Bringing the Beauty of Travel Home

WRITTEN BY Signe Adams | PHOTOS BY Nick Adams

Inspired by her travels, Beverly Knox and her husband Alan chose to incorporate her love for France into the design and construction of their Southern Utah home. The European-style ‘chateau’ was built over a three-year period in the quaint city of Santa Clara. Constructed with stone facing and covered with ivy, the house looked as though it was 200 years old the day it was finished – exactly as Beverly had hoped. The enduring beauty of the Knox’ home, as with any masterpiece, is in the details. Through careful research, utilizing her own travel photographs, and with the help of her favorite French antique importer, Beverly hand-selected key pieces of authentic architectural salvage from France to incorporate into the home. These salvaged items are physical reflection of the style Beverly became enamored during her first visit to Europe.

Knox family home was created from an original design by Jack Arnold.

The Knox front door, an architectural salvage piece originally from France, is at least 200 years old.

The story of the macaron starts with Pierre Desfontaines of Parisian pastry shop and café Ladurée, who at the beginning of the 20th century first thought of taking two macaroon shells and joining them with a delicious ganache filling. The macaron is a versatilely flavored treat with a thin, light crust briefly giving way to a layer of moist almond meringue following by a center of silky smooth filling. Palmier, also called palm leaves, are small French cookies made from sugar-encrusted puff pastry. They are served with tea or coffee or as an accompaniment to ice cream and other desserts. Beverly was a high school student when she landed in France for the first time and immediately fell in love with the culture and artistry. The textures, style, quality, patina, and functional beauty of even the most utilitarian objects spoke a visual language that her heart naturally understood. For Beverly, it was a feast for the senses. The sights, sounds, tastes, and smells were what drew her back to France again and again. She loved spending her days exploring a French city or petite town and discovering it’s beautiful details. Although breathtaking, the Knox home was not created to be a monument; nor was the interior of the house (which is as impeccably designed as the exterior) intended to be just for show. The house is home to Beverly and Alan’s four children and beloved pet beagle. It is a place where their real family lives, grows, works, plays, cries, and laughs. The home’s beautifully crafted details are an everyday reminder of Beverly’s passion for France. And as time travels, her family is forging their own history there.
