THE CITY WITHIN THE HOUSE STUDENT HOUSING, MALMÖ, SWEDEN AWA R D E D T H E D U R AV I T P R I Z E
This project is my Master Thesis from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, School of Architecture. The starting point is Malmös development from an industrial city to a city of knowledge with both a large University and a lot of small and medium-sized businesses. The building in focus, the boiler workshop, was once an important part of Malmö shipyard, and therefore an important part of the city of Malmö. Today, the building is abandoned and matures with new-built offices and modern residential buildings as its closest neighbours in the new district of Västra Hamnen. The rapid development from pure industrial area to modern office and residential area makes it particularly important to preserve the traces from the important industrial history. The Project is a transformation and the new functions are studenthousing, offices and studios intended for small and medium-sized businesses and a large public space with auditorium, gallery etc. The projects main intention is to work as a small city inside a house which can offer both stillness and motion.

IN THE CITY OF MALMÖ’S Program of Values it is described how they want to establish a cultural passage trough the neighbourhood of Västra Dockan. The cultural representation should be in the old industrial buildings cultural heritage as well as in the new functions that move in to the buildings such as Skånes Dansteater and various educational activities. By placing a small coffebar outside of the large workshop th passage is divided and makes it more interesting to take different ways around or trough the building. It also prevents the outside plazas from being too big. Instead it creates two smaller, more intimate urban spaces who invites the visitor in to the building and its inhabitants.

THE INNER UNITS are inspired by the industrial and the mechanical. With a sinusoidal corrugated sheet as a facade and steelbeams as a loadbearing structure. The corrugated metal sheets are perforated with insulation behind them therfore they get acoustic absorbing properties. The inner units hold common functions, such as auditorium, gallery, library and study. The large industrial hall is partly insulated at the worst affected areas such as roof and windows, it will therefore be able to keep a temperature at ca. 15 째C. The inner units as well as the apartments and offices are further insulated to keep a more comfortable temperature.

The studenthousing apartements settles behinde the existing wall creating a small balcony for each apartment. This stresses the idea of the new functions as furniture inside the large hall. The clear pace and rythm in the facade is kept and the balcony parapet in corrugated metal sheet is slightly tilted which gives the facades a more marked expression. At the ground floor the businesses store windows protrudes and creats an interaction with the public life of the of the “cultural passage.

STONEMASONRY F R E D E R I K S B O RG C A S T L E
Frederiksborg castle is situated in Hillerød, north of Copenhagen and was built in the first decades of the 17th century. The castle is constantly is continuously under restoration and it’s foremost all the sandstone details that are in need of replacement. In view of this, it has long been discussed building a stone masonry on the castle grounds. The project is based on the old Renaissance castle ability to find a balance between part and whole, building component and composition.

THE TOOLBOX
I started out building small sections or situations of the castle grounds. Three demountable models whose parts could be gathered in a “toolbox. This toolbox could then be used in my studies of finding a structure for the new stone masonry, based on the existing conditions.
33
THE NEW STONE MASONRY became a reinterpretation of the exising building components of the castle grounds. For example: the rounded tower on the corner becomes a lapidarium, the distinct main building becomes the main workshop and the secondary building added on becomes an entrance and technical facilities. It also finds its scale in the castles de-escalation. The materiality of the stone masonry, concrete, is not to be found on the site but is chosen because of its ability to interpret the materials on the castle grounds. Both the modular properties from the facades ande the relief effect from the sandstone becomes present in th precast concrete elements. As well as the red pigmentation creates a connection to the red brick. Trough both materiality and structure the new stone masonry becomes a new part in the new whole, a building component in the large composition.

URBANIZATION AND THE VILLAGE H Ă˜V E , D E N M A R K
The project is based on the extinction of rural life, as a result of increased urbanism. Is it possible to revitalize the countryside all year long? Is it necessary? Is it possible? This project gives a suggestion on how to create a combination between an urban and a rural life with the help of small and cost-effective houses and focus on teleworking. Many contemporary workplaces offer the ability to work remotely, at least a few days a week. With an incorporated work studio in the rural home arises an alternative to city life and suggestions on how to revive the countryside.

CONSTANTLY EMBRACE I work with the feeling of always being embraced or enveloped by the village. The strategy to deploy the units in the village is based on pointwise embrace those who are walking along the village road. With the placement close to each other and the road and always the working studio towards the public. The work studio creates almost a shop window towards the public road, it also creates a public filter that makes it possible to position the housing tightly to the public. But still maintaining the feeling of being enclosed inside the private home.

ALGEA PROCESS PLANT AV E D Ø R E H O L M E , D E N M A R K
The project is a transformation of an existing storehouse in Avedøre Holme, south of Copenhagen. The area consists of predominantly industrial buildings. As part of a larger algae production in the waters off Avedøre Holme the project suggests a processing plant for extracting protein for pig feed and biogas from the harvested algae. Architecturally the project is basd on initial surveys of the existing building. The effect of discovering individual elements in the otherwise monolithic building was a guiding motif trough the process.

THE INTERIOR STRUCTURE is also seen as family of individuals working together both functionally and esthetically thanks to materiality and design language. The corrugated metal sheets relates to the industrial function and the wooden framing explains where the human interaction takes place. The functions are clearly divided in three parts: Staff areas, such as laboratory, dressing room, control room etc. Visitor areas, auditorium, exhibition, reception and machine areas wich occupy far the largest parts of the hall.

FIELD STUDIES PA PE R M I L L A M A L F I , I TA LY
Each semester of the Master’s Programme Cultural Heritage, Transformation and Restoration includes a two week course of exclusively focus on surveying. The course is led by Restoration Architects Thomas Kampmann and Søren Vadstrup and begins with studying the building both technically and historically. The technical methods of the survey range from simple sketches to the use of a Total station.

CASE STUDY IN THE HISTORY OF TRANSFORMATION N E U E WAC H E , B E R L I N WO R K S H O P W. A RC H I T E C T W I L L I A M M A N N The Case Study was led by Architect William Mann (Witherford Watson Mann Architects) and was to create an emotional awareness of various transformation projects through history. My case study projects was Neue Wache in Berlin, a building originally drawn by K.F. Schinkel in 1815 and soon after World War I transformed by Heinrich Tessenow. The architectural transformation may not be as dominant as the radical change of meaning the building has undergone through the history of Germany.

Elevation Detail Case Studey in the History of Transformation Neue Wache, Berlin, Germany
TESSENOW’S TRANSFORMATION radically changed the meaning of the Neue Wache, the architectural alterations were modest but powerful. The exterior transformation was quite subtle. The facade mainly remained as Schinkel originally drew it with the tower-corners of the roman castrum and the Greek Portico, as the historic symbol of 19th century victory. The changes Tessenow did replaced the old entrance with three doorways sealed by iron gates. The old side-windows were filled with brick in the same manner as the original wall, leaving the relief as the only trace of the old windows. OBVIOUSLY TESSENOW REMAINED the history of the building by barely touching the exterior and the signs of victory and created a new layer of death inside. In his last scheme he took advantage

of Schinkels inviting portico and totally turned Neue Wache into a part of the public space, a part of the living germany. A memorial that gave both history and identity to the people of the Weimar Republic. I think that even though Tessenow distincly separated the exterior from the interior he created an interior space which was highly monumental. In a way an interior that better lived up to the expectations from the outside than Schinkel’s asymmetrical two storey interior. Returning to the thoughts about Schinkels design as the theatre of war, Tessenow now created two scenes with two very different pieces playing at once. The people of the Weimar republic has become a part of the ensemble.
