus security. “The attacker, a minor, was arrested and handed over to the police.” The university’s management praised the young man for his quick and attentive response, as well as his role in the arrest. The university appealed to the community to take the necessary precautions, and not to be soft targets by hiking on the mountain alone – rather go in groups. Lieutenant Martin confirmed that the suspect, whose name cannot be released as he is a minor, was arrested the day after the foiled attack. He was still wearing the same clothes. This was the second incident this year in which a woman running alone was attacked. A 17-year-old girl was attacked and raped earlier this year while on a solo run.

Too many public holidays? PUBLIC holidays are to be revised by the Commission for the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Communities. This follows the submission of complaints over inequality – in particular, that public holidays are currently biased towards Christianity – to the commission. Zenelda Hall said: “People should just write petitions to their local coun cillors, and we’ll see what the ma jority says. Do something about how you feel. I feel the holidays should stay as they are – we can’t have more or fewer.”

N ’n poging om die “boeke skoon te maak” gaan die Stellenbosch Munisipaliteit eersdaags sowat R9 miljoen se onverhaalbare skuld van Stellenbossers afskryf. Dit behels die afskryf van sowat R7 025 849,72 se onverhaalbare skuld afkomstig van agterstallige rekeninge en R1 979 774,45 van hulpbehoewendes se onverhaalbare skuld. Die item is Dinsdag by ’n komiteevergadering van die munisipaliteit se finansies en korporatiewe dienste bespreek en sal eersdaags voor die stadsraad dien. By die vergadering het die hoof finansiële beampte van die munisipaliteit, Mark Bolton, verduidelik dat die agterstallige rekeninge egter in die tydperk tussen 1992 en 2004 val en dat geen van dié agterstallige rekeninge ná 2004 dateer nie. Die munisipaliteit se beleid vir onverhaalbare skuld maak voorsiening dat gebruikers se skuld afgeskryf kan word as hulle nie opgespoor kan word nie; dit verjaarde skuld is; boedels insolvent verklaar word; likwidasieprosesse aan die gang is én in gevalle waar mense onwettig by laekoste-behuisingseenhede ingetrek het. Dié agterstallige rekeninge wat die

die R7 025 849,72 van die R9 miljoen opmaak, is egter destyds aan die munisipaliteit se prokureurs oorhandig, maar volgens Bolton het hulle tot dusver geen of min sukses met die vervolging van dié skuldenaars behaal nie. Dit is dus nie koste-effektief om die rekeninghouers verder te vervolg nie, het hy gesê. Hy het bygevoeg dat indien die onverhaalbare skuld op die munisipaliteit se boeke bly, én daar geen beweging op die rekeninge plaasvind nie, dit onder meer ’n negatiewe impak op die munisipaliteit se voorsiening vir slegte skuld sal

hê. Die munisipaliteit se beleid laat ook toe dat die skuld van hulpbehoewendes halfjaarliks afgeskryf word. Dié gebruikers moet egter aan sekere kriteria voldoen wat in die beleid uiteengesit is, waarna hulle op ’n databasis geregistreer word en hiervoor kwalifiseer. By die vergadering is verduidelik dat die ander bedrag van sowat R1 979 774,45 se onverhaalbare skuld – wat eersdaags afgeskryf sal word – bestaan uit skuld van hulpbehoewendes wat vanjaar op die databasis geregistreer is.

LEË swembad en ’n rugby-stadion met ’n onspeelbare oppervlak. Dít is tans die stand van sake in ’n dorp waar die Universiteit Stellenbosch (US) hom nog altyd kon roem op wêreldklas-sportgeriewe. Die Coetzenburg-swembad staan sedert 2010 leeg en daar is nog geen aanduiding wanneer ’n nuwe swembad gebou gaan word nie. (Sien ook artikel op bl. 51.) Die meeste wedstryde van die Junior Wêreldbeker-rugbytoernooi moes in die Danie Cravenstadion gespeel word, maar ná net twee wedstryddae is die stadion ontneem van sy wedstryde wat onder meer die halfeindronde en eindstryd sou insluit. Dié wedstryde gaan nou op Nuweland gespeel word. Die Danie Craven se speeloppervlak het heeltemal opgebreek ná al die reën wat geval het. Dit het toestande onveilig vir spelers gemaak. “Dit is ’n groot jammerte dat ons die wedstryde moes skuif, maar ongelukkig het die veld nie aan die vereistes voldoen nie weens al die reën,” het die toernooi-direkteur Philippe Bourdarias gesê. Prof. Andreas van Wyk, voorsitter van Stellenbosch 360, het gesê wat gebeur het, is ’n groot teleurstelling. “Dit is ’n verlies vir alle Stellenbossers en dit toon hoe belangrik dit is dat al ons sportfasiliteite van die hoogste gehalte behoort te wees.” In ’n amptelike verklaring het die US ook sy spyt uitgespreek en aangedui dat die probleem aange-

spreek word. “Die US wil graag sy spyt teenoor die geaffekteerde rugbyspanne, die Internasionale Rugbyraad en die rugbypubliek uitspreek vir enige teleurstelling wat hulle mag ervaar deur die skuif van rugbywedstryde. “Die relevante rolspelers binne die US het ná die skade van die onlangse stortreën aan die rugbyveld by Coetzenburg vergader om ’n plan van aksie in werking te stel om die herstel van die speelvlak te bespoedig. “Dit sal onder meer fyner monitering en instandhouding van velde behels. “Die sukses van Matie-rugby, die groot aanvraag na en druk op

A DELEGATION from the National Council of Provinces (NCOP ) paid a visit to Stellenbosch to see how much progress has been made regarding service delivery issues, and to give local officials a chance to explain the problems hampering them. The Stellenbosch Municipality hosted the delegation, along with representatives from the Cape Winelands District Municipality and the municipalities of Drakenstein and the Breede River Valley. Part of the delegation’s aim was to follow up on the progress made with issues raised during the Taking Parliament to the People initiative in 2007. The four municipalities were asked to make short presentations on how they felt they had brought government closer to the people. During the morning session in the Stellenbosch council chambers on Tuesday, Freddie Adams, the leader of the delegation, explained that in playing a “big brother role” the NCOP needed to see to it that all three spheres of government worked together to solve the problems of the various communities. The council’s role is to assist municipalities with issues that are hampering service delivery, and not just to criticise them, he added. Mike Mgajo, the municipal manager for the Cape Winelands District Municipality,

explained in his presentation that the financial viability of the municipality is seriously challenged. He added that alternative sources of funding would be needed in a few years’ time for the municipality to able to carry on delivering services in rural areas. Michelle Aalbers, the manager for community development in Stellenbosch, did a presentation on the various community participation and outreach projects the municipality is involved in. She explained how vital partnerships are to the municipality, and pointed out some of the partnerships the Stellenbosch Municipality has on international, provincial and local level. She highlighted vandalism as a serious problem at local sports and community facilities, and added that it is the municipality’s dream to see these facilities become better utilised. Councillor Pieter Venter, portfolio chairperson for finances, highlighted the serious capital budget backlog, as well as a bottleneck in the provision of infrastructure and the building of houses. Adams ended the session by urging the municipalities to work hand in hand with the NCOP to eradicate poverty. “It’s impossible to do it alone,” Adams said. “We must take hands and work for the betterment of the people of South Africa. “It’s time to forget about politics and deliver to those who put us here.”

Top USfasiliteite gevra ’n DORP met wêreldklas-atlete en -sportlui sonder topgehalte fasiliteite? Die leë swembad by Universiteit Stellenbosch (US) is lank reeds ’n doring in die vlees van die US, maar ook van die dorp en sy inwoners. Vooraanstaande buitelandse sportlui, en nou ook sportmaatskappye soos die Spezialized-fietsmaatskappy, het hul misnoeë uitgespreek oor die gebrek aan veral swemgeriewe vir wêreldklas-atlete wat hier kom oefen. Terwyl dié sportlui die lof van die dorp, die omgewing en die mense luidkeels besing – hulle het selfs ’n video daaroor gemaak wat wonderlike, gratis bemarking van Stellenbosch bied – is die gebrek aan topgeriewe onverskoonbaar. Nou het die o.20 Rugby Wêreldbeker-wedstryde wat aan die Danie Craven-stadion toegeken is ook skipbreuk gely weens die swak toestand van die veld. ’n Gulde geleentheid om die US en die dorp te bemark en om finansiële voordeel daaruit te trek is daarmee heen. Hoewel sport nie ’n akademiese instelling se hoofprioriteit is nie, vra die US-Stellenbosch-pakket beslis daarna. Vir ’n instelling van uitnemendheid is die huidige situasie ook nie aanvaarbaar nie. Die US moet besef dié instelling is ’n integrale deel van Stellenbosch en sy mense. Wanneer die universiteit geleenthede verbeur weens swak of geen geriewe nie, ly die dorp as toeristebestemming ook daaronder.

‘No priority needs in budget’ THE Stellenbosch Civic Association (SCA) could not support the approval of the IDP and Budget at 31 May’s Council meeting, and thus vote against the approval of these for the following reasons. The IDP is factually incorrect as outdated statistics were used and it did not correctly identify the priority needs identified of the wards in Kayamandi and some other wards. No proper and meaningful community participation took place. The community consultation meetings listed in the IDP are incorrect – these were not community participation meetings. These meetings were in fact just information meetings where communities had to listen to politicians and officials for more than a hour, whereafter they were allowed to asked questions for 10 to 15 minutes. The IDP document does not identify the persons elected to

serve on the ward committees. In this regard it must also be noted that the DA-led council has deliberately excluded some of the PR councillors from partaking in the ward committees. This practice is against the best practice for ward committees. If the DA-controlled council is to continue preparing the IDP in this manner, we will lose all credibility in the IDP, and the public will also lose interest. The SCA did not support the budget as it once again failed to address the priority needs of some communities. Once again, the budget does not address the housing needs of Ida’s Valley and Cloetesville communities for the next three years. Instead, the council has budgeted to spend R85 million on new offices without providing national treasury with any motivation for this project. The loan funding was also not secured for this project.

The SCA also questions the credibility of this budget, as no draft or top-layer Service Delivery Budget Implementation Plan (SDBIP) was submitted with the budget, as required by legislation. The lack of a proper SDBIP is evident in the under-spending in the current budget. All indications are that the municipality will substantially under-spend in this current year on the capital budget and MIG funding. There is under-spending in addressing the communities’ basic needs, but council can spend funds on paving and planting trees. Without an SDBIP the community cannot measure the municipality’s performance and hold it accountable. The SCA urges the community to attend council meetings and read all the agendas available in all the libraries and on the municipal website. Ek was baie verbaas om in Eikestadnuus van 1 Junie te lees dat die munisipaliteit meer besoekers na die Jan Marais-reservaat wil lok, want onlangs is een van die twee hekke gesluit – ná meer as 50 jaar. Hierdie sluiting dui vir my daarop dat die Munisipaliteit besoeke aan die Park wil ontmoedig. Vir bykans 40 jaar het ek minstens een keer per week die park besoek – in die ou dae het ek gedraf en noudat ek ouer is, stap ek. Ek het heen en weer, op en af gedraf/stap, en het uitgewerk dat ek telkens bykans 4 km kan aflê sonder om twee keer dieselfde paadjie te gebruik – baie aangenaam. Nou kan ek dit nie meer doen nie want die oostelike hek is gesluit – dit is die kant waar ek bly.

Ek verstaan dus nie hoe dit rym met die stelling van die betrokke beampte dat hulle “drawwers wil lok” nie. Nog iets wat my absoluut dronkslaan is dat die munisipaliteit ’n uitgebreide program vir die dorp het om fiets- en voetganger-verkeer aan te moedig – maar jy mag nou nie meer deur die park stap of fietsry nie. Moes daar nie méér hekke ingesit word eerder as om die helfte toe te sluit nie? As die munisipaliteit ernstig is met hul verklaarde doel om meer besoekers te lok en ook om drawwers te lok, is dit noodsaaklik dat die hek aan die oostekant weer oopgemaak word, en dat daar selfs een of twee nuwe hekke aan die noordekant ingesit word. Handelaar sluit ná jare ELBÉ VAN HEERDEN

AAR die rakke eens volgepak was met ware – enigiets van motorolie tot paraffien, skoonheidseep en kruideniersware – staan hulle nou leeg. Die Williams-broers, Alfie, Percy en Jeffrey, werk reeds sedert hul kinderdae in die winkel wat hul pa, Oom Jat Williams, op 4 Julie 1946 geopen het. Oom Jat het jare lank vir die destydse Vlottenburg-wynlandgoed gewerk, maar het later saam met sy vrou, Bettie, JGC Williams Algemene Handelaars in Webersvalleiweg, Jamestown, oopgemaak. “Toe ons oud genoeg was, het my pa begin boer op sy kleinhoewe in Jamestown en het ons die winkel oorgeneem,” vertel Percy. “Hy was baie suksesvol met die aarbeie en patats waarmee hy geboer het. “Aan die begin het hy nog perde gebruik om te ploeg, en later was hy een van die eerste boere om twee trekkers aan te koop.” Hulle het nie ’n salaris verdien nie, maar die winkel het hulle aan die lewe gehou, en selfs hul eie kinders deur universiteit gesit. “Dit het maar swaar gegaan en ons was besig! “Elke dag, van 06:00 af, was ons hier met drie kruidenierswaens op die pad om voorraad aan te ry en seker te maak almal het wat hulle nodig het. “Die skoonsusters moes ook hand bysit en later ook ons kinders. “Maar ons was baie gelukkig.

In die meer as sestig jaar van ons bestaan, was daar nie een gewapende roof nie, niemand het ons besteel nie en niemand het ons trokke beroof nie. “Ons is baie dankbaar!” Die hele Williams-familie het Saterdag bymekaar gekom ná die winkel sy deure finaal vir die publiek gesluit het. Met tafels kreunend onder lekkernye het hulle afskeid geneem van die winkel wat vir soveel jare hul lewensbron was. Taryn Williams, oudste van Oom Jat se agterkleinkinders, het ’n roerende toespraak gemaak. “Hier het ons baie meer gekry as net Oupa se sweets! Ons het geleer van dedication, en commitment en sacrifice, en ook van naas-

teliefde. “Maar ons wat hier grootgeword het, het baie meer gekry as net Oupa wat vir ons sweets gee.” Besige jare was dit wel. “Ons het altyd gespot dat niemand in die week kon doodgaan nie, want daar was nie tyd vir begrafnis nie. “Veral nie Saterdae nie,” het een van die dogters gespot. Ná al die jare van harde werk het die broers uiteindelik besluit om nou uit te tree en om hul aftrede saam met hul families te geniet. Net ’n paar leë bokse bly nou op die rakke oor – Panado’s, batterye, ’n bottel Jeyes Fluid en ’n paar bottels sjampoe – agter die groen deure van die hoekwinkel wat vir nou gesluit is.

‘More character for valley’ – mayor STELLENBOSCH Mayor Conrad Sidego has announced a new project to boost morale and ethical living. The Stellenbosch “Valley of Character” project aims to “enhance the core values of the municipality” and the community, the mayor said. “Stellenbosch is a community of possibilities, where one can embody and live a vision of a town that is driven by values.” The “Valley of Character” campaign kicked off with an introductory session for senior municipal officials on 6 June. Officials will be receiving inspirational messages every week to motivate them to live with “greater consciousness of

moral character”, and to “be examples to the rest of the community”, the mayor said. “This approach wants to inspire change from the inside out.” More training sessions are planned for when council returns from recess in July. The campaign follows on Sidego’s “Stop at the Stop Street” campaign, which he launched in October 2011. “I drive through Cloetesville on my way to the office, and notice that motorists do not stop at the stop streets,” he said. “I was also horrified that some mothers with children in their cars would not stop at the stop street. We continue to com-

plain about crime and lawlessness, but are in fact contributing to the greater sense of lawlessness.” The overarching aim of the stop-street campaign was to combat this attitude and get people to “look at their values and ethics”, he said. “Do the right thing because it’s the right thing to do, and not because a traffic officer will pull you over and give you a fine. Geyser control now on a roll in S’bosch THE geyser control project being implemented by Stellenbosch Municipality and Eskom to help reduce electricity demand during peak time is gaining momentum. Altogether 963 of a total of 10 500 units had

been installed by the end of May, and the process continues unabated. The Stellenbosch Municipality is calling on residents to support the programme, which involves connecting specialised switches to their geysers. These devices

switch off the power supply to geysers during times of peak demand, which is between 18:00 and 20:00, to help conserve power. This month and the next, qualified installers (with special IDs) are visiting homes in the following high-

Tiger Consumer Brands skenk ruim aan Lindzay: Die personeel van Tiger Consumer Brands het van

deesweek ’n groot skenking aan Lindzay van Wyk (10) van Kylemore gemaak om sy lewensomstandighede te verbeter. Die skenking kom nadat Eikestadnuus in Mei vanjaar inwoners en besighede versoek het om Lindzay en sy familie te ondersteun. Hy is met hidrosefalus (waterkop) gebore, wat die abnormale versameling van vloeistof behels, wat onder meer tot die vergroting van die kop lei. Lindzay is blind en ly aan epilepsie. Hy het ook ’n verkorte regterarm en been. Hy woon saam met sy ma, haar man en twee susters in ’n houthuis in sy ouma se agterplaas, waar hy meesal sy dae in die bed deurbring. Die Tiger Brandspersoneel se skenking het onder meer bestaan uit klere, kos en skoonmaakmiddels. Cheetahs make a move

HE renowned Cheetah Outreach Project has moved from the Spier wine estate to a new home in Paardevlei, a mixed-use development in Somerset West. The new site, bordering the Paardevlei, offers stunning mountain views and is adjacent to Somerset Mall. The Cheetah Outreach Project’s offices will settle in Quinan House on the property, which also offers fine mountain views. Annie Beckhelling, founder of Cheetah Outreach, said that with Spier’s renewed focus on its heritage wine farm roots and Cheetah Outreach’s own ongoing development plans, it was mutually agreed that it would be necessary for the project to find a new home. “While we are sad to leave Spier and have enjoyed a long and happy relationship there, our new home at Paardevlei offers us exciting prospects,” she says. “Across the road from Somerset Mall, the new venue is still accessible to the thousands of people who visit us. The move marks a new chapter in the story of Cheetah Outreach, and we’re excited about this next phase of our journey.” Cheetah Outreach began in 1997 with two ambassador cheetahs. Spier made land, water and electricity available for free to the project, which has

since grown to 10 cheetahs and a number of jackals, meerkats, servals, caracals, and bat-eared foxes. The project aims to raise awareness around the plight of the cheetah, and runs an extensive conservation and education programme. At the turn of the century an estimated 100 000 cheetah lived in 44 countries throughout Africa and Asia. Today there are just 7 500 cheetahs left (according to a 2008 census by the IUCN). South Africa is home to fewer than 1 000 of these majestic cats. According to Anthony Diepenbroek – CEO of Heartland, responsible for the Paardevlei mixed-use development – Cheetah Outreach will add significant value to the undertaking. “A sustainable recreation area is one of the core elements at Paardevlei,” he says. “The cheetahs will be located on the edge of the vlei. Future plans for this area include a walkway around the rehabilitated perennial water body and bird hides, so the project fits in well with our vision.” Heartland arranged the project’s move, and is helping it settle in. The use of offices and land forms part of the deal. “We look forward to our partnership with Heartland,” said Beckhelling. “Our new home will help us in our quest to protect the cheetah for the benefit of future generations.”

Dieretuin sluit sy deure NA jare van swaarkry moet die Tygerberg Dieretuin sy deure finaal aan die einde van die jaar sluit. Oor die jare heen het besoekergetalle bly kwyn, en het skole het nie meer leerlinge gestuur as deel van hul opvoeding nie. Dié dieretuin is 33 jaar gelede deur John Spence begin. “Hy het reeds op vierjarige leeftyd vir sy ouers gesê hy gaan vir Kaapstad ’n dieretuin bou,” vertel sy vrou, Lorraine Spence, wat sedert sy dood in Januarie 2010 die dieretuin behartig. Die sjimpansees is eintlik Lorraine se babas. Angus, ’n reus van ’n sjimpansee, het van ’n Taiwanese vissersboot gekom en reguit in haar arms ingehardloop. “En dit was dit,” vertel sy. Van die ander is van erge verwaarlosing gered en twee apies kom van ’n Belgiese laboratorium. Toe Eikestadnuus dié week daar gaan inloer het, het ’n swaan en ’n trop njalas, twee volgroeide leeus, ’n marmoset-familie en twee Bengaalse tiere in die son gelê. “Ek het drie van hul van kleins af grootgemaak. Tigger is een van hulle.” Die massiewe roofdier kom te voorskyn toe hy haar stem hoor en loop ’n draai – om seker te maak hy word van alle kante gesien. ’n Paar van hul voëls is reeds verkoop en die res van die diere word nou stadig maar seker na nuwe huise, hetsy by dieretuine of ander veilige hawens, oorgeplaas. Die sjimpansees en van die apies trek egter saam met Lorraine na hul nuwe woning by die Drakenstein Leeupark, wat aan haar seun behoort. Die leeus en tiere gaan ook saam. Dit was ’n besige middag by die diere-

tuin, met ’n skoolgroep wat jillend rondhardloop en nog ’n paar joernaliste wat op soek is na ’n storie. Vir minstens een van die inwoners was dié onrustigheid net te veel. In die groot hok vir die sjimpansees het van hulle in die son gelê en een het rustig teen die heining geleun. Die grootste onder die groep, Rocco, was egter glad nie ingenome daarmee dat sy eienares saam met iemand anders daar rondloop nie. Of dalk was die skoolkinders vir hom te raserig, maar voor ons ons oë kon uitvee, het hy met ’n groot lawaai aangehardloop gekom en ’n handvol sand in ons rigting gegooi! ) Toegangskaartjies tot die dieretuin is nou halfprys totdat die dieretuin aan die einde van die jaar sluit.

DIE studente het in groot getalle geregistreer, die kunstenaars is bespreek en die 2012 Stellenbosch Internasionale Kamermusiekfees beloof om die mees glansryke konsertreeks nog te wees. Onder die kunstenaars is daar bekende gesigte soos violiste Daniel Rowland en Frank Stadler, plaaslike ster-pianiste Nina Schumann – ook die fees se artistieke direkteur – en Luis Magalhaes, asook die fagotspeler Lecolion Washington. Nuwe gesigte sluit die hoogaangeskrewe basvioolspeler Jeff Bradetich, Giora Schmidt, een van Duitsland se top- jong violiste, en die klarinetspeler Anthony McGill, in. McGill was op Suid-Afrikaanse televisie te sien toe hy saam met Itzhak Perlman en Yo-Yo Ma tydens president Barak Obama se inlywingseremonie opgetree het, en sal deur ’n paar medespelers van die Metropolitan opera in New York na die Kamermusiekfees vergesel word. Die konsertprogramme bevat inderdaad ’n wye repertorium. Uit Amerika is daar werke deur Charles Ives en Samuel Barber, uit Oostenryk en Duitsland word onder meer die werke van Bach, Mozart en Friedrich Gulda uitgevoer. Die Suid-Afrikaanse komponis Bongani Ndodana-Breen se werke is ook op vanjaar se spyskaart. Die Kamermusiekfees het vinnig onder die internasionale gaste bekend geword vir innoverende konsertprogramme en vanjaar sal verskeie Suid-Afrikaanse

IT is haar passie om potensiaal te ontwikkel. En só hoop sy om deur een of elkeen van haar projekte alle Stellenbossers bewus te maak van hul inherente talent. So voel die nuutaangestelde bestuurder van ontwikkeling by Stellenbosch 360, Ann Heyns, oor die groot, maar ook opwindende taak wat vir haar voorlê. Ann is die dryfkrag agter die ontwikkeling van die splinternuwe toerismeroete, Roete 360, wat ál die gemeenskappe van Stellenbosch, Dwarsrivier en Franschhoek insluit. Die roete het ten doel die skep van ’n platform vir uitsonderlike talent, outentieke ervarings en inkorporeer belewenisse wat die besoeker in aanraking kan bring met die gebied se kultuurerfenis. Die Roete 360-kaart is pas by die Indaba in Durban bekend gestel en volgens Ann sal dit binnekort

hier in elke gemeenskap uitgerol word. Sy verduidelik dat die kaart ’n panoramiese oorsig oor Stellenbosch gee en dat al sy invalshoeke bekyk word deurdat gemeenskappe ingesluit is wat op ander kaarte nie duidelik aangedui word nie. Sy meen dat die kaart die besoeker sal wys dat daar meer aan Stellenbosch en sy omliggende gebiede is as wat net die oog kan sien. “Roete 360 is ’n brugbouer. Dit is die vlagskip, oftewel die vertoonvenster van die ontwikkeling waarmee ek besig is.” Volgens Ann is die roete ’n voertuig vir ekonomiese bemagtiging, maar sy wil aktiwiteite uitlig waaraan inwoners met hul inherente talent en beskikbare bronne kan deelneem. “Ek wil nie hê dat mense eers ’n bank moet gaan sien om ’n besigheid te begin nie,” voeg sy by. Small homes, big returns IN recent months Warren Buffett, CEO of Berkshire Hathaway and arguably the world’s top investment brain, has repeatedly said that private investors should be buying up as many single-family homes to rent out as they can afford. “And he has given several good reasons for this unequivocal advice, which we believe are just as relevant in the SA property market now as in the US and other property markets around the world,” says Jan Davel, MD of the RealNet estate agency group. In an interview on CNBC television, and again in the International Business Times, Buffett said both equities and single-family homes were attractive investments at the moment in terms of price – but if homes could be purchased at low rates and held for a long time, they would be a better investment. Indeed, he said, he would buy up “a couple of hundred thousand” homes right now if only he could find a practical way to manage them. “Then, asked what he would say to young investors trying to decide between equities and property, he immediately replied that they should buy a couple of single-family homes at distressed prices and find renters,” notes Davel. “One reason for this was that, as long as the management of such individual properties remained a logistical nightmare for big corporations, they would be drawn more to commercial properties and apartment complexes, leaving the single-family homes field wide open for private investors to acquire good assets very cheaply.”

And such homes are not only available at low prices, says Davel, but more affordable at the moment thanks to the fact that mortgage interest rates are at historic lows. “This reduces the minimum monthly repayment and makes it more likely that it will be covered by the rent that tenants are paying. In addition, although home loans are harder to come by, it is still possible in most cases to gear a large percentage of the purchase price –

TEAM SASOL RACING LOOKING TO GROW TITLE LEAD AT ZWARTKOPS THRILLER

Hennie Groenewald heads into round 4 of the Bridgestone Production Car Championship loo king to defend and grow his twopoint lead at the head of the championship points table. Team Sasol Racing fields a pair of Subaru WRX STI’s that SP Race Engineering Team Principal Carel Pienaar says will allow Groenewald and Richard Pinard to compete on merit for wins in the three race programme.“I’m expecting to have a pair of quick cars and be more competitive than we were in Port Elizabeth last month.” Hennie is the only competitor in the series that has completed every one of the nine races held so far and fi nished well in the points in each heat, which I put down in part to the inherent attributes of the Subaru product and the technology found in the Sasol Turbo Fuels Plus and Sasol Techno Oils we use.”Championship leader Groenewald is upbeat about racing at Zwartkops again: “We have an indication that the Subaru is quick so we are going to concentrate on maintenance issues in our prerace test and make sure the gremlins are ironed out as well as try out a few setup issues

to maximize the WRX STI’s inherently superb handling”. The modest driver gained two extra points last time out for setting the fastest lap time in races 1 and 3!“The car is a different beast to what we rolled out at Zwartkops at the begin ning of March”, Groenewald continued. “The car has the potential to win races and if we can step up our pace a bit after Port Elizabeth, then I’m fairly confident Zwartkops will be good to us”.Tactics in the races are equally important. “Grid positions for the doublepoints paying race 3 are decided in race 2 so the pressure is on to get the fastest lap in the second heat. I’m happy to be leading the championship and the inland races offer our best opportunity to extend our lead,” said Groenewald.For Richard Pinard, ex pectations are more modest, having borne the brunt of the team’s misfortunes this year. “I would like a few good, clean and competitive races, thank you very much! The team has wor ked hard to find solutions to the problems I’ve had and they are confident.“I know I’ve got so me work to do and I will hopefully be the rear gunner for Hennie on the day. The pressure is building as the year progresses – the chips are down,” said Pinard.“The whole team is pretty confident at the moment and with only one more coastal race and three inland events on the ca lendar, the Sasol Subaru team is in excellent shape.”

Die BMW 116i pretbuks HANS HEESE OOR die jare heen het ons almal ’n persepsie van BMW’s ontwikkel; vinnige en sportiewe sedans en coupés met ongeewenaarde padhouvermoë.

NUUT. Die splinternuwe BMW 1reeks pronk met ’n vars nuwe voorkoms en ’n nuwe viersilinder turbopetrolenjin. Foto: QuickPic

Toe die BMW-1-reeks, met sy luikrug-ontwerp, ’n paar jaar gelede op die toneel verskyn het, het dit nogal ’n tyd geneem om gewoond aan te raak. Dit voel soos nou die dag wat ons as familie na ’n kerkkamp afgesit het met van die eerste 1-reeks BMW’s wat pas tevore bekend gestel was. Die spesifieke BMW was ’n 130i. Die meeste van die kampeerders het hier

vir die eerste keer die kattebaklose BMW gesien en nader gestaan om te bekyk. Die vraag van die meeste nuuskieriges was of BMW dan nou met klein Mazda en Ford luikrug-modelle meeding met ’n klein 1,3 liter enjin! (maar met ’n heelwat hoër prys)! Natuurlik het hulle hul fout agtergekom met die terugkeer huis toe; sonder om wintie te wees het ek verskeie van die kampgenote verbygesteek en kon hulle beslis sien dat daar ’n BMW reguit-sessilinder onder die enjinkap is en nie ’n klein 1,3 cc viersilindertjie nie. Intussen het BMW die 1-reeks uitgebrei en van die vorige modelle weggelaat. Vervolg op volgende bladsy:

116i vervolg Die huidige reeks sluit die tradisionele luikrug-bakvorm in, maar daar het intussen ook coupés, cabriolets en ook ’n viertrek klein X1 bygekom; en nog meer modelle sal later op die plaaslike mark bekend gestel word. Ons het onlangs weer kennis gemaak met die BMW 1-reeks “intreemodel”, die vyfdeur 116 i met ’n handrat. En hierdie keer was ons voorbereid om minder te verwag van die kleiner enjin met minder krag. Wat egter ’n verrassing was, was dat die motor inderdaad met ’n 1,6 liter toegerus was; voorheen het BMW sy intreemodelle

ook as bv. ’n 316 bemark hoewel die enjin inderdaad ’n 1,8 liter onder die kap gehad het. Die motor klou soos ’n neet om draaie, die tradisionele agterwielaandrywing met sy onafhanklike multiskakel-agtervering bly steeds die norm waaraan ander mededingers word en die wakker enjin gekoppel aan ’n sesgangratkas is die resep vir ’n wenner in die luikrugklas. Vir studente wat dit kan bekostig, en veral jong professionele mense sonder gesinne, is die 1-reeks beslis ’n teikenmark. Iets om na te strewe. Die nuwe 1-reeks (vanaf 2011) is langer, die asafstand groter, die spoorwydte breer en belangrik, die kattebak se ruimte het toegeneem van 330 na 360 liter. Daar is nou ook méér stoorruimtes in

Die aantreklikheid van die 1-reeks is wat onder die enjinkap lê: die 1 589 cc turbo-aangejaagde enjin met elektroniese wisselbare dubbele klepbeheer wat 100 kW teen ’n rustige 4 400 rpm ontwikkel en 220 Nm vrystel tussen 1 350 en 4 300 rpm.

Aan wringkrag is daar geen tekort nie en kan bulte uitgeseil word sonder om ratte te verwissel. Boonop stel dit hom in staat om van 0-100 te versnel in 8,5 sekondes en die naald by 210 km/h te laat draai. BMW maak daarop aanspraak dat dit tot ’n gemiddelde verbruik van minder as 6 liter/100 km. BMW was een van die pioniers van die diensplanne in die land en het waarskynlik bygedra tot die gewildheid en goeie verkope van alle nuwe BMW modelle oor die afgelope dekade of twee. Die 1-reeks raak dus ’n nog meer gesogte kopie met sy 5-jaar of 100 000 km. En wat kos hierdie aanloklike, jongmensmotor? Die koper, of sy of haar pa, sal R269 526 moet uithaal vir hierdie vreugdevolle windhondbuksie.

The Astra minus two doors with a sleeker, lower roof line is quite an attractive mode of transport. There’s an unexpected beauty and affordable exclusivity that comes with the cou-

S part of the annual Cell C Take a Girl Child to Work Day, 25 girls from Kylemore and Stellenzicht High Schools in Stellenbosch spent the day at the offices of Media24. The pupils were addressed by senior management, editors, marketing managers and those in the human resources department, who provided them with insight into the world of work and the print media industry. The highlight of the day was a behind-the-scenes-look at Huisgenoot’s new reality series Saktyd – and of course the free gift bags

sponsored by Seventeen Magazine. The girls were selected from schools that form part of the Media24 Rachel’s Angels Trust, a mentorship programme involving 20 Western Cape schools and Stellenbosch University. According to Cell C, this year’s theme – “Choose Your Tomorrow, Today” – encourages girls and young women around South Africa to believe in themselves, to open their eyes to the possibilities around them, and to make a difference in their own lives. “It is initiatives like this that expose our learners in Media24

Rachel’s Angels to the various career opportunities out there, which broaden their horizons and enable them to make informed choices about their career and future,” said Anthea Jacobs, project coordinator for the Rachel’s Angels Trust. “This initiative has exposed learners at Stellenzicht to the world of work and expanded their horizons,” said Lester Allies, principal of Stellenzicht High. “The girls were ecstatic – it was a day they will never forget,” said Adam de Vries, principal of Kylemore High.

Seda and pupils learn from each other TEN grade 10 girls from Kayamandi’s Makupula High School visited the Small Enterprise Development Agency’s (Seda’s) Cape Winelands branch in Stellenbosch recently as part of the national Take a Girl Child to Work Day. During this corporate social investment event, which has been held in South Africa every year since 2003, companies involved arrange for school girls, usually from poorer communities, to spend the day at their offices. The goal of the initiative, which is organised by Cell C and endorsed by the South African Department of Education, is to “deepen the thinking of the girl child with regard to their infinite roles in society, enhance her self-esteem, inspire and motivate her to reach her full potential and, through exposure to diverse careers and positive role models, assist her to prepare for the world of work”. Seda’s participation in the event is aimed at creating awareness about the agency and what it offers. The pupils, each of whom was assigned to a staff member, were exposed to career opportunities within Seda, and were also given an overview of the agency’s products and services for small, micro and medium business enterprises.

“I’ve learned from Seda that you can start whatever business you want and make a success of it,” Olwethu Mto, one of the pupils, said afterwards. “You can achieve building your own business and be a success in life. HE latest source of pressure on Stellenbosch University (SU) to construct a new pool comes from influential American bicycle company Specialized, which recently opened its South African headquarters in Stellenbosch. Anecdotes PRG and Craven Week fullback Jason Worral’s father Bradley is a Boishaai old boy, and was the hero of the 1982 interschool competition in which Boishaai battled Paarl Gym. PRG and Boishaai were also the two Cape schools invited to the first St John’s festival, and have been regular attendees of this festival over the years. In 2000 the Paarl Boys’ team were so depleted by injuries that they were one player short in their starting 15 for the last game. THE next Totalsports Ladies’ Race will take place in Stellenbosch on Thursday 9 August, in celebration of Women’s Day. Runners and walkers will get to choose between a fun 5 km run and walk, and a 10 km run and walk. Early Totalsports Ladies’ Race entries will receive an official race T-shirt, and medals will be awarded to all finishers.
