Serving the Purpose of Education: “The Method”
What is “The Method”? The method is noticing patterns and using a little of move three the “So What” step to process the method move. The method helps us as readers notice the patterns in what we’re reading, what goes with what, what opposes to what and anomalies; what doesn’t fit. Throughout this story by, Kisautaq Leona Okakok she repeats the education principles, the importance of education, different views and different cultures with educations, and what they had to do to obtain an education. My favorite line in this story was “education as a lifelong process and schooling as our specific responsibility.” So what? She mentions this because education is something we keep obtaining every day, we learn something every day or as we get older. The path of education never really stops, just because you don’t attend school. Now the “schooling” being their responsibility is that they give us information to expand what we already know or what we don’t. What repeats? Throughout this passage, are the ways of obtaining an education and learning a language. She mentions how teachers instructed the parents to speak only English at
home. Students were disciplined if caught speaking their native tongue. This shows how important education was to them and how in order to be successful you have to speak English. Education was portrayed as systems you don’t play with you have to take it serious. What goes with what? The will to learn a new language and obtain an education ties with the teachers demanding the parents to change their ways at home. Disciplining the children if caught speaking anything but English. They understood that children came from all over and was taught differently, such as where the sun raises and sets. Their so focused on giving the child good education, they decided to change their ways of teaching. This story is all about bettering the education and the kids at obtaining education, as they said their responsibility is to “school” the children. What is opposed to what? Okakok compares and contrast the cultures between Inupiat society, the Western society, Latin and the American society through the Webster’s dictionary, which their education system and definition of education. In Latin it say that education means “to assist at the birth of a child,” which is similar to Inupiat meaning which is “to cause to become a person.” In the Webster dictionary it means “to provide with training or knowledge” and the Western society believes that educating children is about “formal school with required attendance until a certain age.” So what? I feel like this was put in the=is piece to show that, yes, people may have different views of education but the main point is that to educate is to help. What doesn’t fit? I felt that the mentioning of the importance of privacy to the Western society strayed from the importance of educating the children and their language. So what? I honestly feel like this story would have been better without the mentioning of the privacy policy I see no reason to this paragraph of information.
The repeating of education throughout this story shows us what readers what it met to Okakok. As performing move four I answered the main questions we readers should focus on while performing the method. What repeats; the importance of education. What goes with what; the strategies they tried to arrange to improve the process of obtaining an education. What opposed to what; the comparison and contrast of education with different cultures. Finally what doesn’t fit? The random passage about the importance of privacy to the Western society, did not fit in this short story.
