TO EDUCATE AND ACT AGAINST GUN VILENCE

Gun violence has significantly increased within the past decade and has caused many lives to be lost. Currently, in Rochester, we are in a gun violence state of emergency; this was issued in response to the surge in both shootings and deadly shootings. My design is to create a memorial that tells the story of 3 individuals; Neamiah Wilson, Lysaun Curry, and Trenton Cook. This memorial will act as a place to remember the victims, promote antigun groups to hold events, and educate and advocate for gun control policies to be mandated and enforced. In addition to a memorial, there will also be a small kiosk for donations to various charities and organizations

St Joseph's Church is a Catholic church in Rochester, New York, with a rich history. It was established in 1866 to cater to the increasing Irish immigrant population in the region, and the original structure, a small wooden building, was erected in 1868. However, it was destroyed by a fire in 1899. The existing St. Joseph's Church was designed by renowned architect Andrew Jackson Warner and finished in 1902, presenting an impressive example of Gothic Revival architecture, featuring stunning stained glass windows, intricate wood carvings, and a massive pipe organ. The church has undergone several renovations and additions throughout the years, such as the construction of a new altar and sanctuary in the 1960s. St. Joseph's Church has been a significant part of the local community, providing its members with various spiritual and social services. Today, the church still serves Rochester, providing a venue for worship, community, and outreach to the less fortunate.

Within this project, the materials and color palette is basic to not interfere with the main message intended. The exterior is majorly gunmetal corrugated steel to act as a shell for the violence caused to the victims. The corners and seams are held up by wood to emphasize how a community can root together and grow. Upon stepping into the main area, the space feels like a neighborhood enhancing the effect a strong community can have on a space. The house facades were split into three primary colors to describe the design's main fuels. In this case, the three colors represent three stories of gun violence victims in the full-color spectrum of victims and stories within Rochester, NY.

TARGET AUDIENCE

Each zone was designed to create calming, comfortable spaces for its target audience while including robust spaces catering to their many needs. These spaces flow through one another to create a design that creates unity, functionality, personalist, and visual interest. The main areas of this space are the outdoor playground, meeting spaces, indoor village, and stories of three victims of gun violence and quotes from their loved ones.
