Rhenish Joint Schools’ Prestige Concert – Endler Hall 14 May 2014 On Wednesday 14 May 2014 the area in and around the Rhenish Schools and the Endler Hall was abuzz with excited musicians and singers. The Junior school had reported for rehearsals in the Endler by 7:30 and some of the very young ones for whom this was their first performance in such an impressive venue, it all seemed quite intimidating. The staff at the high school were very supportive and understanding as first the orchestra members and then the choir (some 140 girls) left class and walked to the Endler for their rehearsal. All the hard work and sacrifices made, both of time and in practice, proved well worth the effort as Rhenish Girls’ High School hosted a very successful Prestige Concert. The music departments of both schools are congratulated on the performances of their students – they are a credit to their teachers. With new talent input coming along every year, it is inevitable that the Prestige Concert has a different flavour each year. Wednesday evening at the Endler once again proved to be a memorable event. Rhenish Primary entertained the audience and many a heart was touched by the tiny bodies with big eyes, waving to their mommies and daddies and we were transported back to a time when we too were young and brave. The two Moon sisters really took the audience’s breathe away and Jessie Brand’s phenomenal performance left everyone in awe. The second half of the programme saw the senior learners coming into their own. From the orchestra performance, through a number of incredible solos to the choir, hearts were touched and people were blessed by our talented girls. The mass item with combined choirs of both schools was the highlight of the evening – especially when the entire audience stood and sang along, “We are the world. We are the children. We are the ones who make a brighter day, so let’s start giving.”
A very big thank you to each and every one who participated in the evening, you made it the unforgettable experience it was. A special thank you goes to Mrs Arzul for giving so freely of her photographic talent to record the evenings excitement and memorable moments. Thanks too to Mr Coetzee and his support staff team for the seemingly endless runs to the Endler to set up. Viva la Musica Rhenish Mrs Sonja van Amstel

Rhenish Old Girls Come Home The first Saturday in May, the one closest to our birthday, traditionally sees the annual luncheon of the Rhenish Old Girls’ Union (ROGU). The abundance of public holidays this year meant a slight delay and current Rhenishers (LC members and hostel girls) opened the doors and their hearts to welcome our old girls back to Rhenish on Saturday 10 May 2014. Three special reunion years celebrated their 45th, 40th, and 25th reunions respectively. The hostel dining room sounded not different to a large and very busy market as friends excitedly greeted each other, caught up with events in each other’s lives and relived memories of their days shared at Rhenish. The laughter was loud, the talking quite animated and the spirit of good cheer definitely something that needs to be experienced. The old girls were taken on a tour by Ms Slabber. This was half a trip down memory lane and half a look at what Rhenish is on the verge of morphing into with all the infrastructure developments they were able to view and to hear about.
Fei-Fei and Kirsten addressed the old girls bringing them up to date on our sporting, cultural and academic achievements and shared with them their personal experience of the school for which they share a great love. Mrs Fourie and her team of assistants served up a scrumptious three course meal that was a feast – both visually and in terms of flavours. Rhenishers young and old LOVE their food. The stars of the day were undoubtedly the Rhenishers who greeted our returning Rhenishers, served them, engaged with them … and did the often thankless job of clearing up afterwards. With our motto of being “Rooted in the Past; Positioned for the Future”, it is lovely to see Rhenishers both young and old, present and past, paying homage to their school and her traditions and ensuring that these values and traditions live on in every one of us.
Photos of last term’s very successful “Dad and Daughter Dance” can be viewed at www.fokus.co.za. Orders can be placed electronically through this website. Rhenishers Out in the World Over the past few months, a name has cropped up in this section on more than one occasion. She is clearly a young athlete on the way to achieving great things. Kaitlyn Sparks has delivered yet another amazing performance in pole vault. Last weekend, she flew to Potchefstroom to participate in the SA Open Championship. Kaitlyn won the gold with another great height of 3.80m. We are incredibly proud of her and we are confident that she is an athlete we will be hearing a lot more about, both locally and internationally.
Matric 2013 Certificates The Matric Certificates of candidates who successfully completed the examination are now available at the school from Dr Bennie. This does not include candidates who applied for remarks. To collect, candidates must come in person with their ID book. If they cannot collect the certificate themselves, they can give permission to someone to collect it on their behalf. In this case, the appointed person must provide a letter from the candidate giving them permission to collect the certificate and the appointed person must present his/her own ID book.
Hospice Cycle for Life Helderberg Hospice will be hosting a Cycle for Life Cyclothon on Saturday 24 May 2014 from 6am to 6pm. Rhenish would like to show our support for them by entering two teams. Whether you are a parent, a member of staff or a learner, speak to Ms Henery if you are interested in forming a team.

As the starting whistle blew, our team immediately showed their intention at a high pace and with a lot of urgency. The large supporters’ group immediately warmed to the occasion and positively contributed to an energetic team effort that soon resulted in the first goal in our favour. The Girls’ High team kept on fighting, but Rhenish managed to score a second goal just before half-time. As the second half started, our team exerted immediate pressure and displayed some skilful hockey with more goals in quick succession. Our solid defence did not provide the opponents with any goal scoring opportunities, with the final score being 6-0. It was a great team effort and we would also like to thank Coach Andrew for his support and guidance! We are looking forward to the next match … against Hershel on Saturday.
