Part 1

The Main Character - Kairos

It was in the past; a long time ago, in a place far away on the face of the Earth

called the Land of the Deep, lived a poor elderly couple, and in their old age, was blessed with the birth of a male child named Kairos. Kairos grew up to be an obedient, caring, kind and cheerful boy, loved by the villagers, young or old, rich or poor. They lived at the fridge of a village surrounded by deep Forest. Both Kairos’ parents were friends of the Forest, and were familiar with the names and natures of every trees and plants, and every rivers and streams, hills and caves in the Forest, and so was Kairos, though he was just 11 years old, was gifted with good memory and intelligence. Everyday Kairos’ parents would bring Kairos into the Forest to play with Nature and taught him to pick up the best firewood and harvest old roots of, Curcuma longa to make

into powder to be sold in the market square. Curcuma longa powder had medicinal value and was effective to curer skin diseases. Every household in this village would keep a bottle of the Curcuma longa powder, in the event of a mysterious kind of skin disease should happen again as it had happened 50 years ago. It was Kairos’ grandfather who stumbled upon this root of Curcuma longa that helped to alleviate this dreadful skin disease which nearly wiped off almost the entire village. Kairos had two twin cousins named Fidem and Amare, who are 7 years older than him. Growing up together had nurtured a sense of deep bonding and strong friendship among them. Fidem was an archerer and Amare was an expert in making fire.

Part 2 Task To Be Accomplished – Overcoming the Monster

It was a bright sunny morning as in any ordinary day, Kairos went into the Forest with Fidem and Amare. While Fidem was practicing his archery, and Amare was mastering the skill of making fire, Kairos went round to collect firewood as well Curcuma longa roots as his parents needed them to make Curcuma longa powder at home. As he walked deeper into the wood, he discovered the vegetation along the path seemed to be trampled upon by a pair of heavy gigantic feet that leave behind deep footprint on the ground. Trees were pulled down and roots of Curcuma longa were crushed and smashed into crumps and pieces. Kairos followed the trail of footprints that disappeared in front of a dark cave, called the Cave of Hades. Kairos recalled that his father had told him the story of the Giant Monster when he was six years old. “Could this giant creature hide in the Cave?’ Kairos trembled with fear, and ran back to the village as quickly as he could to tell his parents what he had discovered. 5

Upon return to the village, he saw many villagers in the market square screaming in pain while scratching their skin covered with sunburn-like rashes and sores, yellow bumps and red dry scaly patches as well as blood oozing out from these sores. Overwhelming by a sense of panic, danger and fear at the horrible sight of the suffering of his villagers, Kairos wondered what could have happened to his parents. He was relieved that his parents were safe and had not contracted the skin disease, which according to his father it could be the same disease happened 50 years ago that killed many villagers.

Kairos also told his father the gigantic footprints and the destruction of the

vegetation and Curcuma longa plants in the Forest. His father said this was exactly the same story Kairos’ grandfather had told him before when he was a boy, and that the skin diseases started to spread with the appearance of the gigantic footprints. By the time grandfather found the medicine to cure the skin disease, it was a bit late for many lives were taken away. Though the Monster had disappeared and life returned to normal, it was never the same anymore. Kairos could hardly have any proper sleep that night. The moment he closed his eyes, he dreamed of being chased after by a huge deep shadow and he ran for his life. The dark shadow almost overpowered him when suddenly a white bearded old man appeared and Kairos hid himself under his long and thick white beard and found safety within. When Kairos woke up from his nightmare, he felt there was a divine message for him. He heard a voice from the deep recesses of his heart that the old white bearded man had summoned him for a mission: to overcome this gigantic Monster and to cure those inflicted with skin diseases with a more potent Curcuma longa powder. He shared this dream and calling with his parents. His parents listened quietly and pondered it in their heart.

One night, Kairos’ mother had a dream that only her beloved son, Kairos, born at her old age, could save the village from destruction by the Monster. In the same dream, it was also revealed to her that this Monster came out of the Cave of Hades to shed its minute fine hair when night falls. The hairs were carried by wind and when landed on human skin, produced poison that caused skin diseases and ultimately death. Being God fearing devotees, Kairos’ parents prayed to the Goddess of Sophia for guidance and protection, while looking for signs to confirm this was indeed a divine calling for Kairos.

Though villagers started to apply Curcuma longa powder on their infected skin, it seemed only a temporary relief and the symptoms returned within a day or two; and many villagers succumbed to the disease. Kairos was very confused and disturbed with his dream. He was aware that he was just a little boy with a small stature. He had never used a knife to kill any animal before, now he was worried how he could overcome this Giant Monster hiding in the Cave of Hades- a deep dark eerie cave that nobody dared to enter for there was no guarantee to come out alive. How could he lure the Monster out of the Cave and destroy it? What could be the bait? What kind of a more potent Curcuma longa powder was able to cure this skin disease? It seemed to be an impossible task for him. Kairos felt very lonely and helpless.

9

Part 4 Helpful Factors – Fidem and Amare

Time was running short. With affirmation from his parents and blessing from the goddess of Sophia, Kairos accepted his calling with courage, faith, hope and love and began to plan for his mission. A sense of peace and strength soon filled his restless heart. He decided to meet his two twin cousins, Fidem and Amare and asked them for help. Kairos spent days and nights with his parents to prepare for a more potent medicine from a combination of Curcuma longa, Nizoral and Neem leaves, and it seemed to be more effective to cure the skin disease. At the meantime, Fidem sharpened his arrows and practiced his archery skillfully while Amare mastered his art of making fire with his ‘magical stick’ rubbing on rock surfaces. Kairos’ father had also inherited a secret recipe for making poisonous darts from their ancestors, which he had never tried out before. It could be used to blind the eyes of the Monster.

Part 5 The Climax of the Story : Monster Injured Its Eyes

It was the festival of Light. In the morning, the villagers worked together and laid stones near the entrance of the Cave of Hades. Fidem and Amare met up with Kairos in the Forest to bathe in the stream and listen to the sound of nature refreshing them and infused into them the energy of the Cosmic as they breathed deeply and warmed up their bodies. Evening came and night descended on Earth. Since it was the festival of Light, every family lighted up oil lamps in front of their house. The Monster hated the fire. Kairos, Filem and Amare positioned themselves at suitable location while discerning the movement of the Monster. They also rubbed their skin with new found mixture of Curcuma longa, Neem and Nizoral powder. Kairos stood calmly at the entrance of the Cave, calling the name of the Monster to agitate it. Amare started to rub his magical stick on the stones to create fire while Fidem got

ready his arrow and bow to shoot the poisonous darts into the eyes of the Monster should it come out of the Cave. There was total silence in the darkness of the night. There was no sign of any movement of the Monster. Kairos and his twin cousins were disappointed and began to lose hope, for it seemed their effort was in vain. Suddenly a loud scream pierced through the sky echoing from the Cave. A giant dark figure dashed out of the Cave and fell on Kairos, ready to press him down on the ground with its weight. Kairos could hardly breathe. Fidem quickly fired his arrow with poisonous darts with great precision and power, and blinded the eyes of the Monster. The Monster was in pain and tried to escape, but losing its direction due to its injured eyes, it threw itself into the bushes of fire near the Cave. The Monster shrunk smaller and smaller as its hairs were burnt away. Kairos and his twin cousins stood still and watched in awe as the Monster vanished from their sight.

Part 6: The Aftermath: Cleansing Ritual and Thanksgiving

Dawn appeared on the horizon, the night was over. Light penetrated into the Cave of Hades, dispelled darkness and illumined the Cave with hope of everlasting life. Kairos, Fidem and Amare went to dip themselves into the River of Shalom in the Forest, followed by the villagers. They came out of the water with healthy skin complexion radiating warmth and beauty. Kairos’ parents together with the villagers greeted him and his twin cousins with tears of joy and shouts of elation. A Celebration of Thanksgiving took place in the village for seven days and nights with singing and dancing, drinking fine wine and eating delicious food. The demon was subdued and they had crossed over this difficult time courageously. They had carved these words into their mind and heart to remember their story of perseverance in the face of any crisis moment: This too shall come to pass, and all will be well, all manner of things shall be well.

14

The Moral of the Story In moment of crisis or facing difficult time, we are called to remain patient and hopeful, for this time will soon fade away; and all will be well if we stay positive and focus on the things that are within our control. THE END
