In the past month, I’ve flown to Tanzania twice with RwandAir. On both occasions, I enjoyed flipping through the pages of Inzozi. I like that there are a mix of stories highlighting Rwanda’s attractions, as well as other international destinations. The article on the orphaned gorillas and conservation efforts was especially interesting. The magazine gave me great ideas for other trips to take and I’m looking forward to my next RwandAir experience.

Inzozi’s Pick / Selection Inzozi I read with interest the piece on Adrien Niyonshuti and the Rwandan cycling team. Framing this uplifting article in both the hills and the history of Rwanda, Philip Gourevitch highlighted a story of recovery and achievement. As with much in Rwanda, it’s not just about individual accomplishment but also the country’s rebuilding. The author’s talent and connection with Rwanda made it a great read. For motion sickness, tummy ache (due to food you are not used to), headaches from altitude change, dryness in the airplane or lack of sleep.... and my yoga mat! The Financial Hub of Rwanda Termed by some as overly ambitious, the Kigali City Master Plan (KMP) continues to forge ahead in its quest to successfully develop sustainable approaches to urbanization. Kigali authorities believe its city master plan is an articulated vision for the city’s future and are currently inviting investors to be part of this dynamic journey. The Rwanda Social Security Board in partnership with the Rwanda Development Board, the Ministry of Infrastructure and the Kigali City Council are now unveiling for sale, 9 prime property plots, located in the Rwandan capital, Kigali. Known as the Rugenge Plots, this property is part of Phase 1 of Kigali’s Central Business District (CBD1). The new Kigali CBD Core is a signature of the latest development in Kigali and expected to be the future financial hub of Rwanda and the region, with national and international financial institution headquarters. Kigali city features over 730 square kilometres of hills and valleys, and is rapidly opening up itself as a premier destination for real estate investment. The Rugenge Plots were initially 20, of which 11 have been sold and three have been fully developed with high-rise mixed use for commercial and apartment buildings. Developed sites include the Rwanda Social Security Board building, which consists of an impressive 14 story commercial and residential building; the RSSB commercial high rise with approximately

Infrastructure to be made available at the Rugenge Plots will consist of water and electricity services, sewage treatment as well as communication systems through the use of fibre optic cables. With regard to specifications, Permissible Land Use includes commercial use on the first floors or first two floors and residential use above the first floor. Conditional Land Use includes public facilities; hotels; service apartments and Petrol stations. Currently, Kigali measures 731 square kilometres with a population of about 1.3 million and a household size of 4.8 million. It is believed that the city population will more than double to 2.9 million by 2025 and most likely five million in long term. About 17 percent of the city is currently urban land, while 50 percent is used for agriculture while the rest is preserved for nature. According to the RSSB Director General Angelique Kantengwa, the sale of the Rugenge Plots in the CBD1 are “also targeting local investors who can group themselves to buy these plots. With the condominium law, an individual can own part of a building”

ocated deep in Rwanda’s southwest, and spanning over 1000 square kilometres, Nyungwe Forest National Park is home to the largest selection of orchids in the world, brightly coloured birds, playful primates and over 250 types of trees. A haven for avid hikers and occasional walkers, the park offers a range of trails into different parts of its lush, vibrant ecosystem. Guided walks depart from the central Uwinka Reception Centre, the western Gisakura entrance and the eastern Kitabi entrance.

Canopy Walkway The canopy walkway offers guests a bird’s eye view of the forest. Opened in 2010, it is the only one of its kind in East Africa and the third on the continent. At 50 metres above the forest floor, the 90-metre long canopy walkway offers unique face-to-face encounters with colourful butterflies, graceful birds and active monkeys. Majestic hardwood trees dominate the upper canopy, and small trees, purple blossoms and lush ferns all flourish below. Orchids and wild begonias bloom brightly and bamboo plants are also abundant in the higher altitudes.

Un paradis pour les avides randonneurs et les amoureux de la marche, le parc offre plusieurs types de parcours de randonnée à travers son vibrant et luxuriant écosystème. Les randonnées avec guide prennent leurs départs à la réception de la central d’Uwinka, à l’entrée Ouest de Gisakura et celle plus à l’Est de Kitabi.

La passerelle suspendue La passerelle inaugurée en 2010 et qui unique dans cette partie de l’Afrique de l’est est suspendue à 50 m du sol sur 90 m de long, offrant une vue panoramique sur la foret et permettant une rencontre de près avec de magnifiques espèces de papillons en tous genres, de gracieux oiseaux, et des primates jouant de branches en branches. De grands arbres majestueux dominent la partie supérieure du parcours et les plus petits arbres aux teintes mauves fleurissent en contrebas à côté de luxuriants bourgeons. Les orchidées et bégonias sauvages à côté de jeunes tiges de bambous abondent également un peu plus en altitude.

While the view may be better from above, Nyungwe is equally intriguing from the forest floor. Stretching across the national park, a network of 13 different dirt trails takes you deep into the heart of the forest. The calls of the great blue turaco resonate through the forest’s four diverse vegetation zones, which are home to over 1000 different types of plants, some endemic to the Albertine Rift.

Embark on a beautiful 10.6 km Ishumo waterfall circuit from the Gisakura park entrance. From the tea fields, the trail crosses small streams and moves through ravines filled with giant tree ferns before a windy descent to the waterfall. Although small in size, the Ishumo waterfall is striking and if you are lucky, monkeys will join you for the view.

In Bird Area” by Bird Life International. While they can be seen from all of the park’s trails, dedicated bird watchers can embark on Gisakura’s bird watching trail or explore the Rangiro road for a chance to see some of Nyungwe’s rarer species.

Primate Tracking As you drive along the windy road that passes through the forest, monkeys and baboons often appear scampering down from mountainous slopes and tall trees. Thirteen different primate species all call the forest their home, including a semi-habituated “super-troop” of between 350 and 400 colobus monkeys. The largest troop in the world, Nyungwe’s colobus monkeys appear scattered across the canopy, straddling branches and eating leaves. Black in colour, with white whiskers, shoulders and tail tips, this troop is incredibly social as they acrobatically soar from one tree or vine to the next. Equally sociable are Nyungwe’s chimpanzees. After an early wake

In up and drive to either the Uwinka/Banda site or the smaller Cyamudongo Forest, chimp tracking begins. Down narrow paths, through thick areas of vegetation and after scaling rocky passages, some of the chimpanzees’ 36 different calls become audible. Sharing 98.7% of their DNA with humans, chimpanzee behaviour models our own, which is evident when watching them play games, groom each other, eat and relax. Glimpsing the strong, beautiful animals as they go through their day is a mesmerizing experience.

Lights fade from red to blue to green, music thumps, hands begin to clap and soon, the room roars with cheers as Ethiopian jazz legend Alemayehu Eshete belches out classics from the stage. It’s Wednesday night at Addis Ababa’s premier jazz bar, Jazzamba, a staple among tourists, music-lovers, diplomats and anyone seeking a fun night out in the Horn of Africa capital. The club, opened in 2011, is the de facto home of Ethiojazz, a burgeoning genre that mixes traditional Ethiopian music with modern jazz. The style brings together living legends – namely Alemayehu and his contemporaries Girma Negash and Bahta Gebrehiwot – with young emerging talent looking to make a name on the Ethiopian music scene. 22

L’établissement qui ouvre ses portes en 2011 est de facto le berceau de l’Ethiojazz, un style bourgeonnant qui mélange percussions traditionnelles et Jazz contemporain. Ce style réunit des légendes vivantes-notamment Alemayehu et ses contemporains Girma Negash et Bahta Gebrehiwot – avec de jeunes talents qui cherchent encore leur place sur la scène musicale éthiopienne. Le legendaire et charismatique Alemayehu Eshete musician ethiojazz en concert au Jazzamba, le plus grand Jazz Bar d’Addis Abeba. Ethiojazz was born in the 1960s, when the grandfather of the movement, Ethiopian-born Mulatu Astatke, travelled to England and America to study and returned home, injecting classic Ethiopian tunes with new instrumental sounds, namely the keyboard and base guitar, creating a unique musical fusion. The genre’s heyday, however, was cut short with the takeover of the repressive Derg regime in the 1970s. The genre’s leading artists were killed, jailed or exiled and the music all but died. It wasn’t until the end of the Derg in 1991 that cultural freedoms were restored and many of the banished diaspora returned home. Today, the music lives on. Located in the heart Ethiopia’s famed Piazza neighbourhood at the Taitu Hotel – built in 1898, it is the country’s oldest—Jazzamba is the only club in town offering live jazz seven nights a week. If you’re lucky, you’ll catch Alemayehu on stage, complete with his traditional Ethiopian shoulder dancing spliced with Elvis Presley-style hip-shaking and infectious ear-to-ear smile that the septuagenarian routinely flashes. His characteristic tunes are a lively melee of jazz, funk, swing, blues and, of course, local folk. Think James Brown meets Miles Davis meets old-school Ethiopian acoustics. Every week, Alemayehu’s music fills the candle-lit room, forcing even the most rigid of guests to shake along to the beats. It’s the perfect spot for some after dinner entertainment where you can enjoy one of Ethiopia’s famous St. George or Meta beers. Or, if you fancy arriving early to ensure a table in the often-packed bar, order a bottle of local Axumite wine and a freshly baked pizza or Nile perch, just two dishes on their brimming menu.

Alors que la plupart de mes camarades de classe passent leur été à mémoriser des notes pour préparer leurs examens de fin d’année au collège. Je passe le mien à m’inspirer de la biographie couverte d’une voile fine de Jack Kerouac “On the Road”. En contraste avec le conte de Kerouac qui a exploré les tréfonds de la culture Américaine au milieu du 20e Siècle, le terrain de ma narration serait le Rwanda.

While most of my classmates spent the summer cramming notes for their last college exams, I spent mine drawing inspiration from Jack Kerouac’s thinly veiled biography, “On the Road.” In contrast to Kerouac’s tale, which explored the underbelly of America’s counterculture during the middle of the 20th century, my narrative playground would be Rwanda.

Avant Mi-juin, J’étais envoyé. J’avais envoyé ma demande de visa au préalable, pris ma vaccination contre la fièvre jaune, et même cherché des emplois à temps partiel pour joindre les deux bouts. La seule chose qui me restait à faire était de me trouver un logement. Comme par miracle, à travers une communauté en ligne des “Couch Surfers” – Ou les membres créent des profils et accèdent a un réseau social des mil-

By mid-July, I was set. I had sent in my visa application, took the required yellow fever shots, and even secured a couple of freelancing jobs to keep me afloat. The only thing left to do was find housing. Thankfully, through an online community of “CouchSurfers”—where members create profiles and get access to a social network of millions of benevolent strangers who provide free housing to travelers in their area—I was able to secure who I was staying with, for how long, and even had access to pictures of my future accommodations. My first ‘couching’ experience in Rwanda was a four-night stay with a Belgium CSer who regaled me with stories about his encounters with beautiful Rwandan women and his penchant for fast moto rides across the city. Sleeping on his alternate, bed bug invested mattress, however, wasn’t quite as entertaining. A few nights later during a toga-themed party, I was introduced to a Danish CSer who encouraged me to join her on a trip to Goma in the DR Congo where we eventually stayed with a Muslim couple who had been CSurfing unofficially for several years. The couple, however, broke one cardinal CS rule: they hosted people on a proper bed. Needless to say, I never slept better that month. My favorite CS experience, however, was also my most random. It stood out because it was the closest I got to being “On The Road” with Jack. I was out in Kigali with a couple of friends when I received a text from a Portuguese CSer I had met online just before coming to Rwanda. We decided to meet at KBC Planet, one of Kigali’s local bars. We had made no plans before that night, but had been pushed by curiosity to meet each other. For hours, we danced together, but just as fast as we met, we went our separate ways.

Dormir sur son matelas de réservé envahi par des punaises n’était pas aussi divertissant. Quelques nuits plus tard lors d’une fête j’ai été présenté à une Danoise qui m’a encouragé à me joindre à elle pour un voyage vers Goma dans la République Démocratique du Congo où nous avons été hébergés par un couple des musulmans qui faisaient du Couch Surfing illégalement pendant plusieurs années! Le couple a cependant manqué à une loi fondamentale du Couch Surfing : ils offrent aux visiteurs un lit décent. Je dois avouer que je n’ai pas mieux dormi ce mois là! Mon expérience favori du Couch Surfing a cependant a été aussi la plus aléatoire. Elle s’est distinguée par ce que je me suis retrouvé le plus près possible de “On The Road” avec Jack. J’étais sorti avec des amis à Kigali lorsque j’ai reçu un texto d’un ami Portugais que j’ai connu grâce au Couch Surfing avant de me rendre au Rwanda. On a décidé de se rencontrer à KBC Planet, un des bars de Kigali. On n’avait pas fait des plans au préalable pour la soirée, mais la curiosité nous a poussés à nous rencontrer. Pendant des heures, nous avons dansé ensemble, mais nos chemins se sont séparés à la même vitesse qu’elles s’étaient rencontrés! Ce genre de Spontanéité était ce que Kerouac recherchait durant ses voyages, et c’est exactement ce que le Couch Surfing m’a donné. En plus du logement gratuit le site offre beaucoup plus, en vous incitant à vous engager dans des activités fugaces, qui brulent “tels des bougies romaines dans la nuit”, sans se soucier du lendemain.

This type of spontaneity is what Kerouac sought during his travels, and what CS gave me. In addition to free accommodation, the website offers so much more by forcing upon you fleeting moments, burning “like roman candles in the night,” without any worries about what tomorrow will bring.

Reliving History Rétrospective The drama behind the world’s first heart transplant on display Le drame derrière la première transplantation du Cœu By / Par: Cheryl Brownstein The Groote Schuur Hospital Museum in Cape Town, South Africa, opens with a large black and white photograph depicting the exact spot where 25-year-old Denise Darvall was struck by a car as she attempted to cross the street with her mother on December 3, 1967. Although fatally injured, Ms. Darvall’s heart continued to beat offering Dr. Christiaan Barnard, a noted cardiac surgeon, the opportunity to perform a heart transplant, a procedure, which until this time, had only been performed on animals.The meticulous preparation of all the staff and operating rooms, and the drama that evolved between Ms. Darvall’s father, who agreed to the procedure, and the reluctance of her brother, is all captured in the museums display. From a balcony overlooking the operating room where the transplant was carried out on 53-year-old Lewis Washkansky, mannequins of the patient, doctor and nurses, bring alive this piece of medical history. The heart-lung machine is there, as is the blackboard that denotes the exact minute of the successful operation. A visit to Dr. Barnard’s office with his original desk and personal mementos follows. Down the adjoining hall, the many letters that he received are on display. “Can women be heart surgens?” asks one young child. There is even one where a child explains that she has a bird and cat and would like to know if she could do a heart transplant on them! There are other letters, however, which chastise Dr. Barnard for tampering with “God’s will”. The ethical issues associated with heart transplant were highly debated at this time. Though Mr. Washkansky survived for only 18 days, the course of history was changed forever. Many more operations would be performed by Dr. Barnard and colleagues worldwide. With each success, the patient survived longer and there are plaques and memorials honoring these pioneering doctors, recipients and donors throughout the museum. The whole tour takes about two hours; the museum has been open for only two years and many of the staff are proud volunteers. It is a most fascinating and worthwhile experience. Spend some time there--it will be a memorable addition to your visit to Cape Town! 28

Le musée de l’Hôpital Groote Schuur à Cape Town/Afrique du Sud ouvre ses portes sur une large photographie en noir et blanc montrant l’endroit exact Denise Darvall jeune fille de 25 ans s’est fait percuter par une voiture alors qu’elle traversait la route en compagnie de sa mère ce 3 décembre 1967. Malgré ses graves blessures, le Cœur de mademoiselle Darvall ne cessa pas de battre, ce qui donna l’occasion au Dr. Christiaan Barnard, de procéder a la toute première transplantation cardiaque, procédure qui jusque la n’avait été tentée que sur des animaux. La méticulosité des préparatifs et du corps et des installations médicales, le drame qui éclata entre le père de mademoiselle Darvall qui donna son accord pour cette opération et la réticence du frère de cette dernière, tous ces moments sont également captures sur les murs du musée.

D’un balcon d’observation surplombant la salle d’opération dans laquelle la procédure eut lieu sur Lewis Washkansky, 53 ans, des mannequins représentant le patient, et le corps médical rendent vie et hommage à ce tournant dans l’histoire de la médicine. La machine d’assistance respiratoire et cardiaque est toujours en place ainsi que le tableau sur lequel est marqué l’heure exacte à laquelle l’opération fut couronnée de succès. S’en suit une visite au bureau du Dr. Barnard avec sa table d’époque et ses souvenirs personnels. Dans la pièce suivante de nombreuses lettres y sont également exposées. « est ce qu’une femme peut devenir chirurgienne ? » demande une jeune fille. Une autre de surenchérir qu’elle a un oiseau et un chat et désire savoir si elle peut effectuer une transplantation du cœur de l’un vers l’autre! Mais il ya également des lettres qui accusent le Dr. Barnard de braver la « volonté divine ».

Les questions d’éthique associées à une transplantation du cœur étaient un sujet à grand débat à l’époque. Même si le patient Mr. Washkansky n’aura survécu que 18 jours à cette opération, le cours de l’histoire était changé à jamais. Le Dr Barnard effectua plusieurs autres opérations de ce type ainsi que par plusieurs de ces collègues dans le monde entier. Avec chaque succès l’espérance de vie du patient devenait plus importante, et des récompenses et trophées en tout genre ornent les murs du musée en hommage à ces pionniers de la médecine, ainsi que les donneurs et receveurs de cœurs. La visite complète prend au moins deux heures; Le musée n’est ouvert que depuis deux ans et plusieurs membres du personnel sont de fiers volontaires. C’est une expérience des plus fascinantes. I remember walking on the main commercial avenue, Istiklal Caddesi, feeling like I was moving between every country and every tribe of the world. Its multi-cultural, multi-lingual, colourful puzzle of people, perfumes and sounds used to make me feel dazed in the middle of the day and hypnotized at night. A good starting point for a tour of Istanbul is Taksim Square and from there one should move towards the Galata Tower to enjoy its splendid view. Continue past the small shops selling instruments from Asia and Europe to the Galata Bridge and the accompanying fish market. Cela fait des mois que j’ai quitté Istanbul, mais les rythmes électrifiés des clubs, les goûts éxotiques et balkaniques émanant des restaurants, ainsi que les sourires engageant des locaux sont toujours gravés au fon de mon être. Je me souviens du moment où je marchais tout au long de l’avenue commerciale principale, Istiklal Caddesi, j’avais l’impression de voyager dans tous les pays et visiter toutes les tribus du monde. C’est multiculturel, on y parle toutes les langues. Un puzzle coloré des peuples, des parfums et des sons avaient le don de me procurer un sentiment de stupéfaction au milieu de la journée et ce spectacle m’hypnotisait la nuit. L’endroit idéal de départ pour visiter Istanbul est la place Taksim, d’où l’on se rend à la Tour Galata et jouir de la vue splendide. Marcher tout au long des petites boutiques où les artefacts en provenance de l’Europe et de l’Asie sont Vendus jusqu’au pont Galata et le marché aux poissons dans les parages. En traversant le pont on peut admirer le fameux port naturel Golden Horn Harbour à la droite et le majestueux 30

your left. At the end of the bridge you will be in Eminonou district where you can catch a ferry from Sirkeci to the Asian side of the country. Alternatively, walk down to Sultanahmed, the city’s historic center, to feel the magnificence of a past era. Visit the majestic Sultan Ahmed Mosque, also known as the Blue Mosque, and the Hagia Sophia—the Christian basilica, turned Islamic temple, turned museum. A little bit further you’ll find both the Topkapi Palace and the Archaeological Museum. Make sure not to leave Istanbul without trying the local mussels. They are huge, fresh and delicious. The humidity from the Black Sea ensures that the city’s fish, especially at the taverns on the Princes’ Islands, are excellent. But always save room for more! Istanbul is full of local confectioneries, bursting with syrup and other pure ingredients. Don’t forget to taste Raki, the local drink, made from grapes or raisins.

L’humidité provenant de la mer noire procure aux poissons de la ville un goût excellent, plus particulièrement ceux des tavernes des iles du Prince. Il faut surtout garder de l’espace pour plus de délices! Istanbul est plein des confiseries locales, qui débordent des sirops ainsi que d’autres ingrédients purs. Il ne faut surtout pas oublier de goûter au Raki, la boisson locale à base de raisins.

Beer and brochettes. The words do not only refer to a particular type of food and drink—they refer to a lifestyle. Whether fish, goat, beef or chicken, brochettes are often accompanied by crispy chips, indecent amounts of mayonnaise and most importantly Rwanda’s national drinks: Mützig, Primus and Skol. Brits have fish and chips, Scots have haggis, Greeks have moussaka and Ugandans have matoke. In Rwanda, B&B unite people and are the closest thing to a national dish. However, the history of brochettes is veiled in mystery. It is a general belief that the Belgians introduced them during colonial times. Before that, people would get together and share a whole leg of goat or beef. Whatever the origins may be, there are many places in Kigali to enjoy them: Milles Collines is the place to splurge while taking in stunning views of the city; in Nyamirambo – the most eclectic quarter of Kigali – clusters of bars engage in fierce B&B competitions; and at White Horse in Kiyovu the staple dish is combined with music on Thursdays. From the Rim to the Floor of the Ngorongoro Crater

About 2.5 million years ago one of the world’s tallest mountains exploded and collapsed creating the Ngorongoro Crater. Today the Ngorongoro Crater is a wildlife sanctuary, home to about 30,000 animals. The vast open grasslands of the crater (technically a caldera) provide a terrific opportunity to see the ‘Big Five’. We begin our safari by dropping our camping gear at the Simba campsite where we can’t help but notice zebra grazing among the pitched tents. Located on the rim of the crater, this is the only public campsite in the park. Our decision to camp makes it home for the night. The view from the rim is amazing. Perched about 610 m above the crater floor, which measures about 260 km2, you see grasslands, the fever forest, Lake Magadi and marshland. Driving down to the crater surface it becomes clear why this place is home to so many animals. The steep walls and abundant water and food supply eliminate the need for animals to migrate. The presence of grazing animals, such as gazelles, wildebeests, zebras and Cape buffalo ensure a constant food supply for major predators. Of the major safari wildlife only the giraffe is missing due to precipitous crater walls and lack of tall trees. We were warned that even given the prime conditions of the Ngorongoro Crater, you never know what you will see. Earlier in the day on our way out of the Serengeti we were treated to a rare sighting of a leopard awake and roaming the branches of a roadside tree. We were feeling lucky already. 34

Il ya à peu près 2.5 millions d’années, l’une des plus grandes montagnes au monde s’écroula et donna naissance au cratère de Ngorongoro. De nos jours, le cratère de Ngorongoro est un sanctuaire de la vie sauvage, il abrite à peu près 30,000 espèces animales. Les grands espaces verts du cratère (appelle un Caldera) offrent la chance rare en d’autres contrées d’observer les ‘Big Five’. Nous commençons notre safari par déposer notre équipement de Camping au camp Simba, où nous ne pouvons nous empêcher de remarquer un zèbre broutant entre le pique des tentes. Situé au bord du cratère, ce camp est le seul site publique dans tous le parc, nous décidons d’y passer la nuit. La vue de notre emplacement est à couper le souffle, perché à près de 610 m du fond du cratère, qui lui même possède une superficie de 260 km2, vous y verrez de grands espaces verts, la forêt, le lac Magadi et le marais. Pendant la descendante en jeep vers le fond du cratère, il devient facile de comprendre pourquoi il abrite autant d’espèces animales. Les parois surélevées et l’abondance en eau empêche toute migration. La grande population de gazelles, gnous et buffles, est une source constante de nourriture pour les grands prédateurs. De toute la faune, la grande absente est la girafe à cause des parois trop glissantes et de l’absence de grands arbres pour sa nutrition. L’on nous indique qu’à cause de son état primaire, le cratère vous surprendra toujours. Plus tôt dans la matinée nous avons été les chanceux témoins du lever d’un léopard et de sa souple avancée de branches en branches sur un arbre en bordure de route.

We pass many grazing animals along with a small herd of elephants on the way to the lake, which appears covered with pink flamingo. We pull up alongside two female and one male lion. We watch and are rewarded when they awake to groom and then … mate. Apparently when in heat mating can happen every 15 minutes. It did! After a picnic lunch we head out looking for the black rhino knowing it’s unlikely. Just as our drive is about to end we spot one, with the help of binoculars and our excellent guide, and then another a little farther away. The Big Five all in one day! Back at camp dinner is delicious and warm, but the night is cool. We forgo a cold shower, zip our tent and tuck into our sleeping bags. Camping makes me feel that our experience is more intimate that those offered at game lodges. Perhaps that feeling is due to side stepping that fresh elephant dung on the way to our tent.

Nous nous arrêtons près de deux lionnes et d’un grand mâle. Nous les contemplons et sommes récompensés lorsqu’ils daignent se réveiller et…s’accoupler. Il parait que lorsqu’ils sont en chaleur ils s’accouplent toutes les 15 minutes, ils nous le prouvèrent! Apres un déjeuner en pique nique nous nous mettons à la recherche du grand rhinocéros noir même si nous savons nos chances pratiquement nulles. Mais alors que notre randonnée allait prendre fin nous en apercevons un, et puis un autre plus loin, Big Five et tous en un seul jour! De retour au camp, le diner est chaud et succulent, mais la nuit elle, est froide. Nous nous imposons une douche froide, refermons soigneusement nos tentes et nous enfonçons dans nos sacs de couchages. Le camping me donne la certitude que notre séjour est meilleur que celui offert par les lodges. Peut être ce sentiment me vient-il a la grosse fraiche bouse d’éléphant que j’ai faille piétiner à l’entrée de ma tente.

and brief bursts of sunlight kiss far-flung plateaus that jut out from the endless flats. The green of the small savanna trees blend into the hazy blue acacia shrubs that spread into the horizon. This is the Great North Road—stretching from the Nile Delta to the continent’s southern tip—and after decades of war had made this section of the road impassable, the new Turkishbuilt highway seems to reflect South Sudan’s aspirations for a new beginning, and for us an easy three-hour’s drive to Nimule National Park. 38

In “There were no people here,” explains our guide, Jacob Ochen, as we cross what was at one time a battle field between South Sudanese fighters and the Sudanese backed Lord’s Resistance Army. “Everyone had gone.” We pass scattered villages of round tukul huts thatched from the tall spear grass. Everything stretched out before us is lush. We climb a plateau until the park’s game is spread out in the valley beneath us, where the Bahr al-Jabal flows north out of the powerful Fula Rapids past Juba and through Al-Sudd in the east. Soon we are standing on the riverbanks listening to the thunderous roar of the rapids—“The best stretch for white water rafting in Africa!” yells Mr. Ochen, pointing to where private expeditions now launch their rafts and navigate a five-day trip to Juba. Through the crashing, wavy mist on the other side, a young fisherman throws his uncoiling net into the river. A fishing camp lies in the shade of large neem trees downstream; three papyrusthatched domes hug the steep riverbank. A man sits on a rock fileting a catfish, weighted nets and ropes dangling from the branches behind him. When the afternoon rainstorm clears we depart to a small trading port on a sea-blue johnboat. Before climbing in, I ask an old man who was weaving a mosque-shaped, three-piece papyrus basket how, exactly, it caught fish. He spreads his hands wide and smirks. “The fish come in, play around a bit,” he says. “And they can’t come out!” He uses it to catch Nile perch, tilapia, helicopter fish, basket, mud, snail, and catfish with teeth that will “bite off the finger!” Ranger Michael—part of the Wildlife Conservation Society’s effort to train over 200 Nimule Park Rangers—stands on the bow like an expedition leader one sees in paintings of old Africa, pointing at large, rising hippo snouts and Nile crocodiles slithering from tall papyrus groves into the water beneath us. Goliath Herons spread their massive wings against the silhouette of Mount Kinyeti—at 3000 meters tall it is greater Sudan’s largest mountain— looming in the puffy clouds beyond the park.

We soon jump from the boat onto the marshy shores of Opekale Island in search of game, where a large family of elephants had been spotted drinking the day before. Michael leads us through ten-foot high elephant grass into a clearing where we see two Ugandan kob antelope butting heads beneath a Barassus palm tree. We creep up on a family of wild boar until they dart past us into the tall grass beyond; strange barks from the baboons echo through tropic neem trees high above us. I arrived in the country four days earlier to explore its burgeoning tourism industry. South Sudan, the world’s newest country, raised its flags in 2009, four years after signing a peace agree-

Il étend ses larges mains et sourires. “Les poissons arrivent pour jouer un peu», dit-il. “Et ils ne peuvent pas resortir!” Il s’en sert pour attraper la perche du Nil, le tilapia, le poisson hélicoptère, le panier, de la boue, l’escargot, et le poisson-chat avec des dents qui “mordent les doigts!” Ranger Michael-encadre les efforts de la Société de conservation de la faune sauvage pour former plus de 200 gardiens du parc de Nimule, en tant que chef ‘expédition. On voit dans les peintures de la vieille Afrique, montrant de grandes gueules d’hippopotames et des crocodiles du Nil rampant dans les hauts bosquets de papyrus dans l’eau en dessous de nous. Les hérons Goliath déploient leurs ailes massives contre la silhouette du mont-Kinyeti à 3000 mètres de haut, la plus importante des montagnes qui constituent la plus grande partie du Soudan dans les nuages gonflés au-delà du parc.

I spent 16 hours in ze plane to follow zat migration,” explained Holger Poehler, the German-born owner of Juba’s Da Vinci Lodge, as he lit another Marlboro Red, his long, sun-bleached brown hair hanging from a ponytail. “From Boma up to ze Suud swamps, through ze Suuds to find ze Suud elephant. I mean, found zem all.”

For ten years the German had worked his way south down the Great North Road leading overland safaris from Alexandria to the great plains of East Africa and south to Johannesburg. In 2005, Mr. Poehler moved to Juba after hearing about a migration of endemic antelope that rivaled Serengeti’s Great Migration of wildebeests that stampede between Tanzania and Kenya every year. He talked of the Boma Plateau and the Suud wetlands that are home to more than 800,000 white-eared kob. During the wet season they move en masse, nearly 1500km south, in search of lands less susceptible to flooding. When joined by Mongalla gazelles and tiang antelopes, enormous herds of over 1.3 million migrating animals chase the rains and green grass south to Bandingalo National Park. Dense columns of these herds can stretch 80km long and 50km wide and wildlife biologists recently estimated aerial counts that actually exceeded Serengeti’s annual migration.

Young boys wrestling in a cattle camp outside Bor Jeune garçons s’amusant à la lute dans un parc à betail à l’extérieur du Bor Earlier, after arriving at Mr. Poehler’s riverside hotel, we took a boat to a nearby island three kilometers upriver—an old slave trade center—where he was building ten self-contained bungalows with private balconies on the water. Mr. Poehler had just completed a similar project in the Leo Mountains near Ethiopia, where leopards roamed above the breathtaking Katepo Valley. Its exclusive location offered his adventure-seeking guests access to world-class hunting and paragliding over the valley below. Where Mr. Poehler’s ambitions mirrored the vast potential of a country moving forward, our trip to Bor the following day pointed to a number of ingrained challenges it must still overcome. After bouncing along a dirt road through flatlands and forests for nearly six hours, we pulled into a town where its inhabitants sleep beneath tin-roofed shacks. An old woman smoked her wood pipe as blazing bush fires threw plumes of smoke into the darkening sky. Beyond the town, I walked through a Dinga pastoralist camp where long-horned Ayuel cattle slept scattered between huts. In Bor, as in many other parts of the country, pastoralism is the primary means of survival, which explains why there are so many deadly cattle raids between various tribal groups. As naked children scampered along, the village chief confirmed that cattle feuds were among the village’s main concerns along with disease, drought, lack of education and food insecurity. Back in the city, the bustling melting pot of Juba stood in stark contrast to Bor’s sparse lands. In the Konyokonyo Market, a maze of narrow alleys sold a wild assortment of merchandise shipped from Dubai: bright plastic chairs stacked ten feet high, women’s blouses hanging from ceiling fans, shoes, mats, cheap 42

en quête de clients d’accès à la chasse de calibre mondial et parapente au-dessus de la vallée en contrebas. Les ambitions de M. Poehler reflétaient l’immense potentiel d’un pays à avancer. Notre voyage à Bor le lendemain signalait un certain nombre de défis enracinés que celui-ci doit encore surmonter. Après avoir emprunté un chemin de terre à travers plaines et forêts pendant près de six heures, nous sommes arrivés dans une ville où les habitants dorment sous des cabanes couvertes de tôles. Le ciel s’assombrit. Au-delà de la ville, je me promenais dans un camp de bergers Dinga où le bétail à longues cornes Ayuel dormait dispersé entre les huttes. À Bor, comme dans beaucoup d’autres parties du pays, l’élevage est la principale source de revenu et de survie, ce qui explique pourquoi il ya tant de vols mortels de bétail entre divers groupes tribaux. Comme des enfants nus couraient un peu partout, le chef du village a confirmé que les querelles de bétail constituaient les principales préoccupations du village en plus des maladies, de la sécheresse, du manque d’éducation et de l’insécurité alimentaire. De retour à la ville, le melting-pot animé de Juba était à l’opposé de terres rares de Bor. Dans le marché Konyokonyo, une dédale de ruelles étroites, on vendait un assortiment sauvage de marchandises expédiées de Dubaï: des chaises en plastique brillant empilé dix pieds de haut, des blouses pendues aux ventilateurs du plafond, des chaussures, des tapis, du papier peint bon marché, des charbonniers et des bongschicha de provenance indienne. Le sifflement aigu de la musique éthiopienne hurle contre les tambours congolais et américains de hip-hop de l’autre côté du marché. Toutes sortes d’odeurs s’affrontent: diesel, viande de vache rôtissant sur une broche tournante, la sueur poignante d’un jeune Ougandais sous un grand sac de farine sur ses épaules.

wallpaper, charcoal burners and shisha bongs made of Indian glass. The high-pitched whine of Ethiopian music blared against Congolese drums and American hip-hop from the other side of the market. All sorts of smells clashed together: diesel, cow meat roasting on a rotating spit, the poignant sweat of a Ugandan boy weighted down beneath a large sack of flour on his shoulders. Driving away from the market the traffic ceased and we soon passed an open meadow sprawled with modern houses and six-story office buildings. Immediately after was a shantytown of mud-brick huts, a sea of tin roofs glaring beneath the noon heat. That evening I ate Nile Perch pan fried in olive oil and covered in onion, garlic and green pepper corn and watched white Cattle Egrets fly over the river against the bridge and the setting sun. The city felt peaceful and I used the opportunity to reflect on my trip and the prospects for South Sudan’s tourism sector. As the country continues to negotiate its traditional challenges with new opportunities—trying to improve fundamental matters of health, education and security, while harnessing ambitions of a floating hotel—I felt confident that it was only a matter of time until South Sudan would become another one of East Africa’s major tourist destinations. Not only does the country offer wildlife, breathtaking scenery and kind, hospitable people; the population—a diverse mix of East Africans, Europeans and Asians—all want to see it succeed and share its vast wealth with anybody willing to buy the ticket take the trip to discover it themselves.

On voyait des hérons garde-bœufs voler au-dessus de la rivière contre le pont et le soleil couchant. La ville se sentait calme et j’ai profité de l’occasion pour réfléchir sur mon voyage et les perspectives pour le secteur du tourisme au Sud-Soudan. 44

In to Cape Town, the gateway to SA’s most renowned winelands. This September, Events Africa and Illume Creative Studio, with the help from sponsors such as RwandAir, Serena Hotels, Tigo, Hotel des Mille Collines and Tele 10 amongst others, are organising September Affair-“Kigali Uncorked,” an event designed to expand SA’s wine market in Rwanda and East Africa by bringing together some of SA’s leading chefs and wine makers to showcase their goods. Although some of these SA wines have been present in Kigali grocery stores for years—and are in themselves a reward to drink—enjoying a tall, fine glass of Mont Rochelle’s 2006 Merlot or Haute Cabriere’s Unwooded Pinot Noir 2011 in their natural settings, surrounded by majestic mountains and the roar of the sea, is simply beyond words.

The list of local attractions, which range from cage diving with great white sharks to a visit to the historic Robben Island—the prison site of former South African President Nelson Mandela and many other political prisoners during the apartheid era—are bountiful.

At first glance the city’s well defined infrastructure is more reminiscent of a European capital than an African city, and its diverse population produce an amalgamation of cultures, sounds and tastes that are hard to define, but easy to enjoy.

A vineyard in Franschhoek Un vignoble en Franschhoek During my weeklong stay in the city, I frequented three hotels— the hip and modern Pepper Club, the classic and elegant Taj, and the romantic and quaint Dutch Manor. Each accommodation, in addition to a warm reception, offered me a complimentary bottle of local wine upon my arrival. Normally, a man of my stripe would have been content to lounge by the pool and consume one delightful bottle after the next. However, for the sake of you, the reader, I knew it was imperative to venture out to Stellenbosch and Franschhoek to better grasp what exactly I was drinking and for which occasion each wine was best suited. Plus, it was too cold to swim.

radled by the Franschhoek Mountains, Haute Cabriere resides on a beautiful stretch of land originally owned by Pierre Jourdan, a French Huguenot, who was granted the land in 1694 and planted its first vines. Today, the winery is owned by Mr. Achim von Arnim who, together with his wife, Hildegard, and a dedicated cellar and vineyard team, create a genuinely South African wine in the tradition of French wine culture. According to Mrs. von Arnim, her husband fell in love with French wine and its quintessential cultivar—Pinot Noir—during a fouryear stint in Europe. When he returned home in the 1980s to begin his own winery, Mr. Von Arnim was determined to pioneer the cultivation of Pinot Noir in South Africa. “At the time it was illegal so he had to smuggle [the vines] in,” explains Ms. von Arnim over a tall glass of Haute Cabriere’s elegant Pinot Noir 2008. Today, the planting of Pinot Noir in South Africa is of course legal and the cultivar is enjoying growing popularity in the local market. Haute Cabriere’s red wines, she adds, are all prepared in the classic French Burgundy style, which implies that grapes are picked earlier, the wine has a lower concentration of alcohol and is aged in French oak barrels for only ten months to ensure there is limited wood flavour. The 2008 vintage, she adds, can be kept for up to ten years. “The more it ages, the more the tannin is broken down and the more the true fruit flavours come out.” The combination of cultures inherent in Haute Cabriere’s wines makes it an appropriate accompaniment to explore the cacophony 50

From the breakfast buffet’s mouthwatering croissants to the delectable menu at Country Kitchen—one of three restaurants located on the estate—where each dish is paired with the appropriate Mont Rochelle wine, quality transcends every aspect of your stay. “Wine is about a life style,” explains Albert Gatare, Director Mont Rochelle. “We want guests to experience the real Art of Wine Tasting.” Like Haute Cabriere, most of Mont Rochelle’s wines are prepared in French oak barrels where they are matured for 16-24 months before aging in a cellar for 1-3 years. The 2007 Artemis, a well structured wine that reflects clean liquorice spice and red fruits, is particularly well suited for a meal of fish or duck breast, while the 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon, textured with lush, ripe flavours of blackberry, was a perfect complement to my meal of lamb chops and basil puree.

In curity, on Sundays, the popularity of Mzoli’s turns Gugulethu’s streets, referred to as Native Yards, into a tourist hotspot. Under a large corrugated roof, with djembe drum beats echoing in the background ample quantities of beer are consumed while clients wait for their orders of meat to be cooked and spiced in the traditional South African braai or BBQ style. Mzoli’s, explains longtime employee Weber Welile, moved to the area 15 years ago, but over the past two years, through a combination of word of mouth and visits from celebrities such as British chef Jamie Oliver, it has become a popular Sunday destination.

ne could spend days driving around the Cape without tiring of the region’s breathtaking scenery. Nevertheless, the route that leads from the city to Cape Point is particularly popular. Along the way, visitors can stop at Simon’s Town overlooking False Bay for a taste of small town culture, and Boulders Beach for an opportunity to swim alongside a colony of friendly penguins. Once reaching the Good Hope section of Table Mountain National Park, it is a short climb to the viewing area from where the intersection of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans becomes visible. The fact that Cape Point is situated in the Cape Floral Region, a World Heritage Site, home to one of the richest areas for plants in the world, means there is no shortage of lush fynbos and other flora on display. If you arrive early enough, it is even possible to organise a picnic in the park. And what would a South African picnic be like without at least a few bottles of fine wine? The Tokara Grenache Rose 2011, full of sweet strawberry aromas and a crisp finish of peppery notes, would be a wise decision for the occasion. The grapes of the 2011 are grown just 5km from the ocean and as a result you can smell and taste the sea’s minerals with each delicate sip. No trip to South Africa is complete without a cage dive with the ocean’s most feared creature. Gansbaai, the world capital of the great white shark, is a two hour drive from CT, and less than an hour from the scenic, coastal town of Hermanus. There are numerous shark outfits in Gansbaai, but I put my trust in the White Shark Projects, an organization that focuses as much on shark conservation as it does on diving. After a plentiful breakfast, our group boarded the 36-foot, custom-built white shark dive catamaran and travelled nearly 8km out to an area near Dyer Island in the Atlantic, to get up close and personal with the ferocious fish. Although boats go out all year long, winter (June-August), paradoxically, is the warmest and clearest time to dive. After slipping into our wetsuits and scuba masks and observing the crew dump a mix of mashed tuna fish, anchovy oil and sea water—known as chum—into the sea to attract the sharks, five of us at a time slowly anchored ourselves into the partially submerged cage, making sure to keep our feet and hands in the designated spots. “Make sure to keep them in the right place,” our boat captain Gerald Engelbrecht cheerfully reminded us. “If not, you can lose them.” Once we were settled, the crew began to hurl a large chunk of tuna—attached to a fishing chord—into the sea as bait. As the sharks approached the meat, we were told, “Go! Go! Go!” shark diving language for “pull yourself down under the water NOW and watch these dangerous predators as they swim towards you with their mouths wide open!” The sharks never actually reach the meat in time, but and at one point, perhaps out of frustration, one of our larger visitors opted to bite the cage instead. Carefully nestled inside, the experience was slightly nerve wracking, but ultimately, incredibly rewarding. Back on shore—as the nausea subsided—I felt a sudden craving for a glass of La Motte’s 2008 Pierneef Shiraz Grenache. The full-bodied wine—an exciting mix of Shiraz, Grenache, Mourvedre and Carignan grapes—is perfect for any adventurous wine lover. With the sun beginning to set on an adrenalin packed day, the taste lingered on my tongue in much the same way that the Cape and its abundant treasures continue to resonate in my mind and spirit.

Les raisins de la 2011 sont cultivées à seulement 5 km de l’océan et, par conséquent, vous pouvez sentir et goûter les minéraux de la mer à chaque gorgée délicate.

Une fois que nous étions installés, l’équipage a commencé à lancer une grande partie de thon attaché à une canne à pêche dans la mer comme appât. Comme les requins s’approchaient de la viande, on nous a dit: «Go! Go! Go! » Ce qui en fait veut dire «retirer-vous sous l’eau maintenant et regarder ces dangereux prédateurs comme ils nagent vers vous leurs bouches grandes ouvertes!» Les requins n’ont jamais pu atteindre la viande à temps, mais à un moment donné et, peut-être dû à sa frustration, l’un des plus grands de nos visiteurs a opté de mordre la cage à la place. Soigneusement niché à l’intérieur, l’expérience a été éprouvante angoissante, mais en fin de compte, incroyablement gratifiant. De retour sur terre -la nausée calmée-, j’ai sentis une envie soudaine d’un verre de La Motte 2008 Grenache Shiraz Pierneef. Le vin corsé, un mélange passionnant de Shiraz, Grenache, Mourvèdre et Carignanraisins est parfait pour tout amateur de vin aventureux. Avec le soleil qui commençait à se coucher sur une journée remplit d’adrénaline, le goût sur ma langue est resté à peu près de la même manière que le Cap et ses trésors abondants continuent de résonner dans mon esprit.

Aucun voyage en Afrique du Sud n’est complet sans une plongée en cage avec la créature la plus redoutée de l’océan. Gansbaai, la capitale mondiale du grand requin blanc, se trouve à deux heures de CT, et moins d’une heure de l’antique ville côtière d’Hermanus. Il existe de nombreuses tenues de requin à Gansbaai, mais je mets ma confiance entre les mains du White Shark Projects, une organisation qui met l’accent autant sur la conservation des requins que sur la plongée. Après un petit déjeuner copieux, notre groupe est monté à bord du 36foot ; un catamaran shark dive construit sur mesure et parcouru près de 8 km sur une zone proche de l’ île de Dyer dans l’Atlantique, pour un tête a tête avec le poisson féroce. Bien que les bateaux sortent toute l’année, paradoxalement l’hiver (Juin-Août) est le temps plus chaud et plus claire à plonger. These are just some of the many intriguing activities available in the Kilimanjaro region that are often overlooked by visitors in favour of climbing the famous mountain or embarking on a renowned northern circuit safari. Apparently some of the area’s attractions are so appealing that Monduli, the three-and-half- year-old giraffe who lives on the nearby Dolly Estate, was photographed going for an impromptu swim in the estate’s pool in June 2012.

Kilimanjaro Golf Estate and Wildlife Reserve The Kilimanjaro Golf Estate and Wildlife Reserve is a new addition to the area. Located near Usa River, the golf estate sits on a former sisal plantation that borders Dolly Estate’s Nduruma Polo Club, and is routinely frequented by small game and impressive birdlife. When completed, the 18-hole course will be the only championship one in the area and will add a whole new dimension to the current golf playing field by “giving people an option for something different,” says Kiligolf General Manager Zummi Cardoso. The course was designed by David Jones, a professional golfer turned course designer who first came to East Africa in 1970 to play in the Kenyan

In Open, which he eventually won in 1989. Since then has been involved in the local golf scene, both on the course and off. A former European Tour player and Irish National Coach, Jones began designing golf courses when, in 1988, he was asked to revamp a local Irish course. He retired from professional golf in 2001 to focus on design and has since designed a total of 17 golf courses in Ireland, Finland, Turkey, Kenya and now Tanzania. “The setting is so unusual,” says Jones of Kiligolf. “It is so tranquil and there is a sense of enclosure with two big mountains behind you.” The natural environment, he says, presented an “interesting design challenge,” but instead of changing the landscape, Jones preferred to work with it. The end result is a narrow, challenging, championship course, whose potential is, according to Jones “equal to anything in Africa.” In addition to the championship course, the estate has plans for two hotels and has 400 plots of land that management hopes to develop into a vibrant community of Tanzanians, East Africans and Europeans. Homeowners can then choose to include their properties in Kiligolf’s villa rental program; the spacious, beautifully decorated homes are an ideal place for a holiday. Guests will have access to Kiligolf facilities, including golf lessons, exercise areas and the clubhouse. They are also encouraged to join the Ndaruama community to watch the high-energy, competitive polo games next door. The top nine holes and driving range will be open to the public by the end of 2012 and the bottom nine will follow in 2013. Ultimately, says Jones, Kiligolf will “raise the bar significantly in

Cultural Tourism in Usa River Neighbouring Kiligolf, and flowing down from Mount Meru, is the Usa River. Home to a sprawling town of the same name, the vibrant community of approximately 30,000, explains local guide Frankie, is a mix of “Muslim and Christian, rich and poor, all living together.” The Usa River cultural walk, which takes you past houses with large satellite dishes, as well as traditional dwellings with mud walls, attests to that. After praticising traditional Swahili greetings: “jambo,” “mambo,” and “poa” with Frankie, you set off to explore the main road, market area, and smaller dirt paths. Everyone along the way is friendly and welcoming; whether it is a young man selling fresh produce in a small roadside shop, a woman cutting hair in a local salon, or a group of 70 smiling orphans on a morning snack break who bombard visitors with a steady stream of hugs.

Described as a “thought-provoking experience” by Marc Lawson of Mount Meru Game Lodge, walking through Usa River provides visitors with a glimpse into the daily lives of ordinary Tanzanians.

Eco-centric Tourism at Ngare Sero Mountain Lodge Set off the main road on the slopes of Mount Meru, the Ngare Sero Mountain Lodge overlooks a majestic forest, a clear lake and beautiful gardens. Built in 1905, the “uncompromisingly eco-centric” lodge, located between the towns of Usa River and Arusha, is a local institution and has been owned and operated by the Leach family since the 1970s. The Leach family’s eco-friendly projects are in full effect as their dam provides both the lodge and local communities with constant access to fresh water. Farther down the lake, their hydroelectric turbine produces electricity and schools of fry swim through their organic trout farm. The Leach’s environmental commitment doesn’t end there – they also converted their vehicles and generator to run off the vegetable oil that they produce from croton tree seeds. To fully maximize your stay, one needs at least three nights at Ngare Sero. In addition to the on-site walks and horse riding, a number of excursions can be organised. The magical and often overlooked Arusha National Park and the Chemka Hot springs, described by manager Katya Ryabina as a “natural infinity pool,” both merit a visit. The lodge also owns the Lake Natron Camp close to the Kenyan border, which is equally eco-centric and boasts a herd of rescued camels and the oldest known hominid footprints.

Most embark on ambitious expeditions to the summit, which was first reached by Europeans in 1889. However, for those without the necessary time or hiking experience for a full mountain climb, day hikes on Africa’s tallest mountain can also be arranged. Spending a day hiking up the popular Marangu route is the perfect way to get a taste of the Kilimanjaro experience. Blue sky and rays of sunshine peek through the moss-covered trees lining the occasionally rocky path dotted with brightly coloured impatiens. On the ascent, you encounter climbers on their way back down from the summit and who offer words of encouragement. The day hike on Marangu takes you up approximately 1000 metres to the route’s first campsite and then on to the small Maundi crater, where, on a clear day, the summit and Lake Chala are both visible. After enjoying a meal on the crater rim and glimpsing the top of the impressive mountain, you descend along the same route back to the entrance gate. On the way back down Kilimanjaro in the late afternoon, the trail is much calmer and there are moments of absolute tranquility as you walk beneath the trees. The entire trip takes between six and eight hours, depending on pace and how much time you spend along the way. Day hikes can also be organized on the Shira route. However, instead of embarking on the first section of the trek, hikers are driven to the plateau, approximately 3000 metres high, where there is simple walk to enjoy.

Camping on Lake Chala

vibrant blue crater lake and the peaceful watering hole favoured by the area’s elephants. Just under an hour’s drive from Moshi, Lake Chala appeared 5000 years ago when a volcano erupted causing what was then a big hill to sink into the ground. Located three quarters in Tanzania and one quarter in Kenya, water now flows down to the deep, freshwater lake from Mount Kilimanjaro. A winding path takes you down from the crater’s rim to the lake where the water is clear and refreshing. The campsite’s watering hole welcomes the area’s wild animals, and on some mornings up to 200 elephants stop to drink as they roam the area. Impala, kudu, colobus monkeys and hyena are also regular visitors. In addition to basic tents, the campsite also hires out extra tents and allows people to pitch their own on the grounds. There is a fully stocked bar and restaurant, as well as community kitchen that campers can make use of. At the end of 2012, the campsite will open ten luxury tents overlooking Lake Chala and its neighbouring watering hole.

Town Visits The towns of Moshi and Arusha are natural stopping points for anyone embarking on a safari trip or a mountain trek. While they are most often visited only for pre-departure briefings, both towns have their own unique atmospheres and are deserving of more time than they are usually allotted. Both offer vibrant markets, a selection of restaurants and local crafts. One can find a large selection of Tanzanite at Arusha’s Cultural Centre & Art Gallery and unique handmade leather products at Moshi’s Shah Industries. Sandra and Frank of Moshi’s Tembo Tamu B&B are welcoming hosts and provide a wealth of information about the area.

Matatus (local buses), costing approximately Rwf200, operate throughout the city and make for a typical, crowded “African” travel experience. On August 11, 2012, Kigali was the first city in Africa to host the prestigious Dîner en Blanc® event, bringing together people from different walks of life for an elegant pop-up picnic in the middle of the city. It was a night born out of French tradition and infused with African warmth and flavor.

Launched by a handful of friends more than 20 years ago, Paris’ Dîner en Blanc® brings together nearly 15,000 people each year in some of the most prestigious locations throughout the French capital. Now coordinated by Aymeric Pasquier and Sandy Safi, the Dîner en Blanc® events are hosted in over a dozen cities around the world. This year, Kigali was the first city in Africa to host the event.

Lance par une poignée d’amis il ya de cela plus de 20 ans, le Dîner en Blanc® parisien rassemble plus de 15.000 personnes dans les emplacements les plus populaires de la Capitale Française. Aujourd’hui coordonné par Aymeric Pasquier et Sandy Safi, le Dîner en Blanc® est, de nos jours, organisé dans plus d’une douzaine de villes du monde entier, Kigali étant la première ville africaine à organiser cet événement.

Hosted by Illume Creative Studio, in partnership with Events Africa, Dîner en Blanc® -Kigali boasted over 375 guests dining under the stars. Guests for Dîner en Blanc® were specifically invited by the organizers and each guest was asked to invite their friends. Guests were required to follow the Dîner en Blanc® rules, which required everyone to wear all white and bring their own table settings and décor.

Organise par Illume Creative Studio, en partenariat avec Events Africa, le Dîner en Blanc® -Kigali a réussi à attirer plus de 375 invités pour un excellent diner sous les étoiles. Chacun des participants au Dîner en Blanc® était spécifiquement invite par les organisateurs, et devait à son tour inviter ses amis. Les participants étaient tenu de respecter le règlement d’ordre intérieur qui régit le Dîner en Blanc® , et qui exige que le code vestimentaire soit tout de blanc vêtu, et d’apporter ses propres couverts, décors, et de quoi se restaurer.

Participants were told to meet at one of six different pick-up points around the city and were taken by KBS buses to the main venue. The location remained a secret to ensure all guests arrived at the same time. Once there, guests descended from the buses onto a field of all white.

“One of Illume’s goals is to change what the world sees when you Google Rwanda and we hope this is one of the events that will accomplish that,” explains Joan Mazimhaka of Illume Creative Studio. “We also wanted to put together a fun event for Kigali’s residents, regional guests and tourists and put Kigali on the map as an events destination.”

The highlights of the evening included a live performance by local artist Mike Kayihura, and a brilliant, eclectic music mix by DJ Eric Soul that ranged from classics such as Brigitte Bardot and Edith Piaf to Kanda Bongo Man, Baloji, Fela Kuti and Cesària Evora and MC Solaar and Tumi & the Volume . As Rwanda celebrates 50 years of Independence, the city is alive with activity and possibilities. Being the first African city to host the event, Kigali is proud to be part of this global phenomenon and hopes to see it grow throughout Africa.

rom a distance, Mani Martin looks like any other smartly dressed guy in his late twenties. His dreadlocked hair is pulled back neatly and he wears a blue and green striped

shirt and shiny, polished leather shoes. But as our lunch at Camellia Tea House progresses, small but unique features, such as a set of extravagant diamond cufflinks, checkered pants and gold rings on three fingers, betray his celebrity. “Mani was born a star,” his younger brother Joshua had told me a day earlier. “He has that something extra, something special. It has been like that since we were small.” Ever since Mr. Martin can remember, he has been singing. As a six-year old church choir singer, he impressed audiences in his native Rusizi in Rwanda’s Western province with his amazing voice. “I composed my first song when I was nine-years-old,” he recounts. “I didn’t even know what I was doing, or that I was composing a song! I just felt the music from somewhere deep inside.” The lyrics for the song, eventually entitled, “Barihe,” meaning, “Where are you?” were inspired by the loss of numerous of his classmates during the genocide. “The song asks where have they gone and will I ever see you again?” says Mr. Martin. The song was so remarkable that both Mr. Martin’s music teacher and classmates couldn’t believe that he had written it. “When I finally managed to convince them, that was the moment when I realized that I actually had a talent for singing,” he says. The same teacher, adds Mr. Martin, would later encourage him to pursue a music career. In 2004, at just 16, Mr. Martin recorded his first song in a professional studio. The song – “Urukumbuzi” – became an immediate hit and was awarded “Song Of The Year” by Braliwa and Radio 10. Today, five number one hits and four albums later, Mr. Martin is no longer unsure about his own destiny. “I was made for music,” he says. “What’s so special about him and makes him so rare, especially in Rwanda, is his passion for music,” explains Mr. Martin’s friend and fellow singer, Shanel Nirere. “He is not in it for the money. It is the music.” On September 21, Mr. Martin is launching his fourth album, dubbed “My Destiny.” The date, which coincides with the Interna-

On continue à prendre notre déjeuner à Camellia et on remarque des petits détails distincts comme ses boutons de manchette brillants comme des diamants, un pantalon avec des motifs de damier et des anneaux d’or sur trois doigts qui trahissent sa célébrité. « Mani est né une star », m’avait dit son petit frère Joshua la veille. « Il a quelque chose en plus, quelque chose de spécial. Et c’est comme ça depuis que nous sommes touts petits. »

Mani Martin ne se rappelle même plus quand il a commencé. Il chante depuis toujours. A six ans déjà, il a impressionné son public dans une église à Rusizi, Province de l’Ouest d’où il est originaire, avec sa voix incroyable. « J’ai composé ma première chanson quand j’avais neuf ans » raconte, Mani. «Je ne savais même pas ce que je faisais, j’ai senti la musique venir d’un endroit profond puis j’ai chanté. » Les paroles de la chanson, intitulée « Bari he » ce qui signifie: « Où sont-ils ? » ont été inspirées par la perte de ses nombreux camarades de classe morts pendant le génocide. « La chanson demande où sont-ils passés ? Les reverrai-je jamais ? » explique Mani. La chanson était si impressionnante que le professeur de musique de Mani et ses camarades de classe ne pouvaient pas croire qu’il en était l’auteur. « Après avoir réussi à les convaincre, j’ai effectivement réalisé que j’avais du talent pour la musique » dit-il. Ce professeur l’a même plus tard encouragé à poursuivre une carrière musicale, comme le dit Martin. En 2004, à 16 ans, Mani Martin a enregistré sa première chanson dans un studio professionnel. La chanson « Urukumbuzi » est devenue un succès immédiat et a reçu le prix de la « chanson de l’année » par BRALIRWA et Radio 10. Aujourd’hui, avec cinq titres au hit-parade et quatre albums, Mani Martin n’est plus incertain de son destin. « Je suis né pour faire de la musique », dit-il. « Ce qui fait de lui un être spécial et rare sur la scène musicale, surtout au Rwanda, c’est sa passion pour la musique » raconte Shanel Nirere, une chanteuse et amie de Mani Martin. « Il n’est pas là pour l’argent. To a background of inanga (Rwandan guitar), inigiri, (bells) and ingoma (traditional drums), and modern instruments such as acoustic guitar and electronic bass, Mr. Martin sings passionately about love, peace and national unity in English, Swahili and Kinyarwanda. The album includes the hit “My Destiny,” and the singles: “Rwagasababo”, “Hamani” and Irungu.” Together with his band mates—Christian Ngirinshuti (drums), Didier Ntizatureka (bass), Fabrice Ndengera (acoustic guitar), Daniel Ngarukyie (inanga)—the album represents a step towards a more traditional music-style, which has enabled Mr. Martin to become the first Rwandan world-musician to perform at the Zanzibarian world-music festival, Sauti Za Busara, in February. Mr. Martin says he “wants the audience to feel the music; laugh when it’s funny, cry when it’s sad” and defines it as music to sit down and listen to rather than to dance to. When asked about the defining moment of his career, Mr. Martin recounts a story about Cecile Kayirebwa, a renowned Rwandan artist. “I can’t explain what it is about her that I just love, but since I can remember her songs have just moved me. When I feel them inside of me it takes away my loneliness.” In January 2012, during a rehearsal, Mr. Martin was singing one of Ms. Kayirebwa’s songs when the star herself walked in. “I was so amazed,” he says, his voice becoming increasingly excited. “She told me that it sounded like I was the one who had written that song.” Perhaps one day, a young Rwandan artist practicing one of Mr. Martin’s songs will experience the same sensation when he walks into the room.

In At a time when her peers would be content to stay home and spend their days reminiscing and relaxing, Margit Meissner seeks just the opposite. Consequently, when the opportunity to discover a new country—Rwanda—surfaced this year, she readily accepted. “At 90,” explains Ms. Meissner, “I thought I didn’t have any time to waste.”

Au moment où les autres se contentent de rester à la maison et passer leurs journées à se détendre, Margit Meissner fait exactement le contraire. Et comme résultat : une occasion de découvrir un nouveau pays et quand le Rwanda a fait surface cette année, elle a rapidement accepté. « A 90 ans… Je n’avais pas de temps à perdre. » Explique Mme Meissner.

In fact, ever since Austrian-born Ms. Meissner and her mother were forced to flee France in the early 1940s during the Nazi occupation, she has remained dedicated to the causes of conflict resolution and reconciliation around the world. After World War II, she attended the Nuremberg war crimes trials where she worked to reeducate Hitler Youth, and after chronicling her experiences of the Holocaust in a memoir entitled, “Margit’s Story,” she began an organization called Voices vs. Violence in Washington D.C., where she also volunteers at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.

En effet, depuis que l’autrichienne Mme Meissner et sa mère ont été obligées de fuir la France au début des années 1940 pendant l’occupation nazie, elle s’est restée vouée aux causes de la résolution des conflits et la réconciliation à travers le monde. Après la Seconde Guerre mondiale, elle a participé aux tribunaux des crimes de guerre de Nuremberg où son travail consistait à rééduquer la jeunesse d’Hitler, et après la chronique de son parcours de l’Holocauste dans un mémoire intitulé « Margit’s Story » elle a créé une organisation appelée Voices vs. Violence à Washington DC, où elle est aussi bénévole au Mémorial de l’Holocauste des Etats Unis (United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.)

Moreover, nine years ago, Ms. Meissner got involved with Women for Women International (WfWI), an organizations that works to provide female survivors of war, civil strife, and other conflicts with the necessary resources to move from crisis and poverty into stability and self-sufficiency. She has since personally sponsored several women, including a Nigerian, an Iraqi and a Rwandan, for a year each, to help them overcome their challenging circumstances.

De plus, il y a neuf ans, Mme Meissner s’est impliquée avec Women for Women International (WfWI), une organisations qui lutte pour donner aux femmes ayant survécu la guerre, les conflits civiles et autres conflits, les ressources nécessaires pour passer de la crise et de la pauvreté à la stabilité et l’autosuffisance. Depuis, elle a personnellement parrainé plusieurs femmes, dont une nigériane, une irakienne et une rwandaise, pour un an chacune, en vue de les aider à surmonter leurs circonstances difficiles.

Her weeklong trip to Rwanda, she says, was designed for her to become more oriented with WfWI’s operation in Rwanda and see firsthand the fruit of its work. “The program has been very impressive and the staff is very qualified,” says Ms. Meissner. “It sponsors people that have the potential of making something of themselves because they already have that spark.”

During her visit Ms. Meissner had the opportunity to meet Olive Mukamana, the woman she sponsored in 2010, and Francine Kayitesi, a woman whom she will be sponsoring in the upcoming year. “It was a very emotional meeting,” she says of her encounter with Mrs. Mukamana. “She was doing well—she learnt hairdressing—but now it’s hard to find customers.”

Au cours de sa visite, Mme Meissner a eu l’occasion de rencontrer Olive Mukamana, la femme qu’elle a parrainé en 2010, et Francine Kayitesi, une femme qu’elle compte parrainer dans l’année à venir. « Ce fut une rencontre émouvante », dit-elle au sujet de sa rencontre avec Mme Mukamana. « Elle se porte bien. Elle a appris à faire la coiffure, mais maintenant le problème c’est trouver les clients. »

While in the country Ms. Meissner also had the opportunity to sit down with Pasteur David Buchara to hear about his church’s reconciliation program, and to visit Kigali’s Genocide Memorial. Between stops, Ms. Meissner says she enjoyed witnessing Rwanda’s impressive usage of technology and how responsible and disciplined the young children are. “It’s also the cleanest country I’ve ever seen,” she adds.

Pendant qu’elle était dans le pays, Mme Meissner a également eu l’occasion de rencontrer Pasteur David Buchara pour qu’il lui parle du programme de réconciliation dans son église, et visiter le site mémorial de génocide de Kigali. In “Values that transform the way people think and behave towards each other are as essential as any major public health programme,” explains Dr. James Smith, CEO of Aegis Trust, the international genocide prevention organization that developed the Kigali Genocide Memorial (KGM). “This involves, in education, developing the capabilities that enable people to challenge negative ideas and work against discrimination and prejudice.”

“Les valeurs qui transforment la maniere dont les gens pensent et agissent envers leurs semblables sont aussi importantes que tous les programmes de santé quad’on puisse imaginer,” nous explique le docteur James Smith, CEO d’Aegis Trust, L’organisation mondiale pour la prevention des genocides qui est a la base du centre Memorial de Kigali. “Ceci implique au niveau de l’education, de developer les capacities de tout un chacun de questioner des idees negatives et de se battre contre l’injustice et la discrimination.”

There are currently 2.1 million youth in Rwanda between the ages of 15 and 24. Although some are too young to clearly remember the 1994 genocide, and others were born after it had ended, its legacy remains a part of them. Moreover, the sensitive, personal nature of the topic makes it difficult to tackle in the classroom and at home. The Peace-building Education programme that Aegis Trust operates at KGM attempts to change that.

On recense en ce moment 2,1 millions de jeunes qui ont entre 15 et 24 ans. Même si la plupart d’entre eux sont trop jeunes pour se remémorer du Génocide, et que d’autres ont vu le jour après ces tristes evenements, l’Histoire est belle et bien la leur ; sans oublier que la sensibilité du sujet le rend tres dur a aborder soit a la maison aussi bien qu’a l’école. Ce programme d’education sur le maintien de la paix se promet de changer cela.

Approaching the topic of genocide in terms of “before, during, and after,” Aegis Trust recognises that involving the country’s youth in the dialogue is crucial. Their Peace-building programme brings secondary school students to KGM for one-day workshops developed in part by VSO volunteers with backgrounds in trauma counseling.

En choisissant d’aborder le sujet en termes de “avant-pendantapres”, Aegis trust que l’implication de la jeunesse au dialogue est Une etape cruciale. Le programme invite donc regulierement de setudiants du secondaire au Memorial de Kigali pour un atelier de formation diriges par des volontaires VSO sur la gestion de traumatisme post conflits.

“I used to judge anyone from another ethnic or social group than mine, and I could not socialize with them. I was feeling that my group is superior and so, I needed to stick to it, the way people have fan clubs to support their team and criticise other teams,” wrote one of the students who participated in the programme. “But now, I have resolved that we are all one and need to work hand in hand to build our country.”

The 10,000 students who have participated in the programme over the last three years were all asked to take what they learned and share it with their peers. One student who learned about peace-building from friends at school wrote the following: “The visit by students and teachers to the Kigali Genocide Memorial helped me to understand that we are equally human beings.”

“It’s not just learning about historical events,” says Freddy Mutanguha, director KGM, of the programme. “It’s about preventing genocide in my country for generations to come.” Aegis Trust and KGM are currently in the beginning of an expansion phase to extend the current museum, as well as fund a mobile exhibition and teacher-training programme. For the museum to maximise its impact, it is imperative for them to reach students living in rural areas farther from Kigali as well. For more information visit:

Carnegie Mellon University in Rwanda (CMU-R) is introducing new models of education, research and development, and the commercialization of ICT. Currently offering a Master of Science in Information Technology (MSIT), with a Master’s program in Electrical and Computer Engineering to follow shortly in the years to come, CMU-R’s multidisciplinary curriculum strikes a fine balance between technology, business and innovation. On 24th August 2012,CMU-R welcomed its inaugural class of 26 master’s students and commemorated the historic partnership between CMU and the Government of Rwanda. The Governmentof Rwanda offered a 50% tuition scholarship to all East African citizens. Hon. Vincent Biruta, Minister of Education of Rwanda, said: “Rwanda is proud to host CMU as part of the Regional ICT Center of Excellence in Rwanda […]. These scholarships will give students from the region the opportunity to enroll in master’s programs from one of the best universities in the world right here in Rwanda. They will learn from CMU’s renowned faculty about solving problems for our country and this region.” When MSIT student Esther Nkunda was asked how she felt about being a part of the inaugural class she said, ”To be in one of the best-ranked

During the partnership ceremony H.E. The MSIT program is a 16-month professional master’s degree. In addition to the intensive coursework, students will be required to do an internship and practicum. RwandAir due to receive two CRJ-900s RwandAir is expecting two brand new CRJ-900 this October. They will be an addition to our latest fleet of two Boeing 737500, two Boeing 737-800NG and a Dash-8. The state of the art jets are set for delivery to Kigali in October. The MSN 15286 will be handed over to the airline in a ceremony at the assembly plant before being flown via Europe to Rwanda; the MSN 15287 will follow soon after. This brings a lot of joy for RwandAir, the national carrier of Rwanda and Africa’s youngest and fastest growing airline. These purchases are something only Kenya Airways and PrecisionAir, as the only two other airlines to be growing their fleet too in the East African skies, have accomplished in the past. The CRJ-900’S are a big achievement for RwandAir as it expands its routes to the Central and Western African regions. This development reflects RwandAir’s vision that even an airline of a small country can accomplish phenomenal achievements when everyone pulls together in the same direction- the direction of growth and development. RwandAir, celebrates its 10th anniversary this year and the CRJ-900’s arrive just shortly before the anniversary. The CRJ-900 is a stretched 76 seater version of the CRJ-700. The aircraft features two GE CF34-8C5 engines, 13,360 lbf (59.4 kN) thrust with APR, and added leading edge slats. The environmental packs have a target temperature instead of a hotcold knob. The cabin has a recirculation fan which aids in cooling and heating.

RwandAir co-sponsors Golf Tournament in Kigali On August 25-26, the Kigali Golf Club hosted the annual Kigali Golf Tournament by Dubai Holidays and RwandAir. The event saw the participation of seasoned golfers as well as new figures and there were players that came all the way from Mombasa for their first ever Kigali Golf Tournament. The winner was announced on Sunday at an event held at the Kigali Golf Club House. A prominent figure in Rwanda football was crowned overall winner of the tournament with a total of 60 net points. Veteran golfers like Jodeph Semwaga, Innocent Rutamu and Barnabas Kariuki placed 66, 67, and 68 respectively on

Handicap 0-9 on the 36-hole course. Three ladies also placed in this tournament on 63, 67, and 67 respectively on the 0-36 Handicap. A couple of distinguished figures also participated in the event, making this inaugural tournament a fun and pleasurable weekend. RwandAir has pledged to co-sponsor the next Kigali Golf Tournament with Dubai Holidays thus forging a very strong relationship. Dubai Holidays are RwandAir’s partners and offer the discerning flyer on RwandAir flight packages to many destinations within Africa, Europe and beyond. This tournament lead to the Grand Prix event held in Kenya every year.

Enfant, je voulais devenir pilote de ligne. A chaque fois que je voyais le sillage d’un avion dans le ciel, je ne pouvais m’empêcher de me demander qui le pilotait et je voulais devenir cette personne plus tard. Mon parcours chez Rwandair débute à la fin de l’année 2008 en tant que Directeur du département des Ventes. Depuis j’ai occupé les postes de Directeur Commercial, et Directeur du Département des alliances, partenariat et développement du marché. Mon travail consiste en la gestion et la Francine Sharangabo

As Manager for Government and International Affairs, Francine Sharangabo harmonises RwandAir’s expansion with national ambitions As a child I wanted to become a pilot. Whenever I saw a plane in the sky I would wonder who was flying it and I wanted to be that person.

My day starts with a good cup of coffee. I then call on different industry stakeholders, government included, to set up meetings to pave the way for RwandAir’s Commercial Strategy.

I started to work with RwandAir at the end of 2008 as Manager for Passenger Sales. Since then I have worked as Commercial Manager and Manager Alliances, Partnerships and Market Development.

My job entails managing and promoting RwandAir’s aeropolitical and international affairs to meet the airline’s strategic goals. This includes: full involvement in negotiating and implementing bilateral traffic right agreements with different countries; coordinating all initiatives with industry bodies such as IATA, AFRAA; ensuring that we get our government support to achieve the said goals.

What I love most about my job is the opportunity to meet different people. I like to experience different cultures and understand their respective ways of working. Some, I’ve learnt can’t be pushed too quickly, others are quite fast, but it’s always interesting. I also like to witness the fruits of my labor being realized.

Over the next three months I’ll be working on expanding our service to more destinations in both East and West Africa.
