Head Coach Adam Howarth

Entering his 11th year as the leader of Eastern Illinois men’s soccer, head coach Adam Howarth has orchestrated a program renaissance the last few years that has resulted in four Missouri Valley Conference Tournament appearances, consecutive double-figure win seasons and a festive atmosphere at home games at Lakeside Field. He has revitalized the winning tradition, which he was also part of as an EIU student-athlete. In 2008, he graduated an accomplished seven-player senior class that led the program to 33 victories during their careers. The 2009 senior class was part of 34 victories during, making it the winningest EIU class of the decade. Howarth played four years (1989-92) at Lakeside Field under coach Cizo Mosina and graduated from EIU. He was chosen as the program’s seventh head coach in July 2000 and has moved into fourth place on the alltime wins list. Howarth will lead the Panthers back into The Summit League in the fall of 2011. Eastern competed in the Mid-Continent Conference, The Summit League’s former moniker, while he was a student-athlete. The 2009 Panthers were the only MVC team to defeat conference champion Missouri State during regularseason play. Alex Harrison tallied nine assists to rank second in the Valley and seventh nationally in assists per th ear game. Eastern led the way with three MVC All-Freshman Team selections. Midfielder Jerry Maddi also earned Honorable Mention All-MVC recognition, the only freshman in the league to receive an all-conference award. Eleven Panthers scored a goal in 2009 and all six game-winners came from six different players. Sean Molony was in goal for six of the seven shutouts and led the MVC in saves. In 2006 and 2007, EIU posted its first consecutive double-figure win seasons since 1988-89. The 2007 campaign was highlighted by a dozen wins, Valley league leaders in goals and assists, and a bevy of individual honors headlined by the program’s first Academic All-America selection. With their 12 wins in 2007, the Panthers matched the program record in the Valley era (1996present). Eight of those wins came in shutout fashion, as EIU set a new high-water mark for defensive excellence in the MVC years. The Panthers opened the 2007 season 4-0 after winning the team titles at the Bradley City Centre Classic and UMKC Invitational. Winning the season opener in overtime foreshadowed the heroics that followed, as 2007 turned out to be the year of overtime. Eastern played in eight OT games, posting a 4-1-3 record. Forward Alex Harrison was involved in all four golden goals, scoring two and assisting on the other two. Brad Peters led the league with 10-plus goals for three straight years (2006-08), becoming the first Panther in the Valley era to record back-to-back 10-plus goal seasons. He was a three-time First Team All-MVC selection as well as an NSCAA All-Midwest Region pick from 2006-08. Mick Galeski assisted on five of Peters’ goals in 2007 en route to finishing with a league-leading 12 helpers, another MVC-years record. Adam Gartner, a four-year starter that closed out his collegiate career in 2008, became the first Panther and MVC soccer player to be selected as a finalist for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award. He was also an ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America honoree. In the classroom, Howarth’s teams have also excelled. Eastern led the league with five MVC Scholar-Athlete Team honorees in 2007. Mike Lewis, who sported a perfect 4.0 GPA at the end of the ‘07 fall semester, was named an Academic All-America, the program’s first such honoree. Gartner later received All-American Scholar kudos from the NSCAA and accompanied his head coach to the annual convention to receive his award. Howarth’s 2006 team proved to be one of his top all-around units. Defensively, the Panthers surrendered the fewest goals (18) in the Valley and shutout seven opponents. Peters followed in the footsteps of other formidable EIU strikers, like Jason Thompson and Jimmy Klatter, and enjoyed a breakout season. Peters led the league with 11 goals, recording just the second double-figure goal total by an EIU underclassman in the program’s Valley era. Galeski, who developed into one of the finest all-around midfielders in the conference after coming to Charleston from his native England, joined Peters on the MVC First Team and NSCAA Midwest Region Second Team. Thanks to a great run away from Charleston, posting eight victories in road or neutral site games, the ‘06 Panthers finished with 11 wins. While an overtime win at long-standing rival Western Illinois and the team title at UW-Green Bay’s Nike Classic highlighted EIU’s early-season success, the victory over Missouri State in the opening round of the MVC Tournament was unquestionably the pinnacle of the campaign. During his first year Howarth led the Panthers to a 12-6-1 overall mark, an undefeated record against non-conference opponents and a fifth-place Valley finish (6-5). The Panthers finished in the top half of one of the nation’s elite conferences, as the Valley sent two teams to the NCAA Tournament Final Four. He coached the nation’s leading goal scorer (Thompson, an AllAmerican), three all-conference players and was the runner-up for MVC Coach of the Year. When Thompson was drafted in the second round – the 15th

overall pick – of the 2003 Major League Soccer draft, he made history, becoming EIU’s first-ever draft pick. Signed as a Nike-Project 40 player, Thompson was named to SoccerAmerica’s National Team of the Week and most importantly represented the program on the United States Under-23 national team. In 2005, Howarth led the Panthers back to the MVC Tournament. Eastern stood tall against thirdseeded Vanderbilt before eventually losing in the sixth round of a shootout. Other season highlights included Klatter’s two hat tricks, the EIU defense allowing more than one goal only once in the Panthers’ eight home games and an EIU record three Panthers earning MVC All-Freshman team recognition. In 2004, Howarth’s team did not allow a goal until the 21st minute of the third game, and that came on a penalty kick. During Howarth’s tenure, eight EIU players have earned NSCAA All-Midwest Region honors. Additionally, Eastern players have received All-MVC accolades 24 times. With Klatter earning First Team All-MVC kudos for the second straight season in ‘05, the forward became just the second player in EIU’s Division I era to be a four-time all-conference honoree. Klatter finished his career among the program’s all-time leaders in goals and points and earned an invitation to the MLS’s Senior Player Combine. He spent the 1999 season as the EIU assistant women’s soccer coach. The Panther women won the Ohio Valley Conference regular season and tournament championships. Six players received allconference honors, including the Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year awards. In 1995, he started the boy’s soccer program at St. Anthony High School in Effingham, Ill. He was both the junior varsity and varsity head coach during his four-year stint. Howarth was named the 1998 Illinois High School Sectional Coach of the Year and St. Anthony won the IHSA Sectional Sportsmanship of the Year award. The Bulldogs finished 10-8-6, their best record since the program’s inception. Howarth has coached at college and high school camps throughout the nation along with assisting and now directing the Eastern Illinois camps over the past 15 years. The EIU Soccer School has become one of the top team camps in Illinois and 20 teams have competed for the title during each of the last three summers. He serves as a state coach for the Illinois Youth Soccer Association and the Olympic Development Program. In the spring of 2007, he was an assistant coach with the Illinois ODP (‘91) team that claimed the national championship in its age division. As the head coach of the same age group a year later, the team finished third nationally. Howarth is a native of Slough, England, a western suburb of London and the setting for the UK-version of the hit sitcom The Office. He graduated from Eastern in 1993 with a double-bachelor’s degree in history and journalism. He also earned his master’s degree in physical education (athletic administration) from Eastern. He received the Premier Diploma from the National Soccer Coaches Association of American in the summer of 2005, his United States Soccer Federation “A” license in 2003 and an English F.A. badge in 1996. Howarth is a member of the U.S. Soccer Coaches Association as well as the NSCAA. Adam and his wife Laura, who played soccer at the University of Missouri, have three children: Sophie, Sebastian and Simon. The Howarths welcomed Simon to the family in October 2008.

Asst. Coach Mark Hansen

A four-year starting goalkeeper at EIU from 2005-08, Mark Hansen is now in his second year as an assistant coach on Adam Howarth’s staff. After graduating from EIU in the spring of 2009 with a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology and sports studies, Hansen spent the 2009-10 school year serving as a student assistant coach while completing a master’s dend ear gree in sports administration. He was elevated to a full-time assistant coach in August 2010. Hansen and his classmates helped lead the Panthers to 33 victories during their careers, highlighted by the program’s first set of consecutive double-figure win seasons (2006 and 2007) since the late 1980s. Eastern reached the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament in each of Hansen’s four seasons, highlighted by back-toback semifinal appearances. Hansen finished his career with a 1.17 goals against average, the top mark by an EIU goalkeeper since 1986. He posted a sub-1.00 GAA in each of his first three seasons. His 0.88 goals against average in 2006 was a big reason why EIU set a team record in the program’s Valley era (1996-present) in that same statistical category. He was credited with five solo shutouts in 2006 and four more in 2007, helping EIU blank eight opponents total his junior season.

Hansen represented the Panthers on the MVC All-Freshman and All-Tournament Teams in 2005. He shutout Vanderbilt in the opening round of the MVC Tournament and also stopped Vandy’s top two scorers in the first two rounds of the subsequent shootout. As a sophomore, he was EIU’s primary goalkeeper in nine of the 11 victories. The 2007 season saw Hansen post a shutout streak of 436 consecutive minutes early in the year, registering a pair of shutouts at the UMKC Invitational to represent EIU on the All-Tournament Team. After helping lead the Panthers to 12 victories that season, his dual excellence as a student-athlete earned him First Team MVC ScholarAthlete recognition. Hansen made a careerhigh 62 saves in 2008. He did not give up a goal in five of the 17 games he played in, but was only credited with one solo shutout. Hansen annually assisted with the EIU soccer school summer camps and was active in the community, working with area youth leagues and the Charleston Futbol Club. He has since taken over as the CFC’s Director of Coaching.

Asst. Coach Evan Philpott

A four-year letter-winner at Eastern Illinois from 2006-09, Evan Philpott is serving as a volunteer student assistant coach this season. He is currently completing his bachelor’s degree in kinesiology and sports studies and is scheduled to student teach in the spring of 2010. Philpott played in 69 games st ear during his EIU career, the most among his graduating class. He made 46 starts, including 18 in 2006 when the Panthers posted an 11-7-2 record. He scored the game-tying goal in the first half of a 2006 home win against Evansville. He was the first EIU freshman to score his first career goal in a Missouri Valley Conference game since 2002. As a senior, Philpott scored the game-winning goal in a home win against Bradley, EIU’s first victory against its instate and conference rival since 2000. He also tallied at least one assist in each of four collegiate seasons. Philpott and his classmates helped lead the Pan-

thers to 34 victories during their careers, making them the winningest senior class of the decade. In 2006 and 2007, EIU posted its first set of consecutive double-figure win campaigns since the late 1980s and reached the semifinals of the MVC Tournament both seasons. Philpott also excelled in the classroom. He was twice named an Honorable Mention selection to the MVC Scholar-Athlete Team. He also annually assisted with the EIU soccer school summer camps. A native of Jacksonville, Ill., Philpott was also a standout wrestler in high school, qualifying for the IHSA state championship meet and earning All-Central State Conference Wrestler of the Year honors.

Positive results against Missouri State, Creighton and Bradley in Missouri Valley Conference play and Alex Harrison’s nine assists highlighted Eastern Illinois men’s soccer’s 2009 campaign. The Panthers were the only Valley team to defeat conference champion Missouri State during regular-season play. The 3-0 victory on Oct. 4 was EIU’s first-ever against MSU in Springfield and first shutout of the Bears in 20 all-time meetings. The rematch in Charleston was canceled due to an unexpected death in the Eastern Illinois athletic department. Eastern topped Bradley, 1-0, Oct. 18 in Charleston on a second-half goal by senior Evan Philpott. The Homecoming Weekend victory ended a 10-game winless drought against EIU’s in-state rival. A week later, the Panthers shutout Creighton for the first time since 1984 in a scoreless draw at Lakeside Field. Eastern also posted an impressive exhibition victory against a Butler team that went on to win the Horizon League regular-season title and earn a national seed and opening-round bye in the NCAA Tournament. Harrison helped setup nine of EIU’s 19 goals, ranking second in the league and among the national leaders en route to earning Second Team All-MVC honors. His total was the second highest in the program’s Valley era (1996-present) and good for fifth in a single-season all-time. He setup a goal in four straight games in September. Twelve EIU players that saw action this season were either new to the program or redshirted in 2008. Kyle Bullock, Jerry Maddi and Ryan Warren represented the Panthers on the MVC All-Freshman Team. Eastern led the way with the three Freshman Team selections. Goalkeeper Sean Molony was tops in the MVC in saves during his first season as a Panther. His six shutouts established a new EIU record in the Valley years. Eleven different Panthers scored a goal in 2009. Jonathan Hinds and Bullock, both underclassmen and former teammates at Champaign Centennial High School, led the way with three goals apiece. The first of Harrison’s nine assists led to the most exciting goal of the season. Mike Picinich headed in a Harrison corner kick with two seconds remaining in regulation to lift EIU to a 1-0 victory at Central Arkansas. Maddi, Chris Pearson and Hinds accounted for the goals in the win at Missouri State. Harrison assisted on all three goals, posting only the second three-assist effort by a Panther in the MVC years. Maddi’s score was the first of his collegiate career. He became the first EIU player since 2001 whose first career goal doubled as a game-winner in Valley play. As an Honorable Mention All-MVC selection, Maddi was the only freshman in the league to be named all-conference. He ranked second among the EIU field players in minutes played. Pearson, meanwhile, scored for the fourth straight season. In doing so, he became the sixth Panther in the Valley era with a goal in each of his four collegiate seasons. Eastern was the recipient of the MVC Fair Play Award for the first time this season. That honor goes to the team issued the fewest number of cards, yellow and red, in conference play. The Panthers were only cautioned eight times against Valley opponents this year and did not have a red card all season for the first time since 2004. FOUR SCORE IN NONCONFERENCE FINALE: Eastern got goals from Jeff Kupiec, Austin Andrekus, Ian McCausland and Grey Genenbacher in its 4-0 home win against Asbury Oct. 26, a contest that doubled as the nonconference finale. Kupiec scored his first career gamewinner and Andrekus, McCausland and Genenbacher, all redshirt-freshmen, recorded their first goals in regular-season play. It marked the first time since a 2006 win against Georgia State in Green Bay that four different Panthers scored in the same game. SIX SCORE GAME-WINNERS: Eastern had a different player score the game-winning goal in each of its six victories of 2009. Mike Picinich (at Central Arkansas), Jonathan Hinds (vs Stony Brook), Kyle Bullock (IPFW), Jerry Maddi (at Missouri State), Evan Philpott (Bradley) and Jeff Kupiec (Asbury) each scored their first collegiate game-winners. Last season marked OT WINS IN THE MVC ERA the fourth time in the program’s MVC era (1996- Year Opponent Score GW Goal present) that six different Panthers accounted for 2007 at Asbury 2-1 A. Harrison a game-winning goal. Eastern also accomplished 2007 at Kentucky 1-0 B. Earl the feat in 2000 (eight), 1998 (seven) and 1996 2007 vs Oral Roberts 1-0 B. Peters (six). Alex Harrison entered the year as the only 2007 vs Belmont 2-1 A. Harrison active Panther with a game-winner in his career. 2006 at W. Illinois 1-0 B. Earl A 1-0 Win in Valley Play: The Panthers ended a nine-game losing streak in Valley games ending in 1-0 fashion with their home win against Bradley on Oct. 18. Coincidentally, EIU’s last 1-0 victory against a MVC opponent was also against Bradley in Charleston (in 2000). However, EIU did defeat Drake, 1-0, in the opening round of the 2007 MVC Tournament.

Following the 1988 season, Eastern Illinois retired Erik Proffitt’s jersey. A two-year letter-winner, he recorded one goal and seven assists while playing in all 38 games in his two seasons (1987-88), both Mid-Continent Conference championship campaigns. Originally from Wichita, Kan., his life was tragically cut short at the age of 20.
