Typefaces All Around Me
Introduction Typefaces
Defintion: a particular design of type What are different typefaces used for in everyday life: - To make text readable, different types used for different media - To send messages - To catch your attention, or to not take away from its meaning - Sometimes the type/design speaks louder than its actual message - Use of colour or design to help get message or context across
Street Signs Street signs can have different purposes. Most of the time they will give you some important information. They should be easy to read and have a strong contrast e.g. black on white writing. Size does matter. Street signs should be easy to see and read even from greater distances. Most signs are designed to provide safety for everyone involved in traffic.
Advertisement Typography is shown in many ads, highlighting how words, letters, numbers, and symbols appear. Designers often use it to set a theme or mood in an advertisement, for example using bold, large text to convey a particular message to the reader.
Advertisements on busses for example should be large and easy to read as the bus moves past you quickly. Large posters or screens on the other hand often use colours or lights to draw attention to them such as the ads on Time Square in New York City.
Brands Brands often use typography to convey a message or to create an easy recognisable image or logo. Classical fonts are for a strong personality, while more modern fonts are for a cleaner, neutral look. Bold fonts are used for making a statement and immediately capturing the attention of the reader.
