This collection of undergraduate and graduate work is intended to exemplify my skills as a designer as well as my architectural philosophy. I believe in humane architecture. Architecture built in the appropriate the context at the right scale with lasting materials and aesthetic appeal. Together these elements of design establish better neighborhoods and cities, and in turn a better quality of life for all people. As a designer, I strive to achieve a strong sense of place while taking a conscientious urban approach where sustainability is inextricably connected. My process is not informed by any one style or predetermined formula, but rather strives to create architecture that is inventive yet timeless. My ability to find inherent order among these complex components enables me to create projects tailored to their unique environments and the client’s specific needs. It is my greatest desire that all buildings and spaces I design will captivate the human mind and spirit, communicate a respect for the environment and community context, and embody a critical transition towards the future of design.

TRUSTEES GARDEN LOFTS S AVANNAH , G EORGIA Located on top of a bluff along the eastern edge of downtown Savannah, the Trustees Garden Lofts are directly connected to the urban fabric of the city to the west, while take advantage of the open views and salt marsh landscape to the east. The four lofts have varying degrees of indoor and outdoor living space. Wide covered verandas and floor to ceiling windows bring the surrounding nature into the space. The elevator and stair shaft serves as a vertical axis in the center as the elongated terraces cascade outward from its core. The building’s envelope wraps horizontally back and forth through each floor creating a sense of enclosure in some areas and openness in others.

TRINITY EPISCOPAL CHURCH FELLOWSHIP HALL P ASS C HRISTIAN , M ISSISSIPPI After devastating Hurricane Katrina swept through Pass Christian the congregation at Trinity Episcopal Church was broken. Our studio was asked to redesign the exterior of the existing water damaged church and create a new Fellowship Hall. Since water also represents purification, I proposed a channel be placed in the center between the church and the Fellowship Hall. The channel travels through the site along a spiritual reflecting path for members of the congregation to use. The new Fellowship Hall responds to site by opening up to the wooded views to the west and its proposed location is in close proximity to the existing church.

BRAZILIAN CULTURAL RESEARCH CENTER S ÃO P AULO , B RAZIL Nestled between two existing buildings this Brazilian Cultural Research Center is situated on a triangular site along a busy street. The inspiration for the building’s massing came from naturally occurring fractals. The new building is comprised of self-iterating modules fashioned from a leaf pattern. Each module is connected by a main corridor or ‘artery’ comprised of glass. The building creates a V-shaped footprint in which one wing addresses the public street frontage and the other is elevated off the ground allowing users to easily traverse between the adjacent buildings through the newly redesigned courtyard.

EAST MANHATTAN THEATERS N EW Y ORK , N EW Y ORK This former site of a Con-Edison power plant on the eastern edge of Manhattan struggles to bring liveliness to the area. An elevated highway stands as a barrier between the coast and the site. I proposed to remove the highway and to replace it with a more urban minded and pedestrian friendly multi-way boulevard. The two theaters, a musical theater and grand opera theater, may now take advantage of the waterfront park for outdoor events. The theaters are intended to have a duelling quality and a strong solid/void relationship. A majestic courtyard entry connects the theaters, and also at the ground floor are commercial and retail spaces to help the area thrive.

[FAB]RICATING HABITAT A PROTOTYPE

FOR

HABITAT

FOR

HUMANITY

This elegant yet simple home design for Habitat for Humanity serves as a new option to their current stock of housing models. My fictional client was a single mother with three children who gives private at home piano lessons. The prototype was also intended to be situated anywhere in the Southeastern United States, therefore the house has a long overhanging roof and ample covered porch space for community interaction. It has three bedrooms and two baths and is based on five large plywood “ribs”, resembling piano keys, which are centered on 10’ increments. The open floor plan allows for flexibility, family interaction and enough space for the client’s baby grand piano.

For this project I proposed the walls be formed of Papercrete - a construction material consisting of repulped paper fiber, Portland cement or clay, and soil. Unlike concrete or adobe, papercrete blocks are lightweight, less than a third of the weight of a normal brick, which can easily be carried and assembled by Habitat’s unskilled volunteer labor.

COOL BLOW MASTER PLAN C HARLESTON , S OUTH C AROLINA Cool Blow is a lower-income African American neighborhood in East Central Charleston. Due to its location at the crossroads of I-26 and route 17 and its proximity to downtown, the neighborhood is poised to see increased development in the near future. Such patterns can already be seen in the recent completion of 1 Cool Blow, a new mixed-use development geared toward young professionals, a new Innovation Center, and numerous other planned projects, including a black box theater, farmers depot, and additional mixed-use developments. This plan aims to re-enlivening a depressed neighborhood, while its existing residents remain an integral part of the transformation. RETURN TO THE CITY URBAN HOUSING FOR SUBURBAN TRANSPLANTS S AVANNAH , G EORGIA The seemingly perfect nuclear family situated in the suburban landscape is now a physical expression of the past stressed beyond its capacity. Families have grown more diverse and complex, while the suburban form is becoming less accessible and caters to a smaller range of people. The need for change is here. Families are seeking solutions to their unique identities and demand a new public face to their private lives. West Boundary Row is a contemporary housing solution comprised of 21 housing units and a mixed-use building with retail, office, and institutional space, designed to give suburban transplants a true sense of community within a revitalized urban landscape.

COMPARTMENTALIZED SHELF & TABLE Inspired by the Arts & Crafts Movement of the 1930’s, this table and shelving object are made from poplar wood with accents of red mackory. The top of the table cantilevers out from the legs and appears to float above its base. The compartmentalized shelf is intended to hold everyday items such as mail, keys, magazines, fresh cut flowers, etc. The corners of the backboard are finger jointed and provide a place to hang coats or bags behind it.
